Fidaa continues its dream run, eyeing few more milestones

Varun Tej starrer Fidaa is unstoppable at the box office even ten days after its release. The film is raking in decent moolah in its second week despite the release of other films. In Telugu states, Fidaa is inching closer towards the 40 Crore club.

Extending its dream run in overseas, the romantic drama is close to $ 1.7 Million mark and is at a touching distance to some of the blockbuster hits like Attarintiki Daredi and Janatha Garage. The film collected $ 27K and $ 50K ( counting) on its second Monday and Tuesday respectively and surpassed the lifetime run of Balakrishna’s GPSK. Fidaa is now the third highest grosser of 2017 in overseas after Baahubali 2 and Khaidi No 150.

Going by its strong run, trade circles are predicting that the film is most likely to end in the all time top 6 highest grossing Telugu films in overseas.

2016 sleeper hit Pelli Choopulu had a sensational run after second Tuesday and collected $ 440K. If Fidaa manages a similar feat at the box office after its second Tuesday, chances are likely that the film will collect close to $ 2 M – $2.1 M in its full run.

Venky’s film is very different love story: Varun Tej

0

Basking in the success of Telugu film “Fidaa”, a love story set against the backdrop of Telangana, actor Varun Tej says his upcoming yet-untitled Telugu outing with director Venky Atluri will be a very different love story.

“People must be wondering why I’m doing two back-to-back love stories. Venky’s love story is very different and that’s why I didn’t mind doing these films in succession. Both of these films have their own charm,” Varun told IANS.

Also starring Raashi Khanna, the film went on the floors in the last week of July.

“Even though ‘Fidaa’ was a love story, Sekhar’s touch and presentation made it stand out. Similarly, Venky has perceived love so differently and that’s what makes his film different,” Varun said.

I Argued With Kammula Over Bhanumathi – Sai Pallavi

Sai Pallavi, the beautiful Malayali girl who cast a spell in her native land with ‘Premam’, has made a relatively bigger impact on Telugu audiences with ‘Fidaa’.

Here is the summary of Pallavi’s chit-chat with Telugu360.com

* What is the secret of getting into the skin of Bhanumathi’s character so easily and so effectively?

First of all, I want to thank audiences from the bottom of my heart for such a warm reception for me in the Telugu film industry. After Premam was released, people started calling me ‘Malar’. I thought I wouldn’t get such impactful character again but I feel blessed to have got Fidaa. I believed in Sekhar sir’s script and did what I could for my part.

* Were you confident of pulling off Bhanumathi character when you heard the narration?

I was skeptical at first as the character is very chirpy and straightforward. Sekhar sir however convinced me.

* How did you master the Telangana accent?

I learnt Telangana accent specially for Fidaa. For me, Telugu language is nothing but Telangana accent. I am using some of my dialogues from Fidaa even on the sets of my new films.

* Your dialogues have received huge response in theatres

– Yes, I have watched Fidaa in a theatre. I was pleasantly surprised by the huge response. In fact, at one point, I started believing that people were celebrating my performance but I was informed later that it was the power of Pawan Kalyan’s references.

* Have you seen Pawan Kalyan’s films?

– I saw Gabbar Singh, I liked it a lot.

* Were there any uncomfortable moments in the Set?

Not one. But, there was a scene which made me feel embarrassed. Generally, I can’t stay awake post 10 in the night. We had to film a scene after 10 and I took several takes to finish that scene.

* Why did you turn down the offer to act in Premam remake?

– In fact, I wasn’t offered the remake, it was just a rumor. However, I believe that acting in remakes is very tough as recreating the magic of original is impossible.

* Working Experience with Varun Tej?

– He is a very comfortable co-star. He excelled with his subtle acting in Fidaa.

* About your role in MCA

– Its the character of a middle class girl. I feel that it will be another memorable film for me just like Premam and Fidaa.

* How was Sekhar Kammula’s working style?

– He has his unique style. He gave me full freedom in the sets. Whenever he calls me ‘Sai Pallavi’, I used to argue with him and ask him to call me as ‘Bhanumathi’ reasoning that he first have to believe in his heroine’s character. Later, he used to call me ‘Bhanumathi’ only.

* Will you continuously do films from now?

– I don’t like to act in multiple films at once, I am doing one by one at the moment. My aim is to become a doctor and I will surely become one day. I will do as many as films as I can in the meanwhile.

