India’s First Film to Talk about Demonetisation?

0

Ekkadiki Pothaavu ChinnaVada is perhaps the first officially released film in India to incorporate funny lines and references to the burning topic of Demonetisation and Curency Exchange programme unleashed by the Narendra Modi government. What is impressive is not only that lines were infused about the topic but they were added after the film completed Censorship formalities. Look at the speed of execution. The film got a U/A certificate on November 4, the Demonetisation was announced on November 8 and the film got released on November 25. So the writer-director team of VI Anand swung into action to add two or three funny digs at the Old Note Scrap scheme.

In one of the scenes, Nikhil the hero says, ” I have no time. Have to exchange lot of 1000 rupee notes.” In another scene, the sidekick says,” Just check if there are any old 500 rupee notes.” In yet another scene, another comedian says,” Babai, I have to stand in the queue at the branch to draw cash.” One should always appreciate directors who think on their feet to make their films look contemporary and spontaneous.

Not many will have the luxury that makers of Ekkadki Pothaavu Chinnavada have had. Here is a lifetime opportunity to make insinuations on the Demonetisation move which has become the talk of the nation and they latched on to it in time between November 8 and November 23 before the prints have to reach out. Hats off to the team for making a fresh film which has become the season’s biggest blockbuster and for staying relevant to current affairs by referencing about Old Notes scheme. That way, Tollywood has always acted with alacrity and agility when it comes to talking about current affairs in its films.
