Once a gun-wielding Maoist, tribal MLA from Telangana gets PhD

1

From a gun-wielding Maoist to lawyer to a legislator and now PhD in political sciences, Danasari Anasuya’s life is full of struggles.

Seethakka, as the Congress leader and member of the Telangana Assembly, is popularly known, Tuesday took to Twitter to declare that she has completed the PhD from Osmania University.

The 50-year-old tribal MLA did her PhD in social exclusion and deprivation of migrant tribals of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh – a case study of Gotti Koya tribes in Warangal and Khammam district.

“In my childhood, I never thought I would be a Naxalite (Maoist), when I am Naxalite, I never thought I would be a lawyer, when I am lawyer, I never thought I would be MLA, when I am MLA I never thought I will pursue my PhD. Now you can call me Dr Anusuya Seethakka PhD in political science,” wrote Seethakka, MLA from Mulugu.

“Serving people & gaining knowledge is my habit. I will never stop doing it until my last breath,” she said.

She thanked her PhD guide Prof. T Tirupathi Rao, former Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, HOD Prof Musalaia, Prof Ashok Naidu, and Prof Chandru Nayak.

Congratulations poured in for Seethakka on her achievement. Leaders of Congress and people from different walks of life congratulated her and expressed their best wishes for her future endeavors.

Party’s central leader and incharge of party affairs in Telangana Manickam Tagore, state Congress chief A. Revanth Reddy, and senior leader Madhu Goud Yaskhi were among those who congratulated her.

Belonging to the Koya tribe, Seethakka had joined Maoist movement at an early age and was heading an armed squad active in the same tribal belt. She participated in many gunfights with the police and lost her husband and brother in encounters.

Disillusioned with the movement, she surrendered to the police under a general amnesty plan in 1994. With this, life took a new turn for Seethakka, who pursued her studies and secured a law degree. She also practised as an advocate at a court in Warangal.

She later joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and contested from Mulug in 2004 elections. However, facing a Congress wave, she finished runner-up. However, in 2009, she won the election from the same constituency.

She finished third in 2014 polls and in 2017, quit the TDP to join Congress. She made a strong comeback in 2018 by wresting the seat despite the statewide sweep by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Seethakka hit the headlines with her humanitarian work in remote villages in her constituency during Covid-19 pandemic.

Carrying a load of essentials on her shoulders, she walked through the forests, rocky terrain and crossed rivulets to help the needy during the ongoing lockdown.

Having operated in the same forest as a gun-wielding Maoist rebel in the late 1980s and early 1990s, she was not unfamiliar with the terrain. The only difference, in her own words, was that as a Maoist had a gun in her hand and during the pandemic she carried food and other essential commodities.

Bihar to electrify Warangal campaign

0

Bihar changed the complexion of the   bypoll campaign for the Warangal Lok Sabha constituency. The resounding victory of Grand Alliance led by chief minister Nitish Kumar and debacle of BJP is all set to  occupy the centre stage in the campaign for Warangal,  which is 1500 km  from the  epicenter of yesterday’s earth shaking development. Since Sunday morning, when trends of counting started pouring in, Bihar has become buzz word in  every political meeting in the Constituency, which is scheduled to go to poll on November 21.   Bihar sharpened both tongues and tunes  of Congress.  The T-Congress twisted the Bihar election result and redirected it towards Telanga Rashtra Samiti supremo and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. The party calling upon the people to see Modi in KCR.

