In a significant development, the Lok Sabha has passed the bill granting legal status to Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. The amendment to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014 was approved through a voice vote after nearly two hours of discussion, bringing an end to years of uncertainty surrounding the capital issue.
Union Minister Nityanand Rai introduced the bill, which ensures that the new provisions come into effect from June 2, 2024. The legislation is being seen as a decisive step toward administrative clarity and long term stability for the state.
In a notable move, the Congress party extended its support to the bill. MP Manickam Tagore stated that Amaravati deserves to be developed as a strong capital city on par with major urban centres. He also stressed the need to ensure balanced development across regions such as Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, and Kurnool. At the same time, he urged the Centre to fulfil earlier commitments made during state bifurcation.
Support for Amaravati was strongly voiced by several leaders. Jana Sena MP Vallabhaneni Balashowry said the capital was formed under unavoidable circumstances and reflects the will of the people. BJP leader D. Purandeswari highlighted that any capital decision must align with parliamentary approval. MP CM Ramesh described the bill as historic and said it would permanently end the debate over multiple capitals.
Opposition members opposed the bill and staged a walkout. They raised concerns about financial implications and pending assurances to farmers.
Despite the resistance, the bill sailed through without hurdles. It will now move to the Rajya Sabha for approval before becoming law, bringing Amaravati closer to full legal recognition as the capital.
