Almost all the Tollywood stars are mounting pressure on the producers insisting a pan-Indian release for their films. Irrespective of the genre and content, most of the Telugu films are having a pan-Indian release. The films of Prabhas and Allu Arjun are getting strong openings irrespective of the director and the genre. They are the only pan-Indian stars from the South. None of the recent Telugu films featuring top stars had decent box-office run. After RRR, NTR tested his luck with Devara and the Hindi numbers are disappointing. Nani’s Dasara released in a record number of screens and the producer had to burn his pockets for the loss.
Ram Charan’s Peddi which is a super hit in Telugu failed to make an impact in Hindi. Jio Studios has paid an advance of Rs 25 crores and the producer may have to refund the complete amount considering the run. The distributors in the Hindi market like AA Films, Jio Studios, Karan Johar and Yash Raj Films are not ready to take any risk with the theatrical deals of Telugu films. All the advances are refundable with perfect agreements made. Nikhil’s Karthikeya 2 has been decent in Hindi and Teja Sajja’s Mirai did well in the North. Over the past two years, a number of Telugu films released in Hindi and they came back with zero theatrical share from the North Indian belt.
Our producers are spending ample money on the promotions. The promotions in North are quite expensive and the digital charges, promotional material burden falls on the producer. It’s time to realize that the North Indian audience are not much interested to watch every Telugu film in theatres.
