Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal in women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling at 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast today. She is cousin of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari whose story has been filmed in Ameer Khan’s starrer Dangal movie.
Dangal film is based on Mahavir Singh Phogat, and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari who become India’s first world-class female wrestlers. Mahavir Singh Phogat has a brother Rajpal and Vinesh Phogat, who won Gold today, is daughter of him. It is known news that Vinesh Phogat’s cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari have already won gold in 55kg category in Commonwealth Games earlier.
Actually Phogat sisters are six sisters- Geeta, Babita, Priyanka, Ritu, Vinesh and Sangita and all of them are wrestlers. Dangal movie focused on Geeta and Babita. While Geeta, Babita, Ritu and Sangita are daughters of Mahavir Singh Phogat (whose role is essayed by Ameer Khan), Priyanka and Vinesh were brought up by Mahavir after their father, who is the brother of Mahavir, was killed in a land dispute
