Big score against SL can help Rohit break 3 WC records

0

India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma has justified his tag as one of the best limited overs batsmen thus far at the ongoing World Cup.

The 32-year-old has scored four centuries in seven innings, and his current tally of 544 runs makes him the highest run-getter in the tournament.

India’s next match against Sri Lanka on Saturday is also their final group game. While India are already through to the semifinals and Sri Lanka are out of contention, Rohit can set his eyes on breaking three major World Cup batting records.

Rohit is currently tied with former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara for most number of centuries in a single edition of the World Cup. The 104 that he scored against Bangladesh in India’s previous match was his fourth of the tournament. If he can get to three figures against Sri Lanka, he will surpass Sangakkara who had slammed four tons in the 2015 World Cup.

Rohit is also currently third on the list of highest run-getters in the group stage of World Cup. However, the two players above him are not too far away — Mathew Hayden had second 580 runs in the group stages of the 2007 World Cup while Sachin Tendulkar had amassed 586 runs in 2003. Rohit is now 42 runs away from surpassing the master blaster.

Rohit also has fair competition in this respect. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan is playing against Pakistan on Friday and the all-rounder is on 542, runs while Australia’s David Warner and Aaron Finch have got 516 and 504 runs, respectively. Australia will play South Africa in the final group game of the tournament on Saturday.

Finally comes the big record of most runs ever scored in a single World Cup. Rohit is currently fifth on this list and is 129 runs away from record holder Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup. If he scores a big century against Sri Lanka on Saturday, Rohit can surpass that record despite playing two matches less than the legendary former batsman.

We have got all bases covered for World Cup: Shastri

0

India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the team has got all bases covered going into the World Cup slated to be held in England and Wales from May 30.

In an interview with Cricketnext, Shastri said India have a flexible team and have players who can play at any position at any given point of time.

“I think we have got all bases covered, really. Last thing you want is passengers on the tour. You want to have in those 15 players — a player who can play anytime, at any given time,” Shastri said in an interview with Cricketnext.

He also said that they have plenty of options for the much-debated number four slot.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had named Vijay Shankar as the number four batsman ahead of Ambati Rayadu because of his “three-dimensional” cricket. However, Shankar has been in the scanner as he was not able to deliver as per expectations in the just concluded edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He scored 244 runs in the 15 matches playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

“I don’t think so because for me we are a flexible team. Its horses for courses, we have got enough ammunition there, enough players who can bat at 4. So, I am not really worried about that,” said Shastri.

During the course of the interview, the India head coach also said that the rapport and respect between M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli is tremendous and both individuals are committed towards a common team goal.

“I was never ever in doubt about the two of them having the kind of respect they have for each other, wanting to do a good job for each other because in the first phase of my job MS was the captain, the next half Virat. And I can see the commitment both have for each other — it’s tremendous,” said Shastri.

He also pointed out that everyone in the team is aware of the achievements of Dhoni and they learn a lot from the former India skipper.

“Everyone knows and they know what he (Dhoni) has achieved in the game, the stature that he has and then to see the poise and to see the humility. You know his sheer presence — the composure he brings when he is out there batting or even during (wicket) keeping is something you have just got to watch and learn and try and emulate it,” he said.

The 56-year-old also maintained that the existence of different personalities in the dressing room allows players to express them freely.

“We don’t want all personalities to be the same in the team and then you know all hell will break loose, but you need that. That kind of a passion from Virat, the calmness from MS and each player is different. Rohit can be different from Shikhar. Kuldeep could be different from someone like Hardik. You would want that,” he said.

India will begin its World Cup campaign against South Africa on June 5.

Squad: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC) Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni (wicket keeper), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Y. Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami.

India World Cup squad: Know your favourite stars

0

As the much-awaited wait gets over with the BCCI selection committee announcing the 15-member India squad for the forthcoming ICC World Cup, slated in England and Wales from May 30. Here is a short profile of players in Virat Kohli’s team, considered favourites for the showpiece event.

Virat Kohli: He will be leading the Indian squad at the World Cup. The premier batsman of the team, however, is having horrid time in the ongoing IPL as his franchise RCB has won just one game of the seven they have played. But fans across the country are hoping that India’s 30-year-old run-machine will fire at the quadrennial event and win the trophy.

