MAA TV now part of Star TV

    0

[intro]After much suspense, on 2nd December, 2015, MAA TV has officially become part of the Star TV’s global network. Insights into the MAA’s golden appeal for Star India and what this means for the Telugu viewers.[/intro]

The much-awaited, reported deal of Star TV’s acquisition of MAA TV for Rs.2500 crore (apprx) got smoothly completed without further delay on December 2, 2015. It is one of the game-changing acquisitions by Rupert Murdoch’s team in India led by Uday Shankar of a vernacular channel which comes with four new channels – MAA TV, MAA Movies, MAA Gold and MAA Music and a catalogue of over 1200 top-notch movies of Tollywood.

For Fox’s Star TV network, the buyout of MAA TV gives them access to the most vibrant filmy-entertainment channel in the two states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and gives the fledgling Media empire a leg-up compared to the players like Sony and Disney. Star TV is already a broad-based network with top viewership in sports (Star Sports 1, 2 and 3), Star Plus, National Geographic, Star Movies, LifeIsOK and presence in Kerala (Asianet) and Tamil Nadu (Star Vijay). Now Star owns MAA TV.

The best part of acquiring MAA TV has been the loyal viewership of the film-crazy Telugu audience apart from some of the biggest blockbusters in Telugu from “Baahubali” to “Attarintiki Dared”, from “Pokiri” to “Magadheera”. Rupert Murdoch’s style of hands-off functioning with a clear local flavour has ensured every entity  acquired by it in the last decade turns to dizzy heights. Far from being autocratic and integrative in his approach, Murdoch’s style is to let the operating leaders and the home-grown talent call the shorts and build scale and momentum. It was the same whether it was Star Vijay which drove innovative programming to counter Sun TV’s stranglehold and started capturing the second spot for many years now. In Kerala, Asianet was the number one choice before it came into Star’s fold.

Outside Asia, Murdoch’s style was also to elevate programming with digital quality, enhance viewer’s experience with upgrades of quality and multiple formats of perusal  (Hotstar etc.) and algorithms which make use of the state-of-the-art HD viewing. For example, even before getting acquired by Star TV, watch how MAA TV used to take the digital viewership count for TRPs versus a channel like Zee Telugu (which still uses alphanumeric signals which pop up on the screen like XoCAK12897X and so on) versus ETV (which is still using non-HDTV definition).

In many ways, the thinking of a progressive and professional set up led by industrialist N Prasad, Megastar Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and C Ramakrishna have ensured MAA TV’s ascent was more than linear and assumed geometric proportions by 2014 when the PAT jumped from Rs.85 crores to over Rs.130 crores which is a staggering achievement. Star TV now wants to take the PAT to Rs.200 crores in the coming years.

Right from strategic bidding for blockbusters (Bahubali, Magadheera, Attarintiki Daaredi) and niche films (Anand, Athadu, Andale Rakshasi), MAA TV redefined entertainment for the TV-crazy audience who were not content with just old classics dished out by ETV and Tamil serials dubbed by Gemini TV for years. MAA TV took some innovative steps in highlighting NGOs who are doing path-breaking work, dubbed some iconic serials like “Hara Hara Mahadeva” and “Chinnari Pelli Koothuru” to create buzz alongwith that epic series of “Meelo Evaru Koteswarudu” (KBC series). Even in marquee events, MAA TV brought in the best of blockbuster events and celebrity get-to-gethers much before the current craze of most vernacular channels to cover events which pull in eyeballs without sloppy breaking news headlines.

All this sounds like a dream a decade back when MAA TV was floundering with a promoter like Muralkrishnama Raju until the team of professionals led by Nagarjuna and Nimmagadda Prasad roped in Chiranjeevi and infused order and professionalism into the way things are done at MAA TV. From nowhere, the channel jumped to the top ten channels in the country in terms of standards set in Financial Reporting, a task accomplished by the professionalism of the senior management team. The question of closing accounts in time and giving healthier profits was a distant nightmare for most Telugu channels who are either driven by opacity of funds utilisation or non-interest in fair and transparent disclosures, especially rivals like ETV and Gemini TV. MAA TV changed all of that and created a value that is today a jewel in the crown of the Star TV empire – the same empire that owns such brands such as the National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, Star Movies and Star Sports. Hope the Telugu audience will be treated for a bigger entertainment hereafter now that a local channel like MAA is part of Star Network.

