Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh’s dream capital, is all set to transform into a vibrant Green and Blue City. The Amaravati Development Corporation (ADC) has drawn up grand plans to create a landscape filled with lush green forests, serene canals, and sparkling lakes, taking inspiration from global urban models like Singapore.
As part of this green revolution, nearly 6,974 acres of land have been earmarked for developing parks and planting trees. The focus is on enhancing greenery along major roads, canal banks, lakefronts, and even in residential layouts under the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS). The aim is to ensure every direction you look offers a visual treat of greenery and water bodies.
Greenery in Numbers
The plan includes the development of 497 parks across 1,602 acres within LPS layouts, ranging in size from less than one acre to over 10 acres.
These will be categorized as:
-> 290 parks under 1 acre
-> 147 parks between 1 and 5 acres
-> 42 parks between 5 and 10 acres
-> 18 parks over 10 acres
Seasonal flowering plants will be planted throughout the city, adding color and charm all year round. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has personally directed officials to ensure the capital remains pleasing to the eye in every season.
Tree-Lined Roads with a Purpose
Amaravati will boast 34 main roads, each flanked with eight rows of trees, three on each side of the road, and two along the central median. Pedestrian walkways and cycle tracks will also be built on either side, encouraging sustainable transportation and a healthier lifestyle.
To beautify these roads, 1,420 acres have been allocated along 640 kilometres of the main road network. Within LPS zones, road beautification will cover another 709 acres, spanning 1,244 kilometres. Additionally, 445 acres will be developed along 450 kilometres of central medians, while 494 acres will be used to plant greenery in buffer zones of 22 major roads.
Parks, Reservoirs, and Hillside Greenery
Amaravati’s green lung spaces will include:
-> 190 acres for a public recreation park at Sakhamuru
-> 21 acres at Malkapuram
-> 31 acres for a lung space park at Anantavaram
-> 200 acres for a biodiversity park at Kuragallu
In total, about 611 acres will be used for beautifying canal corridors. Along the Krishna River, a 22-kilometer stretch is being developed as a scenic riverfront zone. Reservoir beautification will cover 71 acres at Krishnayapalem and 158 acres at Neerukonda.
To top it off, 400 acres on the hill slopes of Undavalli, Neerukonda, and Anantavaram will be greened, transforming these elevated regions into natural sanctuaries.As part of water body rejuvenation efforts, about 600 acres of lake areas across villages like Ainavolu, Nelapadu, Nidamarru, Navuluru, Thullur, Velagapudi, Anantavaram, Sakhamuru, and Nekkallu will also be developed.
With over 30% of its land planned for green and blue zones, the city aims to set new benchmarks in urban sustainability and livability. If all goes according to plan, Amaravati will not just be a political capital, it will be a thriving, eco-conscious urban marvel that sets an example for cities across India.
