Chiranjeevi likely to be a BJP star

0

Tollywood Megastar and Rajya Sabha member Konidela Chiranjeevi may soon join Bhartiya Janata Party. A close confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ram Madhav has been allegedly in deliberations with the actor-cum-politician.

Days after Former Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu quit BJP after being picked for NDA Vice Presidential candidature, the saffron party affairs in Andhra Pradesh are being handled by its national general secretary Ram Madhav who hails from East Godavari.

AP BJP cadre is looking up to a leader who can become the face of the party and lead them. With Venkaiah taking step back and BJP giving indications that it doesn’t want to be TDP’s ally, Madhav allegedly has been trying to get the Megastar represent their party.

Rumours of Chiranjeevi joining surfaced several times in the past, but the actor rubbished the reports and said that he will remain with the grand old party. Due to the likes of Venkaiah the possibility of Chiranjeevi joining the Saffron Brigade were bleak at that time.

However, with the changing political scenario in AP, especially with the Kapus venting ire on TDP and Venkaiah moving out of active politics, BJP rooting for Megastar is a well-planned move.

Nitish Kumar returns as CM of Bihar with BJP

0

A night after accepting resignation of Nitesh Kumar, Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi administered oath to him again as the chief minister and Sushil Kumar Modi as the deputy chief minister of Bihar on Thursday.

Amidst the chants of “Nitish Kumar Zindabad” in Raj Bhavan, the JDU chief took oath as Chief Minister for the sixth time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on twitter said,

It may be noted that, on Wednesday evening the Nitesh tendered his resignation for the post and dissolved the Mahagathbandhan. Hours after the move, Nitish formally staked claim to form the government with the backing from the BJP. This officially marks his return to the NDA.

The JDU-BJP alliance together have 129 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. RJD has along with Congress and CPI-ML has only 110MLAs .

It may be recalled that, in 2013, Nitesh Broke alliance with the BJP when they projected that Narendra Modi as prime ministerial candidate . In 2015, JDU formed alliance with Lalu Prasad, later transforming into grand alliance with the Congress to fight the assembly elections. Finally JDU took a U-turn in 2017 and returned to its former ally BJP.

Congress questions Venkaiah Naidu about alleged irregularities

0

The Congress on Wednesday sought replies from NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate M. Venkaiah Naidu on the exemption given to his daughter’s NGO from paying various developmental charges amounting to Rs 2.46 crore to Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority.

Other questions pertain to the supply of vehicles by Harsha Toyota (owned by Naidu’s son Harshvardhan Naidu) to the Telangana government without any tender and that the former Union minister had allegedly secured 4.95 acres of land in Andhra Pradesh reserved for the poor and the destitute.

The party, questioning probity in public life as accountability and transparency, asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah to come forward and reply in the context of the “repeated rhetoric of zero tolerance for corruption and wrongdoing”.

“At least 48 hours have passed without any reply from either of them. As always, the Prime Minister and BJP President have chosen to keep mum,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a statement.

“Replies given by the BJP’s Vice Presidential nominee as also in his defence by the TRS government of Telangana have left more questions than answers,” he added.

Asking a few questions of Naidu, the Congress said: “The Telangana government and Naidu have admitted that the ‘Swarna Bharat Trust’ of his daughter Deepa Venkat was given exemption from paying developmental charges amounting to Rs 2,46,00,000 to Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority.”

“Naidu has sought to justify this unilateral waiver by saying that 16 more trusts were given exemption,” the party said.

“What the Telangana government and Naidu did not tell, as to why similar exemption was not granted to hundreds of other NGOs by the government? What was the criteria for grant of exemption in payment of government charges of Rs 2.46 crore to her NGO in absence of any policy or rationale?” Surjewala asked in a statement.

“Is it not a fact that the ‘Swarna Bharat Trust’ has been issued a notice under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010. Is it fair to grant exemption in payment of ‘public charges’ to a trust that is facing FCRA proceedings?,” he added.

Surjewala said: “As regards supply of vehicles by Harsha Toyota to Telangana government without any tender, the state government has accepted that 350 Toyota vehicles were purchased directly from Harsha Toyota.”

“Interestingly, as per the government, the 350 vehicles purchased from Harsha Toyota were supposedly purchased under DGS&D rates, while the next lot of 350 vehicles were purchased through tender in which another dealer i.e. ‘Radha Krishna Motors’ became a successful tenderer.”

“Why were both the lots of vehicles not purchased through tender in the first instance? Was the conditionality of tender violated in the purchase of first lot of vehicles from ‘Harsha Toyota’? What is the price at which the two lots of vehicles i.e. the first lot supplied by ‘Harsha Toyota’ and second lot supplied by ‘Radha Krishna Motors’ were purchased?

“Was the price of vehicles purchased from ‘Harsha Toyota’ higher than the vehicles purchased through tender from ‘Radha Krishna Motors’?” he added.

