Guns and knives: What actually happened in Nandyal after bypoll?

0

A day after the Nandyal bypoll, Telugu Desham Party leader Abhiruchi Madhu and YSR Congress Party leader Silpa Chakrapani Reddy engaged in brawl in broad daylight in public. Nandyal on Thursday morning witnessed firing in air, attacks with knife and stone pelting.

As the incident unfolds, Chakrapani followers visited a counsellor’s house after her husband expired. At the same time TDP leader Abhiruchi Madhu reached the place to console the family of the deceased. His car was blocking the way, so Chakrapani’s followers asked him to tow away the vehicle. Some of the YSRCP followers started using cuss words and pelted stones on Madhu’s car. Consequently, TDP leader’s gunman Bhoopal fired five rounds in air. Following the shots, the groups dispersed allowing Madhu to escape from the location.

In a short span of time, upon reaching Suraj Grand hotel, the two groups locked horns again. Madhu with a knife (used to chop coconuts) in his hand, tried to pelt stones and attack Chakrapani. YSRCP followers also revolted and started attacking with stones. A confrontational situation was witnessed at the hotel road. Police who reached the spot, took away the knife from Madhu and helped him leave the place. Police chased away the YSRCP groups and the situation was brought under control

Meanwhile Madhu lodged a complaint in two town police station stating that Chakrapani, Jagadeeshwar Reddy and one other person attempted to kill him by efficiently planning attack on his car. The police registered the complaint.

YSRCP side says that Madhu intentional put his car to block their way. They accused the TDP leader of having several cases registered against him and that he is a rowdy. They alleged that TDP was trying to bring back faction politics in Nandyal again. Later YSRCP leaders also lodged a complaint in the police station.

High alert was announced by the police in Nandyal.

YSR Congress party finally managed to bring Nandyal TDP MLC Silpa Chakrapani Reddy into the party. In a major setback to TDP ahead of the Nandyal by-election, Chakrapani Reddy announced resignation to his MLC post and the ruling party. He cited that he is switching to the YSRCP as he is not being given enough importance in the ruling party.

Chakrapani Reddy faxed his resignation letter to the TDP office. He will be meeting YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy in Hyderabad on Wednesday. He will be joining the opposition party officially tomorrow in Nandyal.

The defection seemed obvious after his brother Silpa Mohan Reddy switched to YSRCP and is now named as the candidate for the Nandyal by-poll.

Chakrapani Reddy, a senior leader from Kurnool, was elected as MLC under local bodies’ quota took oath in May on a TDP ticket.

Silpa Mohan Reddy asks his brother to defect to YSRCP

YSR Congress Party candidate for Nandyal by-poll Silpa Mohan Reddy met his brother TDP MLC Silpa Chakrapani Reddy on Monday.

Mohan Reddy reportedly requested Chakrapani Reddy to switch from the Andhra Pradesh ruling party and join the opposition party. Mohan Reddy said that it is better for both the brothers to be in the same party rather than being in two different parties.

It may be recalled that Mohan Reddy defected from TDP to YSRCP last month after he felt that the ruling party will not let him contest in the Nandyal byelections. He apparently requested his MLC brother to support him in the by-poll.

Chakrapani Reddy instead of outrightly denying his brother’s request allegedly asked time to think and respond.

Mohan Reddy nonetheless is confident that he will win the by-elections with party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s charisma and support from the party cadre.

Silpa Chakrapani Reddy takes oath as MLC

Vijayawada: Senior leader from Kurnool, Silpa Chakrapani Reddy, who won from the local body constituency in Kurnool last month, took oath on Monday. He took the oath in the chamber of Council chairman Dr A Chakrapani. Ministers Kalva Srinivasulu and Prathipati Pulla Rao, besides others congratulated and greeted Chakrapani Reddy on the occasion.

Chakrapani Reddy’s brother Silpa Mohan Reddy was also present when he took the oath. The sources said that Chakrapani Reddy is tipped for the Council chairman post, which is set to fall vacant by the end of this month as incumbent Chakrapani is retiring. It was on this promise that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had tried to build truce between the Silpa and Bhuma families from Kurnool district. The two families are at loggerheads over the successor to the Nandyal Assembly constituency where by-election is to be held shortly following the death of sitting MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy.

The two families are locked in a war now with Minister Bhuma Akhila Priya staking claim for his father’s seat to his family, while the Silpa family staked its claim for the Nandyal seat as Mohan Reddy contested the seat in the 2014 elections and has plans to contest in the next election. The Silpa family is not willing to give up the seat in any case, even on the sympathy grounds as it feels that the Bhuma family was already considered for the Cabinet berth on sympathy grounds.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had held two rounds of talks with the two families and their supporters before he left for US tour and had decided to delay the decision. It was during these talks that the Chief Minister had promised the Council chairman post to Chakrapani Reddy. However, the Silpa family was not ready to give up its claim for the Nandyal seat even if the Council chairman post is given.
As the Chief Minister is scheduled to return to the State in the next week and the Assembly is set for a two-day session later, it is to be seen whether Chakrapani Reddy would get the elevation or not. It is also to be seen how Chandrababu Naidu would resolve the issue of allocating the party ticket for the Nandyal seat working an acceptable compromise for the two families.
