    0

In response to the news published today about non payment of Service tax for the feature film “Nannaku Prematho”, which was produced in England (London) , I hereby release this press release to present the correct facts.

I have acted in the above film in 2015 which was made in the UK by the producer. I was advised by legal and tax experts that any Service(in this case as an actor) rendered outside India for which payment is received in Foreign Exchange , is not taxable for Service tax in India . Accordingly, I have not collected the service tax from the producer of “Nannaku Prematho”.

In 2016 when C&AG officials conducted a review of my Service Tax returns and raised a query, my legal and economic team gave an explanation in writing about the same. After sending that written reply in 2016, Till date,we have not received any further communication regarding this matter, like a show cause notice or demand, from the authorities.

If and when I receive any communication from the authorities ,I will respond as per the applicable law. I have been a law abiding citizen and faithful Income tax and Service tax payer for the last several years. I have been complying with all the applicable laws scrupulously in time. I have the highest respect for the laws of this great country India.

In the present matter, if it is found by the competent Authority that I have to pay the Service Tax, I will pay every single penny as required of me. I am waiting to hear from the authorities regarding the same.

NTR to get show cause notice on Tax Exemption

Acting on a report tabled by CAG (Comptroller & Auditor General), the national auditor, the Central Revenue department is gearing up to serve show cause notice to NTR Jr on evading tax to the tune of Rs 1.10 crore.

In its report submitted by the Finance Minister in Parliament on Friday, the CAG highlighted the practices adopted by actors and filmmakers to evade service tax obligations. For the films shot abroad, payments to artists for the portions shot abroad were paid through foreign companies and the service was made to look like ‘Export of Services’ with no tax liability.

In the case of NTR, he was paid a remuneration of Rs 7.33 crore by a London-based company in 2015 for ‘Nannaku Prematho’. The actor has been found to have evaded service tax of Rs 1.10 crore on his remuneration citing that his film was shot extensively in London and other foreign nations, and thus his service must be treated as ‘Service export’ with no tax liability.

The CAG also advised the tax authorities to examine the complete loop of transactions among different entities related to ‘Nannaku Prematho’ movie to verify if due service tax has been levied.

Acting on the report, the Central Revenue department authorities plan to serve show cause notice to NTR in this regard.

Sankranti Movies Verdict 2016 – A Statistical Report

    0

The stakes were high and the bets completed. Of the four films to release this Sankranti, there is a unanimous feeling that all the four films were different from each other and belonging to different genres. This is wonderful news for Tollywood that it selected four different varieties of films for releasing this Sankranti which gave a wide variety of choice for the movie-goers.

For those who want conventional masala fare, Balayya’s “Dictator” film has been a good bet for them to see things familiar – item songs, punch dialogues, multiple heroines and bashing of villains. For those who want the flavour of something different and intelligent with the requirement to use your brains, “Nannaku Prematho” serves the perfect fare as the smartest film with the unique avatar of NTR, the confrontationist charisma of Jagapathi Babu and the extra glamour of Rakul Preet Singh. Even though many don’t agree with dumb way in which the villain becomes a pauper in the second half, the movie has cast its spell on the audience and being released a few days before Sankranti gives it an extra edge in collections.

For the youthful audience who are looking for non-stop entertainment and tons of comedy, “Express Raja” is a surprise pack at Sankranti. Excellent production values, power-packed comedy scenes and towering performance by Saptagiri and Prabhas Seenu besides the style of Sharwanand are drawing the audiences in droves. And finally, the real Sankranti festivities and the glamour of village life in all its rich forms are available in only one movie – which is making the rural masses and those who like the quieter pleasures of life flock to  – “Soggade Chinni Nayana”. With a crazy title, attractive dialect, unique Socio-fantasy angle and the power-packed performance of King Nagarjuna, SCN is on its way to be a blockbuster for Sankranti even though it released a day later.

Finally, all four films, by their varied genres and diverse fan bases of the heroes have the potential to rake in the moolah at the box-office. The good news again is that all of them are made on reasonable budgets and should make quicker bucks.