The party also said: “Naidu has admitted that he was the National BJP President and consequently the chairman of ‘Kushabhau Thakre Memorial Trust’, which was allocated 20 acres of land in Bhopal valued at a few hundred crores.

“Is it not a fact that the Supreme Court quashed the allocation of land,” it asked.

“Naidu has not denied that he had secured 4.95 acres of land in Andhra Pradesh reserved for the poor and the destitute. Is it not a fact that he was forced to return the land as the same was illegally allocated to him? Does it absolve him of his culpability?” asked Surjewala.

BJP playing tricks on TS-AP : Holdup on delimitation of constituencies again

0

Government’s agenda for the Monsoon Session of the Parliament failed to include the bill facilitating increase in assembly seats in the Telugu speaking states. Every time ahead of the parliament sessions, reports emerge that the delimitation of constituencies will take place but there is hardly any progress. Likewise, there is no mention of the delimitation of assembly constituencies despite TDP and TRS raising the issue in the all-party meeting held on Sunday.

From past two years in every session, the government has been giving a written reply that it is not going ahead with the increase in assembly seats for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till 2026.

The monsoon sessions which commence on Monday, would discuss total of 34 bills of which 16 are bills while 21 bills are pending in Lok Sabha. TRS and TDP demanded that the bill be introduced in some way during this session. Chief Ministers and MPs were exerting pressure on the centre for quite some time now.

In the previous session, the government replied that delimitation will not take place till 2026. However, Union Minister Venkiah Naidu has announced that the Centre is optimistic about the reorganization of the constituencies.

As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, the current 175 seats in Andhra Pradesh will be increased to 225, while Telangana will have 119 Assembly seats in 153. It is known that there are constitutional clauses which are acting as a stumbling block to implement the seat hike.

Several reports emerged that cabinet note is being prepared, but there is hardly any progress ever since. This is causing worry in the ruling parties in Telugu states. The TDP and TRS parties, are planning to mount pressure on the government, so that the bill can be introduced in the middle of the session. BJP is clearly playing tricks with the Telugu states in relation to reorganization of the constituencies so far by Union Ministers.

Why did BJP fail to protect Amarnath pilgrims: Owaisi

0

Condemning the terror attack on the Amarnath pilgrims, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday asked the Modi government to explain why it failed to protect them despite intelligence warnings about a possible attack.

The Hyderabad MP told reporters here that he strongly condemned the attack as nobody had a right to kill innocent people.

Stating that this was the second terror attack on Amarnath pilgrims after the BJP came to power, Owaisi demanded that the government should explain why it failed to ensure their safety despite intelligence warning which was carried by the media on June 26.

“The BJP is in power at the Centre and is also ruling Jammu and Kashmir along with the PDP. It is the moral responsibility of the government to tell people why they failed,” said the Lok Sabha member.

He pointed out that Kashmiri terrorist Syed Salahuddin in an interview to The Telegraph had indicated that such attacks would be carried out.

“It’s time the BJP at the Centre does some course correction,” he added.

He alleged that Salahuddin along with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) wanted to create a 2008-like situation in the Kashmir Valley.

Slamming those trying to do politics over the killing of innocent pilgrims, Owaisi said they should not allow LeT and ISI to create problems.

“We should also keep in mind what China is doing on the Sikkim border.”

Referring to the arrest of one Sandeep Kumar from Uttar Pradesh for his links with the LeT outfit, the MP said it raised an important question.

He also found fault with the Shiv Sena for linking the Amarnath Yatra with Haj pilgrims.

He said if Shiv Sena was angry and upset over the terror attack, it should take out its anger on the government.

He asked Shiv Sena to explain why it continued to support the BJP government when the latter failed to provide safety and security to the Amarnath pilgrims.

Ram Nath Kovind begins campaign in Telangana, Andhra

NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday began his campaign in Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

A day after opposition parties’ nominee Meira Kumar visited Hyderabad, Kovind arrived in the city to bolster his support.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) accorded him a warm welcome at the Begumpet Airport.

Central Ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu, Bandaru Dattatreya, BJP’s Telangana unit chief K. Laxman, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mehmood Ali, Ministers N. Narasimha Reddy and Harish Rao were among the leaders who welcomed Kovind.

He later left for Haritha Plaza hotel to meet the BJP’s members of Parliament and state legislators.

This would be followed by a meeting with leaders of YSRCP, the opposition party of Andhra Pradesh which has already declared its support to him. YSRCP chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and party MPs and MLAs will interact with him.

Kovind would then have a meeting with leaders of Telangana’s ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which too, has announced its support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee.

TRS President and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, party MPs and MLAs will meet the former Bihar Governor.

The TRS erected huge hoardings at busy intersections in the city to welcome him. The hoardings carry pictures of Kovind and Chandrasekhar Rao.

After meeting with TRS legislators, Kovind would then leave for Vijayawada where he would meet TDP President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and other leaders.

