Amaravati public meeting at Velagapudi on Jan 25

The joint action committee leaders of Amaravati are planning to hold a public meeting at Velagapudi on January 25 marking the completion of 1500 days of their agitation. The farmers have been holding protests against three capitals proposed by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government for the past 1500 days.

The government had proposed three capitals for the state – Visakhapatnam as executive capital, Amaravati as legislative capital and Kurnool as judicial capital. The government had shifted several judicial departments and wings to Kurnool and planned to shift some departments to Visakhapatnam. However, shifting to Visakhapatnam was stalled by the high court for the time being.

As the Jagan Mohan Reddy government is committed to the three-capital proposal of January 2020, the farmers have been holding the protests. They want Amaravati to be the only capital of the state and not the three capitals as proposed by the government.

The farmers are now planning to hold innovative protests marking the completion of 1500 days by January 25. The joint action committee leaders are holding a meeting in Mandadam village today to finalise the agitational programme. They would be holding the agitation and finally the public meeting at Velagapudi.

The farmers want to invite the leaders of opposition parties for the public meeting, where they would emphasise on having one capital at Amaravati. They are also planning to involve voluntary organisations and different peoples’ movements at the public meeting.

The farmers plan to have series of protests till January 25 to high light Amaravati as the only capital of the state. However, it is not finalised yet whether to involve political parties in the protests or at the public meeting.

The farmers want to give final ultimatum to the state government on Amaravati as capital as the State is set to go for general election to the State Assembly in the next three months. The farmers have earlier held two meetings at Tirupati and Mandadam village in the past where they involved the leaders of various political parties. This would be the third meeting for them involving the leaders of various political parties.
