MeToo: Former Miss India lambastes Nawazuddin Siddiqui

0

MeToo tremors are still continuing in India. Latest to join the movement is former Miss India and actres Niharika Singh. She has penned a long post about #MeToo movement in India and written her own experiences in Bollywood. She lamabastes bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, her ex-boyfriend in her post.

She wrote, she first met actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui on the sets of the film, Miss Lovely. She wrote what happened after she met him. She wrote, “One morning, when I was home and he had been shooting all night, Nowaz(Nawazuddin Siddiqui) sent me a text saying he was near my building. I invited him over and asked him to come and have breakfast with me. When I opened the door, he grabbed me. I tried to push him away but he wouldn’t let go. After a little coercion, I finally gave in. I wasn’t sure what to make of this relationship. He told me it was his dream to have a Miss India or an actress wife, just like Paresh Rawal and Manoj Bajpayee. I found his little confession funny but endearing,” she writes. She then added, “In the next couple of months, I began to discover one lie after another. Nowaz had engaged multiple women, giving each one a different story; one of them even called me from his phone and started yelling at me. I also found out about a woman he’d married in Haldwani, whose family had sued him for making dowry demands. I told him to clean up his mess, be honest with himself and everyone around him; also that I did not want to see him again.”

Her long story on social media platform went viral and several women, who are fighting on this issue had supported her. We will have to wait and see how Nawazuddin responds to her allegations. It is known news that he is playing key role in Rajni’s next movie ‘Petta’.

#MeToo movement has been hijacked by some self-interest: Vishal Krishna

0

Tamil film star Vishal Krishna, General Secretary of the South Indian Artistes Association and President of Tamil Film Producers Council, is working relentlessly with his peers to knock down the walls that separate sexual harassment in the different film industries in India.

“Whether it is Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Kannada cinema, the workplace must be made conducive to actress’ safety and comfort. The fear of losing job opportunities must stop. Girls must not succumb to sexual pressures just to get work,” said Vishal.

Women, he said, must feel safe while working in the entertainment industry.

“And I am not just talking about the Tamil industry or the Telugu industry, but all the film industries in India — be it Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bhojpuri… All must unite on the issue of providing safety for women on film sets, and off the sets where there is so much exploitation,” he said.

So would he agree that there is a need to provide protection from sexual explotation?

“Oh yes, there most definitely is. And we’re working towards ensuring it. My new release ‘Sandakozhi 2′ features two major female characters, played by Keerthy Suresh and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. Both were ensured complete safety. When my films are shot, I will ensure the women are well looked after. We need to create the same comfort level for women in cinema across the country.”

Though Vishal is all for the #MeToo movement, he feels the issue is getting tangled with personal agendas.

“#MeToo started off with the best of intentions of exposing sexual predators. But somewhere, the movement has been hijacked by some amount of self interest. We’ve come to a stage when anyone who has an axe to grind, maybe a role that was denied or a project that was promised and never fulfilled, coming forward to take revenge.

“It has come to a stage where I feel I may wake up to hear my name being maligned. This atmosphere of distrust, suspicion and fear must stop.”

While he feels the exploitation must stop, he also feels the stars’ names are being pulled down for personal reasons.

“There is a difference between exploitation and a consensual relationship. I’ve dated a couple of girls from the film industry. It doesn’t mean I’ve exploited them.”

Actor Arjun made unwanted advances, claims Kannada actress Sruthi

0

Kannada actor Sruthi Hariharan on Sunday alleged that she was subjected to “unwanted advances” by south Indian multi-lingual actor Arjun Sarja.

“I was subjected to unwanted overtures by Arjun Sarja on the sets of a film in 2016. I could not raise the issue when the issue took place as there was no internal complaints committee in the film industry,” Sruthi told reporters.

There was a need for an active internal complaints committee in the Kannada film industry, stressed the actress, who was joined by Kannada actor Chetan and film directors Kavitha Lankesh and Roopa Iyer among others, during a media interaction.

The 29-year-old actress addressed media a day after she named 54-year-old Arjun of sexually harassing her through a Facebook post.