Fidaa Likely to Become 3rd Highest Grosser Among Mega Films

Fidaa Overseas

Varun Tej has a long way to go before competing with the films of his Seniors in Mega family at box office. The young hero however has a golden opportunity to register his name in the Top 3 in Mega family at the US box office, all thanks to Sekhar Kammula and ‘Fidaa’.

By the end of Tuesday, Fidaa took its grand total at US box office to $1.15M. With such consistent run, Fidaa is most likely to collect $1.5M in its full run. If that happens, the Kammula directorial will push behind Ram Charan’s Dhruva ($1.47M) to become the third highest grosser among films starring Mega family heroes. It would be an honor for Varun to reach the Top 3 with a class film like Fidaa.

What’s more, if the film’s dream run further extends, Fidaa may even pose a threat to the lifetime collections of Pawan Kalyan’s Attharintiki Daredi ($1.89M). Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Khaidi No.150 stands atop with close to $2.5M collections.

Even if Fidaa becomes the Top grosser among films from Mega family, the record may not last longer as both PK-Trivikram project and Charan’s ‘Rangasthalam’ are slated for release in less than six months.

” Fidaa ” detailed Analysis

Shekhar Kammula has always been a different and responsible film-maker committed to showcasing Telugu nativities as well as presenting human values in ways that everybody understands. His films were evocative, neat and arty but were non-conformist by Tollywood conventions. And then he became impervious to the usual wave of adulation and apathy that greets many a director who alternates between feast and fast in Tollywood. Until “Fidaa” happened. The movie is an outright winner and one of the best-made love stories that will linger on for a long long time after you step out. This film should have been ideally Dil Raju’s silver jubilee film instead of DJ. But for Shekhar Kammula, this is a proud comeback film that will resurrect his career after “Anamika”. Two things will happen after “Fidaa”, all those top stars and producers who heard Shekhar’s stories before saying NO will pay heed when he narrates his script next time.

What is special about “Fidaa”? The story is not unique. It is a simple love story of an NRI doctor (Varun Tej) from USA who meets a BSc (Agri) girl (Sai Pallavi) from Bansuwada (Telangana) with a known twist as in “Hum Aapke Hai Kaun” (siblings of an arranged marriage couple). But in 145 minutes, Shekhar Kammula weaves a cheery romance that fills the air around you and surcharges the screen with the roller-coaster ride of love emotions the lead characters go through . As the tag-line in the title says, “ A love hate love story”. With a not-so-hurried interval bang and a sure-footed feel-good ending, Shekhar Kammula shows he is still in command of the craft – in giving meaningful dialogues, script and an honest way of story-telling with the subtextual messages about society and living never missing their mark no matter which character in the film gives out. The message could come from a well-known comedian like Satyam Rajesh (hero’s friend) or Raja Chembolu (hero’s brother) or Saichand (heroine’s father) or the boy brother of the hero (who asks not-so-innocently “Are they making out?”) or a farmer who is about to lose his agricultural land to a real estate shark. It is these subtle points in measured doses that make Shekhar stand out as a responsible director who doesn’t cut corners in silly mockery, item songs or pointless stunts. That class and subtlety comes out convincingly in the plot despite some obvious misses – like how the romance is hidden from plainsight from other family members until the hero reveals it to his sister-in-law.

Right from the start, Shekhar maintains the grip on telling a realistic story between a rustic girl and an urbane boy in conceivable situations. Shekhar makes it a riveting watch by capturing the ibby-jibbies of two lovers who were meant to unite some day but only after going through the mandatory overs of love-hate-love. Misunderstanding is the currency that keeps the love in circulation and that is what the director milks with magical effect – the motions you go through those moments of intensity not only get your targeted rate of heart-beat high but also bump you down at times until the mind yearns for realization of what has to necessarily play out. Very few directors like K Viswanath (Swarna Kamalam), Karunakaran (Tholi Prema), Mani Ratnam (Gitanjali) and Gautam Menon (Ye Maaya Chesaave) maintained the balance between telling a good love story without too much noise. In that sense, Shekhar deserves applause for striking a chord there with consummate ease.