    From an ROI perspective :

Nannaku Prematho” is the costliest of the lot to make money and the extra day of release in the long weekend should hold it in good stead. With a budget of Rs.40 crores, it is already counting upwards of 35.5 Crores in India and USA for 5 days. “Nannaku Prematho” has collected a cumulative share of Rs.28.5 crores share for 5 days in the domestic markets as per Reliance Entertainments representative Shibasish Sarkar, and has collected another 7 Crores Share ( $1.63M Gross = $1.04M Share) in the USA market. It could well end up collecting over Rs.45 crores making it a decent hit. However, to be termed as a hit by all corners, this movie needs to be sustain reasonably in second week too. B,C Centers were seen drop in collections already while A Centers and Overseas are holding up good.

Dictator” is the only white elephant which can make good money in the B and C centers and the areas where Balayya fans feast on his movies like Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. Made at around Rs.27-30 crores, collected 15.1 Crores share in 5 days (including today) in Telugu states and in USA disaster obviously. It has less chance to break even through theatrical rights but with satellite rights it may close to break even for producers. It could still end up collecting as much as the weekend passes as the talk is paisa vasool in B,C Centers.

Note : Dictator share of Karnataka and other non-telugu states is not included, we will update as we know

Soggade Chinni Nayana” is made at a cost of Rs.18-19 crores and may go into profit pool once the collections cross Rs.20 crores. Historically, no Nagarjuna film (except “Manam” which had a different appeal because of ANR) had ever crossed Rs.35 crores. “Soggade Chinni Nayana” in 3 days had collected 10.4 Crores Share in Telugu States,2 Crore share in USA( $533K Gross), 1 crore from Karnataka and other indian states.

From a ROI, Currently sitting at 13.4 Crores share, if SCN crosses Rs.30 crores mark, the film will make 1.57 times return on investment for Producer Nagarjuna.

Express Raja” is likely to make the good ROI. Express Raja has collected 3.97 Crores share in first four days in telugu states, 85 lakhs share in USA ($253K Gross) and Total 4.82 Crores share.Made at an moderate cost of Rs.8 Crores, it is likely to end up collecting around Rs.10 crores share which means an ROI of 1.25 times. Now, that is the power of ROI versus collections mania usually measured in Tollywood.

    India and USA Shares :

    1. Nannaku Prematho 5 days : 35.5 Crores
    2. Soggade Chinni Nayana 3 days : 13.4 Crores
    3. Dictator 5 days : 15.1 Crores
    4. Express Raja 4 days : 4.82 Crores

Note : Dictator share of Karnataka and other non-telugu states is not included, we will update as we know

In summary, the Sankranti promises to be a good money-spinning proposition for distributors as all the four genre films may end up making money for the distributors because of the average-to-above-average talk for all the films. It is only the producer who may have different returns on investment. But at the moment, nobody is complaining this Sankranti and after the good run of “Nenu Sailaja” which ushered in the new year 2016, Tollywood is happy with the crop of Sankranti.

Nannaku Prematho Review : All I.Q but Less E.Q.

    1

    Nannaku Prematho  Movie Review

The most-awaited film of the Sankranti season kicks off the race with a lot of promise and style. Director Sukumar has created a stunning and intelligent  story of what happens when a son  (NTR Jr) takes up the unfinished agenda of a father (Rajendra Prasad) lying on his death-bed who has been duped by a rival businessman (Jagapathi Babu) of his billions of networth and also his sense of identity

    Story:

The story is exactly a leaf out of films like “S/o Satyamurthy” where the son takes on the mantle of living his father’s dreams and values in action. But Sukumar thinks differently. He has the baggage of past experience in teaching mathematics and physics at Intermediate level and has already made some of the most intelligent films in Tollywood where the hero is a rare admixture of Captain Spock (left-brained) and Controlled Emotionalities. Like his previous films “Aarya”, “100% Love”, Sukumar weaves NTR Jr in a never-before role of Abhiram, the scion of a London businessman Ramesh Chandra Prasad (Rajendra Prasad) , who  can read people’s minds, read the next moves of his opponents, pre-empt dangers lurking in the environment, pump-prime the stock prices of his own listed company and even have pre-meditated dates with the girl he desires (Rakul Preet Singh). The story moves with lightening speed once his father Rajendra Prasad’s bitterness and helplessness in taming Kautilya Krishna Murthy (Jagpathi Babu) surfaces as he was about to pop out. NTR swings into action and starts onslaught on the business empire of Kautilya until the cookie crumbles.