“During a (film) rehearsal, we delivered our lines and Mr Arjun hugs me. With no forewarning or permission, he runs his hands intimately up and down my back. He pulls me closer with my body taut against his and asks the director if we could use this idea of foreplay in the scene,” the actress had stated in her post.

The incident which took place before 50 of the film’s crew had left her “aghast”, the actress noted in her post.

Arjun, popularly known as ‘Action King’ who acted in over 150 movies across Tamil, Telugu and Kannada languages, has, however, dismissed the allegations as “false”.

“The allegations being levelled against me are entirely baseless. I am shocked to hear such false allegations,” Arjun earlier told a local news channel responding to the sexual harassment charges.

Speaking up about the sexual harassment faced had led to several of the actor’s fans to intimidate her, the actress said.

“I have been constantly getting calls from Arjun’s fans since I posted my statement on Facebook. I was prepared for the intimidation after making the statement,” she said.

Stating that at least four others were sexually harassed by the actor, Sruthi said, “People who claim to be super stars are taking advantage of their popularity to indulge in sexual harassment on sets.”

Bengaluru-based Sruthi, who has acted in several Kannada and Malayalam films since 2012, said none of her other co-actors had ever made similar physical advances towards her.

Action hero Arjun, first “Me Too” wicket in Kannada Film industry

0

Action hero Arjun, is well known star for Telugu audience. His movies Gentleman Oke Okkadu, Hanuman junction, Sri Manjunatha etc were very big hits in Telugu. Even though he is from Kannada industry, he has fans across South India. Me too movement that started in Bollywood with Tanushree comments on Nana Patekar, now started in Kannada film industry too. Sandalwood actress Sruthi Hariharan has accused her co-star Arjun, one of the biggest stars of South India , of sexual misconduct. She wrote lengthy post in Facebook in which she revealed how Arjun hugged her without permission, ran his hands intimately up and down her back and pulled her closer during rehearsals of a scene. She also told, she was grown up watching Arjun movies and big fan of him but he misbehaving like that left her shocked. She posted as below.

“I was shooting for a bilingual film which starred Arjun Sarja. A man whose movies I have grown up watching. I was excited avout the opportunity. The first few days seemed normal, I played his wife in the film and that day we were to do a romantic scene where we had to hug each other after a brief dialogue. During the rehearsal, we delivered our lines and Mr. Arjun hugs me. With no forewarning or permission, he runs his hands intimately up and down my back. He pulls me closer with my body taut against his and asks the director if we could use this idea of foreplay in the scene. I was aghast. I am all for depicting realism in cinema, but this felt absolutely wrong. His intent seemed anything but professional. I hated that he did it and angry that I didn’t know what to say then. The incident happened in front of at least 50 people on a shooting set- it happened at my workplace. I wanted nothing but to stay away from him rather than be tolerant and put up with his lewd and completeun professional behavior.”

With this, Arjun became first one to be named and shamed in Sandalwood industry as part of ‘Me too ‘ movement. Even other actress made allegations on directors, but she didn’t reveal their names. But Shruthi darely named Arjun. In fact, in South India, he became the first top actor to be named as part of “Me too” movement. Arjun is yet to respond on these comments.

We will have to wait and see how many other top heroes will be named in future.

Delhi court to hear Akbar’s defamation suit on Oct 31

0

A court here on Thursday admitted a criminal defamation suit filed by former Minister M.J. Akbar against journalist Priya Ramani, the first in a long list of female journalists to have accused him of sexual harassment.

After taking cognisance of the defamation suit, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at the Patiala House court listed the matter for October 31 when the statements of the plaintiff and his witnesses would be recorded.

Akbar, through his counsel, told the court that Ramani’s defamatory statements had damaged his image, lowering his esteem in the eyes of the public.

The BJP leader is facing a long string of sexual harassment accusations from women journalists who worked with him at several publications that he edited at various stages of his journalistic career.

Akbar has denied the charges as “false, wild and baseless”.

Akbar, in his plaint, said that it was apparent that the false narrative against him was being circulated in a motivated manner and for the fulfilment of an agenda.

He resigned as Minister of State for External Affairs on Wednesday and said he would fight the legal battle in his personal capacity.