    0

Director Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali- The Beginning’ is the most talked about film not only India but also in World. Apart from many screens in Inida, this visual extravagance is getting screened in many international film festivals and getting the applause from international audience. The film is also slated to release soon in China and Japan.

With all this international buzz going around the first part of two part series, Rajamouli is alleged to be delaying the second part, ‘Baahubali – The Conclusion’.

Rajamouli has returned to Hyderabad only on Tuesday after a long foreign tour attending international film festivals where Baahubali was screened to packed houses.

Though 40 percent of the shooting has been wrapped, the director has to film a major part of Baahubali 2 and should concentrate on visual effects as they are planning it more bigger than the first part. If sources close to the project are to be believed, the filmmakers are planning to release the second part by the end of 2016.

Produced by Arka Media, Baahubali features Rana Dhaggubati, Anushka, Tamannaha and Ramya Krishna in key roles. MM Keeravani composed the music as Senthil Kumar handled the camera for this period epic. The film has already minted over Rs 600 crores.

Will Rudramadevi reach the heights of Baahubali?

    0

Gunasekhar’s upcoming prestigious project Rudramadevi is the talk of the industry for quite some time. As ‘Baahubali – The Beginning ’ was the last period film which was released massively and was critically acclaimed worldwide. It has broke and created a number of records in the India film industry. With Rudramadevi coming in the same lines, industry bigwigs, trade analysts and common audience are all started comparing the film to Rajamouli’s magnum opus project.

Like Baahubali, Rudramadevi too is getting released in other languages including Hindi,Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. This epic film too has huge star cast in the form of Anushka, Rana, Allu Arjun and Krishnam Raju among others. The film’s trailers and posters have all increased the curiosity among film lovers and the film is all set for a massive release on October 09. In almost all aspects right from technical aspects to business, the film will definitely be gauged in par with Baahubali.

However, director Gunasekhar who is also producing the film is confident of his product and has pinned high hopes on it.

The film’s soundtrack and background score were composed by maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Rudramadevi based on the life of Rudrama Devi one of the prominent rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty will also be released in 3D. Though the pre-release business is good, we have to wait for another few days to know the fate of the film.

    Audience going beyond template entertainment

    0

With the success of Baahubali, and Srimanthudu and not so recent Malli Malli Idhi Rani Roju, the audience are thronging theatres to watch sensible cinema. Few people in the industry even commented that the above films are a hit even without a Brahmanandam in it. Are the film makers responsible for not dishing out strong content oriented cinema? Are they scared that the audience might reject anything that doesn’t have fun? A few film makers give their perspective to Telugu360.com about cinema post Srimanthudu.

Ask Chandoo Mondeti who made his debut with Karthikeya, how he risked doing something offbeat at a time when people were going to the theatres for the same kind of formula comedy. He says, “If cinema is good, people will watch it 100 percent. Quality in cinema, be it story or 24 Crafts, has definitely begun. Karthikeya is a safe bet, I thought if I make a run of the mill story, I would be thrown out. I was sure that even though the film might not be a commercial success, people will definitely appreciate it. You should tell the story you want it to be. In Karthikeya there is a dialogue in the beginning that takes place in the mortuary…suspense ki comedy thodu avuthe, film is a hit. Look at Rajkumar Hirani – whatever the genre is he says it with entertainment-be it God or Gandhigiri.

People will not remember regular cinema, they might enjoy it nevertheless. Flop or hit, no one can predict but the amount you spend if controlled, you can be safe. Without Brahmanandam, Baahubali and Srimanthudi have become blockbusters, that is what industry people and media is saying. But if Brahmannadam is present, there will be buyers but with the success of these two films, the story has taken a different turn. Brahmanandam ni pettukunte story work out avvali, otherwise it is a disaster. There should be a capable director who should control him. Never blame the audience, not necessary to depend on a comedian, instead depend on a story.”

