Uttam’s wife may out from the ring!

0

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Chief Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy’s wife Ms. Padmavati, who is sitting MLA from Kodada segment, may not contest in assembly polls due to many reasons.

Sources from Mahakutami told ‘Telugu 360’ that the Telangana TDP is seeking the segment under the alliance of Mahakutami as it was a stronghold to the party since 80’s. Ms. Padmavati won last election against TDP candidate Mr. Bollam Mallaiah Yadav, who is a strong leader in TDP-TS, with a difference of 13,374 votes and entered into the assembly along with her husband Mr. Uttam, who is representing from Huzurnagar segment. In order to reach the goal for Mahakutami that is to defeat TRS, Uttam’s family may scarify Kodada, the sources added.

If Uttam’s family opposes the decision of leaving the seat to TDP, there are chances of the congress high command’s condition imposed in these elections that provides a ticket per family. With this equation, Uttam’s family must scarify one seat. Meanwhile, few others including Mr. Janareddy and his son Ragu Vir Reddy, Ex MP Mr. Anjan Kumar Yadav and his son Mr. Anil Kumar Yadav, Ex-minister Ms. Sabitha Reddy and her son Mr. Patolla Karthik Reddy, Recently joined sitting MLA from Parakala Ms. Konda Surekha and her husband Mr. Konda Murali should also bind to one ticket rule.

No name change for Deepika’s character in Padmavati

Deepika’s character in Padmavati

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati has been occupied with a series of controversies because of which the release of the film has been kept on hold. Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are the lead actors in the movie. The film after a huge delay completed all the censor formalities and the film has been passed with possible cuts and a change in the film’s title to Padmavat.

However Deepika Padukone who will be playing the title role as Rani Padmavati will not have any name change in the film. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is quite unhappy with the changes suggested by the censor board and is in plans to approach the Examining Committee of the Censor Board. The movie unit will take a call on the release date once the Revising Committee reveals out their decision.

Want complete ban on ‘Padmavati’, will vandalise theatres, warns Karni Sena

0

Unimpressed by the Censor Board’s decision to seek modifications and change the name to “Padmavat”, the Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena on Saturday demanded a complete ban on the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film and threatened to vandalise theatres screening it.

“We will station our people outside cinema theatres and each hall showing the film will be vandalised,” declared Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, president Shree Rajput Karni Sena, at a press conference here.

He said that despite objections from the review committee members, the Censor Board had taken the decision to screen the film “because of underworld pressure”.

“If there is any loss of property following the release of the film, the government would be responsible,” he warned.

The Karni Sena’s stand comes as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to give a U/A certificate “along with some modifications” to “Padmavati” and has asked the filmmaker to “likely” change the movie’s title to “Padmavat”.

“If the government really wants to change the name of the film, let it name the movie as ‘Gaddar Allaudin Khilji’ and all scenes related to Padmavati should be removed from it,” Yogendra Singh Katar, Vice President, Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, told IANS.

“We will not allow the film to be released in any case,” he said, adding, “If it is released, we will follow the principle of Rajputs to sacrifice our lives for the sake of our honour.”

A review committee was formed recently with six members. The CBFC has included Sriji Arvind Singh Mewar as one of its members. However, Karni Sena members claim that the real family members of Queen Padmavati of Chittor were Mahendra Singh Mewar, and have demanded that he or his son Vishvaraj Singh Mewar should be members of the committee.

“Let the committee members include Mahendra Singh Mewar and let him decide what he has to say. Even if he agrees for the release of the film, we will demand naming of the film as ‘Gaddar Aladdin Khilji’,” Katar told IANS.

Bhanwar Uday Singh Bhati, Alwar city president and a member of the same association, also demanded a ban on the film. “The way Bhansali is taking up the issue, it seems, is all for promotion of the movie,” Bhati told IANS.

He added that Rajputs have been “disciplined” in staging peaceful protests over the years and “hence our patience should not be tested”.

Asked what he had to say to the CBFC decision of releasing the film with suggested cuts and a name change, Bhati said “We just don’t want the film to be screened anywhere”.

“How can they show the queen dancing with other women without ghoonghat. This has never been our culture,” he said, adding “Even today, our women go out in ghoonghat (veils).”

“Rajputs have contributed a lot to this nation. However, the movie always shows them in poor light and never shows their story of valour, which is a shame. We expect a lot from our Rajput leaders who should come forward and help us in getting this movie banned. We don’t want vote bank politics on the film,” he said.

