Darshakudu’s Result to Impact Sukumar’s Brand?

Sukumar may not have great track record at box office but he is a Brand and considered one of top directors who comes up with novel cinema. His second production venture, this Friday release, ‘Darshakudu’ however doesn’t justify his ‘brand’ and the result may impact the trust of audiences on his banner, ‘Sukumar Writings’ as well as his upcoming film, ‘Rangasthalam’ starring Ram Charan.

Sukumar’s first production venture ‘Kumari 21F’ became a hit at box office, but it must be admitted that he took a big risk with that film. He produced that bold romantic drama while directing NTR’s ‘Nannaku Prematho’. His mark bold story and screenplay, coupled with Hebah Patel’s audacious performance helped the film sail at box office otherwise he would have had to face severe criticism for venturing into production while directing a big budget film.

When Sukumar announced his second production venture’s title as ‘Darshakudu’, audiences believed that it would be another path breaking film from the visionary filmmaker. Sukumar’s involvement in Darshakudu is only as producer. He however promoted the film as his own. With no noted face in the film, if audiences still went to watch this film, its just because of Sukumar’s name.

The weak screenplay and amateurish direction however disappointed the viewers. After this result, audiences may not go to theatres just by watching Sukumar’s name as producer. The talented director may have had confidence in his associate’s story, but he should have at least monitored the film’s progress.

Sukumar is the person to lose the most with the result of Darshakudu. Will this affect his directorial, ‘Rangasthalam’? People may anyway forget this small film since there is five months to the release of the Ram Charan starrer.

Disastrous start for Friday releases, advantage Fidaa

0

This Friday, it was the turn of two low budget films to test their luck at the box office. One is Krishna Vamshi’s Nakshatram and the other is Sukumar’s Darshakudu.

Both these film took off on a poor note at the overseas box office. The premier shows of Nakshatram were cancelled due to various reasons and it will badly impact the collections over the weekend as the film has already received disastrous web reviews.

On the other side, Sukumar’s Darshakudu, too , started off very slowly in overseas. The film managed a meagre $ 4.3k from its premiers. As the film received negative reviews all over, it will hardly make an impact at the box office in its first weekend.

With the latest releases disappointing the audience, it will be advantageous for Fidaa which is inching towards the $ 2 M mark. The film collected $ 1.7 M in overseas till now.

Darshakudu Review – A Crippled script with talentless director

Darshakudu Review , Darshakudu Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating : 1.5/5

Filmmaker Sukumar’s next production Darshakudu is one of the two films releasing today. The film marks the debut of his nephew Ashok as an actor and his close friend Hari Prasad as a director. Hyderabadi gir Eesha Rabba is the leading lady in this romantic drama.

Story:

Darshakudu is the story of a young and aspiring director who places his goal above everything else. Mahesh (Debutante hero Ashok) is extremely passionate about film direction since his childhood and settles as a light boy in Hyderabad. He narrates an excellent story to a producer, who largely agrees to do a film only if Mahesh improvises comeback the love track in the story.

Mahesh who was never in love, thinks that he cannot do justice to the love track in the script unless he experiences that kind of relationship with a girl. The following day, at his native place, he bumps into a girl Namratha ( Eesha Rebba) in a train and slowly attracts her into love relation. He only focuses on how that girl responds to various situations and incorporates it into his script. Realizing his intentions Namratha starts hating him. Rest of the story revolves around how the love hate relationship comes to a closure.

Analysis:

‘Darshakudu’ subject is quite interesting on paper, as it has ample scope to showcase struggles, emotions and some fun. This film needs conviction from its director and faith in his characters. A strong characterization is crucial for this subject, which director of the film ‘Darshakudu ’ totally overlooked. Hero has been showcased as a guy who can be manipulative, who can go to any extent to get a chance as director. Hero has to make a choice between career or love at times. Consistency in his approach would have made this film more honest at least. Mahesh (Aspiring director) has been shown as very manipulative guy, uses even personal moments with his girlfriend into the script. But in the end he is portrayed as if he is aware of the fact that Namratha ( Eesha) is his childhood friend. Towards the end, he twists that all those manipulative scenes as true feelings. This did not go down well. Especially because it contradicts the core point of the aspiring director being ruthless manipulator. This context cannot be justified with his dual intent [ Kala Vs Prema ( Art Vs Love ) ] . That’s where the audience get disconnected with the protagonist.

