24 UK returnees to two Telugu states test corona positive

Six returnees from the United Kingdom to Andhra Pradesh have tested coronavirus positive so far while such flyers in neighbouring Telangana number 18, health officials said on Saturday.

Authorities in Andhra Pradesh have identified 1,214 people who returned to the state from the UK so far. The Health Department has traced 1,158 while efforts are on to trace the remaining 56.

In all, 1,101 UK returnees were shifted to quarantine centres, of which six tested positive.

The samples of positive cases have now been sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) for genome sequencing to find out if hey are infected by the new strain of the virus found in the UK.

Of the positive cases, two are from Guntur district while one each was reported from East Godavari, Krishna, Anantapur, and Nellore districts.

Meanwhile, in Telangana, two more UK returnees tested positive, taking the total such cases to 18. Samples of the infected persons have been sent to CCMB for genome sequencing.

Out of 18 positive patients, four are from Hyderabad, six from Medchal Malkajgiri district, two from Jagtial district and one each from Mancherial, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Siddipet, and Warangal Urban districts.

Public Health Department Director Dr G Srinivas Rao said that those found infected were kept in special wards in different hospitals.

According to officials, 1,200 persons have travelled to Telangana from the UK since December 9. Of them, 926 were identified and COVID tests conducted on them.

A total of 92 returnees were from other states. After landing in Hyderabad, they left for their respective states. The Health Department of Telangana informed the states concerned.

The health authorities also traced 76 contacts of those who tested positive. They have been quarantined and their health condition under close observation.

The Health Department is on high alert in the wake of new coronavirus strain in some countries. It is tracing, testing, and treatment method to prevent the spread of the virus.

The department has requested all those who have came directly to the state from the UK after December 9 or have travelled through the UK to provide details by calling on 040-24651119 or by texting on WhatsApp to 9154170960. Staff from Health Department will visit their homes for health check-ups.

Seven travellers from the United Kingdom to Telangana have tested positive for Covid-19, state health officials said on Thursday.

Their samples have been sent to the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) to find out if they had been infected with the new strain of coronavirus.

Officials told state Health Minister Eatala Rajender at a review meeting that those who tested positive are being monitored closely. The health department is also trying to trace those who came in contact with these seven persons.

The Health Minister reviewed the situation in the wake of the concern caused by a new strain of coronavirus found in the UK.

Officials said that 1,200 people reached Telangana either directly from the UK or travelled through the UK since December 9. The health department identified 846 people and conducted tests on them. Seven of them have tested positive. They said those who tested negative are also being monitored.

The Health Minister urged the people to be alert in view of the warning by health experts that the new strain of coronavirus can spread rapidly.

He appealed to the people to limit Christmas and New Year celebrations to their homes and take all precautions suggested by the government to check the spread of the virus. He urged people not to forget wearing masks, maintaining social distance and washing their hands frequently.

Rajender said that since vaccine is being seen as the only way to eliminate the fear of coronavirus, the government is making all arrangements to ensure administration of vaccine as and when it is available. He discussed with officials the arrangements for vaccine transportation, storage and distribution.

The minister said 10,000 health personnel are being trained to administer the vaccine. “If they can vaccinate 100 people each, we can administer the vaccine to 10 lakh people every day,” he said.

The government has prepared a plan to vaccinate 70 to 80 lakh people in the first phase. Health, police, municipal and fire personnel and aged people will be covered in the initial phase. The second dose has to be given 28 days after the first dose.

The minister said the required software for vaccine administration programme is ready as he directed the officials to ensure supply of drinking water, tents and chairs at the vaccine centres.

The minister also asked officials to make fool-proof arrangements for the required cold chain, supply of vaccine, training to the personnel and the facilities at the vaccine centres.

The meeting was also attended by health secretary S.A.M. Rizvi, family welfare commissioner Vakati Karuna, medical education director Ramesh Reddy, director of public health Srinivas Rao, Telangana State Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation MD Chandrasekhar Reddy, and member of expert committee on Covid-19, Gangadhar.

1,200 UK returnees to Telangana to undergo tests

Telangana medical and health department has decided to conduct medical tests on 1,200 passengers who travelled to the state directly from the United Kingdom after December 9.

Director of public health G. Srinivasa Rao said that the department is collecting the details to conduct tests on all of them. The officials are inquiring about their health condition.

The department has appealed to all those who came directly to the state from the UK after December 9 or had travelled through the UK to provide their details by calling on 040-24651119 or text on WhatsApp to 9154170960. The health department staff will visit their homes and conduct the test.

The health authorities said they are fully alert following the impact of a new strain of coronavirus in the UK and some other countries. A decision has been taken to employ tracing, testing and treatment method to prevent the spread of the virus.

“We are collecting details of the flyers who returned from the UK and examining their health condition. We have found that 1,200 passengers have returned to Telangana from the UK since December 9,” the director said.

The department also stated that none of the UK returnees have tested positive so far. With the government’s timely decisions and measures and with people’s cooperation, the state has been successful in controlling the spread of the virus and the number of deaths, he said.

“We urge people to cooperate in the same fashion in the future also. People need not worry or get panicked with the new virus strain but they should be vigilant. Using mask properly, following physical distancing and washing your hands regularly is important,” he added.
