Actor Nani’s latest offering Majnu, which opened in cinemas last Friday, garnered good talk from the first shows in all areas. The decent openings followed by the positive web reviews hinted that Majnu is on track for another strong box office show. But, the Nani starrer is underperforming. In overseas, Majnu is having a below par run and the break even mark looks impossible by the current trade reports. As of this writing, most of the exhibitors have to recover more than 50%.
Despite good content and sensible performances, Majnu is likely to fall short of the profit zone in many areas. Poor publicity is said to be the major reason for the film’s dismal show at the box office. Nani’s last film, Gentleman, which released earlier this year, performed very well in all areas despite some mixed reports in the initial days. For Gentleman, there were aggressive promotions by the production house and the overseas distributor. The trailers were cut to invoke huge anticipation among the audience. Gentleman received similar reviews like Majnu , but the promotions made a huge difference as the film ended as a profitable venture for all parties involved. In overseas, Gentleman crossed half million mark in just four days and collected closed to $ 900K in its full run. Overseas distributor relentlessly promoted the movie in second and third weeks also. For Majnu, the distribution house did limited publicity. There were no press notes also sent to promote the movie. The distributor has sold most of the areas for a table profit and retained few areas such as California. “When the distributor sold to us for premium prices, it is his fiduciary duty to market the film well. We are not sure if it is their inexperience or lack of interest, there was absolutely no marketing” lamented a exhibitor from mid-west who has been in business for few years.
After a decent start with $ 58K on premiers day, which is less than Gentleman ($ 72K), Majnu collected $ 111K, $ 149K and $ 72K on the next three days taking the total to $390K. With Nani’s recent track record and the good reviews, Majnu is expected to perform better than these figures. But the lack of proper publicity has impacted the collections. With better promotions, Majnu could have collected $ 100K – $ 150 K more.
