Vijay Deverakonda rose to fame with Tharun Bhascker directed ‘Pelli Choopulu’. Having established himself as a big star, Vijay Deverakonda is introducing Tharun as a hero in this week’s release ‘Meeku Maathrame Cheptha’. The film’s funny trailer has generated a lot of interest.

Story :

Rakesh (Tharun Bhascker) and Kamesh (Abhinav) work in a TV channel. Rakesh gets attracted to a doctor Steffi (Vani Bhojan) and quickly their wedding is fixed. Days before his wedding, Rakesh’s old video surfaces online and it goes viral. The video is a clip of a first-night scene form an unfinished film that he had acted in as a hero. Fearing that Steffi might take this in a wrong way if she gets to watch, Rakesh takes the help of his hacker friend to delete it from online. This leads to many complications.

Analysis :

“Meeku Mathrame Cheptha” begins like a Guy Ritchie movie but it is not about the crime. The basic plot is about a guy trying to save himself from a bad situation that arose due to a viral video. It begins like a buddy comedy with Tharun Bhascker and Abhinav Gomatam occupying the central roles. Their banter and the comedy scenes involving this ‘first-night’ tape are hilarious. The first hour provides the best time-pass moments. Not a dull moment is there. Simple comedy scenes and natural dialogues make the movie an engaging watch all the while providing some hearty laughs.

Like in all ‘concept’ based movies, the second hour suffers from scenes doing rounds at the same place. In this case, the post-interval scenes are boring. Especially the wedding scene is stretched beyond a point and it is also not believable. Thankfully, the climax twist has saved the movie.

The film’s strength lies in comedy situations and fun dialogues and also the performances of Tharun Bhascker and Abhinav. Writer and director Shammer Sultan has written an interesting screenplay but he has not enough material in the second hour to engage us. He should have trimmed some portions.

Among the cast, Vani Bhojan as Tharun’s girlfriend and Pavani as Abhinav’s girlfriend get limited appearance but they are good. Anasuya’s role is like an extended cameo.

The film doesn’t have flashy production design but the technical department has done the required job neatly.

Positives:

• Second half
• Repetitive
• Unconvincing Anasuya’s angle

Verdict:

The two lead characters in ‘Meeku Maathrame Cheptha’ are superb with some original funny lines. Abhinav and Tharun are natural and the movie has a very thin but interesting storyline, but it goes downhill after the interval. It works in parts but not entirely.