GST rolls out past midnight from Central Hall of Parliament

The Goods and Services Tax (GST), India’s biggest tax reform since Independence, rolled out past midnight Friday in the precincts of the hallowed Central Hall of Parliament to usher in a new indirect tax regime in an event that sought to evoke memories of the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ night the country got freedom in 1947.

A minute after the stroke of midnight, President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pressed the button to launch the new indirect tax regime on a digital screen with “GST” emblazoned on it in a golden hue.

Conceived on the principle of ‘one nation, one tax, one market’, the tax that subsumes 17 central and state levies was launched in the presence of Vice President Hamid Ansari, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, MPs, chief ministers, state finance ministers, officials of the Centre and states.

Notwithstanding the fact that the GST Law was a consensus product evolved over 14 years, the function in colorfully-decked Parliament House was boycotted by major opposition parties like Congress, Trinamool Congress, RJD, DMK and Left parties, saying the government was making a spectacle of a legislation for self-promotion, a charge Jaitley rejected. In keeping with his party’s decision, former Primer Minister Manmohan Singh kept away from the event. However, MPs and leaders of Congress allies NCP and Samajwadi Party attended the function.

Addressing the gathering, President Pranab Mukherjee said the introduction of GST is a moment of precedent for the country and a matter of personal satisfaction for him because of his role as Finance Minister earlier. “I had always believed that GST was a matter of time and was happy when it was enacted and I gave assent to the Constitution amendment last year,” he said.

He said the new law is a tribute to the maturity and wisdom of Indian democracy. The GST Council was a unique experiment under the Indian Constitution because of the shared sovereignty.

In his speech, Modi said the roll out of GST is the best example of cooperative federalism and success of Indian democracy. “The credit for the new law does not go to one party or one government but was a shared legacy of all,” he said.

In a veiled rejoinder to opposition criticism of the midnight function in Parliament, the Prime Minister said there cannot be a “better and sacred” venue than the Central Hall for the historic roll out.

The GST process cannot be confined to just economic system but was a collective effort of all, he said, adding it was a product of long discussions among the best brains of the country. “It is an example of Team India’s strength and ability,” he said.

Referring to the eminent personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Babu Rajendra Prasad who had adorned the Central Hall, Modi said like Patel had integrated the country, the GST would integrate the country economically.

He described the GST as ‘Good and Simple Tax’ — good because there will be no tax on tax and simple because there will be only one form of tax. It will also help eliminate black money and corruption because of the transparency it seeks to bring in, he said.

Modi said whatever was lacking in growth and development of the country, GST will provide the opportunity to realise them.

Ahead of the launch, the GST Council slashed the rate of fertilisers from 12 per cent to 5 per cent and of exclusive parts of tractors from 28 per cent to 18 per cent to reduce the burden on farmers.

The launch of GST, which the government claimed would result in reduction of prices of articles of common consumption, also came amidst fears from various business sections that prices would go up under the new regime.

Welcoming the gathering, Jaitley described GST as the biggest and most ambitious tax reform which is an achievement of the country through consensus. It highlights the fact that India can rise above narrow politics and work for country’s benefit. In making the GST, neither the Centre nor the states gave up their sovereignty.

He said all MPs, state governments, political parties, state finance ministers and dedicated officials of the Centre and states deserved to be appreciated for realising the project of GST Law.

Jaitley said under GST, the revenues will go up as the compliance goes up and the GDP will also increase.

Parliament’s Central Hall has witnessed such a function only on three occasions earlier. First was on the occasion of Independence when first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech. The second was on the occasion of silver jubilee of Independence in 1972 and golden jubilee in 1997.

The GST is expected to check tax evasion and broaden tax base. In the new regime, all filings will be done only through electronic mode to ensure non-intrusive administration. This will minimise taxpayers’ physical interaction with the tax officials.

The GST regime seeks to reduce rates of over 50 per cent of items of daily use and charge others at much lower rate of 5 per cent, 12 per cent and 18 per cent.

A higher tax rate is imposed on luxury and sin goods at 28 per cent in the new regime. Certain services like telephone, banking and insurance are expected to feel the pinch of higher taxes.

The GST also promises taxpayers a refund against their sales within 60 days. Similarly, exporters will get refund within seven days. For protection of consumer rights, the new law provides anti-profiteering provisions. In a departure from the normal practice, the GST will be administered together by the Centre and the states.

Owaisi takes a dig at Modi-Nitesh deal, questions the fate of Telangana Bhavan

0

Member of Parliament Lok Sabha and President All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen Party Asaduddin Owaisi taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitesh Kumar’s deal, asked the reason for the centre not reconciling the dispute of Telangana Bhavan when it could settle the Bihar Bhavan issue.

Indian Express reported that the Central Government handed over the Bihar Niwas to Bihar Government days before Chief Minister Nitesh Kumar pledged support to NDA Presidential Candidate Ram Nath Kovind. As per the report, Union Home Ministry persuaded the Jharkhand government to accept the compensation and give up on the Bihar Niwas, in Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi. As per the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000, one third of Bihar assets have to be transferred to Jharkhand.

