Can KCR be an alternative to TDP in AP?

0

Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has set his eyes on Andhra Pradesh to get a foothold for his Bharat Rastra Samithi (BRS) to get the national party recognition. He is known to the people of Andhra Pradesh and enjoys strong contacts with some leaders here, because of his connections as Youth Congress leader in the beginning and the TDP leader later.

Sources say that KCR is looking at Andhra Pradesh to have a footing for the party to be recognised as the national party. Besides Telangana, KCR needs to have the party’s presence in three more states and Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra are now on the top of the list. He is also having plans to enter Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, the sources said.

In his attempt to gain a foothold in Andhra Pradesh, KCR is restoring his contacts with some leaders in the state. Sources said that former MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar is doing the ground work for KCR in giving contacts to start the BRS unit in the state.

KCR held a prolonged meeting with Arun Kumar a couple of months before he renamed his party on October 5. Arun Kumar is currently not with any political party. However, he is active politically and has updated information about Andhra Pradesh and other states.

Sources say that KCR would be setting his eyes on the TPD leaders as he enjoys greater support from them. He also has wide contacts with the TDP leaders and is said to be making attempts to win over them.

The TDP had lost its presence in Telangana and is in the opposition in Andhra Pradesh. If the party loses the 2024 elections, it would be difficult for the party to survive. KCR is said to be asking the TDP leaders to join him for the national platform.

It is to be seen how the TDP leaders would react to this offer and what measures that the TDP would take to save its leaders.

KCR’s national party to start expanding from Maharashtra

0

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), formerly the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), will make a beginning from Maharashtra to expand its activities nationwide, party President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said on Wednesday.

He said the party would pick up Maharashtra as the first field of activity by launching the farmers’ wing of the party from there.

Rao stated this during his speech at the general body meeting of the TRS, which unanimously passed a resolution to change the party’s name to the BRS.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, also made it clear that while continuing as the Chief Minister, he would visit all parts of the country. “We will not leave the ground. No one should have any doubts about this,” he told party leaders.

KCR’s remarks came amid speculations in political circles that his son K.T. Rama Rao will take over as the Chief Minister while he will focus on national politics.

The TRS founder called for developing a bright India. “If resources of our country are used within the country, we can develop better than America. We still have time. We will expand across the country,” said KCR, who has his eyes set on 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The Chief Minister also stated that if good happens to the country because of Telangana, this would go down well in the country’s history.

KCR also revealed that Dalit, farmers’, and tribal movements would be carried forward as the main agenda. He vowed to remove social and political disorders across the country. “Telangana has already shown this to the country. We will take stock of the evolving situation from time to time and move forward,” he said

He called for taking the country forward just as the Telangana movement was carried to victory. He claimed that Telangana ensured development of every community. He said both the rural and urban areas in the state have developed and the awards announced by the Centre were a proof of this.

He recalled that the TRS made a beginning 21 years ago. ” Within a short time after achieving Telangana state, we moved forward rapidly by implementing development programmes in all sectors including agriculture, electricity, irrigation and drinking water. The neighbouring states are wonderstruck by seeing programmes in Telangana state. All this was possible because every action is being executed with utmost commitment.”

KCR said that in the 75 years of Independent India, parties that ruled the country have done nothing for the country except coming to power or leaving power. He claimed that politics is a task for the TRS, while for other parties it is only a game.

“We worked with commitment as activists for the development of Telangana. Due to hard work, great achievements have been made. The per capita income of Telangana was only Rs one lakhA when the state came into existence but today it has increased to Rs 2.78 lakh. Telangana’s GSDP was Rs 5. 6 lakh crore in 2014 and today it has reached to Rs 11.50 lakh crore,” he said.

KCR called for working hard and collectively for the country’s development on the lines the TRS strove for the development of Telangana state.

“It is not a hasty decision to float a national party. India is a union of states. Comprehensive development is possible only if the states and the country develop together. Telangana’s GSDP is originally supposed to be Rs 14.5 lakh crore. But Telangana is not able to achieve the development it deserves due to the short-sighted and irrelevant policies adopted by the Union Government. Many of the sacrifices made for the independence of this country remain unfulfilled.”