Why Telugu media playing “Passive role” on “Me Too”

0

The #MeToo movement, a global campaign against sexual harassment, is in full swing across the country. The movement picked up in India after Tanushree Dutta spoke about harassment she faced by Nana Patekar. Then it instantly spread to all fields as women from various fields started opening up on the bitter experiences they faced.

Media is no exception, but couple of questions regarding regional media and current generation:

Not only from film industry but complaints poured in from across the industries like TV, Sports, Media. Veteran journalists like M J Akbar, now the Minister in the Central government, has been accused of sexual harassment by several female colleagues. K R Sreenivas, the resident editor of Times of India, faced similar allegations. Multiple women had accused him of sending lewd messages and touching them inappropriately. He resigned to job finally. These are just a couple of incidents that came out. But here are couple of questions –

Current generation: All these incidents that came out – Akbar or KR Sreenivas – they all happened several years back. Does this mean, current generation of journalists didn’t face any such harassment? Or are they still not opening up?

Regional media: Moreover, all the incidents revealed are from the employees of national media. So should we assume the women working in regional media are very much safer and no single incident happened in regional media? Or are they also still not opening up?

Telugu media plays stunningly passive role in this issue:

We are not saying Telugu media is keeping mum on this issue. It is actually reporting “Me too” incidents on film celebrities as well as on media personalities. Of course it is not giving same screen space for incidents related to media people but that is understandable as news on film people get more attention from people. However, the main question is why our media is confining to passive role of just “reporting” the news instead of taking an active role.

Let’s see what it will be like – taking up active role

There was some Jabardast skit in which a dialogue written for generating comedy offended a section of people. Some leading Telugu channel didn’t stop after just reporting the news. It conducted debates over weekend that lasted for around 6 hours. When critic Kathi Mahesh and fans of Pawan Kalyan had some verbal exchanges on social media platforms, the same channels dedicated several hours for several days to debate on the issue ‘deeply’. On some other occasions they took calls from public in live. On some other silly issues they conducted so-called sting operations and aired those ‘secret’ visuals. These are all examples of media taking up “active” role in some issues.

Why Telugu media not taking up active role now?

Recently a lady journalist made allegations on husband of a popular Telugu singer. (https://www.telugu360.com/metoo-woman-journalist-speaks-out-on-harassment-by-a-tollywood-actor/). However, this incident did not get attention of our media. In other incident, another lady reporter made shocking allegations on a big actor that he insisted the journalist to meet in person privately for the interview. For our media, probably this is also not an important news. The media houses that allot hours of debates on silly issues like wife and husband internal problems, didn’t care to take up these kind of issues.

What is our media afraid of?

Does our media lack courage to expose such issues? Or are they intentionally underplaying such incidents. People think, probably below are the reasons for why media not taking up active role in this issues –

Maybe, they don’t want to mess up with Tollywood biggies. Because, once triggered, this movement can go out of hands of those media houses and several bitter facts may come out. Instead media wants to confine their attack on small time actors or Jabardasth actors.

Second, and most important, media may not want to dig and expose the ugly face of their own people. If they start bringing out the stories of “Me Too” in regional media and of current generation, each media house may target the incidents happening in other media house and finally all of them will be shamed When Telugu media was encouraging Sri Reddy, actress Hema questioned Telugu media whether they can say, there is no casting couch in TV and media industry. No media house or no news channel dated to respond.

Overall:

Telugu media is gradually losing respect among Telugu people. Earlier, when Godavari tragedy commission, in its OFFICIAL report, blamed media for the death of 29 people during Pushkaras, no media channel dared to give a story saying it is not their fault. (https://www.telugu360.com/te/godavari-tragedy-commission-blames-media/). Now when “Me too” happening across the industries, no media house daring to cleanse its own industry by exposing predators in their industry. When some reporters, belonging to the same media industry, reported the harassments they faced from biggies of film industry, these media houses keeping mum. Seems our Telugu media is happy with telecasting programs for several days on a snake being worshipped by people, programs on lambasting small time artistes for the silly reasons, and programs on soul of a murdered person talking to his wife.

Hope someday, Telugu media starts playing “active role” on the real issues!!!

