INDIA to be renamed as BHARAT in upcoming parliament sessions?

1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to introduce a resolution during the upcoming five-day special session in Parliament, commencing on September 18, to rename India as ‘Bharat’. This proposed change has sparked a mix of reactions across the political spectrum. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his support for the renaming, tweeting, “REPUBLIC OF BHARAT – happy and proud that our civilization is marching ahead boldly towards AMRIT KAAL,” as reported by CNN-News18. However, the Congress party has raised concerns about the implications of this move. They pointed out that a dinner invitation from the president’s office to G20 summit delegates referred to Droupadi Murmu as the “President of Bharat” instead of the usual “President of India.” General Secretary Jairam Ramesh of the Congress suggested an alteration to Article 1 of the Constitution, proposing, “‘Bharat, that was India, shall be a Union of States’.” In response, JP Nadda, a prominent BJP leader, questioned the Congress’s resistance to the name Bharat. He inquired, “Why does the Congress party have so much objection to every subject related to the honor and pride of the country?” He also criticized the Congress for allegedly prioritizing the interests of a particular family over national interests.

However, it is true that such change requires constitutional amendment and such amendment requires special majority in both the Houses of Parliament not just the simple majority. We need to wait and see whether central government indeed does this exercise in the upcoming sessions of the parliament.

“Everyone in India will think it is not out, everyone in Australia will think it is out”: Ponting on Green’s catch

1

ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting feels that Cameron Green catch that saw Shubman Gill dismissed at a crucial stage of the ICC World Test Championship Final on day four will be discussed a lot and “everyone in India will think it is not out and everyone in Australia will think it is out”.

Gill was given out by TV umpire Richard Kettleborough on the stroke of tea on the fourth day of an enthralling contest at The Oval on Saturday after India made a bright start to their run chase, with 444 needed for victory.

Pacer Scott Boland found the edge of Gill’s bat and Green dived to his left in his favoured gully position to complete the catch, but debate has opened up in the cricket world on whether the Australia all-rounder had successfully got his hands under the ball and controlled it.

Green immediately started celebrating the superb grab with his teammates and Ponting said soon after the right call was made to send Gill on his way.

“When I saw it live, I knew it had carried to him on the full, but I wasn’t sure what the action was after that from all replays we have seen,” Ponting told the ICC.

“I actually think some part of the ball did touch the ground and it is the interpretation of the umpire that as long as the fielder has complete control of the ball before the ball hits the ground then it is out.

That must have been what the umpires’ interpretation was and I think that is exactly what happened. It carried probably six or eight inches off the ground then there was another action after that,” he added.

The former Australian captain expects the catch to be widely discussed after play and beyond, and that opinions will continue to be divided.

“There will be a lot of talk about it I am sure and there will probably be more talk in India than in Australia. Everyone in India will think it is not out and everyone in Australia will think it is out,” Ponting suggested.

The decision made by Kettleborough was made following a recent change to rules relating to the soft signal made by on field umpires, which has been removed from the game.

The one-off Test in south London is just the second Test match played under the new regulations that don’t require the on field umpires to provide their input and Ponting believes this would not have influenced the decision made by the experienced official.

“If it had have been given out on the field then I think the third umpire has to find conclusive evidence to overturn that decision and I don’t think there would have been conclusive evidence,” he said.

“The reason I am saying that is, even without the soft signal, the third umpire thought it was out. At the end of the day I think the correct decision has probably been made,” he added.

The 48-year old thinks the decision by the ICC to remove the ability for on field umpires to give a soft signal was one that is ultimately good for the game.

“I was happy for that soft signal to be taken out of the game…I think there were too many of those that seemed irrelevant,” Ponting said.

“Everyone will say now that without the soft signal it is going to what technology can see and technology can provide, but at the end of the day it is still the third umpire making the decision on what he can see,” he added

India to import oxygen generation plants, containers from Germany

Amid reports of shortage of oxygen in the hospitals during the second wave of Covid across the country, India will be importing oxygen generation plants and containers from Germany to cater the shortage.

Government sources said that 23 mobile oxygen generation plants are being air lifted from Germany. These will be deployed in static hospitals and provide adequate oxygen to the needy.

Further, sources said that India is procuring a large number of oxygen containers for adequate supply of oxygen in Delhi and other states.

IANS was first to report that India is deliberating on to import oxygen containers and equipment from foreign friendly nations to meet the crisis the country is facing after the second wave of Covid-19 hit severely.

The government planned to assign Indian Air Force to airlift in oxygen containers and equipment from friendly nations.

