The coalition government in Andhra Pradesh has recently completed a major district reorganisation exercise. Leaders argued that the previous division carried out during the YSRCP regime was poorly planned. A committee of ministers reviewed public concerns and suggested new boundaries. Based on this study, the government revised district limits, created three new districts and notified five new revenue divisions.
Yet the controversy has not ended. Several groups continue to demand changes to district names and boundaries. One of the most debated issues involves three Assembly constituencies from Krishna district, Nuzvid, Gannavaram and Penamaluru. Many citizens want these areas to be moved under the NTR district, which is centred around Vijayawada. However, Penamaluru MLA Bode Prasad strongly opposed this shift. In response, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu deferred the proposal.
Amid these ongoing discussions, another demand has now taken shape. Vijayawada Central MLA Bonda Uma, who represents the region under NTR district, has called for renaming Krishna district after Kapu leader Vangaveeti Ranga. He made this appeal at the Kapunadu Swarotsavam event held at the Vijayawada Gymkhana Grounds. He urged the government to name a district after the Kapu community and honour Ranga’s legacy by renaming Krishna district.
Bonda Uma assured the community that he would meet the Chief Minister soon to present this request formally. This demand adds a new layer to an already sensitive issue. During the YSRCP era, there were similar appeals to name either Krishna or NTR district after Ranga, but the previous government avoided the decision to prevent further controversy.
Now, with renewed demands and shifting political priorities, all eyes are on how the current government will respond.
