Opinion – Big statements on women empowerment, but no woman in cabinet

0

Ivanka’s trip to Inida is over and she left Hyderabad today. She spoke about women empowerment and throughout the summit, there was focus on women-led businesses and women entrepreneurs. KTR, who hosted the sessions and facilitated discussions on woman empowerment impressed Ivanka with his spontaneity as well as knowledge. But he drew flak in one particular situation during the summit.

KCR’s cabinet has been criticized in the past as well, as he has not appointed a single woman in the last three and a half years, for a ministerial post. So when the same topic – “women in legislatures” was discussed during the GES summit, KTR could not hide his embarrassment. Later, congress leader DK Aruna fired salvos on the government as she spoke – “52% participants in the summit are women. But, there is no woman in CM KCR’s cabinet. What will the Chief Minister speak about women empowerment during the global meet when there is no women representation in the state Cabinet. It is ridiculous that KCR spoke about women empowerment, when the TRS failed to appoint a single woman Minister.” She also alleged that the government had done injustice to women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

But minister KTR later spoke about lack of women cabinet ministers in the government and said that “There are only 6 women legislatures. There are not enough women legislators and also due to some political reasons so that there are no women cabinet ministers and he hoped that CM would include some of them in next reshuffle.” He has added that “TRS supports women reservations in state Assembly and Parliament and we have urged the central government to bring the women reservation bill.”

Though KTR later remarked that their party supports woman reservation bill and he “hoped” KCR to add some woman in cabinet, as the saying goes, actions speak much louder than words. So not having woman minister in the cabinet was unexpectedly highlighted bringing embarrassment to the government that was burning the candles at both ends to make the summit on women entrepreneurship a grand success.

Much remains to be done towards equitable law for women: Ivanka

0

Ivanka Trump, daughter and advisor of US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday said much remains to be done with regard to equitable laws for women in many developing, as well as developed countries.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) here, Ivanka said: “When it comes to equitable laws, while many developed and developing countries have made tremendous strides, there is still much work to be done.”

She highlighted that in some countries, women are not allowed to own property, travel freely, or work without the consent of their husbands. In some other countries, the cultural and family pressure is so great that women do not feel the freedom to work outside the home.

“Our administration is striving to promote greater opportunity for women around the world, both through our domestic reforms and our international initiatives,” she said.

She also said that when women work, it creates a “multiplier effect”, and leads to more reinvestment in families and society.

“When women work, it creates a unique multiplier effect. Women are more likely than men to hire other women, and to give them access to capital, mentorship and networks. Women are also more likely to reinvest their income back in their families and communities,” she said.

She also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his belief that progress of humanity is incomplete without the empowerment of women.

“Just consider, if India closes the labour-force gender gap by half, your economy could grow by over $150 billion in the next three years,” she said.

Ivanka Trump also narrated stories of women entrepreneurs who used technology to change lives, including that of Rajlakshmi Borthakur from Bengaluru, who invented a smart glove that predicts, manages, and detects different diseases and disorders using Artificial Intelligence.

The gloves were invented by Borthakur after her son started getting seizures at a young age. Now her company, Terra Blue, aims to make specialty healthcare accessible in even the most remote places in India.

She also mentioned the stories of Dara Dotz from San Francisco, who co-founded Field Ready to provide life-saving supplies through 3-D printing and Reyhan from Azerbaijan, a 15-year-old who founded a company that harvests energy from rainwater.

Visiting Hyderabad? – Expect the unexpected!

0

Those who are planning to visit Hyderabad from the US, Canada or nearby Gulf countries in the next few days are hereby warned, expect the unexpected when you land here.

As the clock is ticking for the mother of all summit conferences as as far as Telangana is concerned, it is turning both the state government and Hyderabadis crazy.

First, of course, the traffic that has already gone out of control with road blocks, traffic curbs and detours. Though people have hailed the sprucing up of certain sections of Hyderabad, for the November 28-30 Global Entrepreneurship Summit, hours of sitting behind the wheel on roads is enraging commuters.

Adding to this chaos, is an expected one lakh marriages (yes, 100,000) in a matter of one week beginning now. With thousands of friends and relatives from within the Telugu states and abroad descending on the city by every available flight, train, bus and personal transport, Hyderabad is now choc a bloc 24X7.

Second, security. With several rings of security — state, Central and American – residents living near and around areas Ivanka to visit/stay have been told not to entertain strangers or guests in view of high threat perceptions to VVIP.

Not minding the inconvenience being caused to the people, the KCR government has finalized arrangements for royal treatment to Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump and his special adviser.

Though the Nizam era is gone, Ivanka is going to get such royal treatment in a democratic state. She will be treated to a state banquet at the famous Faluknama Palace where she will sit next to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will inaugurate the Metro (officially confirmed) on November 28. On the same day, he will address the Entrepreneur Summit along with Ivanka.

Then, the gifts to be presented to Ivanka too are befitting royalty. If press reports are to be believed, the gift hamper contains a cut diamond necklace, strands of Hyderabadi pearls, hand woven silk sarees from Gadwal and Sircilla, all packed in a special box.

And, finally, after sending street beggars to prisons or rehabilitation homes, it is the turn of stray dogs. Hundreds of them are being rounded up!
