KTR shocking statement: No information on Metro by Modi

KTR says No information on Metro by Modi

The inauguration of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project on 28th of this month by prime minister Modi has been in news for coupe of days. But KTR almost shocked everyone when he revealed that there is no “official” information from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office to the Telangana state officially yet.

Actually Modi is visiting Hyderabad for Global Entrepreneur Summit in which Ivanka is the chief guest. So, PMO planned Metro inauguration also during the visit. But very surprisingly PMO office didn’t inform this to state government officially. But still Telangana government is preparing for Metro inauguration by Modi as they have information through “other channel”. Actually TS government got the info from Special Protection Group (SPG) ,the armed force of the Union for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India.

This incident shows how callous our bureaucracy is and how, even PMO is also not an exemption for this.

Modi’s take on media

0

At a time when fake news is flooding the media and the people are unable to discern what is real and unreal in the coverage of news and dissemination of knowledge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for credibility needs heed.

Speaking at the 75th anniversary celebrations of Tamil newspaper Daily Thanthi in Chennai on Monday, Modi stressed the importance of language newspapers in reaching out to different sections of people and the need for credibility as people tend to crosscheck what’s shown on the TV and written in newspapers and draw their own conclusions. In other words, what he means is in a multimedia culture, a single source of information has no place. At the same time, he also wanted healthy competition among credible media platforms.

Dwelling at length on editorial freedom, the Prime Minister said it should be used wisely in public interest. Invoking Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said: “Press is called the Fourth Estate. It is definitely a power, but to misuse that power is criminal.”

Giving a piece of his mind on the content, Modi wanted the media to shift its focus from politics-centric coverage to non-political and developmental news that affects a majority of population in the country.

One wonders how a media-shy prime minister has suddenly become media-savvy.

Rahul slams Modi over ‘interference’ in ‘Mersal’

0

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the BJP’s demand for removal of dialogues critical of the GST in Tamil movie “Mersal”, asking him not to “demon-etise Tamil pride” by such interference.

“Mr. Modi, Cinema is a deep expression of Tamil culture and language. Don’t try to demon-etise Tamil pride by interfering in Mersal,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

Gandhi’s attack came after Tamil actor Vijay’s Diwali release “Mersal” came under attack from BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu, one of whom also sought to give a communal twist by raking up the actor’s religion.

The actor has been panned for his dialogues in the film that takes a dig at GST and Digital India. Vijay, who had met Narendra Modi during electioneering ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, had even lauded demonetisation last year.

BJP’s National Secretary H. Raja in a tweet on Friday raked up the actor’s Christian origins.

“Joseph Vijay’s hatred for Modi is ‘Mersal’.”

Referring to the actor’s dialogue in the movie, Raja tweeted that in the last 20 years, 17,500 churches, 9,700 mosques and 370 temples were built. Out of these what should be avoided to build hospitals, Raja posted.

Raja even said “Mersal” shows Vijay’s ignorance in economic matters as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is not a new tax and the tax on liquor is over 58 per cent.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan demanded removal of the dialogues relating to GST, digital payments and temples from the movie as they spread a wrong message.

Earlier on Saturday, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram also attacked the BJP over its demand for removal of dialogues critical of GST in “Mersal”.

“Notice to film makers: Law is coming, you can only make documentaries praising government’s policies,” Chidambaram tweeted.

Eenadu takes a dig at Modi Govt for depriving Special Package to AP

0

Bharatiya Janata Party in an attempt to make profound changes in its strategy towards Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has certainly took some missteps. While Venkaiah Naidu used to defend the saffron party, his exit from real-time politics, the dynamics in Andhra Pradesh towards BJP are changing evident from the Chief Minister’s comments during his Delhi Trip.

The newcomer to the bandwagon of deploring the BJP-led-NDA government is Eenadu. In its Andhra Pradesh Edition on Saturday, the media house which otherwise known to write favorable for BJP and TDP, published a front-page article on how Special package is not being realized. The article also noted that there was no significant progress in the securing loans from foreign banks. Furthermore, it accused the Union government of wasting time by constantly seeking explanations for the proposals sent by the state government. The proposals worth Rs 19,161 crore sent by the state are pending with Central government due to the additional conditions put up by the latter apart from those mention in special package.

