BJP ridicules KCR’ letter to PM on Kalam

0

Telangana state BJP heckled KCR for showing an artificial respect for former president APJ Abdul Kalam. The party pointed out how the TRS government failed to pay tribute to late Kalam in an appropriate way, who drew  international attention to Hyderabad city by heading the defense laboratories in the city.

” The CM did not do anything but release a press note consoling the death upon news agencies flashed the information of sad demise of great former president. He released a press note and declared holiday. this was all CM Chandrasekhar Rao did,” said BJP spokesperson Dr S Prakash Reddy.

How couldn’t a chief minister and his cabinet find time to hold a condolence meeting for the departed leader, he wondered.

” I am happy that the CM remembered that Kalam headed DRDO labs in Hyderabad and it would in the fitness of things to name it after Kalam. His letter would not cover up the lapses in paying tributes by the cabinet,” Reddy said.

KCR for Naming DRDO after Dr Kalam

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao urged centre  that  Hyderabad based DRDO laborataries be named after former president APJ Kalam in recognition to the serviced  he rendered to these laboratories.
In a letter addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Rao said naming DRDO after late scientist would be  fitting tribute Dr Kalam.

Rao recalled that research in DRDO institutions in Hyderabad, where Dr Kalam conducted crucial research, was responsible for India attaining self-sufficiency in defense sector.
Rao said the crucial research for the indigenous development of India’s missile technology took place when Kalam headed the organisation.

Dr APJ Kalam

“The efforts of Kalam went into establishment of Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Mishra Dhatu Nigam and Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad. Under these circumstances, naming Defence Research and Development Organisation after Kalam, who had close connection with Hyderabad, will immensely inspire future generations,” the CM said in the letter. At the same time, Rao said, it would also be defense sector’s tributes to the great scientific visionary.

Reminiscences of President Pranab on Dr Kalam

0

Reminiscences of President Pranab Mukherjee on former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalama as  conveyed to media on board his aircraft en route to Delhi from Bangalore on July 28, 2015

I am deeply saddened by Dr. Kalam’s unexpected demise. He would have completed 84 years in October this year. There is only a four year difference between us. He was born in October 1931 and I was born in December 1935.

My first interaction with Dr. Kalam was when he was Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri. After the Pokhran blasts, Prime Minister Vajpayee invited leaders of the Congress Party for a briefing. I, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and a couple of others were present. The technical aspects of the tests at Pokhran II was explained by Dr. Kalam through an impressive presentation. Vajpayeeji, Ministers and other political leaders analysed it from the political angle.

I congratulated him when he received Bharat Ratna in November 1997 and when his name came up for Presidency. But, we had formal interaction only after 2004. I was Defence Minister in the UPA-I Government when he was President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. He asked me to support the Brahmos missile project. His direct encouragement resulted in the Brahmos being used by all the three services. Initially, it was a surface-to-surface missile. But now we have adapted it and there are surface-to-air, air-to-air, and naval versions. Dr. Kalam and his colleagues developed this indigenous cruise missile of India. Dr. Kalam’s contributions enhanced our defence capabilities.

Dr. Kalam used to often write poetry. Sometimes, while paying respects to departed soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti, he would compose a poem and quietly pass it on to me. I received two/three poems like this.

Our friendship developed because we had a common passion –books. He loved books and lived amongst them. His world revolved around books. Many years ago, I read in college a poem ‘My days among the dead are passed’. Dead here means authors who are no more. I am always surrounded by books. He too was always surrounded by books. Moreover, he was a prolific writer. This passion brought us together. When we met and the few times he came to see me, we would discuss books. What each one was reading or what he was writing. He chided me why do you not write? You read but your production is poor compared to your reading. Why don’t you write?

After my becoming President, he visited me several times and we discussed many things. On his last visit, he presented me his book ‘Beyond 2020’.

I was shocked when I heard the unexpected news of his demise. A sense of tremendous loss overwhelmed me. Dr. Kalam was always jovial but carried his years lightly. His mind was ever agile. He was humble but had a mighty mind. He was the people’s President during his tenure as President and will continue to remain so in the hearts of people after his demise.

No President was ever loved so much. Jawaharlal Nehru received a great deal of love and affection from children and the people. After that, it has been Dr. Kalam. Watching Dr. Kalam enjoy the company of children and students, it seemed as if he was Nehru in another form.

NIMS and Kalam’s happiest moments

0

Dr Kalam was often asked by the children, “What has given you happiness in your life in the last forty years?”

He used to reply that of all the research he undertook, two things gave him immense  joy and bliss.

“One is  KR coronary stent and the other, development of calipers for polio affected children.”

Incidentally both are connected to Hyderabad. Here is the story of light-weight caliper and how the idea originated.

He used to narrate how a complicated research gone into the development of Agni missile helped bring back smiles on the faces of children affected by polio.

Following is his narration of how his team had developed light-weight calipers for polio affected children. Interestingly this is connected to NIMS, Hyderabad.

“Those were the days when the DRDL scientists were struggling to develop a complex material that could withstand a temperature of more than 4500 degrees Celsius in space. We needed a material that could shield the inner components of Agni from the extreme heat or flame Agni emits and keep inner temperature at 25 degrees.  Agni emits a flame while traveling with a speed 15 times that of sound, that  generates a temperature of  4500 degrees.

So, a heat shield was to be developed to protect the inner parts of the craft. Finally, the DRDL scientists succeeded in the development of carbon-carbon material for the heat shield and used it in the tip of Agni.

One day, an orthopedic surgeon, BN Prasad, from NIMS happened to visit my lab. We explained him about the precious material which was not only heat proof but also extremely light. Impressed by the lightness of the material Dr Prasad  asked me to visit his ward then itself. He took me to the NIMS in his car and later to his ward where about 30 patients including children were present. I noticed the children started wearing the calipers upon seeing the doctor. Showing the children, Dr Prasad explained us about the calipers the children wearing hurriedly . They were so heavy, put together two calipers would be weighing around 4 Kgs.

“He asked, ‘What is the benefit in using the precious material in Agni. You please use it for  my children in ward who want lighter calipers.”

“We took it as a challenge. We took dimensions. We made 20 moulds in three weeks.  We produced 15 calipers, called Floor Reaction Orthosis. I went to the hospital along with my Composite team and fitted these calipers to the children.

“Upon wearing these new calipers which were so light, their weight had come down from 4 Kgs to 400 grams, the children felt so happy that they started running.

When I saw their mothers tears rolling down from their eyes with joy.”