Deccan Chronicle women journalists take stand against MJ Akbar

0

As the #MeToo movement gains ground, 20 women journalists who have worked with ‘The Asian Age’ newspaper, came out in support of their colleague Priya Ramani who has accused Union minister MJ Akbar of sexual harassment, said a joint statement issued by them.

The journalists have urged the court to hear their testimonies against Akbar, claiming that some of them suffered sexual harassment by the minister and others have been a witness to it.

Minister MJ Akbar has filed a criminal defamation case against our former colleague Priya Ramani for calling out his predatory behaviour towards the young women he employed at The Asian Age when he was its editor and proprietor.

“This, despite the powerful testimonies of several other women who have stepped forward to speak out against his sexual misconduct. What Mr Akbar has demonstrated through his legal actions is his refusal to introspect, acknowledge or atone for his actions that have caused immense pain and indeed harm to many many women over the years. He himself, in the meanwhile, continues to enjoy enormous power and privilege as minister and Member of Parliament.”

“When Ms Ramani spoke out against him in public, she spoke not only about her personal experience but also lifted the lid on the culture of casual misogyny, entitlement and sexual predation that Mr. Akbar engendered and presided over at The Asian Age.

“Ms Ramani is not alone in her fight. We would request the honourable court hearing the defamation case to also consider testimonies of sexual harassment of some of us at the hands of the petitioner, as also of the other signatories who bore witness to this harassment.”

#MeToo : Woman journalist speaks out on harassment by a Tollywood actor

Over the past week, women journalists from English media have been calling out on sexual harassment like never before, but the silence from women in regional media proves obscenity is far more deep rooted. Nobody wants to discuss the elephant in the room of how the journalists from regional media have to endure lot more.

Why is the #metoo movement confined to English media? Are women journalists of regional media in safe hands? Women shared that they had to wear dupatta when going to meet a politician or a leader. What happens to women in regional media, when they meet up with actors in Tollywood where there have been numerous instances of sexual harassment. While Sri Reddy led the movement of bringing out the deep-rooted cases of harassment in Tollywood, it is not confined to aspiring actors but expanded its wings to journalists. A journalist speaks to Telugu360 on the ordeal she had to endure, because of an actor.

Here is what she wrote to us –

I am writing about an actor who is better known as the husband of a famous Telugu only singer – This was in 2015 when I had approached him for some story that I was working on and in the next two days it was filed, published and I thought I was done with him. But I got a message from him in the middle of the night at 2am one day saying “Hi sup”. I found it really weird but texted him nevertheless the next morning and asked what it was that he needed. He responded saying he was “just thinking” of me ever since he heard “my voice”. From then on I made an effort to keep away from the guy even though he texted often. I stopped changing my profile pictures too because he would text whenever I changed it. He was married by this time and so I once decided to just remind him about it and he replied, “If you can keep a secret, I can keep a secret.”

I stated clearly to him at one point that “I am not interested”, hoping that would make him go away. But almost over 2 months of the insistence, I decided to put an end to this consistent torture because I was feeling guilty that I was probably egging him on to send me all these messages most of which were various proposals to meet. One line was, “I have always fantasized being with a daring journalist like you.”

But I never blocked him and was never even rude to him because I was worried I might need him for a story in the future and he may not talk to me then. It seems silly at this point but I did think that then.

I never responded to him eventually and within 4 months it was over and that was the best way to end it. I eventually did get an occasional “hi I am doing so and so film” as messages from him but even then his name on the phone does make my spine chill because I go back to the times he used words like… “baby”, “babe”, “papa” all paired with some form of invitation to join him at some place.

Conclusion :

This cannot be rubbed off merely as a text message which she could have blocked. The actor’s thought of taking a shot, trying his luck out, despite being married in itself is heinous. It is with great difficult that women enter into this male dominated field and this intrusion into private space is difficult for men to understand. While this incident is just tip of the iceberg, the journalist couldn’t avoid but run into the actor frequently at interviews. When she ran into the harasser, the actor behaved like stranger with no guilt or shame of intruding privacy of journalist.