It may be recalled that Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been fighting over the distribution of assets. It may be noted that there were wrangles over the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan Complex on Ashoka Road in New Delhi which has both Telangana and Andhra Bhavan and offices of both the governments. The attitude of central government to resolve the asset distribution concerns of the Telugu states has been ineffectual.

Terming it “Pork Barell politics” between BJP and JDU, Asaduddin took to twitter seeking the reason for not securing Telangana Bhavan. It may be noted that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao despite not being an ally of NDA, extended support to Ram Nath Kovind.

Dalit for President: Tokenism wins

0

It’s a no-brainer, for the result is known before the contest. The support which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been able to muster for its presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind in the electoral college will give him an easy ride to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Even then, the confrontation between him and the opposition’s nominee, Meira Kumar, will provide an idea of the contours of the bigger battle which awaits the two sides in less than two years.

For the moment, the BJP has the edge. The party may succeed in retaining it till the 2019 general election. But the margin between the combatants is not written in stone. The chances of it changing, therefore, cannot be ruled out if the BJP’s outreach to the Dalits via Kovind fails to make an impact on the community or if the farmers’ agitations show no sign of abating.

The very fact that the BJP chose a Dalit underlined its nervousness over the widening of the gulf between the community and the party ever since the bright young Dalit scholar, Rohith Vemula, was virtually driven to suicide in Hyderabad by the combined hounding of the saffron apparatchiki among students, the university authorities and the ministers in Delhi.

The more recent clashes between the Dalits and the upper-caste Thakurs in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where a Thakur is the Chief Minister, and the earlier lynching of a group of Dalits at Una, Gujarat, by gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes) for skinning a dead cow, their traditional occupation, have deepened the sense of alienation among the Dalits towards the Hindutva brigade.

There was no alternative, therefore, for the BJP but to try to douse the flames by momentarily suppressing its ‘savarna’ (upper caste) instincts and opting for a Dalit President. It is anybody’s guess, however, whether the act of tokenism will succeed, for few among the Dalits will believe that the saffron brotherhood’s ingrained bias against the lower castes is about to undergo a dramatic change.

In real life, therefore, outside the heated atmosphere of Lutyens Delhi, the electoral arithmetic is likely to remain more or less the same, as will the efforts by a new generation of young Dalits emerging from Saharanpur and Una to put together a Dalit-Muslim alliance.

However, since tokenism begets tokenism, the Congress-led 17-member opposition group has also fielded a Dalit, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, to oppose Kovind. Most observers are likely to regard her as a sacrificial lamb in view of the virtual impossibility of her coming anywhere near the winning post. But what she can introduce into a campaign whose outcome is known is the ideological difference between the multicultural “idea of India”, which she represents, and the monolithic “idea of Hindu rashtra”, which her opponent with his roots in the Hindu supremacist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) stands for.

If the BJP’s nominee indeed believes that the Muslims and Christians are aliens in India, he will set off a controversy which the BJP will not relish at a time when it is laboriously trying to feel its way through the labyrinthine diversity of the country’s cultural scene as the party’s contradictory takes on what the people can eat have shown.

Apart from the ideological battles, what is clear is that caste has become the leitmotif of the Presidential election, underlying a step backwards towards the country’s primordial past when a person’s worth was mostly judged on the basis of his birth at the expense of his or her intrinsic merits.

In the BJP’s case, however, Kovind’s caste credentials were reinforced by his persona. His low-key style evidently made him an ideal choice in Narendra Modi’s presidential mode of governance where one man, viz, the Prime Minister, towers over the rest. In such a milieu, the palpably modest Kovind, who was seen as an ideal Governor in Bihar by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, fits the bill.

Kovind’s moderation is another point in his favour, for he appears to be quite unlike the forthright Governor of Tripura, Tathagata Roy of the BJP, who wanted those who attended the terrorist Yakub Memon’s funeral to be kept under permanent surveillance as potential subversives.

Only time will show whether Kovind will be as ideal a President as he was the Governor in Bihar. Considering that the BJP’s 2002 choice as President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, once sent the office of profit bill back to the cabinet, as a President is entitled to do, and publicly regretted the signing of the resolution dissolving the Bihar assembly in 2005, Kovind will have to live up to high standards.

India has seen submissive Presidents such as Giani Zail Singh, who famously said that he was willing to sweep the floor if his leader Indira Gandhi asked him to do so, and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, who infamously signed the proclamation for throttling democracy on the morning of June 25, 1975 without asking whether it had been approved by the cabinet.

The new President will have to show that his only allegiance is to the “holy book” of the Constitution as the Prime Minister has described the manuscript.

NDA presidential candidate to file papers before June 24

0

The ruling National Democratic Alliance’s candidate for the July 17 presidential election will file his nomination papers before June 24, and the opposition parties would be informed of the name before the papers are filed.