The Chief Minister attributed the rapid development achieved by Telangana to out-of-box thinking and innovative programmes implemented in the state. He spoke about one such programme Dalit Bandhu aimed at upliftment of the Dalits.

Stating that agriculture is one of the neglected sectors, KCR said BRS would highlight the problems of farmers as the main agenda and try to influence the politics of the country to address them.

He claimed that leaders of many parties across the country were coming forward to join hands with him.

He said former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav have assured him that they will attend the historic programme of launching of the BRS.

He recalled that former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda strongly supported the Telangana movement, and his JD-S announced its support to the national party.

The TRS meeting was attended by Deve Gowda’s son and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Tamil Nadu’s VCK party founder-leader Tholkappiyan Thirumavalavan.

KCR revealed that he already had discussions with many economists and experts in various fields and took their advice for the formation of the national party.

KCR’s banners appear in Vijayawada

1

A long flexi hoarding appeared near Kanakadurga Varadhi on the Chennai-Kolkata national highway welcoming Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao renaming his Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS) as Bharat Rastra Samiti became a centre of attraction for the people of Vijayawada.

The hoarding was put up in the name of Bandi Ramesh, who is said to be the general secretary of the TRS. Ramesh is not from Vijayawada, not even from any part of Andhra Pradesh, but got these hoardings fixed overnight.

KCR has good followers in Andhra Pradesh even when he was waging a battle for separate Telangana state before 2014. He made several derogatory remarks against the Andhra people but continued to be admired by a large section of the people.

He is admired here for his plain talk, simple but hard hitting language and not mincing words to hit at the rivals. The language is always appealing as he never hides his enemies nor beats around the bush to hit at his rivals.

He also has admirers in Andhra Pradesh as his ancestors are from Vizianagaram district, which is part of the state. KCR’s great grandfather migrated from Vizianagaram district to Chintamadaka village near Siddipet in Telangana.

He started his political career as Youth Congress leader and thus enjoys good relationships with some Congress leaders. Later, he was part of the TDP and thus had some leaders. KCR is now reaching out to the old friends.

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has reached out to Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav to enquire about the health condition of his father and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Rao’s office stated that the chief minister had telephoned Akhilesh Yadav on Monday.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, 82, who has been undergoing treatment at a Gurugram hospital over the last few days, had been shifted to the intensive care unit on Sunday after his condition deteriorated.

KCR team begins talks with AP leaders

1

As Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has made up his mind to play an active role in the national politics, his team is understood to have contacted some politicians from Andhra Pradesh. It is said that his team members have contacted some of his colleagues in politics who are from Andhra Pradesh.

KCR has a good number of colleagues and followers in Andhra Pradesh, despite his hate speeches against Andhra during the separatist movement. Whenever he visited Andhra Pradesh, even after bifurcation, he was received by huge crowds and was cheered by his supporters from the state.

His first visit to the state after bifurcation was in October 2015 when he was one of the guests for the Amaravati capital city foundation ceremony. Later, he visited Rayalaseema region on a private work and then Vijayawada to worship Goddess Durga.

In every visit, he was received well by his supporters here. Sources say that he is in constant touch with several TDP leaders from Andhra Pradesh. KCR was one of the leaders in the TDP during NTR days and even after Chandrababu Naidu’s tenure. He left the TDP and formed the TRS only in 2001.

Quite interestingly, the TRS fielded its candidates from several Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in 2014 general elections, particularly after the bifurcation was announced and the appointed day was fixed as June 2, 2014.

Now, with big plans on hand, KCR wants his party’s unit to be opened here for which his team is working hard. The team is said to have contacted some young leaders from both the TDP and the ruling YSR Congress too.

The team is also said to be contacting some of the Congress leaders who see no future for them in the party. Sources said that KCR had promised key roles for them if they joined his team. It is to be seen how many leaders from Andhra Pradesh would join KCR in his yet-to-be launched national party.

0

With BJP aiming to dislodge TRS in the next Telangana assembly elections in 2023, KCR has become extremely combative against the Prime Minister and BJP in recent times.

Over the past few months, KCR made flying visits to several opposition-ruled states to discuss ways and means to thwart the BJP in the 2024 parliamentary polls. In this connection, he had met Mamata Banerjee, Nitish Kumar, and Stalin among others. Janata Dal(Secular) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had recently met KCR in Hyderabad.

