‘Yatra’ last ditch attempt – release with NTR Biopic

    0

Yatra is a biopic on YS Rajasekhar Reddy, late chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh. Legendary actor Mammootty is playing the lead role and Mahi V Raghav is the director.

Yatra was initially planned for release in December. However, the makers have postponed the film to an indefinite date as there is hardly any buzz in audience and trade circles. Though the project garnered good hype at the starting, the buzz gradually reduced as the story focuses majorly on Rajasekhar Reddy’s padayatra. The teaser received a lukewarm response and didn’t build any buzz on the film. So, the makers are now in search of ways to create some hype for the film.

As a last ditch effort, they are now planning to release the film along with the second part of NTR biopic which is slated to hit the screens in February. They are hoping that releasing with NTR biopic might help grab the attention of audience. Without any selling points and commercial elements, will changing the release date really help the film ? We have to wait and see.

Mammootty’s ego diluting buzz on Yatra

    2

Mammootty’s Yatra, a biopic on former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Rajasekhar Reddy, is slated for release in December. Mahi V Raghav is the director.

When Mammootty signed this prestigious project he put a condition to the producers that there shouldn’t be any other prominent actor in the film. The makers felt Mammootty is a perfect fit for Rajasekhar Reddy’s role and roped him. Director thought he could convince Mammootty and cast a notable face for YS Jagan’s role which was supposed to be a brief appearance.

They considered several options like Suriya, Vijay Devarakonda, Karthi, Vishal etc. But, Mammootty was reluctant to cast these heroes for Jagan’s role. Finally, they wanted to rope in Mammootty’s son Dulqueer Salmaan. But, they couldn’t convince Mammootty and he threatened to walk of the project midway if they cast a known face for Jagan’s role. With no options left, the director had to leave out Jagan’s role in his script as it would be of real impact if they bring an unknown actor for that character.

Without Jagan’s role and the fact that there are no other prominent actors in this much awaited biopic, the hype has slowly fizzled out. The project has now lost sheen and Mammootty’s ego is one of the main reasons for it.

Yatra – Where is the buzz??

Making biopics on politicians is the latest trend in Tollywood. Biopics on former Chief Ministers YS Rajasekhar Reddy and NT Rama Rao are in the offing. While NTR’s biopic is making a lot of buzz among audience and trade circles, YSR’s biopic which is titled as Yatra is carrying very little hype.

Yatra is gearing up for release in December. But, there is no real buzz in audience. NTR biopic is constantly staying in news due to strong promotions. The makers of Yatra have released only a poster and a teaser which received good response. But, there is no other promotional activity by Yatra team which resulted in poor buzz on the film.

As the makers have already announced that Yatra is going to primarily focus on the historical Padayatra taken up by Rajasekhar Reddy, the posters and teaser gave an impression that of a documentary rather than a biopic. So, there is no real excitement on the film.

Mahi V Raghav is the director of Yatra.

Are We Facing a Biopic Overload?

    0

Usually, it is said that the trend of biopics was started by Bollywood. But the south Indian pride Mani Ratnam already started it with his fantastic flick Iruvar which featured the real time lives of two powerful politicians of Tamil Nadu then- MGR and Karunanidhi. Irrespective of its commercial success, the film is a masterpiece. It definitely joins the list of all the greatest films done by him. But after Iruvar, nobody took the daring step to keep this trend going. It was however Mani Ratnam again who made Guru in 2007 based on the life of industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani. After many years of its release, Bollywood started showing interest in making biopics based on popular personalities in the country.Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dirty Picture, Mary Kom, Dhoni, Azhar, Dangal and Neerja fall in this category.

But the credit of showin the taste of biopics in Tollywood goes to Nag Ashwin. He showcased the life of Savitri in such perfection with his attempt in Mahanati this year. He also brought back the confidence that Tollywood will embrace an experimental genre like biopics. After the success of Mahanati, many movies were announced as biopics such as NTR, YSR,Lakshmi Parvati, Chandabrabu, Ghantasala ,Kantha Rao, Sobhan Babu,Pullela Gopichand and many more. However, no news on who exactly is working on this films is yet to be known fully.

Out of these, there are great expectations on NTR and YSR biopics. But the sad part is, other films are almost being in the dark. Except for using the names of popular personalities, there is no big groundwork happening for them. If any of these films fail at the Box Office, it will severely impact other films in this genre. Instead of choosing regional specific Telugu personalities, if Indian level personalities are chosen, there is a better chance of admiration at a national level. When Dangal was dubbed in Telugu , based on a north Indian wrestler Geetha Pholgat, it was admired. The same applies to Bhaag Mikha Bhag and Dhoni as well. It would be wise for Tollywood filmmakers to think on these lines and make a step.

Shocker: No YS Jagan in YSR Biopic

    0

With NTR’s biopic making huge noise all over, the prestigious YSR’s biopic has been silently wrapping up the shooting formalities. Titled Yatra, Malayalam Superstar Mammotty will be seen reprising the role of YSR in the biopic and Yatra focuses on the massive foot march of the veteran politician in 2003 that brought Congress to power in 2004. There have been wide speculations that either Suriya or Karthi will play YS Jagan in Yatra but there has been no official announcement.