The problem India, in importing oxygen, facing is transportation due to an acute deficiency of containers to carry. The government is in talks with all the stakeholders to get the containers.

The government had roped in the air force to airlift oxygen cylinders, regulators, and essential medicines as the national capital region faces shortage of oxygen cylinders and medicines.

The IAF started airlifting personnel, doctors and nursing staff to help the government battle the pandemic.

So far IAF has airlifted doctors and nursing staff from Kochi, Mumbai, Vizag and Bengaluru for setting up of a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Covid hospital at Delhi. The force had also airlifted oxygen containers of DRDO from Bengaluru for Covid centres at Delhi.

On Tuesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh directed all the defence establishments to setting up of more Covid-19 hospitals, use emergency powers and to bring in retired personnel to tackle the crisis.

A roadmap on how military infrastructure can be used to ramp up the fight against Covid-19 was also discussed in a Covid preparedness review meeting chaired by the Minister.

Further after the directions of the government, Army hospital at Delhi Cantonment area has been converted into Covid facility for people infected with the virus in Delhi.

The DRDO had stated that they have set up a Covid hospital on Delhi with 250 beds, and the capacity will be increased to 500 and then 1,000, if required.

Rajnath Singh instructed more fully functional Covid hospitals be set up in Lucknow, Patna, Varanasi and Ahmedabad within 8-10 days and also in other places where required.

He said that the ESIC Hospital, which was converted to Covid hospital in Patna, has started functioning with 500 beds. He added that work is on war footing to set up a 450-bed hospital in Lucknow, a 750-bed hospital in Varanasi and a 900-bed hospital in Ahmedabad.

There were also discussion on roping in retired military doctors and nursing staff for assistance if they volunteer.

The minister also had suggested to utilise the services of vaccinated retired armed forces personnel to assist the civil administration and state governments to deal with the current situation.

India move to top spot in World Test C’ship standings

India on Tuesday moved to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings following their remarkable 2-1 series win over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shubman Gill (91), Rishabh Pant (89*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (56) all played brilliant innings as India chased down the mammoth 328-run target on the final day of the fourth and final Test at The Gabba.

Australia had won the first Test of the series in Adelaide, while bowling out India with the pink ball for their lowest Test total of 36. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side, however, registered a stunning comeback in Melbourne, winning the Boxing Day Test by eight wickets. The third Test then ended in an epic draw in Sydney.

India, with 71.7 percentage points won — the factor that determines the final placings rather than total points won following a change to the points system owing to the Covid-19 disruption — sit at the top spot in the WTC table while New Zealand, holding the second spot, has 70.0 percentage points. Sitting at the third spot is Australia with 69.2 percentage points.

“India on top. After the hard-fought win at The Gabba, India move to the No.1 spot in ICC World Test Championship standings. Australia slip to No.3,” ICC tweeted.

Courtesy the win in Brisbane, India now only need to win the upcoming four-match Test series against England with a 2-0 margin to seal a spot in the WTC final, currently slated to be played in June at the iconic Lord’s stadium.

Meanwhile, India have also displaced Australia to claim the second spot in ICC Test Rankings. The Kane Williamson-led side sit at the top of the podium.

“India displace Australia to become the new No.2 in the ICC Test Team Rankings,” ICC tweeted.

The India-England Test series begins February 5 in Chennai.

Pakistani supporters want India to win against England

0

Great things always happen in cricket and one such scene we are going to witness today when India take on England. This match result is more important to Pakistan and Bangladesh than India since the Semis chances to these teams depends on today’s match result.

English cricketer-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain put up a simple yet intriguing question on his Twitter page: Who would the Pakistan fans be supporting during India and England’s big clash on Sunday and the responses to his post weren’t surprising.

If England wins the match today India has nothing to lose since India is almost through the semis and just need one win in remaining 3 matches. Even if India looses all 3 matches and Pakistan wins next match against Bangladesh and secure 11 points, it is difficult for Pakistan to qualify for semis since India has better net run rate than Pakistan.

In this scenario, Pakistan and Bangladesh wants England to lose both the matches against India and New Zealand so that England would be out of the Tournament and PAK or BAN would have better chances to qualify for semis.

India have happy memories of Edgbaston (World Cup Special)

0

(Senior cricket writer Ashis Ray is a broadcaster and author of the book ‘Cricket World Cup: The Indian Challenge’)

India and England will clash at Edgbaston, Birmigham, in a what is a must-win match for the hosts in the World Cup. The two sides have played three World Cup matches against each other in the UK — in 1975, 1983 and 1999. England won the first time, but have lost all matches thereafter.