Telangana announces 30% profit sharing bonus for Singareni employees

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday announced a 30 per cent profit sharing bonus for the employees of state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL).

As a Dussehra gift, the chief minister decided to give a 30 per cent share of the profits of the SCCL for the year 2021-22 to the Singareni employees.

As per the chief minister’s instructions, his Principal Secretary Narsinga Rao issued an order to the Singareni Chairman and Managing Director to pay the special incentive to Singareni workers immediately before Dussehra.

As part of this, Singareni Company will pay Rs 368 crore to the eligible workers.

The profit sharing bonus announced this year is one per cent higher compared to last year. The state government had announced a 29 per cent bonus in 2021.

Last year, the company had allotted over Rs 350 crore for the bonus and each National Coal Wage Agreement (NCWA) employee had received Rs 72,500 as bonus.

Singareni Chairman and Managing Director N. Sridhar had said earlier this month that the company was confident of achieving an annual turnover of Rs 32,000 crore and earning profits to the tune of over Rs 3,000 crore.

He was also confident of achieving the target of producing 70 million tonnes of coal production during 2022-23.

He had appealed to the coal miners and others to work in this direction to achieve the targeted coal production and promised sops and welfare schemes after achieving profits of over Rs 3,000 crore.

During 2021-22, the company had posted a turnover of Rs 26,000 crore, registering 47 per cent growth over the previous year.

The SCCL also supplied 53.6 million tonnes of coal to thermal power stations during 2020-21.

The SCCL is jointly owned by the Government of Telangana and Government of India on a 51:49 equity basis. The Singareni coal reserves stretch across 350 Km of the Pranahita – Godavari Valley of Telangana with proven geological reserves aggregating to a whopping 8791 million tonnes. SCCL is currently operating 20 opencast and 24 underground mines in four districts of Telangana with a manpower of around 43,895, according to the information on the company’s website.

Telangana to enhance tribal quota to 10 per cent

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday announced that reservation for Scheduled Tribes (STs) will be enhanced to 10 per cent from current six per cent in the state without waiting further for the Centre’s approval for a Bill passed by the state legislature seven years ago.

Addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad as part of Telangana National Integration Day celebrations, he announced that a Government Order (GO) to enhance BC quota will be issued within a week.

“We are tired of requesting the Modi government to approve the Bill,” he said slamming the Centre for the delay in giving Presidential assent for the BC reservation Bill.

“What is stopping the Centre from sending the Bill to President for her assent. The President is also a tribal and I am sure she will immediately give her approval,” he said.

He remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has to decide if he will respect the GO or face the consequences.

Lashing out at the BJP leaders, he said they were visiting Telangana for their divisive and cheap politics but doing nothing to get the approval for the BC quota Bill.

KCR also announced implementation of Girijan Bandhu on the lines of Dalit Bandhu with Rs 10 lakh assistance each to tribal families after the settlement of podu lands issue and identificatio of ST families without land or any other livelihood.

He argued that there is no Constitutional hurdle to enhance the quantum of reservation. “The Constitution does not say that the total reservation should not exceed 50 per cent,” he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that Tamil Nadu is providing 69 per cent reservation as the Centre has included it in the 7th schedule of the Constitution. Why is the Centre not extending this to Telangana, he asked.

He said the Centre had done many injustices to Telangana. He alleged that the Centre has gone back on the commitments to set up a tribal university and a steel factory in the state.

Stating that Telangana is marching ahead on the path of development, KCR cautioned people against the divisive forces trying to divide them for their narrow political interests.

He called for implementing the welfare schemes and programmes undertaken in Telangana across the country. He said Telangana should influence the national politics to set things right at the Centre and to ensure that there is people’s and farmers’ rule in the country.

Earlier, a massive rally was taken out by tribals from Necklace Road to NTR Stadium. The rally displayed the rich tribal culture of the state.

KCR earlier inaugurated Kumaram Bheem Adivasi Bhavan Sant Sevalal Banjara Bhavan in Hyderabad.

Communal forces trying to create hatred in Telangana: KCR

1

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday alleged that communal forces who had no role in the integration of Hyderabad State into Indian Union are trying to divide Telangana society by spreading hatred.