    Direction:

In more than 160 minutes, Sukumar takes you into a relentless parade of mind-games and mentalist feats of NTR Jr. with sometimes competing, sometimes winning tactics used against Jagapathi Babu in typical corporate warfare games. The only difference is, Sukumar uses his trademark style of no-frills, poker-face characterisation with concepts borrowed from the world of physics, mathematics and economics like “The Butterfly Effect” (The macrowave theory where a flutter of a butterfly in Kenya can create a tornado in America)   and “Unfulfilled emotions” (The Freudian basis theory which states all emotions which are suppressed actually lead to higher stress which lead to unintended consequences elsewhere). Sukumar embellishes the movie with some breathtaking scenes and stunts which are built upon these theories and sprinkles lot of high IQ stuff linking all emotions to the Butterfly effect, Electra Complex (the female equivalent of Oedipus complex), String theory and so on.

Technically, the film is brilliant and picture-perfect as it straddles the urban landscape of London and Spain with telling effects. It looks like the budget of the film takes off exactly where the last shooting of “1-Nenokkadine” left off in London bridge. But true to the theme of the film which is more about corporate warfare, the stock shots are more on the Canary Wharf zone, the financial district of London where the leading banks are headquartered and in La Banga, Spain. Stunts are few but distinctly different because they use the effect of the Volkswagon Car Engineering marvel Ad to create a ripple effect of polishing off the villains with the drop of a marble ball. The same concept is used in the beginning titles to introduce all the talent that went into the making of this film.

    Lead actors:

Performance-wise, NTR Jr. steals the show right from the first frame to the ending shot where he hugs his father in affectionate cries. Not since the movie “Munna” where Prabhas changed his hairstyle has an actor’s hairdo create such a hysterical fan-followership. With power dressing of immaculately tucked satin shirts, ties and a beard dovetailing with a hairstyle that looks like a hermit, NTR Jr looks every inch like a monk who rides a Ferrari. His million-dollar buck image is matched by exceptional dancing in all the songs with effortless ease and dialogue delivery that stands out with minimalism, for a change. His confrontation scenes with Jagapathi Babu before interval, and in the climax are paisa vasool scenes that make you wolf-whistle. Rakul Preet Singh has a meatier role as Jagapathi Babu’s daughter and also emotes in one of the most touching scenes in the film. Rajendra Prasad has the same composure as always but his scenes should have got extended and much-layered. The Father-Son sentiment is a bit under-loaded and that’s where the film lacks soul in conveying the emotions which justify the title. Jagapathi Babu carries his role as the antagonist stylishly well – it gives a new cinematic high to have a villain who doesn’t bump off people for Telugu audience and this is perhaps his best film in the second innings.

    Music and technical details:

Music by DSP is rocking and the songs are all well-picturised. The background score may lack the usual grace but it is not loud and hence does the job. Sukumar gives us a great film that has all the substance and style in making this a modern epic of intelligence squared between the hero and the villain. In many ways, it is a better film than the half-hearted attempt in “S/o Satyamurthy” (for films of that genre) and also far more comprehensive and clear in output than “1-Nenokkadine” but by making it too straightforward and super-intelligent, Sukumar erred on the side of giving some much-needed relief to the audience in the form of comedy or more emotions. The emotional outburst of the sons including NTR in the ending was too late, too little and the emotional scene between Madhubala and Rakul was evocative but ill-placed with no connection to the characterisation of Jagapathi Babu.

    The Final Word

Sukumar has to tone down on the concepts borrowed from the sciences and mathematics and concentrate on story-telling. But we realise, a director becomes a puppet of his pet dreams and pet peeves  and Sukumar is no different here – he can play himself and not to the gallery. This makes “Naannaku Prematho” a typical Sukumar film but with exceptional clarity and brilliance of performances. It is definitely watchable and a decent film to kickstart the Sankranti season. It is a worthy 25th film to NTR’s catalogue of films but whether it will catch fire in the commercial sense remains to be seen.