The ally TDP gracefully accepted special package despite being denied Special category status. It’s been more than a year since the special package was announced and not a rupee was released to the state which is in financial crisis.

Impugning the saffron party will continue not only by politicians but also by media until the rightful share of the state is delivered.

Why is PM Modi silent on Jay Shah controversy, asks Congress

0

The Congress on Thursday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the allegations of a scam against BJP president Amit Shah’s son, and demanded that Shah step down in order to facilitate a probe.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji at the party state headquarters All India Congress Committee spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi also said that the functioning of Jay Shah co-owned company, Temple Enterprise Pvt. Ltd allegedly mirrored the standard operating procedure of a shell company and must be investigated as part of the Prime Minister’s campaign against shell companies.

“For the sake of probity, for the sake of what Modi stood for. If there is nothing to hide, what stops Amit Shah from stepping down and allowing a probe to happen; a probe which will perhaps clear his son. But we must always remember, Caesar’s wife should be above suspicion,” Chaturvedi told reporters.

“Why is it that the Prime Minister is protecting him? What stops the PM from seeking accountability from a person he is closest to? And someone who perhaps compromises his entire branding of zero tolerance to corruption,” she said.

“Why, when the Prime Minister is saying he is running after the shell companies and shutting down shell companies, isn’t this a standard operating procedure of a shell company and why should not that come under investigation?” she also said, accusing the central government of running away from an investigation.

An online portal alleged that Jay Shah’s company’s turnover grew from Rs 50,000 to Rs 80.5 crore in a 2015-16, within one year, after obtaining an unsecured loan from a non banking financial institution.

Rahman gets on Modi bandwagon, unveils track on demonetisation

0

Music maestro A.R. Rahman on Friday unveiled a 19-minute music piece titled “The flying lotus”, based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi government’s move to demonetise high value currency notes. But he says he’s “not making a judgment” with the piece.

In November last year, Modi announced that the government had decided to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to tackle the menace of black money. It was met with mixed reactions in the country, with major criticism coming from many quarters.

Now Rahman, who had earlier made a reference to demonetisation in his new version of the popular 1994 track “Urvasi Urvasi”, has taken inspiration from it for his latest music piece in collaboration with the Seattle Symphony, one of America’s leading symphony orchestras.

“‘The flying lotus’ is an impression of the rise of India… the whole journey of India. I wanted to do something on what was going on in India during demonetisation and what will happen in the future. It’s open to interpretations,” Rahman told IANS in an interview.

Asked about his collaboration with the Seattle Symphony, the Grammy winner said: “They wanted something… maybe simple. Since I had an inspiration to do this, they were very receptive and encouraging. They loved the idea and found it very innovative. It was a great team” adding “For a composer to get an orchestra like that, is always a dream.”

“The flying lotus” was premiered by the Seattle Symphony with conductor Ricardo Averbach at Celebrate Asia, an annual concert that features music by famous Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Indian composers, in May.

The commission by Rahman was underwritten by artists like Vijay and Sita Vashee, Parul and Gary Houlahan, Vishwa and Vandana Prasad, Noreen and Kabir Shahani, and Satya and Rao Ramala.

The emotionally charged track is interspersed with a few lines from Modi’s speech on demonetisation along with others stressing on “digital economy”, the country going “cashless” and “dhan dhana dhan” (wealth).

What’s his take on demonetisation?

“I think the intention was right. This (the track) is not about me making a judgement. How would I know about something so big? But I know what people are talking about, the Chinese whispers, the good and the bad. That’s what I have put in my piece. It is interesting to have an orchestra and expression like that. The subject is very relevant to every Indian,” he said.

“The music is an optimistic approach and also a journey of what we have been through. I think that’s what it should be. It is not about personal agenda or religion. It is about uplifting the poor. It’s about making our nation the best in the world,” he added.