Without naming the BJP, he said the disruptive elements were trying to distort Telangana’s history by giving it a communal colour for their narrow political interests.

The Chief Minister was addressing the ‘Telangana National Integration Day’ celebrations organised to mark accession of erstwhile Hyderabad State with the Indian Union.

He said certain divisive forces who had nothing to do with history and developments of the past are trying to pollute the bright history of Telangana and derail its development with petty politics.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, hoisted the tricolour and addressed the gathering at Public Gardens a couple of hours after Union Home Minister Amit Shah unfurled the national flag and reviewed a parade in the city at an event organised by the Union Culture Ministry.

While the Union government organised official celebrations as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’, the Telangana government celebrated the occasion as ‘Telangana National Integration Day’.

Union Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy had invited the Chief Ministers of Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra for the celebrations. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attended the celebrations while Karnataka was represented by its Transport Minister B. Sriramulu. KCR, however, stayed away and no one was present from the state government.

Hyderabad State, which comprised Telangana and parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, acceded to the Indian Union on September 17, 1948 following India’s military operation codenamed ‘Operation Polo’.

KCR voiced concern over the attempts to spew venom and create communal divide in the country and in the peaceful and progressive state of Telangana.

He said that if religious fanaticism grows, it will destroy the very life of the nation and result in deterioration of human relationships. “For their narrow interests, they plant thorns in societal relations. They are spreading hatred among people with their venomous comments. This kind of division between people is in no way justified,” he said

KCR cautioned people against the designs of the communal and divisive forces. He said people of Telangana should remain alert and foil the designs of those who want to create hatred.

Stressing the need for people to remain cautious, he said that Telangana itself is an example to understand how things would take a bad turn if the people are unmindful. “Telangana has lived a cursed life for 58 years due to a mistake that happened in the past,” he said in an obvious reference to the merger of Telangana with then Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. He said that people had to sacrifice lives and languish in jails to achieve a separate state.

Stating that Telangana made all-round progress during the last eight years, KCR said some forces were trying to vitiate the peaceful environment in Telangana and create unrest in the state which is marching ahead on the path of progress and prosperity.

KCR, who earlier paid tributes at Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial, recalled the sacrifices made by freedom fighters of Telangana. He said people unitedly fought against the autocratic rule to usher in democracy.

KCR’s daughter denies receiving ED notice

0

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) legislator K. Kavitha on Friday denied receiving any notice from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Delhi’s liquor policy scam.

Kavitha, who is daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, clarified that she has not received any notice.

She tweeted that the media is being misled by the “malicious propaganda of people sitting in Delhi”. “I request all the media houses to rather utilize your time in showing the truth. To save some precious time of the TV viewers, I would like to clarify that I have not received any notice,” she wrote.

Reports of the ED issuing notice to Kavitha were doing rounds on the day when the ED conducted searches at several places in different parts of the country. Some premises in Hyderabad were also reportedly searched by the ED officials.

Kavitha has already denied allegations of her involvement in the scam. Last month, she filed defamation suit against BJP MP Parvesh Varma and former MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

The city civil court, in an interim order, directed the BJP leadersAnot to make any defamatory statements against Kavitha either on print, electronic and social media or any other medium.

The BJP leaders had alleged that she played a crucial role in a liquor policy scam involving Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Vaghela meets KCR, discuss national politics

0

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela on Friday met Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao here.

Vaghela, also a former Union Minister called on KCR, as Rao is popularly known, at Pragati Bhavan, the official residence of the Chief Minister.

Both the leaders discussed the country’s politics and national issues.

Vaghela recently announced a new political party Praja Shakti Democratic Party ahead of Assembly elections in Gujarat.

The meeting comes amid renewed attempts by KCR to bring together all like-minded parties across the country to forge a front against the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader also plans to float a national political party.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had met KCR on September 11 in Hyderabad.

The Janata Dal-Secular leader and KCR discussed the agenda the national party proposed to be launched by the former.

KCR had told Kumaraswamy that the formation of the national party and formulation of policies will soon take place after continuing discussions with intellectuals, economists, and experts from various fields and reaching a consensus on an alternative national agenda.