This film lacks entertainment despite being a filmy based theme. While in second half towards pre-climax, the drama is a bit engaging momentarily, the climax is again a farce. First half of the film is not interesting either. On the whole, even though each half of the story runs only for an hour, it is still boring.

‘Passionate aspiring director’ is a fancy word for wanna be directors in KrishnaNagar of Hyderabad. ‘Darshakudu’ film is a lame attempt to portray one such director’s life until his first directorial film hits the screens.

Performances:

Debutante hero Ashok is just okay. In his role as a director, one cannot complain much about on his short height and pretty average looks. However, a better performer would have elevated the role further. Heroine Eesha Rebba fits the role very well. She had an ease in performing the roles of a lover and costumes designer. Her role demands some complexity. She should portray a girl who is in love with the director simultaneously expressing hatred towards him as she realizes that he is utilizing her to get script ideas. She is convincingly good in that aspect. Hero’s father and heroine’s father roles are played by unknown small-time artists. YouTube star Sudharshan played hero’s sidekick and has done a decent job.

Technicians:

Sai Karthik’s music in this film doesn’t have any noteworthy songs to memorize. Darshakudu theme music provides some consolation. Cinematographer Praveen Anumolu succeeded in giving class and mid-range budget look for this low budget film.

Director Jakka Hari prasad has delivered a very bland movie. Neither the dialogues nor the screenplay are engaging. He depended on only one single point “a director who takes inspirations from his real-life incidents to incorporate them into his script”.

Verdict:

Darshakudu movie offers nothing to common audience. Poor script, amateurish hero and lack of any entertainment mark this film as a total disappointment. This kind of films, even if they are not appealing to the regular audience, should at least show the struggle or pain of cinema industry people in a way that they can try to relate to it. This film fails even in that perspective.
Overall, a pathetic effort by Sukumar Writings.

Small films get a big boost to their openings whenever a notable star promotes them. We have seen many such instances when low budget films got the support from big names in Tollywood. Filmmaker Sukumar is using this formula to a good extent. In the past, we have seen how his debut production ‘Kumari 21F’ drew huge attention before its release due to the good publicity by Sukumar. Now, his upcoming production ‘Darshakudu’ is on the same track.

Few days back, Ram Charan graced the audio launch event of Darshakudu in Hyderabad. The event garnered good attention from media and audience. Now, it is Allu Arjun’s turn to promote the film. Reportedly, Allu Arjun will be the chief guest for the pre release event which will be held in the last week of this month. The healthy and smart promotions by Sukumar will definitely be a huge plus for the film.

‘Darshakudu’ is scheduled to hit the screens on August 4th. The film stars Ashok and Eesha in the lead roles. Jakka Hari Prasad is the producer.

Sukumar’s Endearing Story for NTR

Teaser launch event of filmmaker Sukumar’s second production venture ‘Darshakudu’ was held last evening in Hyderabad. NTR Jr attended as chief guest and launched the film’s teaser. At the event, Sukumar confessed that he was using his good acquaintance with NTR to promote his small film. Later, he narrated a small story to defend why he still was using NTR and won the hearts of everyone.

“Once a Buddhist master and his disciple were travelling. On the way, they came across a woman who asked their help to cross a river. Seeing the hesitation of his disciple to touch the woman, the master helped her cross the river by lifting her in his arms. The question of how his master touched the woman bothered the disciple all along their remaining course of journey. Finally, he dared to ask his master, “being a Buddhist monk, how could you touch the woman?” The master then replied, ‘I have left her very long ago, why are you still carrying her in your mind?,” narrated Sukumar.

Relating the story to their collaborative effort, ‘Nannaku Prematho’, Sukumar said that NTR has left the film after helping it reach the shore but that he was still carrying it in his heart with undiminished love. Sukumar’s affectionate story touched the hearts of everyone including NTR.
