Review process begins for WHO listing of Covaxin: Bharat Biotech

Bharat Biotech on Monday said that it has submitted all documents to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Emergency Use Listing (EUL) of its Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin and the review process has commenced.

Bharat Biotech Chairman and Managing Director Krishna Ella said all documents required for EUL of Covaxin have been submitted to WHO as of July 9.

“The review process has now commenced with the expectation that we will receive EUL from WHO at the earliest,” he said.

The Hyderabad-based company had said in May that that application for EUL was submitted to WHO-Geneva and regulatory approvals are expected by July-September 2021.

On June 30, the vaccine maker announced that it is working closely with the WHO for inclusion of Covaxin in its EUL.

“Approval from WHO is not expected to be a long-drawn process as the cell line and majority of our facilities have already been audited and approved by WHO for our other vaccines in the past,” it had said.

“We are a step closer to the final decision on Covaxin’s global acceptance, as the rolling data is slated to begin in July 2021,” it added.

The company claims that with 10 scientific publications in 12 months, Covaxin is one of the very few vaccines to have extensive data published in globally-renowned peer-reviewed journals.

Pandemic entering ‘new and dangerous phase’: WHO

The World Health Organization has warned that the Covid-19 pandemic is entering a “new and dangerous” phase. Thursday saw the most cases in a single day reported to the WHO.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the day had seen 150,000 new cases with half of those coming from the Americas and large numbers also from the Middle East and South Asia, the BBC reported.

He said the virus was still spreading fast and the pandemic accelerating.

He acknowledged people might be fed up with self-isolating and countries were eager to open their economies but he said that now was a time for extreme vigilance.

Maria van Kerkhove, technical lead of the WHO’s Covid-19 response, told a press conference the pandemic is “accelerating in many parts of the world”.

“While we have seen countries have some success in suppressing transmission and bringing transition down to a low level, every country must remain ready,” she said.

Mike Ryan, the head of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, said that some countries had managed to flatten the peak of infections without bringing them down to a very low level.

“You can see a situation in some countries where they could get a second peak now, because the disease has not been brought under control,” he said.

“The disease will then go away and reduce to a low level, and they could then get a second wave again in the autumn or later in the year.”

We are terminating relationship with WHO: Trump

While addressing the breifing in the White House Rose Garden, US President Donald Trump said the US will be terminating relationship with the WOrld Health Organisation (WHO) right away.

In his today’s briefing, he also attacked China on several issues like origin of the coronavirus, recent development in Hong Kong, border disputes in the South China Sea and human rights abuses. He also announced measures aimed at punishing China, the BBC reported.

We will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organisation and directing those funds” to other global public health charities, Trump said.

“The world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese government,” he says, adding that China “instigated a global pandemic that has cost over 100,000 American lives”.

China, he said, “pressured the World Health Organisation to mislead the world” about the virus.

“Countless lives have been taken and profound economic hardship has been inflicted all around the globe,” he adds.

Trump’s criticism of the WHO started last month when he threatened to permanently withdraw US funding if the body did not “commit to major substantive improvements in the next 30 days”.

“It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world,” Trump wrote in a letter to the WHO director-general on May 18.

“The only way forward for the World Health Organisation is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China.”

In today’s White House speech, Trump said “China has total control over the World Health Organization”, despite paying the organisation a fraction of what the US does.

China has accused the US of being responsible for the spread of the virus on its own soil, attributing the outbreak to American “politicians who lie”.

No approved treatments yet for COVID-19: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that a number of treatments are under clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19, but none of those were yet approved.

“There are hundreds of clinical trials that are underway, and the reason we need to wait for the results of these studies is because they are evaluating how these medicines, how these drugs work, in terms of either preventing infection, preventing someone from progressing to severe disease, preventing death and how safe they are, do they have any side effects,” Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead for the WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, said on Friday in a press conference in Geneva, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Right now, WHO has launched the ‘Solidarity Trial’ which is a clinical trial focusing on some drugs, some therapeutics, to look at whether or not these are safe and effective for COVID-19. There are more than 2,500 patients enrolled in this multi-site clinical trial,” she said.

“And it will take some time before we have full answers to which treatments work, but right now we don’t have any approved treatments for COVID-19.” she added.

Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, stressed the importance of proper process to ensure safety.

“And there’s a very very well tested process of doing this, so it’s really important that we encourage innovation, we encourage people to be looking for solutions, but then as those solutions potentially become available, we need to put them through the proper process in the interest of safety, in the interest of efficacy and in order to make sure that we first do no harm,” he said.

Lifting lockdown restrictions is not end of epidemic: WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday that lifting lockdown restrictions for COVID-19 is not the end of the epidemic, it’s just the beginning of the next phase.

Speaking at the Group of 20 (G20) Health Ministers virtual meeting from Geneva, the WHO chief said it’s vital in this next phase that countries educate, engage and empower their people to prevent and respond rapidly to any resurgence, Xinhua reported.

“We are encouraged that several G20 countries are now starting to plan how to ease social restrictions. It is critical that these measures are a phased process,” he said.

Tedros told the health ministers that the WHO is deeply concerned that the virus now appears to be gathering pace in countries that lack the capacity of many G20 countries to respond to it.

“Urgent support is needed, not only to support countries to respond to COVID-19, but to ensure other essential health services continue,” he said.

Tedros also took the opportunity to thank Saudi Arabia for its support to the global fight against the virus. Saudi Arabia announced Thursday a $500 million donation to relevant international organizations to support global efforts in combating the COVID-19.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of a simple truth: we are one humanity. We share the same planet. We share the same hopes and dreams. We share the same destiny,” the WHO chief said.