Here is a description of the 1999 World Cup clash between India and England at the Edgbaston, which India won by 63 runs, from the book ‘Cricket World Cup: The Indian Challenge.’

May 29-30, Edgbaston

On a lovely, sunny morning, before a capacity 20,000 crowd, Alec Stewart won his fifth toss of the tournament and elected to field. The pitch was a slow seamer, and the English bowlers exploited it well by not allowing any liberties to the Indian batsmen.

(Sourav) Ganguly was unfortunate to be run out when (Rahul) Dravid’s straight drive touched bowler Mark Ealham’s fingertips before hitting the non-striker’s stumps. But this setback was offset by (Sachin) Tendulkar escaping a run-out and a catch before he eventually hit Ealham down mid-wicket’s throat. So, Dravid’s 82-ball 53 became the highest score for the Indians.

An ominous cloud cover came to preside over play when England batted. Such conditions were ideal for (Debashish) Mohanty’s swing bowling. Stewart and Graeme Hick were out to him off consecutive legal deliveries (as the one in between was a wide). Nasser Hussain then succumbed in deteriorating light, before a torrential downpour halted play. England were 73 for three in 20.3 overs, with Graham Thorpe, quite the most skilful of the English batsmen, unbeaten on 36.

The match resumed the next morning, the only group tie in the tournament to spill over into the reserve day. To England’s disappointment, and the English media unduly fretted over this decision, Thorpe was ruled leg before wicket by umpire Javed Akhtar. Neil Fairbrother tried to keep the score ticking, but without much support. England were, consequently, eliminated at the preliminary stage of a World Cup for the first time; and calamitously, this debacle occurred at home.

England had arrived at Birmingham reasonably certain of a Super Six place. But Zimbabwe’s giant killing of South Africa meant they had no alternative to beating India. When the weather was no longer a factor — on the second day — their batsmen crumbled to pressure.

Also, contributing to the exit was their defeat at the hands of South Africa and the lackadaisical approach in their three victories. For young Andrew Flintoff, a conspicuous failure in the tournament, the final insult was having his bat nicked from the dressing room.

Toss: England

Man of the Match: SC Ganguly

India: 232/8 in 50 overs (Rahul Dravid 53, Sourav Ganguly 40, Mark Ealham 2/28, Darren Gough 2/51, Alan Mullally 2/54) vs England: 169 all out in 45.2 overs (Graham Thorpe 36, Nasser Hussain 33, Sourav Ganguly 3/27, Javagal Srinath 2/25, Anil Kumble 2/30).

India’s wrist spin duo sends South Africa on a Humpty Dumpty ride!

0

India 303/6, South Africa 179/10 (40 Overs)

As the Indian wrist spin duo; Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, took 8 for 69 in their 18 overs, the Proteas were rattled out for 179 in 40 overs. With this win, India lead the 6-match ODI series 3-0. Interestingly, this is the first time India beat South Africa in 3 consecutive ODIs. The 3rd ODI venue, Cape Town is boasted as the favourite venue for the Proteas. The South Africans came into the match with their star players; AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, and keeper Quinton de Kock, out with injuries.
Thanks to Rohit’s poor show, Rabada got him for a record 5th time on this tour so far. With Rohit back in the pavilion, Kohli arrived at the crease. Surviving a close call, thanks to the snicko, the Indian captain went on to bring his 2nd century in three matches, and 3rd on this tour. His unbeaten 160* took India to 303/6. Shikhar Dhawan’s 76 of 63 balls resulted in a 140-run 2nd wicket partnership with Kohli.

Kuldeep and Chahal took 4 a-piece, while Bumrah took 2 wickets. Except for JP Duminy’s knock of 51 from 83 balls, the rest of the South African batsman lacked character. Virat Kohli has been awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his scintillating knock of 160 runs.

US businesses betting big on new envoy to India

0

With Kenneth Juster being named as the new US Ambassador to India, US businesses are expecting that bilateral commercial ties will grow with him in that position, according to a senior office-bearer of a US-India business body.

“We are very optimistic, we are grateful that he accepted the job. It’s maybe the position that business has with his appointment because he understands business,” Edward Monser, Vice-President of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), told IANS in an interview here.

“We have worked with him before. He has had relationships with all of us in the executive council of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum,” Monser, who is also the President and COO of Emerson Electric and is here for an energy forum, said.

“So, we know him well. We trust him. Most importantly, he doesn’t wait for things to become a problem. He is proactive, he reaches out to both sides. He makes sure people understand and he communicates very well.”

Juster succeeds Richard Verma, who left after Donald Trump was sworn in as US President in January this year.