There were films like Pandaga Chesuko that didn’t get good reviews but all the buyers were safe. That is one kind of entertainment we are unable to judge. Masala had better content and it was a multi starrer, but it was a complete wash out, there was no audience for the matinee show. Venkatadri Express director Merlapaka Gandhi comments, “Content is important, people will enjoy anything, be it Ready or Dhee. New films are coming. Kanche trailer adiripoyindi, it is a new genre. Entertainment is not about Brahmanandam or Vennela Kishore, it is characterisations. In Srimanthudu, there was no fun but there was content. Audience will enjoy even if you recycle an old story. The artistes are not important, how you portray their characters matter. My film with Sharwanand will be different, it is a road movie with all ingredients, different screenplay. I should like the story first, I want some magic even before the audience likes it. Venkatadri Express was on train. Because I don’t want the story to stop, it should be moving. Something is happening aney feel untadhi. I like stories that move, there will be fun in the screenplay. Almost 75 percent of the film is done.”

Damodar Prasad says never talk about audience, they are receptive to anything, we do the same crap always. He adds, “One film runs and we follow the same formula. Let us not blame the audience by talking about formula and Brahmanandam. Maro Charitra was ahead of time, so was Julie, didn’t we see it? Business and safety is a different ball game. You make a blue film, it will run but that is not business. It was a different phase when all the films starring Brahmanandam worked. Brahmanandam is a maha natudu in working out comedy but athanu untene cinema nadusthundi is wrong. For an earlier film, they said it was MS Narayana who contributed to the success. How long can you make the same films, no wonder Aagadu and Kick failed. People are fed up. You want to make a realistic film or film with fantasy. Which format do you want? If there is a new concept, people will definitely watch. Writers too will change with the audience, they will shift the style of writing and content. Kotthaga alochistaru, kotthaga raastharu.”

He further states, “I want to be in the business and make money but what do you do, which route do you take? Shorter one or the longer one? No one is wrong, but it is just a matter of perspective and choice. Some people don’t want to experiment and they take the safest route. Everything has a plus and minus. When I did Anthakamundu, everyone said it is a bold step but I went ahead. People say 101 things, but what is that the film maker ultimately wants? Every generation audience has been receptive, it is we who are looking for safety as it is a high stake business. When it comes to quality, we are still down compared to the Hindi film industry.”

Rajamouli gives his piece of mind

    0

S.S.Rajamouli reacted strongly on twitter after a lot of fans of Rebel Star Prabhas asked for a record number of 50 days centers run for Baahubali. Rajamouli took to Twitter and said, “Record number of 50 days, 100 days,175 days are things of past. Today, Films are being released in 1000′s of screens and run is over by 3-4 weeks. Few main screens might still give shares, but mostly the run is over. It is very sad when some fans ask for an extension, sometimes paying out of their pockets and sometimes asking the exhibitors to do so. Friends..! what do we gain out of these false records?? Audience have given us a memorable victory, that we will remember for the rest of our lives. What more do we need? Our industry is plagued by this issue for a long time. Let’s not be a part of it. It is high time we stopped this. Bahubali will run in theatres that are yielding shares. If not, it will make way for other new films to follow. We will NOT block theatres for false records..” Way to go S.S.Rajamouli.

Tabaillon is well known for his work in “The Incredible Hulk”, “Clash of the Titans”, “Taken 2” and most recently, “Now You See Me”. Originally from France, Tabaillon began his career editing popular French feature films, notably for Luc Besson’scompany EuropaCorp.

His career took off with his collaboration with director Louis Leterrier on the films Transporter 2 and The Incredible Hulk, followed by Now You See Me. Bahubali is a Team Effort: Cinematographer Senthil

Senthil is a marvellous technician. The low profile cinematographer had been with Rajamouli for most of his movies and helped the latter in transforming his craft to a visual wonder. Baahubali is Senthil’s crowning glory and throughout the conversation, the man stresses that it is a team effort and that speaks volumes about his humility. The contribution of a cinematographer from the pre production to the wrapping up of the film is monumental. Senthil draws a deep breath as he says it isn’t over yet and he needs to finish Bahubali II before thinking of a Bollywood debut.