Prior to its release, Rahman said: “It will be released like a normal release by Universal Music India, but I will send a copy to our PM and important people. I would love to share my work with them.”

Going by the title of track, it seems like he is happy with Bharatiya Janata Party as the ruling party in India.

“I am happy with India…always. I am an Indian,” he said.

After creating a piece on a subject, which is considered to be Modi’s biggest move, would Rahman like to compose for any of the government’s campaigns?

“If I have time, then yes,” said the “Maa tujhe salaam” hitmaker.

Is he inching closer to joining politics?

“No. I don’t have time for it. I want to be in music and movies,” said Rahman, whose A.R. Rahman Encore – The Concert, in association with MTV, will celebrate his 25 years in music.

The event will take place in four Indian cities — New Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Mumbai in November and December.

Modi government’s new sensational scheme

0

Modi’s government is planning to introduce a new and sensational scheme. As per this central governement will give out cash reward of up to Rs one crore to secret informers who provide information to investigative agencies regarding Benami Properties. This scheme will be most likely to be announced in October, 2017.

According the sources, “An informer will get minimum Rs 15 lakh and maximum Rs 1 crore. But the information will have to be precise and accurate. The identity of the informer will be kept secret”. The Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016 came into effect from1st November, 2016. But it doesn’t have any such provision. Seems the government believes that if there is an attractive award prize for informers then atleast some people will inform government about Benami property holders details.

However, it is to be noted that it is not the lack of laws that is the problem in the country but it is the implementation of them is actually the problem. Even though the government assures that information about informers will be kept secret, government has to reward the informers with cash prize through existing bueracracy only. Is there any guarantee that in existing bueracracy no official will reveal this names to other persons either for a bribe or for some sensationalism. People who have information also will still be skeptical about all these developments.

Even though this scheme helps to some extent, but this is definitely not panacea to end all the evils. What India needs is structural changes in the society. Bribery, nepotism, grass rooted corruption need to be eradicated to build a better India.

Don’t believe in vote bank politics, nation comes first: Modi

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday the BJP did not believe in vote bank politics as the country was above party politics.

On the second day of his visit to his Varanasi parliamentary constituency, Modi told a gathering that he had launched a major war against corruption and the corrupt to ease the life of the common man. He also said cleanliness was worship for him as it could rid the poor of various diseases and a lot of economic burden.

“Governance for us is not about votes or winning elections. The priority is the development of the nation. For us, the country is bigger than party,” he said, in his address to farmers in Shahanshahpur on the outskirts of Varanasi.

He said most of the problems faced by the common people in India were rooted in corruption.

“I have launched a war against it and will take it further to ensure that graft is weeded out from the country.”

The Prime Minister urged the people to also ensure that the mission for cleanliness gets their support.

He said it was his good fortune to lay the foundation stone of a public toilet in Shahanshahpur village “because sanitation is also a kind of worship for me.

“It will rid the poor of my country of various diseases and the economic burden due to those diseases that result from dirty surroundings. Hundreds of diseases come knocking at your doorsteps because of lack of hygiene,” Modi said.

He quoted a Unicef report that each household in India which does not have a toilet spend around Rs 50,000 a year on treatment for different ailments.

“It is the responsibility of every citizen and every family to keep their surroundings clean so we are able to build clean villages, clean cities and a clean nation,” Modi said.

The prime minister urged the people to take cleanliness not only as a mission but also turn into a habit for everyone.

Referring to his government’s housing scheme, Modi said he wanted every one in the country to have a roof over their head when in 2022 India completes 75 years of independence.

He said he realized that it was an onerous task but he would be the man doing it. “I know it is difficult. But if Modi cannot do the difficult job who else will.”

He added that those homes – crores in number – would need bricks, cement, iron and wood, and would create several employment opportunities.

He also lauded the UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath for his work for welfare of cattle and said in the past no one paid attention to them as they are not able to vote.

He also informed the gathering that small initiatives like switching of Varanasi street lights to LED bulbs had saved Rs 13 crore in electricity bill for the municipal corporation.