BJP sources said the nomination will be filed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves on his three-nation foreign tour. Modi is slated to visit Portugal on June 24, before his trip to the US on June 26 and the Netherlands on June 27.

Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday held discussions with Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, who heads the Lok Janshakti Party, on the July 17 presidential election.

Naidu also held discussions with Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav and Naresh Agrawal.

Paswan said his party will stand by the Prime Minister’s decision while the Samajwadi Party is understood to have favoured a politician as the new President.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, part of the three-meber panel set up by Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah to evolve a consensus among ruling and opposition parties on the presidential choice, has spoken to leaders of the Trinamool Congress and Biju Janata Dal.

Informed sources said Naidu briefed Shah about his discussions.

Shah on Sunday met ally and Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aditya in Mumbai to ensure the Sena’s crucial support in the presidential election.

Is a consensus possible on the new President?

0

For a party known for its hubris, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) decision to consult the opposition for a consensus on the presidential candidate has come as a pleasant surprise.

However, it is possible that its majority in the electoral college has enabled the party to display a show of magnanimity.

At the same time, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Venkaiah Naidu, has reminded the opposition parties that although the consultations will take place in the “true spirit of a democracy”, they must remember that “the mandate of the people is for the government.”

Naidu is one of the three chosen by the BJP to interact with the opposition. The other two are Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

However, the chances of a consensus candidate being chosen will brighten only if the BJP refuses to abide by the wish reportedly conveyed by its mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), that the party must utilise the advantage of a majority in the electoral college to choose a person who is a Hindutva ideologue.

Considering that the RSS has succeeded in planting saffron aficionados in a fairly large number of “autonomous” institutions, including the Indian Council of Historical Research and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, it is unlikely to be hesitant about having a man of its choice in Rashtrapati Bhavan — the best prize of all.

Perhaps reading its mind, the Shiv Sena had suggested RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s name as the next President. The Maharashtrian party may have also wanted to test the BJP’s sincerity to the cause of Hindutva, for it has said that Bhagwat will be a good choice to turn India into a Hindu rashtra (nation).

However, after Bhagwat himself turned down the proposal, the Sena has opted for M.S. Swaminathan, known as the father of India’s “green revolution” in agriculture. The name of E. Sreedharan, the engineer who built the world-class Delhi Metro, has also been mentioned. Needless to say, both are eminently suitable for the high office if only because of their distance from politics.

There might have been a faint chance of a compromise between the BJP and the “secular” parties if L.K. Advani’s name was put forward. However, the BJP’s margdarshak (visionary) has not been a favourite of the RSS ever since he praised Mohammed Ali Jinnah during a visit to Pakistan. Indeed, he had to leave the party president’s post soon afterwards.

More recently, however, his involvement in the Babri Masjid demolition case as a “conspirator” has effectively ruled out his chances. Similarly, Murli Manohar Joshi, who is known to be close to the RSS, has also lost the opportunity for making it to the big house on top of the Raisina Hill because of the Babri Masjid case.

Cynics have said that the reopening of the case against them by the Central Bureau of Investigation was meant by the powers that be to keep them out of reckoning, for neither of them is believed to enjoy Narendra Modi’s trust.

However, another person, who was not delighted with Modi’s elevation in the BJP before the general election, viz. Sushma Swaraj, has come to the forefront. She has several plus points. One is her humanitarian acts as the external affairs minister where her help is required by, among others, by stranded NRIs and ailing Pakistanis. The other, and more important, is that she is believed to enjoy the backing of the RSS.

Among the other front-runners are Draupadi Murmu, the governor of Jharkhand, and Sumitra Mahajan, the Lok Sabha Speaker.

The choice of Murmu, a tribal, will enable the BJP to reach out to one of the most neglected communities in the country, about whom the now virtually forgotten but undoubtedly their foremost leader, Jaipal Singh Munda (1903-1970), told the Constituent Assembly that “the whole history of my people is one of continuous exploitation and dispossession by the non-aboriginals of India”.

It is clear that none of the BJP’s opponents will oppose her choice for obvious reasons. But whether Murmu herself will be interested is unclear, for the President’s post can be the end of the road where a political career is concerned. Being 59 years old, a relatively young age for a politician, she may be unwilling to put a full stop to any further advancement in politics. Rumours have it, therefore, that she is keener on a cabinet berth at the Centre.

A consensus is also possible on Mahajan, for she has shown herself to be temperamentally calm. But this may be the very reason why the RSS is said to be against her.

In less fraught times, it may have been possible to evolve a consensus on the former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, who, as a Dalit and with a distinguished lineage — she is Jagjivan Ram’s daughter — may have had claims similar to Murmu’s for being selected for the highest constitutional position in the land.

But her Congress background ruins her chances straightaway in view of the BJP’s avowed intention of making India Congress-mukt (free). Moreover, the RSS would have been appalled to find a Congress person once again becoming the President.

If the Congress is an untouchable for the saffron lobby, so are the Muslims, which is why the Vice President Hamid Ansari did not have a chance. And there is no one like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam around, who was a nationalist despite being a Muslim, as Minister for Culture Mahesh Sharma said.

