HMDA gears up to avoid Chennai like situation in Hyderabad

Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) seems learning a lesson from the man-made calamity taking a toll due to nature’s fury on Chennai.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) seems learning its lessons following the devastating effect of encroachments of lakes and river margins resulting in how Chennai, the fourth metropolis in the country battling for last few days.
Realising that one of the major reason for Chennai’s present day suffering was due to indiscriminate encroachments in the catchment areas of three rivers that passes through Chennai. In addition to this, several lakes in Chennai that used to store rain water, and the natural courses that takes the water into the three rivers have now occupied and several colonies have come around Chennai subrbs.

It is not a different story in case of Hyderabad too feels the senior officials of the HMDA. After seeing the havoc created in Chennai, now, the HMDA authorities have asked the Lake Protection Authorities to identify and demarcate all the lakes in the city by March 31, 2016.

According to HMDA sources, there were nearly 2,857 lakes in the metropolitan area of Hyderabad, and so far 1,800 have been demarcated by the Lake Protection Wing. However, the local revenue and minor irrigation departments are yet to figure out and demarcate the remaining lakes in the area.