Katar added: “We will not allow the film to be released at any cost. We have strong backing of all Hindu Associations from across the country who just don’t want this movie to be released at all.”

“Padmavati”, which was earlier slated for release on December 1, got embroiled in controversy after the Karni Sena, an organisation of the Rajput community, urged a nationwide ban on the film claiming that it “distorts historical facts”. Members of the political organisation also physically assaulted Bhansali during the film’s shooting in Jaipur earlier this year. They even burnt the sets of the movie on the outskirts of Mumbai.

The row took an ugly turn when threats were issued against Bhansali and Deepika.

CBFC seeks several cuts, change in name for certifying ‘Padmavati’

0

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has decided to give a U/A certificate “along with some modifications” to Sanjay Leela Bhansalis controversial film “Padmavati” and has asked the filmmaker to “likely” change the movie’s title to “Padmavat”.

The film was also asked to give a few disclaimers — one of them regarding not glorifying the practice of Sati and also relevant modifications in the song “Ghoomar” to befit the character portrayed, a CBFC statement said.

The decision was taken after an examining committee meeting was held on Thursday in presence of CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi. The special panel consisted of Arvind Singh from Udaipur, Dr Chandramani Singh and professor K.K. Singh of Jaipur University.

According to the CBFC, the film was approached with a “balanced view keeping in mind both the filmmakers and the society”. The board asked for several cuts, and a name change, before giving the film the certification for showing in theatres in India. According to some reports, 26 cuts were ordered.

Considering the complexities and concerns around the film, the requirement for a special panel was felt by CBFC “to add perspective to the final decision of the official committee,” the CBFC said.

The final 3D application of the film was submitted to CBFC on Thursday (December 28).

The certificate will be issued once the required modifications are carried out and final material submitted, the board said.

“Padmavati”, which was earlier slated for release on December 1, got embroiled into controversies after the Karni Sena, an organisation of the Rajput community, urged a nationwide ban on the film claiming that it “distorts historical facts”.

Members of the political organisation also physically assaulted Bhansali during the film’s shooting in Jaipur earlier this year. They even burnt the sets of the movie in outskirts of Mumbai.

Later on, Bhansali appeared before a Parliamentary committee and maintained that the row over the yet-to-be released movie was just based on rumours, strongly rejecting charges that he had distorted “historical” facts about the possibly mythological Rajput queen, played by Deepika Padukone in the film.

The row took an ugly turn when threats were issued against Bhansali and Deepika.

“Padmavati” also features Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.

Shocker: Padmavati will not hit the screens before March?

Padmavati will not hit the screens before March

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati has been occupied with controversies and the release of the film has been kept on hold. The film has been initially planned to release on December 1st but the protests across the country left the makers puzzled. With no choice, the makers decided to postpone the film. Along with these, Padmavati has been facing the heat from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The film’s censor scrutiny has been kept on hold in November citing incomplete application. The latest news is that the makers of Padmavati in the application to the CBFC stated that it is partially based on the historic facts. Now the Censor Board will scrutinize the content to check the authenticity. This is a long process and Padmavati is expected to get the censor certificate only in January if things go smooth. Over 40 films are currently in line for censor scrutiny in the coming days and Padmavati should have to wait in the queue.

The promotions of the film are yet to be kick-started and with a mad rush of films lined up in Bollywood, the makers are keen on releasing the film in March informed a source from the movie unit. As of now, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his team are praying for a smooth censor scrutiny. Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh played the lead roles in Padmavati.

Prabhas smartly dodges to react on ‘Padmavati’ controversy

0

With the nationwide popularity he earned after Baahubali, Tollywood actor Prabhas would easily draw media attention on whatever issue he reacts on. The macho star, who is known for his reticent attitude during public appearances, was asked to react on the ‘Padmavati’ controversy which is now the hot topic all over the country.

Going into the news, Prabhas was forced by media to speak out his opinion on the controversies that have engulfed Bollywood period drama Padmavati, which stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. However, Prabhas has smartly refused to react on the issue.

Sources say that Prabhas was advised by his well wishers not to speak about sensitive matters which might land him in troubled waters. As taking either side of the issue might damage Prabhas’ image and popularity, he decided to stay neutral and dodged the issue smartly. Also, it is learnt that Prabhas’ uncle and actor Krishnam Raju cautioned him not to express his personal opinion on such issues.