Modi added the government’s resolution was to double the farmer’s income.

Earlier the prime minister inaugurated a cattle fair – Pashudhan Aarogya Mela.

PM’s letters to celebrities. Why Modi skipped Pawan?

0

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s favourite program ‘Clean India’ campaign completes three years, he has written letters renowned people across the fields like sports and cinema. He sought their support for the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ program. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, was originally launched in 2nd October 2014 to promote cleanliness and sanitation.Last week President Ram Nath Kovind launched the nationwide ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ campaign to reignite the cleanliness movement by mobilising people support in the fortnight to October 2.

Many celebrities across the country received personalized letters from Prime minister Modi. Asking these celebrities to pledge towards cleanliness in the letter, the Prime Minister said in the days leading up to Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, “we can encourage widespread support for and participation in cleanliness initiatives across India” . Among those who received letters from PM are Telugu celebrities like Mahesh Babu, Prabhas,Mohan Babu and director Rajamauli.

But it is somewhat surprising to see Pawan Kalyan didnt receive any such letter from PMO. Especially considering the fact that Pawan has not only given his wholehearted support to Modi’s candidacy for PM post in 2014 elections but also campaigned for NDA’s candidates. It may indicate one of the two things – Modi might have skipped Pawan as he is into full time politics now and Modi sent letters to those opinion makers who are not directly affiliated to some political party. Secondly, this may indicate the widening gap between BJP and Janasena as Pawan Kalyan targetted BJP for not granting Special Category Status to AP as promised by Modi. But it is too early to draw conclusions on this assumption.

Anyway let’s hope ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ campaign a grand success in bringing awareness on cleanliness among people.

Cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, new faces likely

0

At least 10 new faces could be inducted into the Union Council of Ministers on Sunday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertakes an expansion and reshuffle of his ministry, said to be crucial ahead of assembly elections in some states and the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The swearing-in ceremony has been fixed for 10.30 a.m. at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, a slight change from 10 a.m. that was originally planned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with BJP chief Amit Shah late in the evening to give finishing touches to the exercise.

Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also met Modi. He refused to comment on speculation that he was being shifted to railways, saying it was the Prime Minister’s prerogative to induct and drop ministers.

Though there has been no official word on the changes that are likely, there is speculation that the Prime Minister could appoint a Defence Minister since the portfolio has been with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as additional charge.

Three Ministers — Rajiv Pratap Rudy (Skill Development), Kalraj Mishra (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises) and Sanjeev Balyan (Water Resources) — have already resigned and about a half-a-dozen are believed to have offered to resign.

Apart from naming a new Defence Minister, Modi could shift Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to some other ministry like environment while possibly dropping Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh whose performance is said to be lacklustre. Prabhu had offered to resign late last month after two back-to-back train derailments, including in Muzaffarnagar in which over 20 people lost their lives.

Manoj Sinha, Minister of State in Railways, is being tipped to be promoted as the Railway Minister. Like Sinha, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan are likely to promoted as cabinet ministers in their portfolios. Pradhan had a meeting with Shah in the evening, like Delhi MP Pravesh Verma, who was also called.

Some reshuffle of the portfolios are likely with ministers, including Narendra Singh Tomar and Smriti Irani, holding additional charges. Tomar, who is Rural Development Minister, holds additional charge of Urban Development while Textiles Minister Irani holds additional charge of Information and Broadcasting.

With elections approaching in Himachal Pradesh, Health Minister J.P. Nadda may be shifted to the state, and be projected as a chief ministerial candidate.

The new faces likely to join the union government include Bhupendra Yadav or O.P. Mathur (both Rajya Sabha members from Rajasthan), Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, (Rajya Sabha member from Madhya Pradesh) and Satyapal Singh, Prahlad Patel, Nishikant Dubey and Pravesh Verma (all Lok Sabha).

