August 2023: A Lesson for Tollywood Producers

1

Tollywood delivered the biggest-ever pan-Indian hits and it was SS Rajamouli who erased the language barrier in Indian cinema. After the pandemic, the non-theatrical rights of Telugu films witnessed a huge rise. With these developments, several over-enthusiastic producers and filmmakers have offered exorbitant remunerations for the actors. The audience are not interested to watch routine and predictable content. As the original films are available on various OTT platforms, the audience are not showing interest in remakes unless they are well made matching the nativity of the respective films.

Bhola Shankar and Gaandeevadhari Arjuna released in August and the films failed to report minimum openings. This is just because of the poor content. The trailers failed to impress the audience and the makers are now staring at huge losses. The distributors are not showing interest in buying such films for huge prices and most of the buyers are ready to release them on a distribution basis thus leaving the risk to the producer.

AK Entertainments and Sree Venkateswara Cine Chitra tasted heavy losses with these films and they are a lesson for Telugu cinema. The producers must be extra cautious on the budgets and the remunerations of the actors. Every film of an actor is different and the non-theatrical, theatrical business entirely depends on the content, genre and the director, technicians involved. Directors like Meher Ramesh and Praveen Sattaru delivered duds in the past. This had a huge impact on the theatrical business of Bhola Shankar and Gaandeevadhari Arjuna.

Chiranjeevi and Varun Tej pocketed huge remunerations for the films. Even their respective remunerations weren’t recovered through the theatrical rights. August 2023 is the best lesson to say how the perspective of the audience has changed. Every producer has to be very cautious before signing a film. The final budgets, remunerations and others should be considered as the entire risk now falls on the producer himself.

One more embarrassment for Varun Tej

1

Mega hero Varun Tej has done interesting and successful films in his career. His last film Ghani ended up as a flop and the film failed to register minimum openings leaving the makers in huge losses. The same is the case with his yesterday’s offering Gaandeevadhari Arjuna too opened on a poor note. The audience rejected the film badly and Karthikeya’s film Bedurulanka 2012 performed decent yesterday. Gaandeevadhari Arjuna will end up as one more disaster for Varun Tej and it is a huge embarrassment for the Mega actor in terms of the box-office performance.

Praveen Sattaru directed this action entertainer and the entire film was shot in London. The makers recovered partially through the non-theatrical rights but there were no takers for the theatrical rights of the film. Varun has been choosy and is picking up different films. But the box-office performance doesn’t depend on the actor’s decision or the choice. Varun Tej is shooting for Operation Valentine and the film hits the screens on December 8th.

After a disaster like Ghani, Mega Prince Varun Tej is ready with his next film Gaandeevadhari Arjuna. Touted to be a stylish action thriller, the film is directed by Praveen Sattaru and is extensively shot in London. Sakshi Vaidya is the heroine and BVSN Prasad bankrolled Gaandeevadhari Arjuna. Vinay Rai, Vimala Raman, Manish Chaudhari and Lee Nicholas Harris played other important roles. The film is having a wide release today and here is the review of Gaandeevadhari Arjuna:

Story:

Gaandeevadhari Arjuna story starts in London in an International Summit. Union Minister Aditya Ram (Nassar) attends the summit on behalf of India. But his life is at risk in London and Arjun (Varun Tej) joins his team as Bodyguard. Arjun takes the responsibility of his security for a week’s stay in London. The rest of Gaandeevadhari Arjuna is all about the real risk for Aditya Ram and about his speech in the summit. Watch Gaandeevadhari Arjuna to know about the real facts and twists.

Nassar says that human being himself is the biggest cancer in the world. He explains about protecting the environment and the consequences that humans would face if they ignore the environment. He also discloses how the top nations have been treating the poor ones as dump yards. This is a never-discussed concept but the director Praveen Sattaru fails badly to present the concept in an engaging manner. Gaandeevadhari Arjuna is a thriller that is not engaging.

When the life of a Union Minister is at risk, the government of the United Kingdom has to be extra cautious. But they rely on a private agency. A girl struggles hard to reach the minister and hand over some exclusive content in this digital era. The girl roams on the roads of London to meet the minister. Finally, it is a documentary which makes no difference.

The flashback of Varun Tej and Sakshi Vaidya looks completely forced. The film looks dragged because of this 20-minute episode. The mother episode thread of Varun Tej fails to impress the audience. The audience will be left puzzled if Vinay Rai is the lead antagonist or if he is given a guest role in Gaandeevadhari Arjuna. Vinay Rai’s role opens and he is presented as a pilot of a private jet. But his role is unveiled only during the interval episode. There is no direct interaction between the antagonist and protagonist till the climax.

The climax is dragged further after a boring second half. Nassar’s speech in the Summit looks lengthy and Arjun will be engaged in fighting with the antagonist. The audience would be left restless because of these episodes.

Varun Tej is one actor who loves to experiment. He has been planning to do a stylish action entertainer for a long time. Gaandeevadhari Arjuna is a film that offers nothing challenging for Varun Tej as an actor. His character lacks variations. Sakshi Vaidya too has nothing much to do except in the flashback episodes and the climax. She looked stylish on screen. Vinay Rai’s role is poorly designed and presented. Nassar looked good in his role.

Mickey J Meyer had no scope to compose any song in Gaandeevadhari Arjuna. The only single missed the mark of Mickey and the background score too failed badly. The entire film was shot in London and the visuals are rich. The cinematography work was decent. Praveen Sattaru fails badly as a director in narrating an interesting plot. Gaandeevadhari Arjuna will end up as a boring feast.