Hope #MeToo movement in India doesn’t get dissolved: Rakul Preet

0

Actress Rakul Preet is happy with the #MeToo movement gaining momentum in India, but feels it is important to differentiate between sexual harassment and sexual misconduct and deal accordingly.

“A conversation of somebody forcing or somebody raping or somebody saying that ‘you will get the project only if you sleep with me’ and someone misbehaving are two different things. I feel that how we draw a line here and how we figure out what really happened and what didn’t happen, is something that we need to look into,” Rakul told IANS over the phone.

“It shouldn’t happen that the girls who have been really harassed and have been suffering for years… All their issues get dissolved just because there is too much happening,” she added.

The actress is happy that women have a voice “finally thanks to the social media”.

“I hope that something is done. I just hope it doesn’t get dissolved.”

Rakul continued: “I am very happy with the way the movement has gained momentum. These things have existed. I have been very lucky in my life that I haven’t faced it. But then you have heard of stories and I am glad that people are coming out and talking about it because it takes a lot of courage to do that.”

But she hopes that people don’t misuse the movement.

“My only request is to people not to misuse it because finally there is a voice for women and people are listening to them and an action can be taken, workplace can be made into a safer place. They should not misuse it.”

The actress, who is working with Luv Ranjan on his production “De De Pyaar De” with Ajay Devgn, was shocked when accusations against the filmmaker emerged.

Ranjan has been accused by an anonymous actress of making her uncomfortable while giving an audition for his film “Pyaar Ka Punchnama”. She claims Ranjan asked her some personal questions. He denied the sexual misconduct allegations against him, saying he has never misbehaved with a woman.

Talking about it, Rakul said: “It did come as a shock to me. I am not saying anyone is right or wrong here. But I remember the first day when I met him to do this film… I went back home and called my mom and said, ‘They are such amazing people’.

“The moment I saw the accusation, I called him and said ‘Sir, whatever happens, I know you and we all know you’. My experience with him has been amazing. I look up to him as a mentor. He is somebody with whom you can share anything whether it is some personal issue or professional.”

The actress emphasised that she doesn’t think that the actress, who has made the accusation about Ranjan, is lying.

“I don’t know who the anonymous person is. But I can speak for my experience and I have had the most amazing experience with this team.

“That is why if you see all his actors have already spoken. Nobody else has spoken for anybody. The way they have come out in support for him,” said the actress, who has featured in Telugu and Hindi films.

In Bollywood, Rakul has done “Yaariyan” and “Aiyaary”.

Later, many actresses came forward sharing their stories. Top stars like Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar extended their support to the movement. Now women directors of bollywood took a sensational decision and announced that they will not work with proven offenders.

Critically-acclaimed directors like – Konkona Sensharma, Nandita Das, Meghna Gulzar, Gauri Shinde, Kiran Rao, Reema Kagti, Zoya Akhtar , Alankrita Shrivastava, Nitya Mehra, Ruchi Narain and Shonali Bose are the 11 women directors who pledged their support to India’s #MeToo movement and vowed to not work with proven offenders. Explosive : #MeToo in Tollywood

0

The #MeToo movement, a global campaign against sexual harassment and assault on women in various fields, has evoked a widespread support in India when Bollywood actor Tanushree Dutt opened up about the trauma she faced while working with Nana Patekar. This was followed by several allegations from women of various industries.

Now, the juggernaut seems to have struck Tollywood. It is exclusively learnt that the #MeToo movement is going to have a measurable impact in Tollywood as negotiations are being held with film chamber by the women group spearheaded by Suma Kanakala, Jhansi and Nandini Reddy to formulate guidelines and create a safe environment for female artists in the film industry.

In a recent meeting held with all prominent female artists of Tollywood, severe allegations against some of the top actors and directors have been made by some of them. It is said that a consensus has been made not to malign heroes and directors who passed away. The movement has got the support of top actresses like Samantha, Kajal and Anushka.

“Me-too” movement a bad omen for BJP

0

There are several reasons why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is palpably uneasy about the “Me-too” movement against the sexual harassment of women at the workplace, especially when Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar is in the line of fire. As a newspaper has noted, several ministers literally ran away when asked about the allegations against Akbar.

There have also been attempts to downplay the complaints both on the grounds of the delay in lodging them, as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) luminary argued, and as an issue of concern mainly to the urban elite.

