Imran Khan Jail Time in Toshakhana Case: Background and Consequences

0

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taken into custody in Lahore following a three-year prison sentence issued by a trial court in the Toshakhana case. Details of this case and the implications of this political development are as follows.

What is Toshakhana case?

Toshakhana, managed by the Cabinet Division, was established in 1974 during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s leadership to collect and store gifts given to prominent figures like parliament members, ministers, the President, and the Prime Minister. The Toshakhana case revolves around the allegation that details of these gifts were not disclosed in annual reports submitted by Imran Khan and his party to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

This issue was raised by members of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (a rival political party of Imran’s party) in 2022. They complained that Imran Khan illegally sold state gifts worth more than 14 crore Pakistani rupees during his tenure from 2018 to 2022. These gifts include the gifts he received from foreign dignitaries and royal families. The gifts included expensive watches and other costly articles. As per the complaint, these gifts were sold by Imran’s aides in Dubai.

Election Commission verdict in 2022:

The Election Commission investigated the matter and delivered its verdict in October 2022. As per this verdict, Imran Khan is found guilty by Pakistan Election Commission and so he is barred from holding public office for five years. This verdict is considered a landmark verdict in Pakistan. Election Commission also sent the references to the trial court requesting it to begin criminal proceedings.

Today’s verdict by sessions court.

Today Islamabad district and sessions court, which is handling criminal proceedings of the case, found Imran Khan guilty and given three years of prison sentence. Court also imposed 1 lakh rupees fine. Following the verdict, Imran Khan was taken into custody from his Lahore residence by the police. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has filed an appeal with Pakistan’s Supreme Court regarding the district court’s decision. Khan, however, insists on his innocence and claims that the charges against him are politically motivated.

Political consequences of this verdict:

The former cricket legend’s future political career is now uncertain due to this verdict. He is 70 years old now. Legal experts speculate that this conviction could potentially affect his eligibility to participate in the upcoming national elections scheduled for early November. The situation has garnered significant attention due to its potential implications for Khan’s political journey. His party’s decision to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court introduces further complexity to this legal dispute, which holds the potential to shape Pakistan’s political landscape.

Indian govt’s ‘fascist tactics’ in Kashmir will fail: Imran

0

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that the Indian government’s “fascist tactics” in Kashmir will “fail miserably” to smother the Kashmiri freedom struggle.

The cricketer-turned-politician, in a series of tweets, warned the Indian government that “no force can stop” a nation from achieving its goals when unity is achieved in a freedom struggle and death is not feared.

Tensions have escalated between the two neighbours following India’s decision to revoke Article 370 of its Constitution which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

“The fascist, Hindu supremacist (Narendra) Modi government should know that while armies, militants and terrorists can be defeated by superior forces; history tells us that when a nation unites in a freedom struggle and does not fear death, no force can stop it from achieving its goal.

“That is why the Hindutva exclusivist creed of the Modi-led government with its fascist tactics in Indian-occupied Kashmir will fail miserably in its attempt to smother the Kashmiri liberation struggle,” he added.

On Wednesday, Khan celebrated Pakistan’s Independence Day in “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” (AJK) to express “solidarity with the Kashmiris”, while India’s Independence Day on Thursday was observed as “Black Day” in Pakistan.

Addressing a special session of the AJK Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad, Khan had said the Pakistan Army “is battle-hardened and it is fully ready to respond to any violation by India”.

Imran: India’s Kashmir move strategic blunder, to cost it heavily

0

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday termed India’s move to revoke special status to Jammu and Kashmir a “strategic blunder” and said that the move will cost New Delhi “heavily”.

Khan made the comments while addressing a special session of the “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad as Pakistan marked its Independence Day “in solidarity with Kashmiris”.

“I believe it is a (huge) strategic blunder by Modi. It will cost Modi and his BJP government heavily. I consider it a big miscalculation by Modi. He has played his final card,” the Khan said.

Vowing to take the Kashmir cause forward, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief said: “I’ll become the voice for Kashmir. I will be Kashmir’s ambassador.”

He said it was a challenging task to draw attention of world leaders to the “human rights violations in occupied Kashmir”, Geo News reported.

“But now, the Kashmir issue is under the spotlight of (world media). By (clamping down further) on occupied Kashmir, Modi has in fact helped to internationalize the dispute,” said the cricketer-turned-politician.

The Pakistan government earlier decided to observe their Independence Day in solidarity with “the brave Kashmiris and their just struggle for their right of self-determination”.

India’s Independence Day on Thursday will be observed as “Black Day” across Pakistan.

Indian pilot to be freed Friday as ‘peace gesture’, says Imran

The captured Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot will be freed on Friday “as a peace gesture”, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Thursday.

Addressing a joint session of the National Assembly, Khan said the India-Pakistan situation should not “get out of hand” otherwise “Pakistan will have to retaliate”, the Dawn reported.

“Countries are ruined because of miscalculation,” said Khan. Alleging “war hysteria” in India, he said: “I’m afraid there might be a miscalculation.

“War is not a solution. If India takes any action, we will have to retaliate.”

The joint session of Parliament was called to discuss the rising tensions with India.

“The only purpose of our strike (on India on Wednesday) was to demonstrate our capability and will,” said the Prime Minister. “We did not want to inflict any casualty on India as we wanted to act in a responsible manner.”

He said he tried to call Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the telephone on Wednesday because “escalation is not in our interests nor in India’s”.

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman of the IAF was captured by Pakistanis on Wednesday after his MiG was shot down and fell in Pakistani territory during a dogfight.
