    Actor Dulquer Salmaan, who plays veteran star Gemini Ganesan in upcoming Telugu-Tamil bilingual biopic “Mahanati”, on the legendary southern actress Savitri, says it has been his desire for long to be part of a period film.

    “Amazing period is being captured in films and even in TV series in the West. For long, I have desired to be part of a period drama. Unfortunately, in the Malayalam film industry, we don’t have huge budgets to make such films. ‘Mahanati’ is being made on a massive scale and I’m lucky to be part of this project,” Dulquer told IANS.

    Talking about the project, being directed by Nag Ashwin, Dulquer said he is thrilled to be working with a young team.

    “Both the director and the producer are younger than me. It’s a young team with so much of energy. I have always been against the idea of bilinguals but it made a lot of sense to make this film in two languages,” he said.

    On playing Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan in the film, Dulquer said: “I’m not going to look like him. I can’t, honestly, and I don’t want to wear prosthetic. My approach is simple. I would like to be me in the 1950s if I was a big movie star.”

    “I don’t think I should attempt to play Gemini Ganesan. You don’t really have any off-screen footage of him. You don’t know what kind of person he was off-screen. We only know his persona on screen and I can’t use that to play him off-screen,” he added.

    The film stars Keerthy Suresh as Savitri, apart from Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Mohan Babu and Vijay Devarakonda.

    If the latest grapevine in the industry circles is to be believed, young starlet Shalini Pandey who became an overnight sensation with Tollywood’s latest runaway hit, Arjun Reddy has bagged a plump offer.

    As per the reports, Shalini Pandey has been roped in to play a crucial role in Nag Ashwin’s Mahanati, a biopic which retells about legendary yesteryear actress Savitri. Sources say that the young girl’s impressive performance in Arjun Reddy became a clincher for this offer. The makers of Mahanati approached Shalini who liked the character and jumped on board immediately. However, we have to wait for an official announcement in this regard.

    Mahanati also stars Keerthy Suresh, Samantha , Dulqueer Salman and few others in important roles.

    Can This Senior Producer Convince NTR?

    ‘Mahanati’, a biopic of yesteryear actress Savitri that is being produced by Ashwini Dutt, looks to have become his dream project. He has already roped in an ensemble cast – Samantha, Prakash Raj, Anushka, Dulquer Salman etc. in this film starring Keerthy Suresh in lead role. Dutt however is still yearning for the presence of one actor in the film, and he is NTR Jr.

    There is no need to reiterate that a biopic on Savithri can’t be made omitting the characters of NTR Sr and ANR. The toughest part for the makers is roping in actors who can do justice to the characters of those two legends. Despite the promising star cast ‘Mahanati’ has, the film is still being treated as a heroine-centric film, so the two actors who would play the roles of NTR and ANR can take the film’s reach to next level.

    Dutt is of the opinion that NTR Jr and Naga Chaitanya Akkineni are the best options to play their respective grandfathers on screen. He has approached both the youngsters very long back. Whereas NTR politely refused to act in the film citing he didn’t have the stature to portray his grandfather, Chaitu put forth the condition that he would do the film only if NTR does it.

    Rest of the film excluding the scenes involving NTR and ANR’s characters is being canned currently. Makers have Sharwanand and Nani as reserve options to play NTR and ANR respectively but Dutt is still hopeful of convincing NTR to portray his grandfather by showing him the output thus far. If NTR still stands by his apprehension, Dutt will go with Sharwa and Nani.

    Young filmmaker Nag Ashwin announced a biopic on legendary actor Savitri. Titled as Mahanati, the film stars young actress Keerthy Suresh in the lead role and also features an ensemble cast in the form of Samantha, Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Devarakonda and Prakash Raj in crucial roles. Even before the film’s shoot is half done, the makers have struck a lucrative deal.

    According to the latest buzz in the industry circles, the overseas rights of Mahanati have been bought by Nirvana Cinemas for a whopping 4.5 Crores. This is a huge price for the movie we should say as it is a lady oriented film. Nirvana Cinemas, which has been on success streak with back to back blockbusters with Anando Brahma and Arjun Reddy is making big bet on Mahanati. Let’s wait and watch if their success streak continues with this movie.

    Mahanti is aiming for an early next year release.

    Its raining Biopics in Tollywood. The story of yesteryear actress Savitri is already on sets, and the biopics of freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, Sr NTR and Badminton star Pullela Gopichand are in pre-production stage. Now, a biopic on recently deceased legendary Telugu filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao has been announced.

    Filmmaker O Kalyan has announced to produce the biopic of Dasari. One of the ardent disciples of Dasari and a well-established director will helm this project. The director’s name and other details will be announced in due time.

