Tollywood Crumbles to Half of 2018 in US – 2019 Half Yearly Report

0

If you thought that it was only domestic market that nosedived in 2019 for Tollywood, North America hit altogether another level of low. The first six months of the year were able to bring in only $9.57 million to India from the states, which is less than half of what 2018 ($20.03 million) bring in. It get worse compared to 2017, as we are looking at close to one-third.

Just like domestic market, the lack of big films and poor performance of big films was the major reason of this downfall. The success ratio was somewhat satisfactory at 20 percent, similar to 2018.

The biggest hit of the year remain F2 which did phenomenal business in January. Maharshi is second biggest grosser but a loss venture for its US investors.

The business classification of Tollywood in North America is as follow.

Weekend Report : Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya tops, other releases Below Par

0

New Releases :

1. Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya :

ASSA has topped the weekend with very good collections in cities & good collections in A centres. The hold on weekdays is crucial for the film as all centres came on to the board only on Sunday. Good !

2. First Rank Raju : The film has opened to decent collections on Friday in AP but couldn’t hold it as it has dropped over the weekend. The collections are low in Nizam. It can be termed as a below par weekend overall. Below par !

3. Mallesham : The film is doing decent business in Hyderabad City and is below par in rest of the Telugu States. Word of mouth is good for the film but biopics have limited appeal at the box office unless they are aggressively well promoted or enacted by big stars. Below par !

Delayed dub release Gajendrudu is limited to decent collections in B centres of AP while Manchu Vishnu’s Voter is a huge disaster.

Holdovers:

Maharshi which is about to celebrate 50 days run in more than 140 centres has continued to be the best among the holdovers. The film is nearing its final run & running on % basis mostly.

Game over which was limited to Multiplexes in first week couldn’t hold enough in the second weekend as it got affected by ASSA. The film is a below par venture at the box office.

2019 First Quarter Report – Low Start to the year

We are one quarter down the year and it’s time to go through monies these movies made, and to see how the first quarter fared overall.

A total of 44 films saw the light of day during the first quarter, which is solid 20% up from the number last year and unfortunately, same can’t be said about the success rate, as the success rate has slipped down to 7% from 14% last year. The overall revenues also dropped, both domestically and globally despite more number of releases. The films with some sort of awareness collected about ₹172 crore distributor share, which was ₹174 crore during 2018 Q1. The difference might not appear big in raw numbers but one should remember the reduction in GST rates in January 2019 and of course 7 more releases.

Things are even worse worldwide, with mere ₹189 crore returns as against ₹205 crore last year for Telugu films.

January (9 films) was a mixed bag but the best of the three months, thanks to F2 collecting over ₹81 crore share worldwide (Top 8 of all time). However, the big films tanked; NTR Kathanayakudu (third biggest Disaster ever in TFI) & Vinaya Vidheya Rama did not perform well after a good opening. Akhil’s Mr Majnu also ended up as a Flop

February was the worst with not even a single film emerging as a success out of 13 films released. Noticeable films like Yatra & Ntr Mahanayakudu have ended up flop & disaster respectively. There were notable dub releases like Dev & Lover’s day which also ended up as failures.

118, Lakshmi’s NTR (didn’t release in AP) have emerged as hit films in March out of the 22 films released. ‘Chikati Gadilo Chilakkottudu’ has done average business. Even though the release count looks high, many of these films haven’t attracted any crowds to the theatre which in turn made the theatres to run shows for even less than 10 people. March is the month which is always hit by Examination Season. Adding to that the upcoming election campaign has also affected the collections.

Second Quarter is starting with Majili, Chitralahari, Jersey, Kanchana 3 (dub), Sita, Maharshi, Dear Comrade, Falaknuma Das, NGK (dub) and many more are lined up for release.

Baahubali 2 to Fetch 1000 Cr Profit

0

SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus “Baahubali 2” was expected to become the first Indian film to gross Rs 1000 crore worldwide. The film has achieved this feat in less than ten days only. Going by the film’s smashing performance at box office, trade experts now predict that the film will fetch the magical 1000 crore in profits alone.

By the end of its third weekend, Baahubali 2 grossed around 1400 crore. The film is expected to have a lifetime business of more than Rs 1500 crore. Even 2000 crore is a possibility if Baahubali 2 is received well in China when the film hits screens there in a few months.

Coming to the film’s breakdown of earnings, as the entertainment tax varies from place to place, arriving at an exact producers’ share is very difficult. Their profit can be in the range of Rs 500-600 crore. Baahubali 2 had collected around Rs 400 crore from pre-sales rights. Accruing all the numbers, the Prabhas starrer is expected to fetch a net profit of whopping Rs 1000 crore.

The makers spent about Rs 450 crore on both parts of Baahubali. Despite the huge success of the first part, they couldn’t make any profit which was shared completely between exhibitors and distributors. Film’s producers have received their due profit from second part.

The final gross and profit can be more than the said numbers as the film is yet to hit screens in non-Indian languages across potential overseas territories.