Some election-bound states, including Congress-ruled Karnataka, could get greater representation in the Council of Ministers. Prahlad Joshi and Suresh Angadi, both MPs from Karnataka, could make a debut at the Centre. Likewise, Anurag Thakur, Lok Sabha member from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, could get the nod. Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections are due later this year, while Karnataka Assembly polls are slated for next year.

Ally Shiv Sena may get one more berth with Anil Desai, a Rajya Sabha member, making the grade. However, the other new ally AIADMK, about which much has been speculated, is unlikely to get berths for now in view of the fact that the party is undergoing a period of crisis.

The reshuffle is mostly likely to see the entry of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) nominees into the ministry but party President and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar kept the suspense up, saying no proposal has yet come to him for inclusion in the union cabinet. If the party gets a call, Rajya Sabha MP R.C.P. Singh and Lok Sabha member from Purnea, Santosh Kumar, are likely to be inducted.

Kalraj Mishra, 77, claimed that he was not being dropped as Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises because of performance but on grounds of age.

BJP plays the caste card knowing it won’t get the Muslim vote

0

When the Supreme Court excluded the “creamy layer”, or the well-off sections, among the backward castes from the benefits of reservations in its 1991 judgement, it had taken a logical step to ensure that the advantages of the quota system in the matter of social advancement were not enjoyed in perpetuity by the identified communities.

What the judicial pronouncement entailed was that once those who had suffered for centuries from the inequities of the caste system had been able to overcome much of their social disabilities via the officially sponsored affirmative action, they would lose their right for preferential treatment. The criterion for those who would be excluded from the benefits of the quota system was an annual income of Rs 100,000.

However, while deciding on the concept of the “creamy layer”, the judiciary does not seem to have taken into account the possibility of the intervention of the political class to circumvent the legal objective.

Over the years, the politicians across the board have succeeded in dodging the income limit by periodically increasing the quantum of the annual earnings of the backward castes from Rs 100,000 in 1993 to Rs 250,000 in 2004 to Rs 450,000 in 2008 to Rs 600,000 in 2013.

Clearly, to the political class, the creamy layer is an elastic concept which can keep on expanding with the express purpose of retaining within its fold even the affluent among the backward castes in order to make them eligible for reservations in employment and education.

Considering that the reservations were meant to be in force for only the first 10 years after Independence, there is little doubt that the present practice is a travesty of the original intent. As much is evident from the contention of the now-defunct National Commission for Backward Castes that the annual income should be Rs 15 lakh.

It not surprising, therefore, that the Narendra Modi government has decided to increase the annual income from the present Rs 600,000 to Rs 800,000. There will be no prizes for guessing that the amount will keep on increasing year after year and that being a part of the creamy layer will be an ever-receding goal for the backward castes.

By this token, no matter how high is the income of a backward caste person, he will always be poor in the government’s eyes — though not to his neighbours — and in need of clutches for securing jobs and education.

The reason for this oddity is the political need to secure votes even if the grant of such largesse means ignoring the concept of merit. However, it also boosts the caste system which is often deemed to be the bane of the Hindu social order.

The belief among the idealists at the dawn of Independence that the caste system will gradually wither away with the nation’s progress has proved to be a chimera.

As if to confirm this regressive trend, the Modi government is now contemplating identifying various sub-castes among the backwards for extending the benefits of reservations on the ground that the quotas have mostly been grabbed by the more dominant castes, such as the Yadavs in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

This slicing of the cake is an extension of the electoral policy which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully pursued in Uttar Pradesh by courting the non-Yadav backward castes and the non-Jatav Dalits to wean them away from the Yadav-dominated Samajwadi Party and the Jatav-dominated Bahujan Samaj Party.

Ironically, it was to counter the caste card played by the Janata Dal leader and Prime Minister V.P. Singh in 1990 that BJP leader L.K. Advani embarked on his Somnath-to-Ayodhya rath yatra to keep the party’s Hindu flock together.

Today, however, the BJP is playing the caste card with a vengeance to boost its political position. Its motivation is possibly all the stronger because of the knowledge that it will not get the Muslim vote. So, it has to try all the more to rope in the backward castes and add them to its tally of upper caste votes which the party believes are already in its bag.

