Prof K Nageshwar — Telugus Anger likely to Hit BJP in Karnataka

Telugu people have a sizable presence in neighbouring states for a host of reasons. The parts of Karnataka which were earlier part of Hyderabad state has sizable presence o f Telugu people. This region is still called Hyderabad-Karnataka . Hyderabad–Karnataka is the name given to north-east Karnataka . It is the Kannada-speaking part of the Hyderabad State, that was ruled by the Nizams of Hyderabad until 1948. After merging with the Indian union, the region was part of Hyderabad State until 1956. The Hyderabad Karnataka/Northeast Karnataka region comprises Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Gulbarga of Hyderabad state and, Bellary of Madras state that are in the present state of Karnataka.

As the erstwhile Andhra state was part of the composite state of Madras, a large number of telugu speaking people remained in Madras state now called Tamil Nadu . Similarly, there is a sizable population of telugu speaking people in neighbouring Odisha who migrated from North Coastal Andhra . Besides, thanks to the growth of information technology in Bangalore which is considered as the silicon valley of India , a large section of telugus live in the capital city of Karnataka .
There has been a migration of agricultural communities from telugu regions to several districts of Karnataka like Gangavathi .

However, telugus living in the neighbouring states never nursed linguistic regional political aspirations and became integral part of social and political life of those states.

But, the blatant denial of special status to Andhra Pradesh and the two telugu regional parties in power and even the opposition taking a strident anti BJP positions, telugus started getting alienated from the saffron party . This is likely to prove costlier for the Modi brigade in the ensuing Karnataka elections.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) which recently withdrew from the BJP-led NDA alliance at the Centre urged Telugu voters in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, to vote for anybody but not the BJP.

Addressing media in Bangalore , Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishna Murthy, said that Telugu people in the southern states, especially in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should vote against the BJP because Prime Minister Narendra Modi has refused to accord Special Category Status (SCS) to the state.

Meanwhile, the TRS chief and Telangana chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao urged the telugu people in Karnataka to vote for Janata Dal (S). Though this call is interpreted as harming the chances of congress, it still cannot be considered as an endorsement of BJP. Thus, the appeal of both TDP and TRS to the telugu voters in Karnataka is certainly hostile to BJP .

The TDP has a significant support base among the Kammas, who are estimated to be a deciding factor in at least 12 Assembly constituencies in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region in the ensuing election. These Telugu-speaking voters, mostly farmers hailing from Andhra Pradesh, migrated to the neighbouring Karnataka over 50 years ago, setting up over 1,000 camps in Bellary, Koppal, Yadgir, Raichur, and Kalaburgi districts of the state.

The Akhil Karnataka Kammawari Sangham reportedly claimed that their population in Karnataka could be nearly about 35 lakh, with three to five lakhs concentrated in the Hyderabad-Karnataka border region. In Bellary Rural Assembly segment, 30,000 voters belong to this community. Their votes could also be decisive in the Assembly constituencies in Koppal, Gangavathi, Kampli, Shiraguppa, Manvi, Raichur, Sindhanoor, and Yadgir districts.

The opinion leaders among telugu community living in Karnataka have already started a social media campaign exposing the BJP for denying special status to Andhra Pradesh.

The supporters of TDP are loyal to the party even when they live in far away continents . It is obvious that those who live in the neighbouring states are emotionally connected with their home state of Andhra Pradesh.

According to media reports, BJP is planning to field the two brothers of Gali Janardhana Reddy , the Bellary mining baron , Karunakara and Somashekhara from Harapanahalli and Bellary City in a bid to compensate for the loss of telugu vote due to dissent over denial of special status. In 2008, the Reddy brothers, had helped the saffron party come to power for the first time in a southern state.

The BJP leadership is planning to field BJP leaders from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to campaign for the party in Karnataka. But, the absence of any influential telugu leader for the party after M Venkaiah Naidu became Vice President of India is a major handicap for the saffron party .