Telangana decides to name Secretariat after Ambedkar

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday decided to name the newly-constructed building of the state Secretariat after the chief architect of the Constitution, Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

He issued instructions to Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar to take action in this regard.

The announcement came two days after the Telangana legislature passed a resolution urging the Centre to name the new Parliament building after Ambedkar.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, said it was a matter of pride for people of Telangana that the Secretariat is being named after Ambedkar, who showed guidance to the country, and claimed that the decision will set an example for the entire country.

“It is a proud moment to all Telangana people that the state’s main administration headquarters – the secretariat – is named after India’s social philosopher and great intellectual Dr B.R. Ambedkar. This decision is exemplary for India,” he said.

KCR claimed that the Telangana government is moving forward by adhering to Ambedkar’s philosophy that all the people of India should get equal respect in all fields. The aspiration of Ambedkar are embodied behind achieving Telangana a role model status in the country within a short time in self-governance by promoting all sections of people at high level in the social, political, economic and cultural fields, he said.

He noted that because of incorporation of Article 3 in the Constitution by Dr Ambedkar, Telangana has been formed as separate state. The Telangana government is governing the state with human face for SC, ST, BC, minority, and women communities as well as poor upper caste people by implementing Ambedkar’s constitutional spirit, he added.

“Ambedkar’s dream of India has a unique democratic character of diversity. Ambedkar’s spirit shows that only by implementing the federal spirit, equal rights and opportunities can be provided to all communities. The real Indianness is that the people of India are respected equally without discrimination of caste, creed, gender, and region, and equal opportunities are provided to all. Then only, the real India will be unveiled. Our efforts will continue for that,” KCR said.

He stated that Telangana, which stood as an example for the country in the past, is once again standing as an example for the country by naming the secretariat after Ambedkar.

He observed that the demand to name the new Parliament building after Ambedkar is “not just a small issue”.

“The Telangana Assembly already adopted an unanimous resolution in this regard as it is only a befitting honour to the architect of India’s Constitution. A letter will also be written to Prime Minister of India regarding the same. Considering the Telangana government’s demand to name the Parliament building after BR Ambedkar, I am reiterating the demand to the Union government,” he added.

Peddireddy heckles KCR on power dues

0

AP Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy heckled Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao over the power dues from Andhra Pradesh to the Telangana Discoms. The Telangana chief minister had said that Andhra Pradesh has to pay Rs 17,000 crore to Telangana Discoms and asked the Centre to adjust TS dues to AP and pay the balance.

It may be mentioned that the central government had written to the Telangana state to pay Rs 6,000 crore power dues to Andhra Pradesh in 30 days or else the Centre would act accordingly. The central government cited the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act 2014 and also the representation of the Andhra Pradesh government.

The AP claimed that the TS government has to pay the power charges of Rs 3,000 crore and the interest of another Rs 3000 crore to Andhra Pradesh Discoms. The AP had been representing the case ever since the bifurcation, particularly after the capital was shifted to Amaravati in December 2014, six months after the appointed day, June 2, 2014.

Reacting to the Central government’s letter, the Telangana chief minister blamed the Centre for starting political witch-hunt. He termed the central government’s letter as political vendetta and said that the Telangana government would wage a battle against the centre.

Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy reacted strongly to the statements of the Telangana chief minister and said that there were records on the power dues. The records show who owes who and what amount. He advised the Telangana chief minister to look into the records and accounts and clear the dues to Andhra Pradesh at least now.

It is to be seen how the Central government would react to the fresh statement of the Telangana chief minister on the power dues to Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh owes Rs 17,828 crore power dues to Telangana: KCR

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday claimed that it is Andhra Pradesh which owes Rs 17,828 crore towards electricity dues to Telangana.

On the Centre’s direction to Telangana to pay over Rs 6,000 crore dues to Andhra Pradesh, he demanded the Centre make Andhra Pradesh pay his state the remaining dues.

KCR told the Assembly that the power dues from Telangana were only Rs 3,000 crore but the Centre has asked it to pay another Rs 3,000 crore towards interest. The Centre has also stated that if the dues were not cleared in a month, action would be taken.

He argued that the dues receivable by Telangana distribution companies (discoms) from Andhra Pradesh are over Rs 17,000 crore, and the Centre should ask Andhra Pradesh pay remaining dues after adjusting Rs 6,000 crore dues as claimed by it.