Against the backdrop of the clear victory for the party and its alliance in Bihar,  Congress  was quick to grab the opportunity to attack KCR.  Entire who’s who of Telangana Congress has descended on  Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday. The galaxy included former union minister S Jaipal Reddy,  Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Ra. TPCC president  N Uttam Kumar Reddy, leader of opposition K Jana Reddy, former Nizambad MP Madhu Yaski, leader of opposition in legislative council Md Ali Shabbr etc. They  launched a  frontal attack on  chief minister KCR and his style of governance. Jaipal Reddy said Bihar echoes would be felt in Warangal as well and Congress was sure to win the election. Stating that it was not an ordinary victory for Grand Alliance, Bihar people hunted Prime Modi out of Bihar, in which the PM campaigned so extensively  ignoring his status in the national politics. PCC president Uttam said KCR and Modi were identical in their  politics and KCR also would meet the same fate in Warangal like Modi in Bihar. All the leaders said Warangal  people would get enthused by the Bihar result and would teach a lesson to TRS as well. V Hanumantha Rao said TRS was also facing an opposition from the people  similar to the one the BJP faced in Bihar. ” In every TRS meetings, people , especially farmers, are questioning the TRS minister for their failure to deliver in the 17 months. This was exactly what Modi and the BJP experienced in Bihar. People were so fed up by Modi’s rule in past 17months that they did not even take cognizance of the huge financial package of Rs 1.25 lakh crore announced by Prime Minister Modi on eve of elections.” He said Congress would carry the Bihar message across the constituency. Uttam says Warangal people are  waiting to give their judgement on the 17 months of  government for his Modi -like governance, tall talk and empty hands.

Congress back on the rails in Telangana

0

Ever since Uttam Kumar Reddy and Mallu Bhatti Vikramarkha took over the reins, there has literally been a total transformation of Congress in Telangana. The duo, both MLAs, have put the party back on rails. What is most visible in the party is the rare unity among the Congress leaders. Uttam is able to bring all the leaders together. Not a day passes without out the party organizing a dharna or rally or some protest in one place or the other against the ruling party. The Congress, in less than a year, has been able to weather the worst of its troubles arisen out of defeat in 2014 election and it is clear that it is on the road to recovery. Team Uttam made the Congress state leadership most mobile one.
The leaders are seen touring all the districts and mandals with one program or the other.

Congres

The party has concluded meetings in all constituencies that fall in the jurisdiction GHMC in order to keep the party fit to take on TDP and TRS in GHMC polls. The Congress is in the lead in the preparatory race to Warangal Lok Sabha bypolls. Uttam & Co has been successful in making every issue a rallying point to mobilize the workers. Normally, it is rare for any political party, which bit dust in the polls and lost power, to pull its act together in so short a period. The defection of D Srinivas, a senior leader, to TRS, has not had any impact on the party.

Gandhi Bhavan, the state party headquarters, has been abuzz with activities. Pranahita-Chevella, Osmania General Hospital, anti-cheap liquor, jobs, farmers suicides, Muslim reservations, corruption charges against ministers, Corruption in Kakatiya mission etc- everything has become a weapon in the hands of Team Uttam. He streamlined the system of spokesmen in such an manner that the party voice is heard uninterrupted.

Congress bubbling with enthusiasm

The massive dharna organized by the T-Congress on Wednesday at Vikarabaka bears testimony to the bubbling enthusiasm in the rank and file of the party in the state. The program received unprecedented support from the people as Congress had taken up right cause at the right time. The party added the demand for separate Vikarabad district to the list of the demands which included withdrawal of the proposal to scrap the approved design of Pranahita-Chevella. The leaders participated in the dharna include former ministers Sabita Indra Reddy, G Prasad Kumar,Sarve Satyanarana, Md Shabbir Ali, Ram Mohan Reddy, G Sudir Reddy, P Karthik, Bikshapthi Goud, Srisailam Goud, Lakshma Reddy, Sridhar, Malla Reddy, RR district Congress president Mallesh.

On Thursday, Congress organized a dharna against the proposed introduction cheap liquor by TRS government near Hayantnagar (pic.above). Former MLA Sudhir Reddy lead the Dharna. Reddy has become so active these days, he transformed LB Nagar into a Dharna Chowk of Ranga Reddy district.

Can this unity be sustained? This enthusiasm should not lead to agitation-fatigue in the party.
