The Railway Ministry has taken a significant administrative step by finalizing the operational launch of the new South Coast Railway Zone headquartered in Visakhapatnam. Operations are scheduled to begin on April 1, marking a major restructuring of railway administration in Andhra Pradesh.
With this reorganization, three divisions that were earlier under the South Central Railway will now come under the newly formed South Coast Railway Zone. Vijayawada, Guntur, and Guntakal divisions will be integrated into the Visakhapatnam based zone. At the same time, the South Central Railway will now be limited to Secunderabad, Hyderabad, and Nanded divisions.
The restructuring follows detailed technical evaluation and administrative planning. Railway authorities have already submitted a comprehensive project report to the Railway Board. The report covered divisional boundaries, financial allocation, revenue and expenditure assessment, operational management, and staff redistribution. After receiving formal approval from the central government, preparations have accelerated to ensure smooth commencement of operations from April 1.
Several route adjustments have also been finalized as part of the reorganization. The 108 kilometer Raichur to Wadi stretch, which was earlier under Guntakal division, will now come under Secunderabad division. The 142 kilometer stretch covering Vishnupuram to Pagidipalli and Vishnupuram to Janpahad will shift from Guntur division to Secunderabad division. In addition, the 46 kilometer Motumarru to Kondapalli route will move from Secunderabad to Vijayawada division.
Appointments of the General Manager and key departmental heads for the new zone are being completed in phases. Administrative control, staff allocation, and technical coordination are being streamlined to avoid operational disruptions.
The formation of the Visakhapatnam Railway Zone is expected to strengthen railway connectivity across coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. Improved rail access to major ports such as Visakhapatnam Port and Krishnapatnam Port is likely to enhance cargo movement and logistics efficiency. Officials indicate that the new zone could also pave the way for additional passenger train proposals in the future.
The reorganization is also expected to create employment opportunities, particularly for local youth in railway recruitment drives. With administrative focus shifting to Visakhapatnam, regional infrastructure planning may gain greater priority.
An official notification confirming all operational details is expected shortly. Once implemented, the new railway zone is set to reshape rail administration in the region and improve service delivery across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
