AP High Court shock to Govt on ‘Amul’ infra funds

3

The High Court of Andhra Pradesh has given one more shock to the Jaganmohan Reddy Government with respect to the Amul Dairy company. The HC asked the Government not to spend a single paise of the public funds for the infrastructure to be provided to Amul. No funds should be spent as per the agreement in the MoU signed between the AP Government and the Amul company.

This shocking order was issued after hearing a petition filed by rebel MP Raghurama Raju. Mr. Raju has challenged the validity and constitutionality of the AP MoU with Amul. The AP Government was supposed to file a counter in this respect. As the Government counter was not available, the High Court has proceeded further and urged the National Dairy Development Board to issue a notice to the headquarters of the Amul Dairy Company based in Gujarat.

The AP High Court has given clear and strict instructions to the AP Government’s advocate to make sure that no public funds were spent based on the MoU with Amul.
This is seen as a big setback to the Jagan regime which has pledged to spend over Rs. 6,551 Cr over the next few years to create basic infrastructure necessary for the Amul operations in AP.

Amul creating political tensions in AP villages

2

The Amul Dairy Company has begun buying milk from the dairy farmers in AP villages. Milk procurement is already going on in the Chittoor, Prakasam, Guntur and Kadapa districts. From today, it is buying milk in West Godavari district. The Amul company is rapidly expanding its network all over the State with all out support from the Jaganmohan Reddy Government.

However, the Amul milk procurement has acquired a political colour. The ruling YCP leaders are bringing pressure through their volunteers and local leaders on the dairy farmers to give milk only to Amul. This is triggering political tensions in the villages wherever Amul has started its operations.

For a long time, many dairy cooperatives like Sangam, Vijaya, Visakha, etc have got their strong presence at different places in the State. The respective dairy farmers have also become sentimentally attached to them. Despite many additional benefits, most of the farmers are not willing to shift to Amul overnight.

As such, the YCP leaders and volunteers are forcing the dairy farmers to patronise Amul. They were threatening that the dairy farmers would not get pensions, ration and other such Government benefits if they do not give their milk to Amul. This is creating greater divisions among the villagers along political lines.

Jagan plan to use Amul to beat Heritage, Sangam

3

One of the main missions of Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy is to remove the control of one particular caste on the dairy industry in the coastal region. At the same time, the CM’s singular target is to hurt Heritage that belongs to the Chandrababu Naidu family. As part of this, the Gujarat-based Amul Industry was brought to Andhra Pradesh and it has opened its shops at many places in the State already.
In yet another step towards hurting local dairy farms, the Chief Minister is going to inaugurate procurement of milk by Amul. Once started, this is going to change the overall scene in rural areas. The so-called Sangam, Vijaya Milk and such local dairies are expected to suffer heavily.

The Sangam Dairy has long been operating in Guntur district and other places. It has got loyal suppliers of milk in the rural areas in the coastal belt. They are confident that their customers will not shift to Amul that easily.

Whatever, the milk procurement is also going to become a matter of political interest from now on. There are fears that pressure will be there on the dairy farmers from the volunteers to patronise and supply their milk to Amul.

Also, the CM has given indications already that Amul would pay a greater rate to the farmers than the existing dairy farms.