The MIM ‘s decision to not to contest Karnataka elections has further harmed the BJP’s chances. The MIM has a sizable influence among Muslim voters in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. The MIM stated that it has taken a decision to this effect to defeat BJP by avoiding a split in anti BJP vote.

Karnataka to vote on May 12, results on May 15

0

The Election Commission on Tuesday announced that voting to elect a new Karnataka Assembly will be held on May 12 and results will be declared on May 15, setting the ball rolling for one of the most prestigious battles between the Congress and the BJP.

“It will be a single phase election,” Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat told reporters here.

He said the date of notification is April 17 and the last date to file nominations is April 24. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 25 and the last day for withdrawal is April 27.

He said the model code of conduct came into effect immediately in the state which will also be applicable to the central government.

The polling will take place on May 12 and counting will be held three days later on May 15, he said.

Rawat said VVPAT machines, apart from EVMs, will be deployed in Karnataka for the polls.

The 224-member Assembly expires on May 28 in the state where the Congress is currently in power, with 122 seats against the BJP’s 43.

Karnataka is one of the eight states where polls were scheduled this year. Elections to three northeastern states were held last month.

Modi puts Karnataka Congress government in tricky situation

0

Jamili elections. The topic that was debated a lot in last one year(https://www.telugu360.com/analysis-jamili-elections-projected-panacea/). However, as of now, it is confirmed that center is not going for Jamili elections, i.e. simultaneous elections in all states, for 2019. But Center is planning to postpone Karnataka election and give Siddaramaiah led congress an addition 6 months of ruling, as per reports.

The Fourteenth legislative assembly election was held on 5 May 2013 to elect members from 223 constituencies in the Indian state of Karnataka. Congress party under the leadership of Siddaramaiah won the election and formed the government. Now by May 2018, the government finishes 5 years of people mandate and has to face elections. However, in a shocking move, Karnataka state government received a letter from the BJP led Central government which asks the Congress led State government to consider the proposal to defer Assembly elections for six months. The reason for this is to hold Karnatka elections along with other state elections due in November. This is in sync with PM Modi’s call for ‘one nation; one election’ (Jamili) strategy. Moreover, despite the fact that elections are due in May 2018 which is just 2 months from now, Election Commission has not confirmed election dates yet.

However, Karnataka government seems to be in dilemma yet on whether to enjoy power for another 6 months or not. If they agree for proposal, implicitly it will give positive edge for BJP for letting their rival party get additional 6 months of power. Also, it will give BJP more time to recoup in the state. On the other hand, if they go for elections immediately they will get negative remark for not cooperating on “One nation, One election strategy” and wasting more resources and public money. On the other hand, Modi also proves his sincerity for Jamili elections by giving such opportunity for other party ruled states rather than giving extra benefit for BJP ruled states.

Overall, Modi’s multi-pronged strategy puts Congress in a big dilemma. We have to wait and see how Congress reacts.

0

After Yogi Adityanath, the politician turned Swamy and Chief Minister of Utter Pradesh, now it seemed to be the turn of many Swamijis in Karnataka in upcoming elections. While the Bharatiya Janatha Party has already announced 10 Swamijis as its candidates, other political parties including congress has started searches for suitable Swamiji as its candidates. The ongoing circumstances in Karnataka are making it clear that a Yogi will be the future Chief Minister for the state.

Yogi Adityanath was a priest at a temple in Utter Pradesh and later established an Ashram. He entered into politics while continuing his deexa and stepped into parliament later became Chief Minister.

During his recent visit to Karnataka, many Swamijis across the state have been attracted by him and starting raising their voice on establishing good administration with moral values (Dharma Sanstapana).

They are saying that politicians forgot their responsibility and forgot public. Swamijis are criticizing politicians stating that they are ineligible in serving people now and announced that it is the time for their entry into politics.

They are now searching for suitable constituency for contesting the elections.