Juster has served as the Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs under Trump and was also the Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security under former President George W. Bush.

He is expected to take up office towards the end of this month or in the beginning of November.

Stating that most proactive ambassadors know, understand and promote business development as well as good diplomatic dialogue, Monser said that “India and the US will get along better if our commercial relationships are stronger”.

He is of the view that there is now an opportunity to balance trade between India and the US.

“The dialogue around how to balance it and where there are opportunities to balance the trade I think are productive,” he stated. “The new Ambassador will be able to help with that.”

Monser said that the areas of advanced agriculture, defence and and energy “are really good opportunities to close the gap”.

“By closing the trade gap I think you will see benefit more clearly on both sides.”

Combined India-US trade stands at $124 billion but Monser is of the view that “we can realise the potential and go to $500 billion”.

“We see a path there that could be shared and benefit India and benefit the US,” he said.

“I think that’s why our leaders get along so well because they can see it too. They can see the real opportunities. So, we want to stay focused on growing the trade between the two countries, growing the investments between the two countries and encouraging the investment both ways.”

On the role of the newly-formed USISPF, he said that that the “old structure” kept businesses from both sides from going to the new business models that are most important.

“So the best thing to do was to start all over again. Start anew, again with very experienced people, people that have solved problems in the US and India for some time,” Monser said.

He also appreciated new Indian initiatives like Digital India and Skill India.

“I think we will always have a challenge to make sure that we have the number of engineers and scientists we need,” Monser said.

“But that’s not the major issue. The bulk of the population, more than 50 per cent of the jobs are what I would call technical for which you don’t need an engineering degree but you have to have training and knowledge to work in a digital economy.”

99% of the demonetised notes back into the banking system

0

Reserve Bank of India disclosed that about 99% of the banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes have returned into the system. How will Trump’s India card play in the Afghan great game?

0

United States President Donald Trump has played the India card against Pakistan in the Afghan great game, but would that become a true trump card for India?

Earlier this week, Trump assigned a “critical” role for India in his country’s South Asia strategy for fighting terrorism, building up a safe Afghanistan and appealed for help, while at the same time warning Pakistan of repercussions for the double game of unleashing terrorists against the Afghans and the US while collecting billions from Washington.

It amounts to threatening Islamabad that Washington could pivot to India if it didn’t stop supporting “the same organisations that try every single day to kill our people”, as Trump put it.

The US move comes as the civilian leadership is unmoored after Nawaz Sharif was removed as Pakistan Prime Minister by a court order.

It also coincides with the simmering military standoff between India and China, the other power with deep involvement in the region and patron of Pakistan. How Beijing reacts would be a factor in the way things work out for India.

There are two other players in the great game, Iran and Russia, with whom the US has a hostile relationship. They can influence developments in Afghanistan and India can play a covert intermediary role between them.

Past US Presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, have in joint statements acknowledged New Delhi’s humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan, but what makes Trump’s statement different is that he openly incorporates India into the US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia and juxtaposes it with his warnings to Pakistan.

Trump putting Pakistan on notice directly marks a change from the tradition of the Cold War that made Pakistan the indisputable and indispensable ally and there is a twist of irony here.

Soon after 9/11 in 2001, as the US prepared to go into Afghanistan, India offered the use of its airbases, but it was turned down and Washington decided to go with Pakistan despite its history of aiding both the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Trump’s request to India was deliberately open-ended, while stressing what is already being done. “We want them to help us more with Afghanistan, especially in the area of economic assistance and development,” he said.

New Delhi has committed more than $3 billion in aid to Kabul and has undertaken important projects like constructing a Parliament house and building major highways in the face of Taliban attacks.

And there limits to what more it can do.

India couldn’t send troops in combat or frontline advisory roles. But it already trains Afghan troops and police in India — and had one time set a target of putting 30,000 of them through the paces. Now, trainers could work in Afghanistan itself, if India chooses and the US agrees to drop its opposition driven by Pakistani sensibilities — but away from areas of direct conflict.

But it could let the US use airbases in India, though Islamabad could ban overflights and a route through Iran is out of question.

India has provided military helicopters to Afghanistan, and General John Nicholson, the US commander in that country, has recently said that Kabul could do with more of them — as well as other military supplies. New Delhi could also increase its role as middleman for supplying Russian weaponry and spares given the Washington-Moscow standoff.

In the development sphere, India could increase — and probably will — its aid to Afghanistan in cash and kind. However, it may not be able to sustain a major expansion of assistance programmes requiring the deployment of Indian citizens because that would likely require security personnel to protect them and risk direct confrontation.