One probable explanation for the BJP’s unease is the party’s general unwillingness to be seen as being pushed around.

It doesn’t want to take a decision on, say, the dismissal of the minister as demanded by the Congress and others, including the media, lest it is seen as having been taken under pressure. The party apparently feels that such a step will hurt the party’s macho image.

Another reason for the BJP’s hesitancy in, for instance, asking the minister to cut short his foreign trip is that it is unused to dealing with an issue of private sexual (mis)behaviour. This was the reason why it recused itself from the hearing on the case of gay rights in the Supreme Court, leaving it to the “wisdom of the court” to take a decision on its own.

As at present, there was also similar prolonged silence after the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua till a BJP spokesperson accused the opposition of communalising the incident.

The party is usually at its articulate best when it can lambast the opposition for being anti-national as on the Rafale controversy. Or when it can hold forth on the “termites” identified in the National Register of Citizens dealing with illegal immigrants.

Or when it can side with the women devotees of the Sabarimala temple who are against the Supreme Court’s judgment allowing — in its “wisdom” — the entry of women of all ages into the shrine.

But the “Me-too” movement, with its distinctly modern, feminist ambience, is not quite what a party guided by the patriarchal RSS can easily accept. Besides, as BJP MP Udit Raj has pointed out, the complainants are not all “goddesses” who have to be implicitly believed.

What must be of concern to the BJP is the possibility that if the pro-women movement gains ground, it can lead to other path-breaking initiatives such as criminalising marital rape.

Given the sensitive nature of the movement, the party is unable to dismiss it as “manufactured” dissent as it did in the case of those who returned their awards in protest against the government’s functioning.

The involvement of the middle class — the Lutyens’ clique, as the upper class denizens of Delhi’s privileged living space are derisively called by the saffron brotherhood — is another aspect of the scene which will not be to the BJP’s liking.

Considering that the party’s 2014 success was based on the support which it received from the middle class, among others, any sign of their disenchantment will be a cause of worry to the BJP. It goes without saying that the Congress and other opposition parties will lose no time in taking advantage of the BJP’s discomfiture.

At the same time, it is no secret that the misconduct of uncouth men in influential positions is not a new phenomenon. Like the proverbial casting couch in the film industry, such lewd behaviour has long been prevalent in all offices, including the ivory towers of journalism.

The question is why has it taken so long for the delinquency of the adults to be exposed when it was always known. Why were the media barons silent when they must have known how their star scribes were sexually exploiting young interns? It is only now that a few heads have rolled in newspaper offices.

It has taken the uncommon boldness of a few, starting with Tanushree Dutta’s complaint against Nana Patekar, for the dam to burst. The next step will be to see how the law takes its own course since the sexual peccadilloes of powerful men fall in the category of criminal offences.

There are, of course, a few who are already in the dock, such as a former editor of Tehelka. But will the powers that be show as much eagerness to go after the big fish as they do when chasing the alleged financial misdeamenours of political opponents and critical media houses?

For the BJP, the outing of “dirty” secrets by a number of intrepid women has come at an inopportune time. The party was hoping to ride into the forthcoming electoral battles in the five states this winter on the issues of “termites” eroding the country’s demographic scene and the past misdeeds of the “naamdars” or opposition dynasts.

But, suddenly, a group of bold women has queered the pitch for the party.

Will “Me too” movement catch up in Tollywood too?

“Me too” movement that started in Hollywood one year back created sensation as many top artistes came out and shared their experiences. Recently Tanushree Dutta made allegations on senior actor Nana Patekar and after that many such incidents came out in Bollywood as well as in South India. There is a debate going on among the people whether such movement will start in Tollywood too. In fact that, there have already been incidents where actresses made allegations on Tollywood stars but those incidents were never highlighted by Telugu media and soon their allegations faded out.

Radhika Apte sensational comments on “Top Hero”:

Earlier, Radhika Apte, who acted in Telugu movies, made sensational comments on ‘Top hero’ of Tollywood in an interview without giving his name directly.