On the work front, Prabhas is busy shooting for his upcoming multilingual actioner Saaho.

‘Padmavati’ row: Naidu says no right to take law in hands, nor hurt sentiments

0

Amid a raging row over “Padmavati”, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said that nobody has the right to take law into their hands, but at the same time nobody has the right to hurt others sentiments.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Times Litfest, Naidu emphasised that inciting violence or unlawful activities as a way of protest such as announcing bounty on some people’s heads was “unacceptable”.

“Now this new problem has come related to some film. Some people feel that it is hurting the sentiments of this community or that community and then they protest. Some of them go out of the way and announce rewards. This is not acceptable,” he said, without naming anyone.

“You have a right to protest in a democratic manner. Go to appropriate authorities and complain to them. Take the recourse in a democratic way but you cannot physically obstruct. And you cannot give violent threats,” he said.

“You don’t have a right to take law into your hands. At the same time you don’t have the right to hurt the sentiments of others. That is a reality,” he said, adding that some people are quite “selective” in their criticism.

He said respecting others’ sentiments and feelings is the “essence of our culture”.

A controversy has been raging over Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama “Padmavati” with several organisations, mainly from the Rajput community, opposing release of the movie on the grounds it “distorts history”. Fringe elements have also announced rewards on the heads of actress Deepika Padukone and film director Bhansali.

The Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor starrer was scheduled to be released on December 1, but it has now been deferred.

Referring to an article in a newspaper, Naidu said in the past too films have faced bans and obstructions and mentioned “Aandhi” and “Garam Hava” as some examples.

“Aandhi” (1975) whose protagonist had striking similarities with the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was banned after 26 weeks of release. “Garam Hava” was held up by the censor board for eight months.”

Speaking on Parliamentary democracy, Naidu said that it was not important as to how many days Parliament meets, the important thing was for how many days “it functions”.

Naidu said people have a right to disagree but first they “must learn to respect the majority and the people’s mandate”.

Naidu also said that while dissent was agreeable, “disintegration is not acceptable”.

“That is the bottom line and any attempt to undermine integrity and unity of India by forces inimical to growth of India must be nipped in the bud,” he said in reference to last year’ Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) controversy.

‘Padmavati’: Body of man found hanging on Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur

0

The body of a 40-year-old man was found hanging from the outer walls of Nahargarh Fort here on Friday morning, with the message “‘Padmavati’ ka virodh” – in protest against the film “Padmavati”.

The message, written on the stones near the fort wall adjacent to the body, read, “Hum putle nahin jalate….latkate hain” (we don’t burn effigies, we hang them).

“It is early to comment on it as the matter is under investigation. The identity of the man, around 40-years-old, is yet to be ascertained,” Satyendra Singh, DCP Jaipur (North), told IANS.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati” has been mired in controversies since its shooting started. Activists of the Karni Sena, a Rajput community, besides other groups have been protesting against the movie, claiming the film “distorts” historical facts.

“They are trying to defame queen Padmavati by distorting historical facts. It is not acceptable,” an activist of the Karni Sena said.

Activists of the Karni Sena earlier this month vandalised a theatre in Kota, Rajasthan, over reports that it was showing a trailer of “Padmavati”. A Karni Sena leader threatened actress Deepika Padukone, who plays the lead in the movie, with physical harm.

The release of the movie, earlier scheduled for December 1, has been deferred.

Respect Deepika’s freedom: Kamal Haasan

0

Tamil film actor Kamal Haasan stands in support of “Padmavati” actress Deepika Padukone and says he respects the actress’ freedom. He also urged “cerebral India” to wake up.

“I want Deepika’s head.. saved. Respect it more than her body. Even more her freedom. Do not deny her that. Many communities have opposed my films. Extremism in any debate is deplorable.

“Wake up cerebral India. Time to think. We’ve said enough. Listen Ma Bharat,” Kamal tweeted on Monday night.

A reward of Rs 10-crore was announced for beheading filmmaker Sanajy Leela Bhansali and Deepika over their film “Padmavati”.

Kunwar Surajpal Singh Ammu, a ruling BJP leader in Haryana, on Monday said he firmly stands by his announcement of Rs 10-crore reward for beheading the two.

Ammu, chief media coordinator of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state, said he gave the statement as a “Rajput” and not as an office-bearer of the party.

Ammu said he had doubled the bounty on the heads of Deepika and Bhansali to Rs 10 crore. Ammu also issued a threat to break the legs of actor Ranveer Singh.