A major component of India’s economic assistance to Afghanistan runs counter to US interests as dictated by the Middle East because it is linked to Iran. India is developing the Chhabahar port in Iran that will provide landlocked Afghanistan an outlet to the world using the Indian-built Delaram-Zaranj highway to the Iran border. In turn, that highway will link to the Ring Road project that connects important Afghan cities.

This will provide a significant boost to Afghanistan’s economy.

At the same time, dire strategic compulsions could make the US overcome its repugnance to Tehran and through India use the Chhabahar link to get supplies into Afghanistan.

What is behind the changed US attitude to Islamabad — and to India as a collateral — and Trump’s own reluctance to further get involved in Afghanistan? It is the influence of the triumvirate of generals, Chief of State John Kelly, Defence Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, with personal connections to the Afghan war.

Kelly lost his son, a Marine officer in Afghanistan to a terrorist roadside bomb, making the war on the Taliban personal. Mattis was the commander of the CENTCOM that oversaw the Afghan war and McMaster as the deputy to the planning commander at the international forces headquarters in Kabul.

Both have seen Islambad’s double game. Already last month, the US withheld $50 million in aid Pakistan citing its failure to rein in the Haqqani terrorist network.

Add to that Trump’s disenchantment with China over its refusal or inability to rein in North Korean taunts and threats.

How will the military and Islamist establishments react? To acquiesce to the US is one option that may be accompanied by the diversion of Islamist terrorists to India.

The other option of defiance would depend on China. Beijing sees Washington-New Delhi ties in the larger picture — its state media has accused the West, specifically the US, of instigating war between it and India.

But Beijing has some limitations here. Beyond making up for the loss of US billions to Pakistan if Islamabad stood firm, China also has strategic interests in the region that could be endangered by terrorism: The One Road One Belt project and the likelihood of terrorism getting a boost in the Uighar region and in Central Asia.

The real danger would be a Pakistani terror push towards India with Chinese backing.

Congress targets VP candidate Venkaiah for deals favouring his kin

0

Congress is doing its best to ensure NDA Vice presidential candidate Venakiah’s name continues to surface for all wrong reasons. Congress leader Jai Ram Ramesh accused the Telangana government for purchasing police vehicles from Venakaiah’s son owned Harsha Toyota and KCR son’s owned Himanshu Toyota without following the due procedure of bidding.

It may be recalled that in order to improve the brand image of Telangana police, the state government procured Innova vehicles in 2014. Congress accused that without following the due process of inviting bids, TS ordered police vehicles worth Rs. 270 crore.

Congress also claimed that in Madhya Pradesh Government allotted 20 acres in Bhopal at throwaway prices to a Trust owned by Venakiah. Ramesh accused that as an act of favouritism by BJP government, the land classified as “residential and forestry” was given permission to operate for “commercial” reasons without full disclosure.

Two days after reports surfaced that, Swarna Bharat Trust was given an exemption of 2 crore rupees secretly by HMDA, another accusation from the past again Venkaiah purposefully surfaced.

Venkaiah said that these allegations were baseless and the car dealership issue has been sorted in Court. He held that that other trusts also got such exemptions from the government. Former Union minister stated that it is preposterous on part of Congress to stoop to such level in view of the Vice Presidential elections.

Kohli should be boss of India team: Thakur

0

Asserting that the captain’s role is more important than that of the coach, former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) President Anurag Thakur has called for skipper Virat Kohli being allowed full control over the Indian team.

The Indian team, especially skipper Virat Kohli, has been at the centre of a controversy after Anil Kumble resigned as coach following a humiliating 180-run loss to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final on June 18.

Kumble had hinted at differences with Kohli in his resignation letter to the BCCI. There have also been reports that several players were unhappy with Kumble’s strict disciplinarian approach.

Some players were also reportedly unhappy after Kumble handed a harsh dressing down to the team following the defeat in the Champions Trophy final.

Following Kumble’s departure, Vinod Rai, head of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), and several former players have come out in support of the legendary leg-spinner.

Thakur, however, defended Kohli and harked back to 2006-07 and the controversy between former India captain Sourav Ganguly and then coach Greg Chappell as an example.

“Why is extra pressure being created on Virat? It is not right to target Virat over these issues because this is not the first time such a thing has happened. Greg Chappell was also removed earlier.

“It has always been the case that the captain is more important than the coach. The captain’s opinion is given importance even in selection matters because ultimately it is he who has to make the team perform,” Thakur told IANS.