The Left parties have been pushing for Gopal Krishna Gandhi, a grandson of the “chatur bania” (clever trader) as BJP president Amit Shah descried Mahatma Gandhi.

But for all his credentials — a former governor and diplomat and related to the Mahatma and C. Rajagopalachari — his palpable secularism is a black mark where the Modi dispensation is concerned.

BJP, opposition hold parleys on Presidential election

The ruling and the opposition parties on Wednesday got going on the presidential election with the three-member BJP committee poised to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday in a bid to evolve a consensus on the nominee.

On the other side, opposition leaders held preliminary discussions on the issue but decided to meet again for detailed parleys after government makes public its choice of candidate.

The BJP core committee met on Wednesday morning in the presence of party President Amit Shah, where senior ministers Rajnath Singh and M. Venkaiah Naidu, who form part of the three-member group were also present. Later, Singh and Naidu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the strategy.

Later it was disclosed that the three-member team, which includes Arun Jaitley, will meet Sonia Gandhi probably with the name the ruling side would like to field as part of efforts to build a consensus. It was not clear whether Jaitley, who is currently in South Korea, will be back in the capital in time for the meeting.

The team will later meet CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. Naidu spoke to BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra and NCP leader Praful Patel over phone. He was told that the two parties will firm up their stand only after the BJP panel meets them formally.

Among the names doing the rounds as possible NDA candidate are Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik. There is talk in the BJP circles that the RSS could pitch for another veteran Murli Manohar Joshi. A surprise could be in the form of Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu, a tribal from Odisha.

With an edge in the electoral college, the BJP is said to be of the opinion that it should have its own candidate who has an ideological background since it is the party in power. Naidu indicated as much on Tuesday when he said that opposition should keep in mind the spirit of democracy that the BJP has the mandate of the people.

Meanwhile, BJP’s oldest ally Shiv Sena on Wednesday yet again made it clear that its “first choice” for NDA’s presidential candidate is RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

Sena MP Sanjay Raut said: “Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat is the most deserving person to be the President of India. Will they (BJP) speak to us regarding this? If you think he is not the deserving candidate, tell us why he is not the suitable candidate.

“You give us another name, but for us Mohan Bhagwat saheb is the first choice for NDA’s presidential candidate.”

The Sena has been demanding that RSS chief should be nominated as the NDA’s presidentail candidate, even though Bhagwat has said that he is not in the race.

The Sena has not voted with the BJP in the last two presidential elections. A candidate from Maharashtra like Naik or Bhagwat or even Mahajan, a Marathi who represents Indore in Madhya Pradesh, could ensure its support to the NDA candidate. Likewise, the candidature of Murmu could bring Odisha’s ruling BJD to the government side in the presidential election though the two parties are bitter rivals in the state.

Leaders of nine opposition parties, who form a sub-group, met in parliament house in the chamber of the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, who told reporters later that no names were discussed in their meeting.

“It was a preliminary meeting. No nitty gritty nor names were discussed. All parties are totally united,” he said.

Azad said even as the opposition leaders were meeting, it has been disclosed that the three-member team constituted by BJP to hold discussion with opposition parties for a consensus will meet opposition leaders including Gandhi.

“No finalisation of name is possible,” he said adding the sub group of the opposition parties will meet in the next few days and discuss in detail by when the government would have also discussed with the opposition parties its choice.

Azad said the future discussion among the opposition parties will depend on the candidate the ruling side choose and the party he belongs to.

“Then only we can have substantial discussions,” he said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal Chief Lalu Prasad told the media that they would “remove” BJP.

Among those who attended the meeting in Azad’s chamber were Yechury, Sharad Yadav, (JD-U), Patel, Ram Gopal Yadav (SP), Mishra, Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress), Derek O’Brien (Trinamool Congress), and R.S. Bharti (DMK).

Gali Janardhan Reddy vows to bring BJP to power in Karnataka, Telangana and AP

0

Denying reports that he will contest in the next state assembly elections next year, former BJP minister and beleaguered mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy on Saturday said, “I will not contest any election, but will work hard to bring the BJP back to power, not only in Karnataka, but also in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.”

Mr Reddy, who is out on conditional bail in alleged illegal mining related cases, arrived in Ballari on Wednesday after getting permission from the Supreme Court to celebrate his 25 wedding anniversary in his hometown among friends and supporters. Mr Reddy performed a pooja at the temple of Kanaka Durgamma, the principal deity of the town, with his family members.

After visiting the temple, Mr Reddy told reporters, “The question of contesting elections in 2018, directly or indirectly, does not arise under any circumstances or for any reason. I am a loyal BJP worker and am ready to handle party affairs given an opportunity,” he said.

He said that the BJP is gearing up for assembly elections in Karnataka under the leadership of state party president B.S. Yeddyurappa, and he will work hard to make Mr Yeddyurappa the chief minister after the 2018 elections.

