Sindhu becomes first Indian to win World Championships

1

Ace shuttler P.V. Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships, crushing Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in just 36 minutes in a one-sided final.

Sindhu’s gold is the second medal that India won at the Worlds this year with Sai Praneeth winning a bronze in men’s singles category.

The last time Sindhu and Okuhara met in a World Championships final was in 2017. In a pulsating encounter that lasted nearly two hours and involved a 73-shot rally, Okuhara emerged victorious in the end. Sindhu again reached the final in 2018, only to go down to Carolina Marín of Spain. However, she finally broke the jinx this time, brushing aside her opponent with a dominant show from start to finish.

In stark contrast to world No. Sindhu, the Japanese world No. 4 on Sunday looked completely at sea against the Indian star’s relentless attacks.

Although Okuhara won the first point of the first game, Sindhu won eight straight points after that to race to a 8-1 lead. Okuhara managed just one more point before the interval with Sindhu leading 11-2.

The mauling continued for much of the second period of the opener, which ended in just 16 minutes. Okuhara got a few consecutive points towards the end to extend her score to 7 but Sindhu sealed the issue on her first game point.

In the second game, Okuhara briefly kept pace until the score was 3-2 in Sindhu’s favour after which the Indian took six consecutive points to race to a 9-2 lead.

Okuhara won two more points but Sindhu kept her foot on the pedal and went into the interval with a 11-4 lead.

Okuhara went on to take just three more points in the second period as Sindhu continued to storm her way to the title. Once again, she managed to get over the line on her first match point.

This was the 16th match between Sindhu and Okuhara. Sindhu now leads 9-7 head-to-head, including three victories in the last five meetings before Sunday’s clash.

Both players had not won a title this year. While Okuhara reached the final after a hard fought 17-21, 21-18, 21-15 win against Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, Sindhu swatted aside China’s Chen Yu Fei 21-7, 21-14 in her semifinal clash.

This is Sindhu’s fifth medal at the World Championships, which is the joint highest in women’s singles in the history of the tournament along with Xhang Ning of China, a two-time Olympic gold medallist. Apart from the two silvers Sindhu won in the last two editions, she had also won the bronze in 2013 and 2014.

She Is Only Choice To Play PV Sindhu?

0

From the time biopic on Pullela Gopichand is been announced there is a big discussion about who will be playing PV Sindhu role in the film? Makers of the Gopichand biopic has announced that it be a multilingual movie in Telugu, Hindi, English and will be dubbed in Tamil for the movie buffs to know the untold story of the badminton player.

This has made the situation more tough for the makers to bring a known face in south, northern regions cinema viewers and she should also possess star tag too. In the current generation of young heroines, only Rakul Preet Singh is well known in Bollywood as well as in Tollywood, Kollywood and on top of it other star heroines have passed the age to play young Sindhu in the silver screen. Even the role of PV Sindhu is more of a guest role in the biopic with less runtime and this is making most of the heroines to stay a bit away from the movie. Let’s wait and watch if Rakul gets the chance to fill the shoes of PV Sindhu or not?

Shuttler P.V. Sindhu says mistreated by IndiGo staff

Rio Olympics silver medallist shuttler P.V. Sindhu on Saturday slammed private carrier IndiGo, saying a staffer “behaved very badly and rudely” with her when she boarded a Hyderabad-Mumbai flight.

Sindhu took to Twitter, describing the incident as “a very bad experience” after a staffer named Ajeetesh objected to her carrying her kit-bag which had her racquets inside it.

The airline said the baggage issue was eventually resolved.

“We hope that Ms Sindhu will appreciate that our colleague was only carrying out his duty in the best interest of a safe and reliable operation,” Ajay Jasra, IndiGo’s Director of Corporate Communications, said in a statement.

On her part, Sindhu posted in a series of tweets: “Sorry to say ..I had a very bad experience when i was flying by 6E 608 flight to bombay (sic) on November 4 the ground staff by name Ajeetesh.”

“Ground staff (skipper) Ajeetesh behaved very badly and rudely with me. When the air hostess Ashima tried to advise him to behave properly with the passenger (Me) but to my surprise he behaved very rudely with her. If this type of people work for a reputed airline like Indigo they will spoil their reputation.”

While Sindhu was not reachable, IANS contacted her mother who played down the incident, saying: “Lets not make it a very serious issue, such things take place sometimes.”