Shri Rajput Karni Sena, an organisation of the Rajput community, has been protesting against “Padmavati” for the last few months and now they want a ban on the film.

In “Padmavati”, Ranveer essays the role of Alauddin Khilji, the Delhi Sultan obsessed with legendary 13th century queen of Chittor Rani Padmavati essayed by Deepika.

Amid ‘Padmavati’ row, Deepika pulls out of GES

0

Actress Deepika Padukone, who is at the centre of a row over “Padmavati”, has pulled out of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), that will have US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and Prime Minister Narendra Modi attend the inauguration on November 28.

A senior official of the Telangana government said on Monday that Deepika has declined to attend the event.

The actress was expected to speak at a session on ‘Hollywood to Nollywood to Bollywood: The Path to Moviemaking’ on November 29.

“Earlier Deepika Padukona was expected to be in that session but now she has declined,” said Jayesh Ranjan, Secretary, Information Technology, Government of Telangana.

He, however, said the reason for her decision is not known.

The official was explaining to media persons that the list of speakers is yet to be finalised as there have been several changes.

Deepika’s move comes amid a raging row over “Padmavati”, which was scheduled to be released on December 1.

Protest by Rajput groups forced the producer to defer the release.

Some leaders of BJP and right-wing groups have threatened the actress and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Few have even announced rewards for killing them.

A leader of Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasbha (ABKMS) has announced a reward of Rs 1 crore for “burning the actress alive”.

Deepika plays the role of a Rajput queen in the movie. Some Rajput groups allege that Bhansali has distorted history and portrayed the queen in poor light.

Being co-hosted by the US and India, the GES, with the theme ‘Women First, Prosperity for All’, will bring together 1,500 entrepreneurs, investors, and ecosystem supporters from around the world for two-and-a-half days of training and mentoring.

US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the inaugural session on November 28.

Padmavati Controversy: Are we living in a Jungle Raj?

Are we living in a Jungle Raj or a secular democratic country is the question being raised by concerned and law-abiding people after a BJP leader raised the bounty on the heads of film producer-director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone, the lead actor in his film Padmavati.

Surajpal Amu, the saffron party’s Haryana leader and chief media coordinator, added more fuel to the raging controversy over Bhansali’s magnum opus on Sunday by announcing that he would offer Rs 10 crores – double the amount offered by Meerut-based Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Yuva Mahasabha chief Thakur Abhishek Som. Amu did not stop at that; he took warnings to new levels, threatening “to break the legs” of Ranveer Singh, who played Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji.

The film’s release which is slated for December 1 has already been postponed amidst unabated threats and warnings to theatre owners and raging protests from north to south over ‘distortion of historical facts’ in the period film. Then why political leaders who are nothing to do with cinema are turning a film into a national issue and keeping the cauldron boiling? Is it, as Shabana Azmi says, for electoral gains?

Whatever the motive is, if BJP governments in states and at the Centre allow their cadre to unleash terror in the form of life threats, maiming or breaking limbs, now or later will face the backlash. If these leaders are not reined in by party bosses, the situation will be akin to the rule of Taliban or Islamic State.

Words may not be translated into action. But they are capable of inciting mobs to go on rampage. Over the years, films have become favourite means to achieve certain ends in the hands of a few organizations and individuals – now political leaders — for whom the freedom of creativity and expression has little meaning. While there is a need to address the aggrieved community’s concerns, real or perceived, about the film in question, they should not be allowed to hold individuals and the society to ransom. That’s what is happening now.

Nothing can stop release of ‘Padmavati’, says Deepika Padukone

0

A decade ago when she forayed into Bollywood, Deepika Padukone never imagined she would be a Sanjay Leela Bhansali heroine.

Now, as she prepares for the release of epic drama “Padmavati”, which clocks her trilogy with the filmmaker, the actress is confident the movie will tide over the controversy, hit the screens and win a “bigger battle” for the industry.

“As a woman, I feel proud to be a part of this film, and to tell this story, which needs to be told. And it needs to be told now,” Deepika, who plays the title role in “Padmavati” — Bhansali’s professed tribute to the sacrifice, valour and honour of Rajput queen Rani Padmavati — told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Doubts on the extent to which the National Award winning filmmaker has fictionalised the story, has led to a spiralling controversy with politicians, organisations and individuals raising a finger at Bhansali for “distorting history” and demanding that the release of “Padmavati” be stalled. Deepika is convinced the movie will release, as scheduled, on December 1.

