‘Unlawfully detained’ by Hyderabad police, says Renuka Chowdhury

1

Facing flak for grabbing a police personnel by the collar, Congress leader and former Union Minister Renuka Chowdhury on Thursday accused the Hyderabad police of deliberately provoking the situation and harassing her.

“I have been arrested illegally. Unlawful detainment of me as a citizen. I was walking away peacefully to my own vehicle accompanied by the other ladies. We were requested by the police to go back. We went back. My vehicle was coming. I was walking towards it. The media was questioning me. When I was talking to them, the police came and deliberately provoked the situation and deliberately manhandled the women including me and they have arrested me. I demand justice,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Chowdhury sought to justify her action of grabbing a police officer’s collar by claiming she had done it to prevent her from losing her balance and falling down.

The Congress leader had hit the headlines after visuals of her grabbing the collar of a police personnel went viral. The incident took place during a ‘Chalo Raj Bhavan’ protest organised by the Congress in Telangana to protest the alleged harassment of their leader Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate.

The police have charged her under Section 353, or assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, of the Indian Penal Code.

Warrant issued against Renuka Chowdhury in cheating case

0

A court in Telangana on Friday issued a non-bailable warrant against senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Renuka Chowdhury.

The Second Additional First Class Judicial Magistrate’s court in Khammam district issued the warrant as she had not been attending the court proceedings in connection with a four-year-old cheating case against her.

According to the case, the Congress leader allegedly took money from an aspirant for Telangana Assembly elections ticket in 2014 but did not return the money after failing to get him the ticket.

A case of was registered against her in 2015 on a complaint by a woman named B. Kalavathi, who alleged Chowdhury took Rs 1.10 crore from her husband Bhukya Rana Chandra Naik with a promise to get him party ticket to contest from Wyra Assembly seat in Khammam district in the 2014 elections.

The minister failed to arrange the ticket for Naik, who died subsequently. Kalavathi said the former Minister did not return the money.

As the Congress leader was not attending the court proceedings and had even allegedly refused to receive the summons, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against her.

Venkaiah Naidu’s Advice to Renuka Chowdhury on Weight Has Rajya Sabha Laughing Out Loud

0

In a jocular vein, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday asked Congress member Renuka Chowdhury to lose weight and make efforts to increase the weight of her party.

The remarks evoked peals of laughter in the House, which witnessed several light moments during the farewell speeches of retiring members who are about to complete their tenure.

“He (Naidu) knows me from many kilos before. Sir, many people worry about my weight but in this job, you need to throw your weight around,” Chowdhury said in her farewell speech.

To this, Naidu wittily responded, saying “My simple suggestion is, reduce your weight and make efforts to increase the weight of the party”. The reparte led to peals of laughter in the House.

In another such moment, Chowdhury recalled that during her political journey in the Upper House, she was fortunate for being “the entire Opposition’s united candidate to contest against Najma Heptullah for the Deputy Chair here”.

This led Naidu immediately quip: “That would have solved many problems.” Chowdhury said from Shah Bano to Surpanakha, she has been a witness to history in the making in the House.

“The lot of women has not improved tremendously. It is a pathetic 11 percent even now (women’s strength in Rajya Sabha). I really think we need more women,” she said.

Rajni Patil, also of the Congress, said it was destiny that she did not get a full tenure either in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, to which Naidu said, “then you go to Lok Sabha again,” which again evoked laughter across the House.

She also alleged discrimination against women members of Parliament, calling for a change in the mindset and urged the ruling dispensation for early passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Renuka Chowdhury furious over ‘Ramayana’ remark by Modi (on her) in Rajya Sabha!

1

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhury, took her attack to PM Modi this time. She lashed out at the PM after the latter referred her to a character in Ramayana. Quickly rewinding the tape, Renuka Chowdhury laughed in a derogatory manner that seemed as if she was mocking the PM’s speech.
Immediately, Rajya Sabha speaker Venkaiah Naidu intervened and asked MP Renuka Chowdhury to consult a doctor if she is suffering from throat infection. Soon PM Modi resumed his speech and made moot remarks on Renuka Chowdhury. ‘It is the first time I’m hearing such a laugheter after Ramayana’, said the PM. The whole house burst into laughter with Modi’s comments.

As expected, things did not go well with the Congress MP. After the conclusion of the Rajya Sabha proceedings for the day, Renuka Chowdhury spoke to the media. ‘What more can I talk about a person who makes personal remarks? I cannot stoop to a low level by reacting to such remarks. In a way, the PM Modi has humiliated the women in the Nation’, said Renuka Chowdhury, addressing the media representatives outside the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the social media is busy trying to understand whom Modi referred to Renuka Chowdhury; is it Hidimba? Or Surpanaka?