“Right now, there is no better batsman than Virat in Indian cricket. If we have to maintain the current standards of the Indian team over the next 10 years, and even improve our performance levels, then we have to depend on Virat,” he added.

Thakur, who was forced to step down as BCCI chief following the implementation of the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R.M. Lodha committee, also took a dig at the present dispensation over the issue.

Observing that such controversies never took place during his stint with the board, the current head of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) alleged that the present BCCI management has “mishandled” the entire affair.

“As long as I was at the head of the BCCI, there were no controversies of this nature. We had conducted all our appointments in a transparent manner. The people running the BCCI at present should be asked why these things come into the public domain,” Thakur said.

“My opinion is totally clear in this matter. Virat should be the boss of the team. He must be the boss, he is the boss. He is the captain of the team and that is why he should be the boss,” he asserted.

Talking about the role of the coach, Thakur said: “The coach has his own importance. But it is the captain who leads the 11 players on the field, that is why his words and his needs should be given more importance.”

Kohli deletes year-old tweet welcoming Kumble

0

India captain Virat Kohli has deleted his year-old tweet welcoming Anil Kumble’s appointment as the national cricket team coach, further exposing the bitterness that had crept in.

Kohli deleted the post on the microblogging site close on the heals of the spin legend’s decision to resign from his post due to “untenable” differences with the captain.

Soon after Kumble’s appointment, Kohli had tweeted on June 23 last year, greeting him with a smiley and expressed hopes of a great future under his guidance.

“Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you ??” Kohli had posted on his official twitter handle, which he has deleted now.

Kumble, who was given a one-year tenure, quit from his position as the head coach after the final of the Champions Trophy.

Although the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, wanted him to continue but Kumble relinquished his position, stating that his relationship with Kohli became “untenable”.

According to reports, Kumble and Kohli had a major fallout in the the beginning of the year and were not on talking terms for the last six months.

The situation worsened further after India’s humiliating loss to arch-rivals Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final.

Kumble did not travel with the team to the West Indies, and later officially tendered his resignation.

India Top Remittance-receiving Country in 2016: UN Report

0

Indians working across the globe sent home USD 62.7 billion last year, making India the top remittance-receiving country surpassing China, according to a UN report.

The ‘One Family at a Time’ study by the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) said about 200 million migrants globally sent more than USD 445 million in 2016 as remittances to their families, helping to lift millions out of poverty.

Remittance flows have grown over the last decade at a rate averaging 4.2 percent annually, from USD 296 billion in 2007 to USD 445 billion in 2016.

The study is the first-ever of a 10-year trend in migration and remittance flows over the period 2007-2016. It said 80 per cent of remittances are received by 23 countries, led by India, China, the Philippines, Mexico and Pakistan.

The top 10 sending countries account for almost half of annual flows, led by the US, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

The study said India was the top receiving country for remittances in 2016 at USD 62.7 billion, followed by China (USD 61 billion), the Philippines (USD 30 billion) and Pakistan (USD 20 billion).

In the decade between 2007 and 2016, India surpassed China to become the top receiving country for remittances. In 2007, India was on the second spot, behind China, with USD 37.2 billion in remittances as compared to USD 38.4 billion for China.

The study said Asia is the highest originating region with 77 million migrants; with 48 million remaining within the region. Over the past decade, remittances to Asia and the Pacific increased by 87 per cent, reaching USD 244 billion, while migration grew by only 33 per cent in comparison.

Asia remains the main remittance-receiving region, with 55 per cent of the global flows and 41 per cent of total migrants. It is projected that an estimated USD 6.5trillion in remittances will be sent to low and middle-income countries between 2015 and 2030.

The study added that the amount of money migrants send to their families in developing countries has risen by 51 per cent over the past decade – far greater than the 28 per cent increase in migration from these countries.

This dramatic increase in the amount of money migrants send home to their families in developing countries is helping to lift millions out of poverty and in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the study said.

“About 40 per cent of remittances – USD 200 billion – are sent to rural areaswhere the majority of poor people live,” said Pedro de Vasconcelos, manager of IFAD’s Financing Facility for Remittances and lead author of the report, adding that the money is spent on food, health care, better educational opportunities and improved housing and sanitation.

“Remittances are therefore critical to help developing countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG),” de Vasconcelos said.

Currently, about 200 million migrant workers support some 800 million family members globally. In 2017, an expected one-in-seven people globally will be involved in either sending or receiving more than USD 450 billion in remittances, according to the report.

Migration flows and remittances are having large-scale impacts on the global economy and political landscape. Total migrant earnings are estimated at USD 3 trillion annually, approximately 85 per cent of which remains in the host countries.