“It’s appalling, it’s absolutely appalling. What have we gotten ourselves into? And where have we reached as a nation? We have regressed,” she said, commenting on the hullabaloo the movie is causing pre-release.

“The only people we are answerable to is the censor board, and I know and I believe that nothing can stop the release of this film,” said Deepika, adding that the film industry’s support symbolises how “this is not about ‘Padmavati’… We’re fighting a much bigger battle”.

“Padmavati” marks the third film that Deepika has worked in under Bhansali’s direction after romantic crime drama “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela” and historical drama “Bajirao Mastani” — all of which, she says, gave her roles “so similar, yet so different”.

“They are very independent individuals and very strong characters,” Deepika said, her voice exuding pride that in “Padmavati”, while there are two men — Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh — she essays the title role, which “does not happen often in a woman’s career”.

“I celebrate that,” she said.

Interestingly, November has marked not just Deepika’s 10 years in the film industry — her debut film “Om Shanti Om” was released on November 9 — but also November 15 is when “… Ram-Leela” hit the screens four years ago.

“When I debuted, ‘Saawariya’ (directed by Bhansali) and ‘Om Shanti Om’ had released on the same day. I remember back then, there was this whole thing about the films clashing, this debut versus that debut. But I was so naive and so new that none of that made any sense to me at that point. The only thought I remember thinking to myself then was, ‘Oh! How come he didn’t cast me in his movie?’

“I didn’t ever think that I could be a Bhansali heroine,” said the daughter of badminton icon Prakash Padukone.

She describes the “evolution” as “phenomenal”.

“From never having been to a film set before and to not knowing how to deliver dialogues to today enjoying the craft so much where I am the most peaceful and happiest when I am in front of the camera… I think that’s the evolution. And then along the way you meet a Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who adds so much meaning to me not just as an actor and performer, but also as a human being,” the actor said.

“Ten years ago, thinking that I don’t fit the mould of being a Bhansali heroine, and today working in three films with him back-to-back… It’s been a pretty incredible journey,” said Deepika, who says she senses a soul, heart and mind connect with the director.

“We just understand each other by just looking at each other… I think you can only get to that stage when you reach a different sort of, almost a spiritual level of creativity, where you’re not afraid to take risks or failure. Everything you want to do is coming with a pure heart and a pure intention.”

So, can one expect them to collaborate yet again?

“Well, you never know. As of now, we are all focussed on ‘Padmavati’. And I would love to, although at this point, I also need to heal emotionally, mentally and physically from this experience. I think he and I both need to heal from this experience before we collaborate again,” she said.

Telangana BJP MLA threatens to burn theatres screening ‘Padmavati’

0

A legislator of BJP from Hyderabad has threatened to burn down theatres in Telangana if they screen Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati”, which is slated for release next month.

T. Raja Singh, a member of Telangana assembly, called upon people to boycott the movie, saying as an attempt is being made to denigrate Rajput community.

The MLA even announced that he will bail out youth if they are arrested for setting afire the theatres.

“Padmavati’ starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, is slated for release on December 1.

Singh, himself a Rajput, issued the threat while addressing a meeting of a Rajasthani organisation here. He termed the movie a conspiracy to show Rajputs in poor light by defaming their queens.

The MLA posted on facebook his speech delivered at the meeting on Friday.

He called Bhansali a “dog” for allegedly portraying Padmavathi as a lover of Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji. He claimed that 16,000 brave women immolated themselves when Chittorgarh fort was attacked.

He said the filmmaker had still not responded to the demand from Rajput and Kshatriya organisations that the movie should be shown to them before releasing in theaters.

“If the film depict history without any distortion and highlights the valour of Rajputs, we will welcome it but if it portrays them in poor light then we will not allow its release in theatres,” he said.

The MLA said producers were producing such films to make money as more people were going to theatres to watch them due to the controversies. He said “PK” earned Rs 500 crore as more people watched it after the protests.

“If you are true patriots and true Hindus, you should boycott such movies. You should not help them make money. If the film flops, no other filmmaker will dare to make such movies,” said Singh, who represents Goshamahal constituency and is known for making controversial statements.

More trouble for Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’

0

trouble for Padmavati release

Trouble seems to be mounting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati”, with now a Brahmin organisation, Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha, deciding to oppose release of his magnum opus.

