Comeback of Situational Comedy in Telugu Cinema

It is usually said that comedy is one of the toughest genres out of all the emotions in 24 crafts. The main reason for it is because comedy takes lot of wit and presence of mind to write a scene which evokes laughter. If it is overdone or underplayed, a comedy scene can become haywire. Telugu Cinema has been predominantly for comedy sequences right from black and white era when seasoned actors like Relangi, Ramana Reddy and Raja Babu evoking nonstop laughter with their obvious facial expressions and antics.

Telugu Cinema had the credit of comedy scenes which were like a parallel story apart from the main storyline. Then came the 80s era where directors like Jandhyala, Vamsi and Relangi Narasimha Rao focused on out and out comedy flicks by having heroes like Rajendra Prasad, Naresh and Chandra Mohan in lead roles who evoked laughter. The trend continued with E.V.V.Satyanarayana who made amazing comedy flicks right through the 90s decade. However, there were filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma who tickled the funny bone with situational comedy in films like Kshana Kshanam, Anaganaga Oka Roju and Money. These comedy sequences were part of the film’s main plot and were there in the film for a reason.

After a while with Brahmanandam, Kota Srinivasa Rao , M.S.Narayana and so on bringing out amazing laughter, the new-age filmmakers of the 2000s era namely Srinu Vaitla, Trivikram Srinivas brought out a new style of comedy. Their comedy depended on wit, fun and entertainment.

But this year has bloomed with great situational comedy flicks where laughter is no longer forced but with the lead actor’s genuine antics which are entertaining. Vijay Deverakonda’s Pelli Choopulu was one flick which brought back this trend. In the year 2019, films like Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya, Brochevarevarura and Oh Baby focused on situational comedy which is a strong indication that things are bright for situational comedy! The main storyline of the film is essentially focused on comedy with additional layers of fun, entertainment and tremendous wit.