The money sent home averages less than one per cent of their host’s GDP.Taken together, these individual remittances account for more than three times the combined official development assistance (ODA) from all sources, and more than the total foreign direct investment to almost every low-and middle-income country.

The report makes several recommendations for improving public policies and outlines proposals for partnerships with the private sector to reduce costs and create opportunities for migrants and their families to use their money more productively.

“As populations in developed countries continue to age, the demand for migrant labour is expected to keep growing in the coming years,” de Vasconcelos said.

“However, remittances can help the families of migrants build a more secure future, making migration for young people more of a choice than a necessity,” he added.

Despite the decade-long trend, IFAD President Gilbert Houngbo noted the impact of remittances must first be viewed one family at a time.

“It is not about the money being sent home, it is about the impact on people’s lives. The small amounts of USD 200 or USD 300 that each migrant sends home make up about 60 per cent of the family’s household income, and this makes an enormous difference in their lives and the communities in which they live,” Houngbo said.

Champions Trophy 2017: Everybody Wants India-England Final, Says Kohli

Done with the tough part of making it through the league phase, Indian captain Virat Kohli says opposition hardly matters in the Champions Trophy semifinal and final even though an India-England final is what everybody seems to want.

India will take on Bangladesh in the second semifinal on Thursday after England and Pakistan play out the first last-four clash tomorrow.

The Indian cricket captain was joined by some of his teammates, including former captain M S Dhoni, and coach bowler Anil Kumble at a special reception at the Lord’s
Cricket Ground last evening.

The event was hosted by the Indian High Commission to mark the UK-India Year of Culture.

“It would not have mattered who we were playing in the semis. The league phase is the toughest. We have an opportunity to win one game and enter the finals. Everyone wants to see an India-England final. If both teams play well, people might get what they want to see,” he said.

Asked which team he would prefer to come up against in the finals, he added: “Anyone. We would just be happy to be in the finals.”

Kohli said it was a treat to be welcomed by”massive crowds wherever we play”.

“If there is a sunny day in England, there is no better place to play cricket. The white ball hasn’t historically swung as much here. When the clouds comes in, the conditions
become a bit more difficult,” he said.

“You have to respect the conditions here regardless of what score you are batting at. That is the beautiful thing about playing here, it challenges you as a batsman,” he added.

The reception marked the launch of ‘Cricket Connects’ exhibition, which opens at the Nehru Centre in London and will be touring Edinburgh and Birmingham as a celebration of
cricketing ties between India and the UK.

“What better way to connect than cricket. Everyone is hoping for an India-England final at The Oval in this special UK-India Year of Culture. May the better team win,” said Indian high commissioner to the UK, Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha.

The reception was attended by a number of former India and England cricket personalities including Farookh Engineer, Dilip Doshi and former England players Andrew Strauss and Monty Panesar

Sushma Swaraj comes to aid of Pakistani boy with heart ailment

0

A four-month-old Pakistani boy suffering from a serious heart ailment will get a fresh lease of life as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj offered him a medical visa on humanitarian grounds.

Rohaan, a resident of Lahore, has a hole in his heart and would now get treatment at Noida’s Jaypee Hospital.

Due to the tensions between India and Pakistan, Rohaan’s parents were unable to get a medical visa for their child’s treatment even though his condition was critical.

Rohaan’s father Kanwal Saadik finally sought help from Sushma Swaraj on Twitter informing her about the critical condition of his son.

The Minister tweeted back assuring him that his child would not suffer because of any political issue and that they would get the medical visa for his treatment in India.

“The child will not suffer. Please contact Indian High Commission in Pakistan. We will give the medical visa,” she replied.

Rohaan finally got the visa and would now come for his treatment via Wagha border on Monday.

Jaypee Hospital CEO Manoj Luthra said: “Keeping aside the tensions between the two countries, the minister did a noble act of thinking about the child’s health. We welcome the baby and family and are pleased to know that with our expert doctors and world class services that we provide, we are able to build trust for us in people across nations.”

The boy will first be treated by paediatric cardiologist Ashutosh Marwah and later will undergo a heart surgery conducted by paediatric cardiac surgeon Rajesh Sharma, a statement said.

Qatar-Gulf rift not very good for India

0

In a colossal diplomatic shock, four Gulf Countries including Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Bahrain cut relations with Qatar. Travel has been suspended and the borders are shut, cornering Qatar for supporting terrorism. While the impact of this severing ties is being discussed, it will have prospective impact on Indian economy.