The IndiGo statement said: “Ms P.V. Sindhu boarded flight 6E608 Hyderabad-Mumbai carrying oversized baggage which was not fitting into the overhead bin. Ms Sindhu was informed that it will be moved to cargo hold of the aircraft. This is the same policy we follow for all customers. Oversized baggage inside the cabin inconveniences other customers and can also be a safety hazard if it cannot be secured properly in the cabin.”

“During the entire conversation, the member of the IndiGo ground operations remained calm. After several requests to her manager, they finally consented to the removal of the bag from the cabin. We then placed the over-sized baggage in the cargo hold and was handed over to Ms Sindhu on arrival. We are extremely proud of Ms Sindhu’s sporting achievements and are grateful for the laurels she has won for our country. However, safety of our operations is paramount to IndiGo,” the statement added.

PV Sindhu turns producer for a digital film

0

Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu has turned producer for a digital film paying ode to her coach Pullela Gopichand for his relentless pursuit of excellence.

Celebrating ‘Teacher’s Day’ that falls on September 5, Sindhu has co-produced the film with sports drink brand Gatorade to celebrate those who keep pushing you, through the digital film titled #IHATEMYTEACHER’

The story is that of Sindhu’s journey and her equation with Gopichand.

“Coach has worked relentlessly and has had big dreams for me. He is my faith replenisher. Working with Gatorade on this film has hit close to home, and I can’t help but feel indebted to coach for his relentless pursuit of excellence,” Sindhu, ambassador of the drink brand, said in a statement.

“This Teacher’s Day, I dedicate all my success to him and urge everyone else to also honour the driving force in their lives. Let’s hate our teachers for pushing us further and believing in us more than we believe in ourselves,” added Sindhu, who finished second at the World Badminton Championships in Glasgow last month.

The idea behind the film was to bring alive the crucial love-hate relationship with the mentors, guides, trainers and teachers who have pushed us to succeed, said Vipul Prakash, Senior Vice President – Beverage Category, PepsiCo India.

“Authenticity has become the bedrock of consumer sentiment and as an ode to teachers, we couldn’t have found a better story to tell than that of our brand ambassador P.V Sindhu,” he said.

Expressing his point of view on the conceptualisation of the creative thought behind this film, Senthil Kumar, Chief Creative Officer of the creative agency JWT India, says the film is an ode to Gopi from Sindhu in its “purest” form.

India has immense talent, a second Sindhu possible: P.V. Sindhu

Impressed by Badminton Association of India (BAI) President Himanta Biswa Sarma’s initiative to create a pool of players for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, star shuttler Pusarla Venkata Sindhu said the country has immense talent and the day is not far when another Sindhu or Saina Nehwal will emerge.

Sindhu, who recently bettered her bronze medal performances at the 2013 and 2014 World Championships to clinch the silver at the 2017 edition in Glasgow, went down to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a nerve-wrecking one hour 50 minute final at the Emirates Arena on Sunday.

This was India’s best show in a World Badminton Championship with the country bagging two medals for the first time. Sindhu’s city mate Saina had settled for the bronze on Saturday after losing her semi-final to Okuhara.

But women’s singles in India suffers from a lack of depth as, apart from the Hyderabadi duo, there is absolutely no other big name in the national circuit. But Sindhu is hopeful of seeing emerging shuttlers making it big on the international stage.

“I wish the very best to the BAI. I would like to see a second Sindhu coming up and that is very much possible. India has immense talent,” Sindhu told IANS in a telephonic interview.

At 22, Sindhu has four medals from global tournaments, including a silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, besides the various Superseries and Grand Prix titles, but the hunger is still on.

“It really feels amazing!! However, this is just the beginning and I have a long way to go and many more laurels to bring for India,” she said.

Asked about the deciding game of the World Championship final, when both Sindhu and Okuhara were locked at 20-20, the Hyderabadi said: “All I was thinking was to play one point at a time and move ahead. I wanted to stay away from the pressure and focus on my game.”

Prior to their World Championship final, Sindhu and Okuhara enjoyed a 3-3 head-to-head record and the tie could have headed either way on Sunday.

Commenting on her opponent, Sindhu said: “Okuhara was never easy… It was the final and obviously was going to be a tough one with tough rallies going on.”

“I never took her easy. I was prepared for the match to be really long, but unfortunately it wasn’t my day,” she added.

Sindhu finished her semi-final at around 2:30 am on Sunday morning and she was again back on the court after 17 hours for the final, which went on for 110 minutes to become the second-longest women’s singles final in history.