In the process of wooing the backward castes, not only the age-old “varna vyavastha” or the caste system but also the concept of reservations is strengthened.

To make matters worse, since the number of government jobs is dwindling in a time of the free market, voices are bound to be raised for extending the quota system to the private sector, thereby ringing its death-knell where efficiency is concerned.

As these retrogressive steps are advocated and implemented, the “sabka vikas” or the agenda of development for all is bound to be hit.

Moreover, the calls that are sometimes given for dispensing with quotas, as by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief, Mohan Bhagwat, are likely to be ignored. For those who see Hindu society through the lens of caste, all will be well in the foreseeable future.

Prabhu offers to quit after train derails, PM asks him to wait

0

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered to resign “taking full responsibility” for train accidents and said Modi had asked him to “wait”.

Hours after a second train derailed in four days, Prabhu called on the Prime Minister “taking full responsibility” for the state of affairs. “PM has asked me to wait,” he tweeted.

On Saturday, the Kalinga Utkal Express derailed in Muzaffarnagar district leaving 22 people dead. Even as the railways cracked down on errant officials and staff, the Kaifiyat Express derailed in Auraiya district on Wednesday injuring 74 people. Both accidents took place in Uttar Pradesh.

Though Prabhu did not specifically mention that he had offered to resign, there has been intense speculation that he may have offered to resign considering the language of his tweets.

Railway Board Chairman A.K. Mittal has also offered to resign in the wake of the accidents. But there was no confirmation if Mittal has quit.

“I am extremely pained by the unfortunate accidents, injuries to passengers and loss of precious lives. It has caused me deep anguish,” the Railway Minister said.

“New India envisioned by PM deserves a Railways which is efficient and modern. I promise that is the path, on which Railways is progressing now.”

Prabhu said that he had tried to overcome “decades of neglect through systemic reforms in all areas leading to unprecedented investment and milestones”.

He said in less than three years as Minister, “I have devoted my blood and sweat for the betterment of the Railways”.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, 64-year-old Prabhu — formerly in the Shiv Sena — joined the BJP in May 2014 before he was inducted into the cabinet as the Railway Minister.

After the Saturday accident involving the Kalinga Utkal Express, the Congress said that since the Modi government took power in 2014, 259 passengers had died and 899 had been injured in 27 rail accidents.

An initial probe into the Kalinga Utkal Express tragedy found that the accident was caused due to negligence by railway staff.

Government going soft in terror cases: Owaisi

0

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday accused the Modi government of “going soft” on terror cases after the Supreme Court granted bail to former Lt. Col. Prasad Shrikant Purohit, the main accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts.

Owaisi said a terror accused like Purohit should not be “glorified as is being attempted by some people”.

“There is a pattern in such cases (involving alleged Hindutva terrorists) ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has come to power. The government is not appealing against the bails and acquittals. Is it going soft in such cases?” Owaisi asked on India Today TV.

“Also, public prosecutor Rohini Saliyan has alleged that she was being pressurised by the NIA (National Investigation Agency) officers to dilute the case,” he said.

Seven persons were killed in an explosion in Malegaon in Nashik district in Maharashtra on September 29, 2008.

The investigating agencies had earlier attributed the blast to Abhinav Bharat.

On April 25, the Bombay High Court had granted bail to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, accused in the same case, while it rejected Purohit’s bail.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh said Purohit’s bail was “expected” as the Modi government was “protecting all the accused connected with RSS”.

The Congress leader also cast aspersion over the NIA’s neutrality in the case.

“The NIA chief has been given two extensions to ensure their acquittal. He may now be further rewarded for a suitable post retirement position,” he added.

Will Modi opt for early general election?

0

The synchronisation of the next general election with the assembly polls of 2018 to set a pattern may not be the only reason why the Narendra Modi government is said to be considering bringing forward the 2019 general election by a year.