He said, “I want to see Mr Narendra Modi as Prime Minister again after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. For that reason, if possible, I will campaign in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to bring the BJP to power in the two states, where I have my own political strength.”

Sources said that Mr Reddy is likely to play a key role in bringing his alleged business ally and YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy into the NDA fold ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and to bring the BJP to power in the two Telugu states.

Though Mr Reddy ruled out contesting elections, sources said that his friends and followers, who are visiting him in Ballari, are pressurising him to get back into electoral politics.

In turn, he told them that if Bharatiya Janata Party’s top brass gives the green signal, he will consider it, the sources said.

“Mr Reddy wants to come back to active politics and handle party affairs, but it remains to be seen how the central leadership will consider his re-entry into electoral politics ahead of the 2018 polls, since the party lost power to Congress in 2013 over the mining scam where Reddy was kingpin,” a senior BJP leader said.

BJP will remember Pawan Kalyan till 2019 : Vishnu Kumar

0

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Venkaiah Naidu reminded the Andhra Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party leaders that the Telugu Desam Party is their ally on Saturday. He reiterated it is inapt to discuss about alliances of the next elections now.

Vishakapatnam North BJP MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju seems to have taken the advice seriously. On one hand, he was praising TDP leader and Minister for Roads and Buildings Ch Ayyanna Patrudu for responding to the Vishaka Land Scam. He further said that had all the leaders been like Ayyanna, the state would have been developed by now. While Vishnukumar was praising one TDP leader, he attacked TDP MP Kesineni Nani and demanded him to resign immediately for his comments against BJP.

The saffron party leader did not confine himself to TDP and referring to Pawan Kalyan quoted that BJP doesn’t believe in disregarding someone after their purpose is solved. Vishnu Kumar asserted that Kalyan helped them in 2014 elections, so they will remember him till 2019. He further said that someone is misleading Kalyan on special category status and like any other BJP leader, he rehearsed that the Central government approved special package is way better than SCS. He critiqued the Jana Sena Chief for still hanging around with the SCS subject.

It is known that Kalyan is showing inclination towards left parties. On the contrary, Venkaiah asked his party leaders to ignore the communist parties and quoted the recent five-state Assembly polls where the left parties did not secure even a single seat.

Vishnu Kumar said that 2019 elections are very crucial for BJP in the state. Even Venkaiah asked the activists to strengthen the party and enlighten the people about the central government schemes. BJP doesn’t want to forget Kalyan or Chandrababu, but what about the promises to the Telugu people they have backtracked on? The saffron brigade keeps talking about special package, the answers for Kadapa steel plant, Vishaka Railway Zone, Vijayawada metro rail and all the provisions of AP re-organisation act are yet to be know.

Centre is not against buying and selling of cattle: Venkaiah

0

The notification of NDA government called Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Market) Rules which bans the sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets is facing severe backlash. This will severely hit the farmers of drought-hit Rayalaseema region where selling aged cattle is a routine; especially where scarcity of fodder is a problem in itself. Several activists who support the ban are asking farmers to buy cattle-feed by selling the urine and dung to those who make fertilisers. But this is no answer to the question of increasing supply of fodder in a region which is hit by drought for 8years in a row. Farmers sell the aged cattle to buy the new ones and hardly care about who they are selling as long as they are paid well.

Speaking at an inaugural function in Ongole, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the government is not against buying and selling of cattle. He said that the Centre is not interfering with the food habits of people. He further said that the BJP led government at the Centre is against killing of livestock which are useful for farming.

The prevention of the sale of cows and buffaloes for slaughter by the saffron party is indirectly perceived as beef ban. The animals which include bulls, cows, buffaloes, steers, heifers and camels can be sold in the market only after they legally mention that the cattle have not been “brought to the market for sale for slaughter”.

It been around three years and the government owes disbursal of crop loss compensation to farmers of Rayalaseema region. As the government continues to neglect the region, the dry land is on the verge of going barren. The Andhra Pradesh state reorganisation bill has mentioned a package to Rayalaseema and North Andhra regions as per the Bundelkhand model. While, the story of depriving Andhra Pradesh of the promises in reorganisation act by the central government has become a norm, this ban will only increase the farmers’ distresses in the region.

Chandrababu Naidu asks TDP leaders not to talk about alliance

Vijayawada: Telugu Desam Party national president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had asked the party leaders to stop talking about alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) till 2019. He had made this statement very clear to the rank and file of the party after his re-election as the party national president at Visakhapatnam. The BJP leadership too had given a similar call to its ranks on the alliance and thus the parties have silenced the warring leaders in both the parties.
Chandrababu Naidu said that the two parties have decided on alliance in the larger interests of the party during the last elections. He said that the two parties have benefited from the alliance and are now partners in the governments at the Center and in the State as well. The alliance has to be continued for this term, he said and wanted the leaders not to touch the issue till the end of the current term.

