Telangana Liberation Day blows out into political slugfest

2

The Telangana BJP has slammed the ruling TRS government for not observing September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day, the day when Nizam-ruled Hyderabad became a part of India in 1947.

September 17 has become the most contentious issue between the KCR government and the Opposition parties, mainly the BJP. While the BJP commemorated it as ‘Telangana Liberation Day’, the TRS and the Congress observed it ‘Hyderabad Merger Day’. Former BJP Telangana chief K Laxman celebrated the day as Telangana Liberation Day at the party office in Hyderabad by hoisting the national tricolour, IT and MAUD minister K T Rama Rao hoisted the national flag and garlanded the statues of ‘Telugu Talli’ and Telangana ideologue Professor Jayashankar at TRS Bhavan. Meanwhile, TPCC president Uttam Kumar Reddy hoisted the flag at Gandhi Bhavan and claimed that it was due to the efforts of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Hyderabad state’s was merged with India. Union Minister G Kishna Reddy hoisted the tricolour at his residence in New Delhi while accusing the TRS government of being a puppet of AIMIM for not celebrating officially celebrating the Telangana Liberation Day. ” India got its Independence on August 15, 1947. The erstwhile Hyderabad state ruled by the Nizam acceded to the Indian Union only on September 17, 1948. A people’s movement against the Nizam and his Razakar army bore fruit when Sardar Patel launched ‘Operation Polo’ (police action). On September 17, people across Telangana and parts of modern-day Marathwada and Karnataka celebrate a second Independence Day,” Kishan Reddy pointed out.

On its part, the AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi has been opposing any celebrations as they say that Muslims were massacred during the “police action”. Owaisi’s bone of contention is that the country has only one Independence Day. The BJP, on its part, had been demanding the successive governments to declare September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day and officially celebrate it, while the TRS government is completely against it stating that the BJP was indulging in sectarian and divisive politics.

Hyderabad Merger Day celebrated with unfurling national flag

0

Hyderbad Merger Day was marked here on Tuesday with unfurling of the national flag at political party offices and recalling of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters who fought against the Nizam of the erstwhile Hyderabad state.

While the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the opposition Congress and other parties celebrated the occasion as Merger Day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) commemorated it as ‘Telangana Liberation Day’.

It was on this day in 1948 that then princely state of Hyderabad merged with the Indian union following “police action”, as the Indian military operation against Nizam’s army is popularly called.

The celebrations at Telangana Bhavan, the TRS headquarters, were led by party working President and Minister K. T. Rama Rao. He hoisted the national flag and garlanded the statues of ‘Telugu Talli’ and Telangana ideologue Professor Jayashankar.

Ministers Mehmood Ali, Malla Reddy, Srinivas Goud, MPs, state legislators and other leaders participated in the programme.

“Sept 17th: The day Hyderabad was merged with Indian Union – Remembering the countless sacrfices & saluting the martyrs,” Rama Rao later tweeted.

BJP celebrated ‘Telangana Liberation Day’ across the state with its leaders hoisting the national flag. They also took out ‘tiranga ralliesa’ and demanded that the day be celebrated officially.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Prahlad Joshi unfurled the national flag at the BJP state headquarters in Hyderabad.

Union Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy, former Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao, state BJP chief K. Laxman and other leaders attended the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Laxman alleged that the TRS government is not celebrating the day officially under pressure from its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

Laxman claimed that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had promised to celebrate the day officially during the Telangana movement but went back on his word after coming to power.

Kishan Reddy said the TRS government was scared of AIMIM and demanded that the history of Telangana’s liberation be included in text books so that the future generations know about the sacrifices made by their forefathers.

The Central ministers and BJP leaders are scheduled to address a public meeting at Patancheru near Hyderabad later in the day.

Telangana Merger Day was also celebrated at Gandhi Bhavan, the state headquarters of the Congress party. State Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy unfurled the national flag.

He said that Hyderabad merged with India thanks to the efforts of Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He claimed that the Congress and the Communists fought against the Nizam, who wanted to join Pakistan.

The Congress leader said the fight against the Nizam had nothing to do with religion but by linking it with the religion, the BJP was trying to distort history.

The day was also celebrated at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) office. Party leader Ravula Chandrashekhar Reddy hoisted the tricolor at NTR Trust Bhavan.

BJP has been demanding for last two decades that the day should be officially celebrated like in some districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, which were part of Hyderabad State.

Like the previous governments in undivided Andhra Pradesh, the TRS government in Telangana has rejected demands for officially celebrating the day. TRS leaders accused BJP of indulging in “divisive politics”.

Muslim groups have been opposing any celebrations as they say that Muslims were massacred during the “police action”.

AIMIM maintains that there is only one Independence Day for the entire country and hence there is no need for separate celebrations in Telangana.

KCR’s hypocrisy in celebrating Telangana Liberation Day

0

Telangana Language Day was celebrated on 9 September on the occasion birthday of renowned writer, poet of Kaloji Narayana Rao. After formation of Telangana, several such days are celebrated remembering leaders and their contributions from the past.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on several occasions noted that many heroes from Telangana did not get due recognition and that the TRS government is putting all efforts to make ensure that future generations are aware of the great leaders.

But hypocrisy of the TRS supremo is evident from the way they have been avoiding Telangana Liberation Day celebrations. The stalwarts about whom KCR speaks about – Doddi Komaraiah, Chakali Ailamma, Bhaghya Reddy Varma, Kaloji Narayana Rao, Suravaram Pratap Reddy and many more, all of these people fought against the atrocities of Nizam.

There is no point in celebrating these leaders, if the cause for which they fought is not recognised and celebrated. Moreover, KCR is ensuring that the students get only half knowledge which is favourable for TRS to reign over the newly formed state.

While the liberation day is celebrated officially in Maharashtra and Karnataka, even after the bifurcation the TRS government failed to recognize this day, because of vote-bank politics as it might anger AIMIM.

On 17 September, 1948, Indian armed forces officially put an end to the 200-year-old Nizam rule in the present-day Telangana, parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka annexing the Hyderabad state into the Indian Union.

Bharatiya Janata Party has been demanding official celebrations on September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day for the past 18 years. TRS before bifurcation of state wanted the Andhra Pradesh government to celebrate it.
