Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the number of total Assembly seats couldn’t be increased in Andhra Pradesh because of constitutional hurdles involved in the process.

He said that the hike in seats could be possible only through an amendment to the constitution. He recalled that there was a proposal for increasing seats from 175 to 225. Rajnath addressed the 28th meeting of the Southern States Development Council held in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Chief ministers from Karnataka and Pondicherry, AP finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and delegates from Kerala and Telangana took part. Rajnath also promised to bring into effect more efficient mechanism to support the Southern States in times of floods and natural calamities. He talked about preventing smuggling of red sander from Seshachalam forests and taking more water from the Krishna river to Chennai city.
