Story:

Major Ajay Krishna (Mahesh Babu) is a highly regarded as an efficient crisis manager in the Indian Army. Bharathi (Vijaya Shanti) is a Kurnool medical college professor, her son works in army with Ajay. When Bharathi’s son dies in an army operation, as a morale duty, Ajay Krishna goes to Kurnool to support his colleague’s family. State minister Nagendra (Prakash Raj) develops grudge against Bharathi and attempts to kill her family. At the same time Ajay arrives at Kurnool and rest of the movie is a confrontation between Ajay and Nagendra.

Analysis:

Sarileru Neekevvaru is a commercial entertainer which sticks to the box-office fundamentals. Young director Anil Ravipudi, in this 160 minutes film, never pretends to looking for the critical acclaim as such. Right from the word go, he plays it to the galleries as he tries to entertain the audience in one or other way. His emphasis revolves around bringing out Mahesh Babu’s under-utilized skills dance and dialogue delivery. He succeeded for most part at his attempts despite a thin story line.

First half starts off with establishing Vijayasanthi’s story, followed by Mahesh Babu’s entry as Army major. Kashmir episodes are neatly done in original locations, the kids rescue episode came out well. After 25 minutes, story moves to Kurnool but not before another 20 minutes of train episode. The much hyped train episode doesn’t stand up to the hype and it is average. However, Mahesh Babu excelled with his comedy timing in this train episode. Pre-interval and Interval blocks at Kurnool are a feast for masses and fans.

There are plenty of heroism elevation dialogues that will be a hit with the masses. First half ends on good note. In the second half, the first thirty minutes are again very appealing for one and all. The scenes where Mahesh Babu imitates Jaya Prakash, interaction scenes between Mahesh – Prakash Raj are good.

After 30 minutes into second half, movie story goes into unnecessary sub plots. Nallamala forest episode, Crime Branch Koti ( Subbaraju – Vennela Kishore ) thread etc… are just fillers which made the second half a bit lengthy. Movie graph goes down as it approaches the pre–climax. Then comes the penultimate song of the film ‘Mind Block‘– a superb dance number which rejuvenates the mood of the audience. With an unconventional, lighter vein climax the lengthy second half ends.

Songs :

Daang Daang – The party song between Mahesh , Thamanna is Very good. The dance moves are energetic.
He is so cute – The train journey break song is just okay.

Suryudivo Chandrudivo – A pleasant family song.

Mind Block – The Best song of the film and outstanding. Mahesh’s mass dancing skills are a huge surprise.

Sarileru Theme – Audio wise this is best work of DSP in this film, in movie this is a montage song.

Performances: Mahesh Babu, who has been playing soft roles in the last four films, unleashed his other side in this film. Vijayasanthi lives up to her super star status, Rashmika got a pretty ordinary role. Prakash Raj and Ajay played villainy adequately.

Technicians: Devi Sri Prasad stands as a backbone for heroism scenes with his fantastic background score. He also delivered three good songs. R. Rathanavelu’s cinematography is superb. At Kurnool fort set his shot making skills elevated the mood. His skill won’t go unnoticed in the Kashmir scenes as well. Ram Laxman stunts are good as well.

Positives:

  • Mahesh Babu is simply outstanding, he visibly enjoyed his role
  • Out and out commercial direction by Anil Ravipudi
  • Superstar VijayaSanthi ‘s role
  • Songs
  • Interval Block
  • 30 Minutes after the Interval

Negatives:

  • Train episode could have been better
  • Mid portions of the second half are just fillers, adds to length
  • Thin story line

Verdict:

Sarileru Neekevvaru is an engaging commercial entertainer, and Mahesh Babu excelled in it. Director Anil Ravipudi presented Mahesh Babu in a never before mass avatar which will make fans go berserk for sure. First half is good, half way through the second half this movie loses its steam a bit , but the last song and easy climax bring the proceedings back on track. It is a family friendly movie with no vulgarity or violence – just entertainment.