The largest expatriate community of Indians are in Qatar, KSA and UAE two of which are now against Qatar. Around 6.5 lakh Indians are living in Qatar employed in various sectors. The democracy has strong ties with monarchy in defence and energy sectors.

Indian companies are working on large scale in the infrastructure field and even in IT sector in the country. Larsen & Toubro recently won 2.1 Billion Qatar Riyadh worth highway project. Doha Metro project worth 740 million dollars was given to this Indian firm. India has commercial ties with Qatar. In 2014-15 $ 15.67 Billion, worth business happened between the two countries while $ 9.93 Billion of bilateral trade in the 2015-16.

As much as 7.5 million metric tonnes of gas was imported last year which constitutes 65 percent of gas import in India. Petronet LNG has a contract to import 8.5 million tonnes of LNG annually from Qatar.

Almost 15% of exports from India go to Qatar. Since 2013-14 bilateral trade has been up-welling between two countries. While India imports oil and gas from Qatar, it exports iron, steel, plastic, construction materials, electrical and electronic goods, textiles, chemicals, precious stones, diamonds, rubber, legumes, spices and cereals.

India is 3rd largest exporter for Qatar and 10th position in imports. The Gulf countries by isolating Qatar will create economic crisis which will have impact on India. Chief minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj urging to take effective steps to ensure safety of Indians as there are 3 lakh Keralites in Qatar. However, Swaraj said that India will not be impacted by some Gulf countries cutting off diplomatic ties with Qatar. Terming it as an “internal matter of GCC” she said that the government is trying to find out if any Indians are stuck in Qatar. Nonetheless, the balance of trade is currently skewed in Qatar’s favour.

India making billions for signing Paris deal: Trump

Justifying his decision to pull the US out of the Paris climate accord, President Donald Trump hit out at India and China, saying both benefited most from the pact while the US was treated unfairly.

In a speech from White House’s Rose Garden on Thursday, Trump pointed out that New Delhi would get billions of dollars for meeting its commitments under the Paris deal.

He said India along with China would double their coal-fired power plants in the years to come, gaining a financial advantage over the US.

“India makes its participation contingent on receiving billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid from developed countries. There are many other examples. But the bottom line is that the Paris accord is very unfair to the US,” he said.

Trump said he took the decision to protect the interest of American businesses and workers. “Compliance to the deal could cost 2.7 million lost jobs by 2025… Believe me, this is not what we need.

“I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” the President said.

“As of today, the US will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on the US.”

Trump, pointing towards India and China, said the deal “disadvantages the US to the exclusive betterment of other countries”.

China, he said, will be allowed to build hundreds of additional coal plants. “So, we can’t build the plants, but they can, according to this agreement.”

“India will be allowed to double its coal production by 2020. Think of it. India can double their coal production. We’re supposed to get rid of ours. Even Europe is allowed to continue construction of coal plants.”

Trump said that under the agreement, China will be able to increase these emissions by a staggering number of years – 13. “They can do whatever they want for 13 years. Not us.

“We are getting out, but we will start to negotiate, and we will see if we can make a deal that’s fair. And if we can, that’s great. And if we can’t, that’s fine,” he said.

The US now joins Nicaragua and Syria as the only non-participants to the accord, signed by 195 nations including Washington in Paris in December 2015 to combat climate change.

India retain No.1 Test ranking post annual update

India retained their number one position on the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test team rankings following the annual update in which series results from 2013-14 are no longer included and outcomes from the 2015-16 series are weighted at 50 per cent.

The Virat Kohli-led side now leads South Africa by six points following the annual update, only nine points separate third-ranked Australia from seventh-ranked Sri Lanka, with ninth-ranked Bangladesh trailing eighth-ranked West Indies by six points.

India has moved to 123 points after gaining one point. However, second-ranked South Africa now have the table-toppers firmly within their sights after vaulting from 109 points to 117 points. This jump means the pre-update gap of 13 points has now been trimmed to just six points.

While India and South Africa have made upward movements, Australia, England and Pakistan have headed in the opposite direction, according to an ICC statement.

Australia have retained their third place but has plummeted from 108 points to 100 points, England are in fourth but have slipped to 99 points after conceding two points, whereas Pakistan dropped behind New Zealand in sixth place after conceding four points to sit on 93 points.

The swings for Faf du Plessis’s and Steve Smith’s sides have come after South Africa’s 1-2 loss to Australia, and Australia’s 5-0 series win over England in 2013-14 have both been dropped for calculation purposes.

Sri Lanka is seventh on 91 points (up by one), West Indies eighth on 75 points (up by five), Bangladesh ninth on 69 points (up by three) and Zimbabwe 10th with zero points (down by five).