The Chief Minister questioned the silence of the Centre over Telangana’s request to order Andhra Pradesh to pay power dues.

The Power Ministry on August 30 directed the power distribution companies (discoms) of Telangana to pay the dues of Rs 6,757 crore to the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation (APGenco) within 30 days.

Citing the provisions C(2) and (7) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, the Power Ministry stated that there was no dispute regarding the amount to be paid for the power dues – the principal amount of Rs 3,441.78 crore and late payment surcharge of Rs 3,315.14 crore up to July 31, 2022 – to be paid in addition to the principal amount as per the applicable provisions.

Telangana’s Energy Minister G. Jagadish Reddy has already announced that the state will wage a legal battle against the Centre’s direction.

Terming the Centre’s order as “absurd” and “politically motivated”, Jagadish Reddy said this was an act of vengeance against Telangana. He alleged that the Centre was conspiring to create a situation of power cuts in Telangana.

KCR told the Assembly that per capita power consumption in Telangana is 1,250 units against the national average of 957 units. He said power capita consumption in India is less compared to even smaller countries.

He alleged that the BJP government is misleading the country with wrong statistics about power consumption, and that the Centre is working to hand over the electricity sector to big corporates.

KCR also threw the challenge that if the statistics he has given about electricity are proved to be wrong, he would immediately resign.

The Chief Minister said the power situation in Telangana would improve further with the completion of Yadadri power plant.

KCR urges Centre to withdraw power reforms bill before another agitation

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday demanded the Centre to withdraw the Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 before farmers stand up for another agitation.

Speaking in the State Legislative Assembly, he launched a bitter attack on Narendra Modi government for what he called its conspiracy to destroy agriculture in the name of reforms.

He said if the power reforms bill was implemented, motors have to be installed to agriculture pump sets and this would be a death-knell to farmers, who will turn labourers in their own fields.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the power reforms bill. “Modiji, for God’s sake withdraw the power reforms bill. You have the habit of making legislation and withdrawing them. You brought a land acquisition ordinance and then took it back. You brought three anti-farmer laws and later not only withdrew them but also apologised, he said.

“Take back the power reforms bill before any trouble. Before people stand up and launch another agitation, accept our demand with respect,” he added.

He made it clear that Telangana will never accept installation of motors to agriculture pumpsets and would continue 24X7 supply of free electricity to the agriculture sector. He said if power reforms of the Centre are accepted, 39 lakh farmer families in the state will be badly affected.

KCR, who plans to soon launch a national political party, slammed the Modi government for its wrong and undemocratic policies and for toppling non-BJP governments in states.

He alleged that the BJP government was showing arrogance towards other parties and pointed out that it came to power at the Centre with just 36 per cent votes.

He referred to the threats by BJP leaders to create Eknath Shindes in all states ruled by non-BJP parties. He said Tamil Nadu’s state BJP president gave the warning to Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.

KCR said history has seen bigger despots like Hitler, Mussolini and Napoleon. “They all were brought down and became part of history,” he said and remarked that the current government at the Centre has just 18 to 20 months left.

KCR said after selling away airports, ports, railways and all other sectors, the government was now trying to hand over agriculture and electricity to corporates. “These are the two sectors remaining and there is a conspiracy to sell them too in the name of reforms. There has been a steep hike in the prices of fertilizers, seeds, diesel and other inputs. The conspiracy now is to increase the electricity tariff so that farmers will have no option left but to surrender their lands to corporates who are ready to take over them with the blessing of the government,” he said.

Oppn Challenge: Too many state stalwarts who can’t agree on a national leader

1

The churn in the opposition camp in view of the general elections that is to happen in less than two years can throw up several possibilities.

It may be too early to predict whether a phoenix emerges or the churn ends in scattering stars. The question is who will challenge Narendra Modi and does any opposition leader have an alternative to ‘sabka vishwas’ … and the power of Hindutva?

Presently, the opposition is disjointed, with each party in their own realm, weaving their own webs to stay afloat. According to the Election Commission of India, the total number of registered parties is 2,858 — eight national parties, 54 state parties and 2,796 unrecognised parties. (This data dates back to September last year.) From time to time, some of these parties come together to form one or the other front.