In a statement, Suersh Mishra, state president of Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha said that they will not tolerate “distortion” of historical facts at any cost.

The Sri Rajput Karni Sena, an organisation of Rajput community, has already opposed release of the film on December 1 on the same grounds.

Mishra said: “As per the feelings of the general public, screening of this movie should be stopped otherwise the Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha will oppose this movie.”

He said, “They (Bhansali’s team) are trying to defame Padmavati by distorting historical facts. No one can tolerate this.”

The film has been steeped in trouble since shooting began. In January, activists of the Sri Rajput Karni Sena had protested, manhandled and misbehaved with the crew of “Padmavati” claiming that Bhansali was distorting historical facts in the movie.

They had also damaged some cameras and other equipments. Bhansali had to stop shooting.

In March, some miscreants broke the mirrors in Padmini Mahal (palace) in Chittorgarh Fort where Alauddin Khilji is believed to have seen Rani Padmavati or Padmini.

The Karni Sena claims that mirror was invented years after the incident is claimed to have happened so it is a completely untrue and false story.

On November 3, the Karni Sena had called for a Chittorgarh bandh, which it claimed was a success.

Rani Padmini or Padmavati was queen of Chittorgarh.

The Sri Rajput Karni Sena with the help of like-minded organisations plans to organise a big rally in Gandhinagar in Gujarat on November 12 against the movie.

Will leave some impact with ‘Padmavati’ role: Aditi Rao Hydari

0

Actress Aditi Rao Hydari, who will be seen as actor Ranveer Singhs wife in “Padmavati”, says she might be playing a small part in the upcoming period drama film, but she will leave some impact on viewers’ mind.

“It’s not a major role. When I signed on for ‘Padmavati’, I knew very well it was going to be a small part. But, Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir presents all his women so well,” Aditi said.

“In ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela – Ram-Leela’, Richa Chadha had a brief role, but she made an impact. I am sure I will leave some impact in ‘Padmavati’. No one who works with Sanjay sir comes away without benefiting from the association.

“I want to be happy in what I do. I don’t want to work with people who spread negative vibes,” she added.

Directed by Bhansali, “Padmavati” features Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles.

Aditi, who turned a year older on Saturday, says she “don’t socialise” much.

“I don’t party. I don’t have too many friends in the film industry. My family lives in Hyderabad. So, it (my birthday) does get lonely. My team is my family in Mumbai. I liked spending time on my birthday with them,” she said.

Padmavati may face Gujarat hurdle

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati, due to be released on December 1, has run into another problem, this time in the hands of a politician.

Former Gujarat chief minister and ex-Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela has demanded the screening of the film for Hindu and Kshatriya community leaders before releasing it for ascertaining whether the movie had been made according to historical facts.

Vaghela reportedly said on Wednesday, “One can’t tamper with historical facts and present them as per one’s wishes to get cheap publicity. If the movie is released without pre-screening, Gujarat will witness violent protests.” As if they are bound to happen, he had apologized to the theatre owners in advance if the situation goes out of hand.

By raising the issue of ‘historical facts’ and twining it with religion and community, the founder of newly formed Jan Vikalp party (he quit Congress in August), has raised a hornet’s nest in the communally-sensitive state of Gujarat which is going to polls on December 9 and 14.

Obviously, his intention is to exploit the film’s release by kicking up a controversy. Whether he benefits or not is secondary. What should be of immediate concern is his demand for pre-screening and the warning of a possible agitation which have the potential of snowballing into a bigger controversy on the eve of Assembly elections. In the worst possible scenario, the agitation could mar the state polls.

Vaghela’s demand, even if not heeded, could set a dangerous precedent with unthinkable consequences in a country where history is interpreted and distorted, not necessarily based on ‘facts.’ Period films or historical movies can always be subjected to various interpretations by different denominations of society and no two communities will agree on one point, whether it is ‘a fact’ or fiction. If several changes are to be made from time to time according to the wishes of community heads or leaders, movie producers and directors could never complete a film, let alone release it.

Already, we have a Censor Board whose ‘cuts’ are either questioned or contested, self-appointed guardians of moral values, culture and tradition and organisations and associations claiming to represent community interests, to keep a strict watch on films made in every language in the country. Their avowed mission is to ‘protect and safeguard’ the sensitivities and sensibilities of a thousand and odd castes and sub-castes, including their traditional attires, languages, food habits, lifestyles, etc. If the films are dragged into political wrangling, it does not augur well for the industry.