Dinesh Karthik: He has been selected as the second wicket-keeper for the World Cup. Karthik, 30, has experience of playing 91 ODIs. He pipped Rishabh Pant who has featured only five times in the 50-over format. MSK Prasad, chief BCCI selector revealed that it was Karthik’s superior wicket-keeping skills that earned him the World Cup spot over Pant.

Vijay Shankar: The 26-year-old batsman from Tamil Nadu has been picked for the fourth slot in the batting order ahead of Ambati Rayadu. His power-hitting ability and the three-dimensional game earned him his first world cup spot.

Bhubaneswar Kumar: The right-arm medium pacer from UP has been India’s leading bowler in the past four years. However, his form in recent times has not been great and he appears to have lost a bit of his bowling spice. His performance in the ongoing IPL has been a mixed bag. But the team management could be hoping that he returns to form the earliest and picks up wickets in the marquee event.

Ravindra Jadeja: The 30-year-old all-rounder from Rajkot has been included in the squad as the third spinner. Jadeja’s skill with both bat and ball, apart from his brilliant fielding, stands him out. His performance in the ongoing IPL has been pretty good and the team management would be hoping that the left-armer takes his amazing form into the world cup.

KL Rahul: KL Rahul has been included in the squad as a backup opener and is likely to get a chance in the playing XI when either of the two openers is not available. The BCCI chief selector has stated that he can bat at any position if the team management needs him. He has been among the runs in the IPL and would be hoping to take that in the world cup whenever he gets a chance.

Kedar Jadhav: He has been a regular in the limited-over setup of India in the last two years. His wicket-taking ability, in addition to power hitting skills, makes him a certainty in the playing XI. He has batted well for the CSK in the IPL and the national team think-tank would be forced to include him if the team wants to play two spinners while resting one of the two wrist spinners.

Yuzvendra Chahal: The 28-year-old has been a regular in the limited-overs setup for India. He is one of the go-to guys for Kohli whenever he needs a wicket. He is having a great run in the IPL with 11 wickets in the 7 games he has played for RCB. His record against South Africa is also good, which makes him a certainty for India’s World Cup opener on June 5.

MS Dhoni: The only man in the squad who doesn’t need any introduction, Dhoni, probably featuring in his last world cup, is an integral part considering his match finishing ability and brilliant keeping skills. His vast experience and ability to make smart decisions in crunch situations makes him the spinal cord of the team.

Jasprit Bumrah: With 85 wickets from just 49 ODI games, the lanky right-arm pacer would be leading the pace battery. His ability to take wickets in any situation makes him an indispensable part of the Indian team.

Hardik Pandya: The all-rounder is a perfect example of a modern-day cricketer. After getting back from a controversy regarding his comments for women on a television chat show, the Mumbai cricketer hasn’t looked behind and has been at his best for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Pandya is the fourth seamer in the squad. Considering his power-hitting skills, he is almost sure to automatically start in the playing XI.

Rohit Sharma: Popularly known as ‘Hitman’, Rohit is regarded as a player of big events. When on song, even the best bowling attack fails to stop him. He along with Shikhar Dhawan would have the responsibility to give a good start to the Indian innings.

Shikhar Dhawan: The only left-handed batsman in the squad forms an impregnable top-order with Rohit. Dhawan has always delivered in England and has the natural ability to pick the line and length of the ball early, which allows him enough time to get into position for any shot. Like Rohit, Dhawan is also known as the player of big events and Kohli would be seriously hoping ‘Gabbar’ to come to the party in England.

Kuldeep Yadav: Kuldeep Yadav alongside Chahal will form the backbone of the Indian spin department. In 44 ODIs, the Kanpur boy has taken 87 wickets. As the wickets in England are expected to be slow, the left-arm chinaman will be another lethal weapon in Kohli’s armoury.

Mohammed Shami: The right-arm pacer has been in tremendous form in recent times. His performance in the Australia series was outstanding. He seems to be at the peak of his fitness and also has been swinging the ball, thus becoming a serious threat for the opposition.