Now the latest update is that the makers chopped of YS Jagan’s role completely after they wished not to get deviated and focus completely on YSR. YS Jagan’s role will sure keep up the expectations and the audience may get disappointed if the role is limited. If it is extended, the major plot gets deviated. Hence, Yatra will not have YS Jagan’s role. Directed by Mahi V Raghav, Yatra has been announced for December 21st release.

Mammooty turning a liability for Yatra ?

    0

Stalwart actor Mammooty has stepped into the shoes of late Chief Minister Rajasekhar Reddy for a biopic titled as Yatra. As the story majorly focuses on the Padayatra taken up by Rajasekhar Reddy, the film will showcase very little of his personal life and family.

As the makers want to make this as a memorable biopic, they are looking for prominent faces to cast in the roles of YS Jagan and YS Vijayamma though they have very little screen presence. But, Mammooty is against casting notable actors for these roles. Several actors were proposed by the makers, but Mammooty is unwilling to their choice.

Not to hurt Mammooty, Yatra producers are in a quandary on how to finalize actor for YS Jagan’s role. Popular artist Saranya Mohan was considered for Vijayamma’s role, but due to Mammooty condition an unknown artist who appeared Baahubali has finally been roped.

As the release date is fast approaching, the team is a hurry to wrap up the shooting formalities by completing Jagan’s portion. But, Mammooty seems have turned to be a liability for the casting and his conditions are slightly hurting the producers.

Yatra : Why going back and forth on Jagan’s role

    0

Yatra is touted to be a glorifying biopic on former Telugu Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy. Directed by Mahi V Raghav, the film has stalwart actor Mammootty stepping into the shoes of YSR.

Ever since the biopic has been officially announced, there has been a lot of buzz regarding YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s role. Initially, the makers have locked Tamil star hero Suriya for Jagan’s role. Now, it is speculated that Suriya’s brother Karthi is in talks for the role.

The reason for this indecision is Mammootty as he is reluctant to cast a top star for Jagan’s role. Sources say that he is not in favour to cast a well known face in that character.

The makers are planning to wrap up Mammootty’s scenes first so that they will have more flexibility in choosing Jagan’s character.

If both Suriya and Karthi are out of the race, it is going to be Vishal Reddy who will reprise Jagan’s role. We have to wait for some more time to end the suspense on this role.

‘Yatra’ producer speaks on the road ahead for him and his team

    Nagaraj Goud

Ever since the first look of ‘Yatra’, the biopic of former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, with Malayalam superstar Mammmotty stepping into the shoes of YSR, was released way back in April, the expectations on the film have been visibly high. The latest we hear about the Mahi V Raghav directorial, structured as a road movie, is that it will roll from Wednesday in Hyderabad with a start-to-finish schedule. Speaking exclusively to telugu360.com, one of the producers of the film, Vijay Chilla (the other being Shashi Devireddy), shared what’s in store for him and his team.

He avers that Mammootty, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the late Congress politician, will join the sets at Saradhi Studios, Hyderabad on day one itself. “We’ll be shooting in Saradhi for a few days, post which majority of the portions will be shot in the city outskirts. The idea is to wrap up the whole shoot in 75-80 working days with weekends reserved for off days. The shoot will shift to districts like Mahbubnagar and Warangal in August,” he reveals, admitting that it is difficult to recreate the era of 2003 as the biopic will primarily focus on the grueling near 1500 km padayatra that YSR undertook to understand the day to day struggles of the people. “The teams of VFX and production design have their task cut out,” he smiles.

Last seen in a Telugu film over two decades ago, Mammootty, he says, is required extensively for the drama save for five-seven days. “He feels that this is the right film for his comeback. He is positive and excited about doing a Telugu film. Mahi has shown him the videos of YSR and he has also done his own prep. Mahi has also told him what we are looking at and how we are going to treat the film,” Vijay informs, adding that the Malayalam legend is accommodative and is very receptive to ideas.

Vijay has also got a strong technical team in place for Mahi. “It would be shot by Sathyan Sooran, who shot Karthi-starrer ‘Khakee’, while K, who rendered tunes for our ‘Anando Brahma’, is on board for the music.”

With biopic on NTR, Ram Charan’s next with Boyapati Sreenu and possibly Mahesh’s film with Dil Raju and Aswini Dutt too slotted for Sankranti, one wonders if ‘Yatra’ would make it to the festive date. But Vijay is quick to reiterate that it would, at any cost. “It is not about competition. It’s a date we locked long back. In fact, the day we released the first look poster, we’ve declared that we are coming for Sankranti and there won’t be any change with regards to it. The shoot will be through by September, leaving us good three months for post-production,” he asserts.

On a different note, Vijay is happy with the success of ‘Sammohanam’, which stars his bestie Sudheer Babu with whom he made ‘Bhale Manchi Roju’ earlier. “I’m enjoying his success. It was a flawless performance from his end. I’m really happy for him and Indraganti Mohana Krishna garu,” he shares.
