YSRCP MP threatens complaint against Chidambaram

1

Following a sarcastic message by Congress leader P. Chidambaram, senior Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and Rajya Sabha member V. Vijayasai Reddy on Saturday threatened to lodge a complaint with the Chairman.

Chidambaram mocked that the Ministry of Labour and Employment allegedly said it had no data on women’s participation in the labour force and called for renaming it.

“Ministry of Labour and Employment tells Parliamentary Committee that it has no data on women’s participation in the labour force. This is an opportune moment to rename the ministry as Ministry of Malemployment,” said Chidambaram.

However, Reddy contended that Parliamentary Committee meetings are confidential till those reports are laid out in the Houses.

“Parliamentary committee meetings are confidential till the report is laid out in the Houses. MPs who adopt cheap politics over following rules harm the objectivity of the report and vitiate the process,” he noted.

The YSRCP leader said he will file a complaint with the House chairman for strict action.

Earlier, Reddy said that the IT Appellate Tribunal has favourably ordered for the expeditious return of Rs 219 crore plus interest to Vizag metropolitan region development authority.

“GST exemption rendered by all services by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and expeditious renewal of its FCRA application to enable NRI pilgrims to donate were the top pointers for discussion with Nimala Sitharaman,” he added, on his meeting with the Union Finance Minister.

Ex-Finance Minister Chidambaram sent to jail

A Delhi court on Thursday sent Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to judicial custody in the CBI case involving INX Media.

Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar sent Chidambaram to 14 days in custody after the former Union minister was produced before in court on Thursday. The court also allowed applications moved by Chidambaram seeking medicines and a western-style toilet in jail along with Z-category security and a separate cell with a cot and a bathroom.

The same were allowed by the court.

Chidambaram has also moved another application in the court seeking permission to surrender in the Enforcement Directorate case relating to INX Media. The court had issued a notice to the financial watchdogs and the hearing on it would take place on September 12.

During the course of hearing, Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal said, “There is nothing found against me. If I am a powerful person and I can influence the witness, they should bring some evidence of at least an attempt of tampering of evidence or influencing of witness.”

“Potential of, likely to, apprehension of, can’t be the reasons for me going to the judicial custody,” he added.

Responding on the submissions, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, said, “Are you arguing on bail?”

Sibal replied, “I am arguing on the grounds you are seeking judicial custody for.”

“It is bascially humiliation. There must be proof that has to be given,” Sibal said.

Mehta replied “So far as the ED case is concerned, Supreme Court has accepted the chance of tampering. There is a strong possibility of tampering with the evidence.”

Jagan cases a reason for refusing bail to Chidambaram?

1

While denying bail to former union minister P. Chidambaram, the Delhi High Court made a special reference to the AP CM Jaganmohan Reddy’s illegal assets cases. Judge Sunil Gaur recalled how the Supreme Court made serious comments before denying bail to Jagan at that time. The Apex Court commented that the top level economic offences with wide ranging consequences should not be taken as ordinary financial offences.

The Supreme Court also commented at that time that Jagan’s assets cases involved active participation of many multi-level conspirators who carried out transactions in multi-farious ways nationally and internationally. Unimaginable amounts of public money would go into the hands of these illegal operators which is harmful to the country’s economy as a whole. It would be advisable not to give bail in such cases of huge, high intensity illegal assets cases.

Justice Gaur stated that if a close look is taken at the Apex Court observations, it would not be correct to give bail in the present case as well. His comments reflected on the Chidambaram case which eventually led to the CBI custody of the former union minister.

“Don’t worry, I am there,” former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told his son Karti when he saw him in the CBI court where he was brought for extension of custody on Thursday in the INX Media alleged bribery case.

The senior Congress leader put his hand on his son’s shoulder with his wife Nalini Chidambaram who was already in the court looking on.

The lawyer couple were present during the arguments that went on for more than three hours before CBI Judge Sunil Rana.

The Judge also permitted the parents to talk to Karti in the presence of the investigating officer during the brief break before passing the order on giving five-day custody of Karti to CBI.

However, the Judge in his order disallowed Karti’s request for home-cooked food but allowed medicines and a health check up.