While the need to evolve a system where the major elections are held simultaneously has been talked about for some time, the present conjecture relates mainly to the calculations about the prospects of the ruling party at the Centre. The belief seemingly is that it will be better for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to cash in on whatever gains it has made in the last three-and-a-half-years rather than wait for another 20 months or so when its inadequacies on the employment front and in relieving the distress of farmers may become more apparent.

It will serve the party better, therefore, to advance the dates of the general election when the Modi magic hasn’t quite faded as a recent opinion poll has shown and the opposition continues to be in disarray.

Although the government cannot but derive considerable satisfaction from the opposition’s discomfiture, it cannot be unaware of the fact that it still has pockets of influence as is evident from the marginal improvement in the Congress’s position in the recent Madhya Pradesh local elections and the Trinamool Congress’s sweeping victories in the West Bengal municipal polls.

The BJP also knows that it has to guard against the anti-incumbency factor affecting the party’s prospects in the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat next year. Even if it wins, a loss of seats compared to the previous elections can be disheartening on the eve of the general election if it is held in 2019. It will also be demoralising for the BJP if the Congress wins in Karnataka and the CPI-M in Tripura. Holding the general election earlier will enable the BJP to avoid such uncomfortable possibilities.

What the BJP will have to remember is that people often vote against the ruling party because of dissatisfaction with its performance even if the opponent is weak. This happened in Goa and Manipur, where the Congress was the first party before it lost this position because of the BJP’s success in weaning away a number of legislators. However, such defections could not hide the fact that there was dissatisfaction with the BJP.

The same disenchantment has also been voiced by a fairly wide section of the people in recent weeks as can be seen from the protest letters written to the Prime Minister by retired bureaucrats and army veterans and the processions taken out by scientists about the encouragement of obscurantist practices by the ruling dispensation.

These grievances have nothing to do with unemployment and farmers’ distress which are undoubtedly the two most serious problems faced by the government. Instead, these are the grouses of the average middle-class householders who have been feeling uneasy about the growing climate of intolerance although it probably does not affect them in a personal capacity.

Even then, the depredations of the gau rakshaks, along with the possibility of the police entering private homes to check whether anyone is eating beef, as the Maharashtra government wants to do, the competitive jingoism in TV channels, the foul language used by the BJP’s supporters against the party’s opponents in the social media, the distortion of history, including the blanking out of Jawaharal Nehru’s name from the speeches of high dignitaries, are some of the trends which can cause unease among the common people.

No one can predict the cumulative effect of these feelings over the next two years, along with the slowing down of the economy which is a prime cause of the unemployment problem.

Although early general elections can enable the government to make hay while the sun is still shining, albeit faintly, it is only a temporary palliative. As of now, a more longstanding solution of the current ills is not visible. As a result, the BJP has to continue to depend on the faith which the average person still places in the Prime Minister’s ability to tide over the difficult situations through hard work.

The government is also fortunate that it hasn’t had to face the kind of corruption charges which brought down its predecessor and still hobbles many of the opposition parties. At the same time, it is obvious that the expectations of rapid economic advancement which are behind Modi’s success have been largely belied. No wonder the “achhey din” phrase is not heard any more.

The BJP’s other problem is its total dependence on Modi, which is not unlike what it was in the Congress in Indira Gandhi’s heyday. It is a scenario which is not politically healthy for a party, as can be seen from the Congress’s present plight when it is pathetically dependent on the dynasty despite its fading charisma. The BJP, on its part, has to capitalise on Modi’s popularity as long as it brings in the votes. Hence, the need for the general election next year.

Modi’s inclusive call: Need for religious leaders to build bridges

0

As India celebrates its 71st Independence Day, it must remember the sacrifices made by leaders of the freedom movement. It was their vision, idealism, commitment to democracy, secularism and pluralism that made India an exceptional nation in the world.

India’s commitment to secularism and rule of law is unmatched and unparalleled. But, unfortunately, over the past several months, violent acts carried out by some members of right-wing groups posing themselves as cow vigilantes have resulted in the death of more than 20 people.