    Dasari’s life story, the story of how an ordinary man went on to direct 150 films, and also become a Union minister will be interesting to watch on silver screen. But, is making biopics of contemporary legends so easy? Dasari’s biopic won’t look authentic without the characters of NTR, ANR, Chiru, Mohan Babu etc. Who would portray these roles? Makers of ‘Mahanati’ are already moving mountains to find an actor who can play Sr NTR.

    Forget these characters, who would play Dasari on screen? Is there any actor who can look convincing as him and portray his character with utmost honesty and conviction? Hard to imagine any noted actor as Dasari, isn’t? Unpopular faces on the other hand may not help the film at box office.

    Executing the biopic of Dasari is not as easy as making the announcement regarding it. We have to see how Kalyan pulls this off.

    With a senior producer like Ashwini Dutt making ‘Mahanati’, a biopic on legendary actress Savitri, there is an undying curiosity among movie loves over who would essay the characters of NTR and ANR. The name of NTR Jr was vehemently doing rounds to essay his grandfather’s character until the makers have recently denied this speculation.

    Given the good relation between Dutt’s family and NTR Jr, the senior producer has reportedly tried his best to convince the Young Tiger to reprise his grandfather’s role. NTR had acted in the last two production ventures of Dutt’s Vyjayanthi Movies banner – ‘Kantri’ and ‘Shakthi’. Despite this professional as well as personal acquaintance, NTR turned down the crucial cameo in ‘Mahanati’. Movie goers might be wondering, what could have been the reason?

    As per our reliable sources, NTR cited that he neither has the stature nor the maturity to play his legendary grandfather on silver screen. In spite of Dutt’s request, NTR has been adamant about his decision. As Dutt couldn’t find any other actor who can do justice to Sr NTR’s role, he has decided to wait till the very end of filming for the Young Tiger to change his mind.

    Background hunt is on to find a replacement if NTR doesn’t change his mind.

    Actor Junior NTR has not been roped in to play a pivotal role in upcoming multilingual biopic “Mahanati”, a film on the life of late legendary southern actress Savitri.

    “NTR is not part of the project. Whatever you’re reading about him playing a crucial role is nothing but plain rumour,” a source close to the actor told IANS.

    Actress Keerthy Suresh plays Savitri in the film, being directed by Nag Ashwin.

    The film will be made in Tamil and Telugu, and will also feature Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Dulquer Salmaan and Vijay Deverakonda in crucial roles.

    Asked why a biopic on Savitri was being made and not on any other popular actress, Ashwin had told IANS: “There have been countless actresses over the last 80 years in Telugu cinema but none have earned the title of Mahanati. And even today it has solely been reserved for Savitri.”

    The film went on floors earlier this month.

    It will be a magnum opus set in the golden era and will feature extensive art work.

    Actress Keerthy Suresh, who plays legendary actress Savitri in upcoming multilingual biopic “Mahanati”, will have to gain weight to shoot some important portions of the film which went on the floors last week.

    “Keerthy has already started shooting. She is currently shooting the portion where Savitri was a youngster. She is required to gain weight to play Savitri in her prime when she had serious weight issues but was still loved by audiences,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

    Being directed by Nag Ashwin, the film – to be made in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam – also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dulquer Salmaan.

    While Samantha plays a key role, Dulquer will reprise veteran actor Gemini Ganesan, who was married to Savitri.

    “It’ll be a magnum opus period film set in the golden era. With massive set pieces, the film will be unlike anything we’ve explored in Indian cinema,” Ashwin had told IANS.

    Born on January 4, 1936, Savitri made her acting debut in 1950 Telugu-Tamil drama “Samsaram”, and went on to star in several classics such as “Devadasu”, “Missamma”, “Penin Perumai”, “Pasa Malar”, “Bhale Ramudu”, “Thodi Kodallu”, “Mayabazaar” and “Gundamma Katha”.

    Meanwhile, on Saturday, Keerthy made her debut on Instagram.

    Shivam Rao, who wowed audiences and critics alike with his production design in India’s first submarine-based war drama “Ghazi”, has been signed on for upcoming bilingual drama “Mahanati”, a biopic on legendary southern actress Savitri.

    “Shivam is on board. I was mighty impressed by his work in ‘Ghazi’. Our film too will be made on a big scale and it requires extensive art work, especially to recreate long forgotten era and his expertise will come in handy,” the film’s director Nag Ashwin told IANS.

    “It will be a magnum opus period film set in the golden era. With massive set pieces, the film will be unlike anything we’ve explored in Indian cinema,” he said.

    Keerthy Suresh will play yesteryear star Savitri in the film, which also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Dulquer Salmaan and Vijay Deverakonda.

    Talking about the project, Ashwin added: “Most of the pre-production work has been completed. We start rolling from this month-end. Mickey J Meyer has signed to take care of the music.”

    The film will be made in Telugu and Tamil.