When probed about her preparations for the summit clash, Sindhu stressed on the importance of sound sleep and good food.

“Well, I didn’t have too much time between my final and semi-final. Hence I focused on resting well to be ready for the finals. There was nothing much we could do with the scheduling of the tournament; so I rested well,” she said.

Besides national coach Pullela Gopichand, Sindhu credited her Indonesian coach Mulyo Handoyo for helping improve her fitness level, which was evident from the 73-shot rally in the second game.

“Along with Gopichand, I have been training under an Indonesian coach who has helped immensely in training for the games as well as for fitness.

“Everyone is asking about that particular rally, but every rally was equally long and there were too many shots from both sides. We both were really tired but it turned out to be one exciting contest,” she said.

Sindhu, who was made Bridgestone India’s brand ambassador for three years on Wednesday, is now aiming to continue her winning momentum at the Korea and Japan super series, in September.

On a lighter note, the shuttler revealed that she had to sacrifice her favourite ice creams and biryani for the World Championship silver.

Would love to see Deepika as P.V. Sindhu in my film: Sonu Sood

After producing “Tutak Tutak Tutiya”, Sonu Sood is busy working on his next production — a biopic on badminton player P.V. Sindhu and says he would love to see Deepika Padukone portraying the character.

Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal in 2016.

“I would love to see Deepika playing character of Sindhu in my film. She is a fine actress. We are still in scripting stage. If the part is offered to her and she likes the script and director, and has the time for it, she will surely give her nod.

“After the completion of the script, I would like to approach her for this role because when you become producer, it becomes a huge responsibility to present a strong script in front of actors,” Sonu said here on the sidelines of the 20-year celebration of the movie “Border”.

Deepika is the daughter of ace badminton player Prakash Padukone and she herself has been a badminton player at the national level in her school days. But Deepika is fully invested in “Padmavati” as of now.

Sonu and Deepika have earlier worked together in “Happy New Year”.

Commenting on the progress of the Sindhu biopic, Sonu said: “We are in continuous touch with P.V. Sindhu and her family members. The first draft of the story has been completed and in the coming one or two months, we will be able to lock the script. We are in talks with other actresses as well, but till the time the script is not completed actors also doesn’t get excited for the film.”

Another film on badminton player Saina Nehwal is in the works with actress Shraddha Kapoor playing the title role.

Asked about the similarities between the two films, Sonu said: “Shraddha is a great actress and I know she will do a great job with it. The only common aspect in both the films is badminton but their life and journey towards glory is completely different. I feel these stories will inspire people who live in villages or small cities to become better sportspersons.”

PV Sindhu in China Open finals

PV Sindhu in China Open Finals

(S.Ravi Seshu)

Continuing India’s rich tradition of dominating Chinese players in their own land, PV Sindhu stormed into finals of this year’s edition by defeating a better ranked player in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The seventh seed Sindhu came from behind to oust the sixth seed Ji Hyun of Korea 11-21, 23-21, 21-19 to be a step away from clinching her maiden Super Series Premier at the USD 7,00,000 tournament. The gritty Hyderabadi saved three match points in the second game.

The two-time bronze medallist in World Championships and silver medal winner in Rio Olympics, Sindhu is all set to lock horns with Sun Yu (seed-8), local favourite, in the title clash.

This is the third year in a row that an Indian woman will be in the final in China, the land of shuttle champions. Saina Nehwal had won the tournament in 2014 but remained runner up the next year. Though the injury-hit Saina lost in the first round this year, PV Sindhu is all set to compete against another Chinese for the honours.

Sindhu, who fumbled in the last tournaments after Olympics, was clueless in the opening game of the semi-finals as the Korean dominated in all departments. The neck-and-neck match saw Sindhu struggling very hard to match the offence of her opponent. Ji Hyun made it 20-17 almost sealing the Indian’s fate in the second game. Sindhu, at this crucial stage, came up with gritty strokes, including an angled drop shot before levelling the score. She roared back into the match with a powerful smash during a long rally and won it.

In the decider, Ji Hyun and Sindhu matched each other in rallies and smashes. Ji Hyun moved to a 12-10 lead but Sindhu made it 20-18. Eventually, the Indian scored a memorable win with a superb cross court smash.

Sindhu had reached maiden Super Series final at the Denmark Open last year but lost to the 2012 Olympic champion China’s Li Xuerui in straight games.