Any type of violence that is grounded in hatred, bigotry, harassment, misunderstanding and ignorance does not represent the character and conscience of a country that has been a shining symbol of democracy, diversity and secularism around the globe. The violence and polarisation are contrary to the nation’s values. This type of intolerant and ugly behaviour by some individuals is against India’s traditions and commitment to communal peace and harmony. It must be confronted both for the sake of the good Hindu and Muslim citizens of India and the distinctive and honourable multi-hued reputation of the state itself.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken out against the spate of violence against Muslims. He reminded the country of his call of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (with everyone, for everyone). Some may think this call will not be answered. I believe it will, because many of India’s greatest leaders have in the past stressed building community through collaboration and cooperation.

For example, consider the teachings of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, founder of the famous Banaras Hindu University. He was a visionary who saw the world not though religious blinders but through an expansive view of what strong and inclusive faiths can do to unite rather than divide us.

Malaviya declared: “India is not a country of the Hindus only. It is a country of the Muslims, the Christians and the Parsees too. The country can gain strength and develop itself only when the people of India live in mutual goodwill and harmony.” Taking a lesson from him, in order to create an atmosphere of communal peace and harmony, we need to discover our “spiritual common ground”.

That is because spirituality transcends religious, racial and regional boundaries. Spirit is the invisible force that brings us together regardless of our particular predispositions.

Religious leaders are in a unique position to build bridges, to break down the barriers, to promote dialogue of understanding, and to forge stronger bonds among different faiths. This can be accomplished by bringing followers of different persuasions to have open discussions on controversial topics or issues of importance. These conversations can make and reinforce the point that an attack on one religion is an attack on all religions. When we attack each other, it tears India’s harmonious fabric.

Political leaders have the responsibility to ensure that all laws are fair and enforced uniformly. As importantly, they can take affirmative actions to promote an atmosphere of communal peace and harmony. They need to develop a plan of what can be done to strengthen those bonds that bind all Indians as one family. They need to promote the voice for understanding, cooperation, and civility among faiths.

Citizen leaders must come from all fields — business, education, health care, to name just a few. They can lead by example, by sponsoring events and investing in plans and programmes that cut across and eliminate racial, religious and socio-economic divides. They can play a vital role in defusing tensions and helping our youth understand the need for collaboration and communication. They can play a pivotal role by promoting the unique benefits of unity by articulating the idea that “We are stronger together”. And, together, they can help shape a better future for India.

As citizens of the world’s largest democracy, it is appropriate for Indians of all faiths to come together and redouble efforts to reject violence in all forms and to promote civility. Indians should commit themselves to promote dialogue of understanding and a shared sense of community in the spirit of Modi’s call: “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”

PM calls for corruption and poverty free India by 2022

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called for an India devoid of corruption and poverty by 2022 when the country marks 75 years of independence.

Participating in a special discussion to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement, Modi said the coming five years could be as decisive as it was between 1942 and 1947 when the country got independence.

He said in the present world, India could again emerge as an inspiration.

In the nearly 40-minute speech, Modi recalled the role played by Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev, Jayaprakash Narayan and others.

The Prime Minister made no mention of Jawaharlal Nehru.

“When Mahatma Gandhi, a leader who always propagated non-violence, raised the call to ‘Do or Die’, it was a surprise for the nation. He told each and all of us to consider ourselves as independent nationals,” Modi said.

“From 2017 to 2022, when India turns 75, we need to create the same spirit that existed from 1942 to 1947.”

Modi urged people to take a pledge to end corruption, poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy besides ensuring gender equality.

“We need to bring a positive change in this regard. Today, a similar call (like Gandhi made in 1942) and determination are needed to weed out corruption from our country,” Modi said, adding a lot can be achieved with the determination of collective conscience.

Modi said a sense of entitlement had increased in the country but the sense of duty had depleted.

“People break law and do not feel they are doing something wrong,” he said. He called for changing this attitude.

The Prime Minister said the Indian independence struggle was an inspiration for many countries suffering from colonial rule.

“British colonialism started in India and ended in India. India’s independence was not just India’s independence. It spread the urge to get independence in many countries,” he said.