It has been a 3 year journey, how does it feel?

We are awaiting the release tomorrow. We have done our part and now the people have to give their verdict. I never expected this type of hype though we knew we were making a big budget movie. This rush for the tickets is something I have never seen. The expectations are so much that I have begun feeling a bit sceptical if we will be able to reach it or not. I am tensed. The second part will be more challenging. The first will become the bench mark but the biggest challenge will be to exceed the first part.

You have been with Rajamouli in most of his films. How is this film different?

I have been associated with Rajamouli since Sye. I have seen a constant growth in his story telling and use of technology which became big with Eega. The scale and budget has seen an escalation and we have attempted what no one ever did in Indian cinema. It is purely a fictitious film where we tried showcasing traditions like we saw in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon etc and other Chinese films.

What about this film touching people so much?

Whatever you have seen is a trailer is a visual. Generally when you see it, the connection happens. The cast and the previous film of the director and is being promoted as India’s expensive film. The emotional content is what might strike. So much of homework has gone into it. We were watching so many films to get some reference and show something different. Our concept artistes were working on it and it was complete team work. We were studying and wondering how Hollywood people must have used maximum numbers to get the real war feel. We trained 2000 people. My challenge was to capture director’s vision. The art director, costume designer’s work and finally the emotion that the artiste is delivering, needs to be captured and presented in a grand scale without losing any essence in any frame. It was a tremendous pressure as every frame had to show the grandeur, emotion and detailing that other departments have contributed and then, giving it to the visual effects department to get enhanced.

    How long was the shoot?

The shoot happened for 350 days spread across two years, shot in all the seasons. We were equipped with it and shot in minus ten temperatures in Bulgaria. We shot from extreme heat in Hyderabad to continuous rains in Mahabaleshwar. The fog was major challenge as it was ten feet away in Mahabaleshwar and Bulgaria. The camera helped me in seeing in low light conditions. We could hardly see anything, but the big crew was stationed and we couldn’t stop shoot. We had to shoot in worst weather conditions and still give it a good look.

Is giving a personal touch to the frames important?
Giving a personal touch is deviating; it would be a confusion. The basic job is to help the director tell his story in the best possible way. I need to blur my vision into his and  through my craft, deliver whatever best I can. It is finally about story telling. Be it light or the camera movement, every film comes with an inbuilt style and visual approach. We need to find out from the story and deliver it. For war scenes, we did extensive research and story boarding before i.e pre production. Before actual shoot, 2000 people were trained so that they don’t look comical on screen for the battle sequences and the training was shot on video cameras to get right angles. The idea is that once costumes come on board, it shouldn’t go wrong. We then edited, saw the footage and actually went to shoot. On the location, it is a different scene. The  cinematographer goes by his instinct, despite all the preparation on location. What he instinctively feels makes a difference. We have reference point to fall back on.
How are we different from international standards?
It is sad we are comparing with international standards, they are far superior. Perhaps in content, we can compete them but technology wise, they are far superior. It is a blessing to have Ruhi as my wife. Since three years, she was prepared to have no entertainment and made all the sacrifice. My wife has been very cooperative and has been taking care of the domestic aspects. It is because of her that I had zero tension. If I get an offer from Bollywood, why wouldn’t I take it up? It is not the next level. As of now we are doing Bahubali II. This is once in a lifetime opportunity and I want to focus on this.

Nassar on Baahubali, Excl Interview to T360

    Why is Rajamouli unique?

I love working in mythology as I am from theatre. I wait for such opportunities like fantasy, mythology. I have done various films but this is beyond Indian standards,. Indian cinema has evolved to a great standard of an epic, what I like in Rajamouli is he hasn’t set a time and genre for himself. Simhadri, Sye and he made a spectacular Magadheera and suddenly zeroes into a  fly and makes a blockbuster and now does such a gigantic Bahubali. He has surpassed himself in this process.