She explained about the unpleasant incident she faced in Tollywood – “It was my first day on the sets of a Telugu film. I was lying down, because I was unwell. This male actor walked in. I did not even know him, and he started tickling my feet. I was told he was quite influential.” she added that she snapped him, and after that incident, he didn’t misbehave with her. Even though she did not give the name directly, most of the people could figure out who this box office Bonanza star is. Because, she clearly told it was not superstar Rajinikanth. if we leave out name of Rajnikanth, there is only one star hero she worked with in South India. List of her South Indian films as below:

    Vivek Oberoy (Rakta Charitra)
    Prakash Raj (Dhoni )
    Bala Krishna (Legend, Lion)
    Ajmal Ameer (Tamil film)
    Karthi (Tamil film)
    Fahadh Faasil (Malayal Film)
    Rajni ( Kabali )

Yesteryear actress Kasturi allegations on hero cum politician:

Kasthuri, who has worked in Telugu films like Nippu Ravva, Soggadi Pellam, Annamayya and some other movies also opened up on harassment she faced in Tollywood. She spoke about her horrible experience and told “I would like to point out that most of this was in relation to this one hero – this one guy who is a hero/politician now. I think it was some kind of ego thing for him. I respect him in so many ways, but he couldn’t take no for an answer. He kept harassing me for that one movie I did with him and threw me out of two.” She also did not reveal name of the hero but people could figure out, about whom she is talking. She clearly told he is a politician and she told all this in interview she gave in 2017.

Others:

Recently a lady journalist shared her story with a big star, who has been forcing her to meet personally, but she too didn’t reveal his name. Heroine Aditi Rao also sometime back opened up about her experience. Singer Chinmayi’s courage in opening up against veteran lyricist Vairamuthu is appreciated by many.

Sri Reddy: Difference between “Casting couch” and “Me too”

Another name that strikes while discussing this issue with respect to Tollywood is Sri Reddy. She occupied most of the screen time of many TV channels for a month or so, as she went on making allegations against several Tollywood celebrities. However there is difference between these two issues. The issues raised in Hollywood or Bollywood in the name of “Me too” movement are more related to the sexual harassment women associates facing at workplace or by the fellow associates with whom they are working. In most of these issues, women clearly told that they didn’t succumb to the tactics of the male associates, they rebelled against those male associates and they even complained to others in the industry when they faced these incidents. But in case of casting couch allegations raised by Sri Reddy, she herself openly told that these producers / directors and others have failed to keep up their promises of giving opportunities to her despite she compromised with them.

But still, Sri Reddy is considered torchbearer in this issue in Tollywood. The way she boldly revealed several things stunned many people. However her fight lost all credibility among people as she started targeting people like Pawan Kalyan who are no way related in this issue. People believed this is another political sketch to defame Pawan Kalyan by some leading media houses that colluded with ruling party and Sri Reddy is just a front face behind a bigger conspiracy. At some point, Sri Reddy lost control and used cuss words against Pawan Kalyan and his mother and with that one incident, her entire movement came to an end and TV channels started completely avoiding her.

Finally:

Had Sri Reddy stuck to the core issue and fought against the predators in Tollywood, she would have definitely been approached by many victims and many such incidents would have come out. But the opportunity has been lost as victims in the industry thought her fight is not genuine and is politically motivated and they stopped approaching her. But now again, after Bollywood ‘Me too’, victims in south India just started to open up but it is not very intense. Anyway, it is sure that someday such movement will start in Tollywood too. It is just a matter of time to get some trigger point to re-start “Me too” in Tollywood.

Veteran lyricist Vairamuthu responded on this through Twitter and told that he is innocent and denied the allegations, He tweeted, “Shaming innocent people has become a fashion these days. I have been shamed on several occasions recently. This is one among them. I do not lend an ear to anything that is not true. Time shall reveal the truth.”

Kamal Hassan responded on this row as well as ‘Me too’ movement. He told, “The accused should step out and speak regarding the issue. Others who are not associated with it shouldn’t really comment on this whole controversy. I welcome the #MeToo movement if it happens in an honest manner. I see it as a welcoming change.” He also added, “The movement should stay genuine. People should be aware of the problems faced by women in society. We have seen many such issues since Kannagi days”.