The country has seen several coalition governments at the Centre as well as in the states. At the Centre, the experiment began in 1977 with the short-lived Janata Party government headed by Morarji Desai.

Then there was the National Front government, first headed by V.P. Singh, followed by the United Front government, first headed by H.D. Deve Gowda in 1996, followed by the BJP-led coalition headed by A.B. Vajpayee in 1997, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 1999, which was followed by the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Front in 2004 and 2009. In 2014, the NDA under Narendra Modi took over.

Being out of power for 10 years at the Centre and increasingly losing the states as well, the opposition has been finding itself on the backfoot and almost waning in political influence across the country. But will it be able to come together to take on the BJP? That is the million-dollar question.

After the drubbing in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the opposition was at a loss to figure out how to counter the Modi wave, which remained more or less the same even in the 2019 elections. In between, elections in a number of states have been good off and on for the Opposition. Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and now Maharashtra are examples where the opposition lost despite forming governments initially.

The BJP has been far ahead in its political strategies before and after elections. The opposition, most of the time, has been in a state of utter disarray with weak strategies and also lacking the will to take on the might of Modi or the BJP.

For any thriving democracy, it is essential to have a robust opposition that can make the people see through the government’s policies and decisions, and take up issues meaningfully. This may be an ideal situation, but the fact remains that the opposition, most of the time, has failed to rise to occasion. Whether it is inside Parliament or outside, the general feeling is that despite grave issues confronting the government, and the many sticks to beat the government with, the opposition has not been able to do much, except for Modi bashing.

The opposition has several stalwarts and mass leaders who have individual areas of influence. Such as Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, M.K. Stalin in Tamil Nadu, K. Chandrashekar Rao in Telangana, Nitish Kumar in Bihar, the Left in Kerala, the Congress in MP and Chhattisgarh, Naveen Patnaik in Odisha, Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra, and the AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal. Besides them, there are the Gandhis and the other dynasts, such as those of Sharad Pawar, Mulayam Singh, Lalu Prasad, Deve Gowda, the Abdullahs and the Muftis. The list is long. The majority of them tasted power for a long time and now want the pie at the Centre.

Most of these leaders dream of taking up the top job of the country. Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, KCR, Sharad Pawar, and the latest in the list, Arvind Kejriwal, all have made their aspirations known.

The contenders are many, which has perhaps been one of the big hurdles in the way of opposition unity. There is no political party at the national level which can single-handedly take on the Modi-led BJP. The Congress, over the past eight years, has been going downhill, so much so that other parties are shying away from forming alliances with it.

To recover lost ground, the Congress has been betting on its Bharat Jodo Yatra. Rahul Gandhi is aiming to rebuild his party and salvage his image. But more than creating influence, Rahul Gandhi seems to be generating other controversies that threaten to overshadow the Yatra’s intent.

Mamata Banerjee finds herself on shaky ground after ministers and leaders from her party have been caught in scams. As stacks of cash recovered from the premises of the leaders of her party get flashed in the media, her image takes a beating.

KCR and Stalin do not carry the same popularity in the rest of the country as they do in their respective states. Their area of influence outside their states is limited.

That leaves two names — Nitish Kumar and Arvind Kejriwal.

Kejriwal has been gradually increasing his party’s footprint across the country. Slowly, he is trying to take over the space vacated by the Congress. His area of influence across the country is rising.

His party is projecting him as PM material, but he may not be ready for the top job in 2024, as a lot will depend upon AAP’s performance in Gujarat and Himachal Assembly polls. In case, the BJP takes a hit from the AAP, then Kejriwal will prove to be the biggest contender from the entire opposition.

Nitish Kumar’s activism after severing his ties with the BJP in getting the Opposition unified has propelled him to the national stage. Though he has been reluctant to admit that he is a claimant for the top post, his meetings with several other opposition leaders have been enough to make his aspirations public.

It is too early to predict whether the Opposition will get united before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The unity to a large extent depends upon the Congress, which insists on being the centre of the alliance. It has been proving to be a speed-breaker in the unity efforts.

With several opposition leaders trying to make individual efforts towards some sort of unity, the political game has already begun. With less than two more years to go, the country seems to be entering into a poll mode.