Even political parties other than BJP like JDU and Congress are also planning to gain the support from public as well as the followers of prominent Swamijis. BJP has announced that as many as 10 Swamijis from Karnataka would contest in upcoming elections. Heads from six mutts in North Karnataka and Coastal districts are seriously trying for BJP’s ticket. Union Minister Anantakumar Hegde is coordinating Party’s high command and Swamijis.

Industry shall speak as one voice soon: Kamal on TN theatre strike

0

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan on Monday said Tamil filmdom will speak with “one voice” on the ongoing cinema theatres shutdown in the state following the government’s decision to levy 30 per cent entertainment tax over the newly implemented GST.

The Goods and Services Tax came into effect from July 1.

Speaking at the launch of a dubbing studio here on Monday, Kamal told the media: “The entire industry is gathering together and we shall speak as one voice soon.”

Theatres across Tamil Nadu have been shutdown from Monday in protest against the double taxation.

On June 30, Abirami Ramanathan, President of the Tamil Nadu Film Chamber of Commerce, said the government should fall in line with the other southern states’ tax slab.

While a Rs 100 ticket in the neighbouring states (Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka) would cost Rs 118 post-GST, it would cost Rs 148 in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the government’s additional 30 per cent state tax on the ticket.

Gali Janardhan Reddy vows to bring BJP to power in Karnataka, Telangana and AP

0

Denying reports that he will contest in the next state assembly elections next year, former BJP minister and beleaguered mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy on Saturday said, “I will not contest any election, but will work hard to bring the BJP back to power, not only in Karnataka, but also in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.”

Mr Reddy, who is out on conditional bail in alleged illegal mining related cases, arrived in Ballari on Wednesday after getting permission from the Supreme Court to celebrate his 25 wedding anniversary in his hometown among friends and supporters. Mr Reddy performed a pooja at the temple of Kanaka Durgamma, the principal deity of the town, with his family members.

After visiting the temple, Mr Reddy told reporters, “The question of contesting elections in 2018, directly or indirectly, does not arise under any circumstances or for any reason. I am a loyal BJP worker and am ready to handle party affairs given an opportunity,” he said.

He said that the BJP is gearing up for assembly elections in Karnataka under the leadership of state party president B.S. Yeddyurappa, and he will work hard to make Mr Yeddyurappa the chief minister after the 2018 elections.

He said, “I want to see Mr Narendra Modi as Prime Minister again after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. For that reason, if possible, I will campaign in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to bring the BJP to power in the two states, where I have my own political strength.”

Sources said that Mr Reddy is likely to play a key role in bringing his alleged business ally and YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy into the NDA fold ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and to bring the BJP to power in the two Telugu states.

Though Mr Reddy ruled out contesting elections, sources said that his friends and followers, who are visiting him in Ballari, are pressurising him to get back into electoral politics.

In turn, he told them that if Bharatiya Janata Party’s top brass gives the green signal, he will consider it, the sources said.

“Mr Reddy wants to come back to active politics and handle party affairs, but it remains to be seen how the central leadership will consider his re-entry into electoral politics ahead of the 2018 polls, since the party lost power to Congress in 2013 over the mining scam where Reddy was kingpin,” a senior BJP leader said.

Telangana raises alarm over Karnataka’s new dam

0

Telangana has raised alarm over the construction of a reservoir across Krishna by Karnataka government near Girijapur, Raichur district.

A fact finding committee appointed by irrigation minister T Harish Rao found enough evidence of the activity related to the construction of a reservoir above the confluence of Krishna and Bhima rivers with an impounding capacity of 2 TMC.
The project will affect the flows into Jurala dam in Mahabubnagar district. According to the fact-finding committee the dam will be of 1170 M length and is being taken up by Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd.

Expressing concern over the Karnataka’s attempt to build a dam, Harish instructed senior officials in the irrigation department to find out from the centre if the project had permission from the central water commission. Harish Rao expressed displeasure that the Karnataka had not fulfilled the requirement of informing the down-stream states about the project.

He also held discussions with Mahabubnagar MP Jitender Reddy on the project.
The reaction of Andhra Pradesh government is not known.