The BJP leadership too had given a similar direction to its leaders who have been vocal on the alliance with the TDP. A good number of the BJP leaders in the State have been pressing for breaking the alliance for some time now. They see the alliance as a greater hurdle for the BJP’s expansion in the State and are in a hurry to break the alliance.

However, the heads of the two parties have given a clear indication on the continuation of the alliance and have directed the leaders to stop talking about the issue in open putting an end to the speculation over the break up.

Chandrababu Naidu’s direction to the leaders on the alliance is set to silence its leaders, but it is to be seen whether the BJP leaders would also honour the alliance and maintain silence or would continue to speak creating confusion.

AP BJP disowns Kavuri’s comments on Naidu

0

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party had disowned the statement of the party senior leader Kavuri Sambasiva Rao that the graph of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was falling. Kavuri had made this statement during the visit of BJP national president Amit Shah on May 25 and had requested the party to break the alliance. He had even briefed Amit Shah in one-to-one meeting and emphasised the need to move out of TDP and build BJP in the State.

The BJP State secretary Jammula Shyam Kishore announced that the statement of Kavuri Sambasiva Rao was his own and the BJP is not ready to subscribe to it. He said that as a leader of the party, Sambasiva Rao had expressed his views on the alliance with the TDP and also on the possibilities of strengthening the BJP in the State. However, he said that the BJP, as a party, would not support the views expressed by Sambasiva Rao that the graph of the TDP and Chandrababu Naidu was falling.

He further said that several leaders have met Amit Shah and gave their own views on the party and its future in the State. He said it was all left to the party national leadership to decide on the alliance for the next elections scheduled to be held in 2019.

Though the BJP leadership had disowned the statement of Sambasiva Rao and many others that the party should distance from the TDP before the next elections, these leaders have intensified the lobbying to break the alliance. These leaders feel that expansion of BJP in Andhra Pradesh is possible only if the party distanced from the TDP. It is to be seen how the BJP national leadership would react and help the party’s growth in the State.

BJP is doing better in TDP government, claims Shah

0

Vijayawada: BJP national president Amit Shah had claimed that his party Ministers in the Telugu Desam government in AP were doing better services. Though he did not compare the BJP Minister’s performance with the TDP Ministers, Shah claimed that one of the two BJP Ministers in AP Cabinet, had received national and international appreciation. He patted AP Minister for Health, Kamineni Srinivas of the BJP, for receiving prestigious awards for the Ministry in the State.

Amit Shah, addressed the party booth level workers here on Thursday saw a good beginning for the BJP in Andhra Pradesh. He claimed that Vijayawada, the land of victory, will give greater victory for BJP in the State soon. He wanted every household in the State to celebrate the next visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the State. He wanted the party leaders and the people to celebrate the visit with lights, fireworks and colours as Modi’s government had given the funds and the projects which were not received after Independence.

The BJP chief claimed that the NDA government had given Rs 1.75 lakh crore to the State in the last three years and had given 11 Central Institutions besides taking up total funding of the Polavaram Porject. Referring to the demand for special category status, Amit Shah said that the BJP-led government at the Center had given equal benefits through Special Package. He said that the special category status was not possible as the 14th Finance Commission had recommended against it and wanted the people to understand the difficulties.

Though some of the BJP activists displayed placards saying “Leave TDP – Save BJP”, Amit Shah did not respond to the slogan. He opted to be silent on the alliance with the TDP leaving the issue for the leaders to keep guessing.

Kavuri favours BJP’s break up with TDP in AP

0

Vijayawada: Former Union minister, Kavuri Samba Siva Rao, with all his Congress roots and now in the BJP, pressed for the breakup of the alliance between the BJP and TDP in the State. Sambasiva Rao met BJP national president Amit Shah here on Thursday and briefed him about the party’s prospects in the State. He had reportedly told the BJP chief that the party has bright chances to expand in the State in the absence of Congress and the failure of the YSR Congress to play Opposition role.

Emerging out of the meeting with Amit Shah, Sambasiva Rao told media persons that he had explained in detail to the party chief about the prevailing political situation in the State. He said that the graph of the TDP was falling alarmingly and it would also reflect on the BJP if the alliance continued. The corruption levels in the State have gone up and have even surpassed the corruption existed during Y S Rajasekhar Reddy’s time.

The former Union minister said that the Janma Bhoomi committees constituted by the TDP government in the State were doing great injustice to both the TDP and the BJP governments. The members of the Janma Bhoomi committees were not allowing the welfare programmes to reach out to the common people. “The schemes are restricted only to the ruling party leaders,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu hosted a lunch in his river view residence at Undavalli for Amit Shah, where the leaders have reportedly discussed about the alliance. While Amit Shah is firm on expanding his party in the State, Chandrababu Naidu understood to have emphasised the need to continue the alliance in the larger interests of the two parties.

Though a section of the TDP leaders too are unwilling to continue the alliance, Naidu is not in a mood to discontinue the alliance as that would force him to have a fighting with the Center.