To a large extent, the collaboration with a commercially-successful producer like Dil Raju has given “Fidaa” a makeover that few can afford. You can see the production values of this film with the half a dozen films that Shekhar directed before and the uplift in standards shows. Cinematography by Vijay Kumar is captivating as it shows the sylvan landscape of the most fertile Telangana areas in splendor while capturing the essential love story down to its pivoting moments of eye-ball movement between Varun Tej and Sai Pallavi. Marthand K Venkatesh has been editing Shekhar’s films for a long time but this film will make his work stand out – except for one lazy scene in pre-interval in San Francisco, Marthand has retained the mind of the director in what he wants to tell and omit in the pulsating romance that gives you enough thrills. Music by Shaktikanth Karthik is a welcome addition to “Fidaa” and definitely enhances the beauty of the film by giving us some memorable tracks. Shaktikanth’s music seems to have a good rhythm, instrumentation and range that can catapult him to a position of pre-eminence. The first song doesn’t come until 55 minutes of runtime but after “Vacchinde” song comes, there is no getting away from the charms of the music director. Good to see the director acknowledge the legend Saluri Rajeshwar Rao for the song “He Pillagaada” (easily the best soundtrack of the film) where he uses the timeless melodious instrumentation of the classic “Malleeswari” to embellish the song. The title credits also show another composer Jeevesh Babu who scores the background music; he does a good job of syncing the OST with the threads of the soulfulness in the music of Shaktikanth. It must be a bold choice for the makers especially Dil Raju to side-step the likes of Mani Sharma and Mickey J Meyer to score BGM for the film.

Performance-wise, Sai Pallavi is a bewitching half-beauty who carries the film on her shoulders. She has been a bold choice considering that she holds no airs of a starlet nor has oomph or a face that can stir a thousand hearts, yet she exudes an expression of uninhibitive charm and pastoral attitude that is enchanting to watch. Her performance should shame many pretty lasses in Tollywood who know nothing about nuanced acting but are minting monies by virtue of castor-oil-requiring makeup and sleazy skin show. Sai Pallavi’s Telangana accent will be the talk of the town and more film-makers will now be truly emboldened to segue films with heroines waxing eloquent in Telangana dialect. It goes to Shekhar and Dil Raju’s credit that they retained Sai Pallavi and backed her to the hilt – any other replacement wouldn’t have had unleashed such countryside contagion. Varun Tej also shines in the film that will go down as his first big hit. He might have got overshadowed by Sai Pallavi at many points because the girl played the role for broke while Varun still had to wear a chip of glamor but he is proving to be a classier Tej in the clan of heroes all trying to up the ante in masala fare. His diction has changed from “Mister” and this film shows good work-in-progress for his articulation. The chemistry between Varun and Sai Pallavi is palpable and one shudders to think whether this is the same script that Mahesh Babu turned down when Shekhar narrated the story. All other lead characters like Sharanya Pradeep, Raja Chembolu and Satyam Rajesh fitted their roles well. But the character that stands out is yesteryears’ actor Saichand who plays father with utmost dignity and class. His role reminds you of the promise that he showed many years back when Saichand acted in the award-winning art film “Maa Bhoomi”. There is an air of serenity and supreme calm whenever Saichand speaks on screen.

On the whole, the film is worth a decent watch by family and friends. If one connects to the film’s love track, perhaps repeat viewing may also ensue making the film a huge hit. Whatever that be, Shekhar Kammula and his team of Assistant Directors and a long list of co-directors including Anish Kuruvilla deserve ovation for creating one of the most mesmerizing love stories of our times. Hope more commercial stars and producers relook at banking on this talented director who never takes short-cuts to taste success.

‘Fidaa’ Review : A fun filled feel-good movie !

Fidaa review, Fidaa telugu movie review

Telugu360 Rating 3.5/5

Sekhar Kammula who once happened to enjoy a star director status in overseas market, specifically in youth segment, seemed to have lost his Midas touch in the recent past. In an attempt to regain his former glory, the director came up with a youthful entertainer ‘Fidaa’ in association with Dil Raju who is also known for family pleasant movies. Let’s find out if this film work in favor of the actors and makers?

Story:
Fidaa is a feel-good family story of two couples. Bhanumati (Sai Pallavi) and her sister Renuka live in a village near Banswada in Telangana. Raju (Raja Chembolu) who is an NRI, in match making process, visits Renuka’s house along with his younger brother Varun (Varun Tej). Raju likes Renuka and as they prepare for marriage, love blossoms between Bhanumati and Varun.

While Raju and Renuka are happily married, there is a conflict between the lead couple. Raju, Renuka and Varun leave for USA. Rest of the story is about how the conflict between Varun and Bhanumati develops and subsequently leading to the climax.

Analysis:
Set in the background of a middle-class family, Fidaa is a testimony of Sekhar Kammula’s sensibilities. The rural backdrop, the bonding of two sisters, their lively conversations and the soul of rural Telangana makes you fall in love with the film for its entire first half. In the role of rebellious village belle Bhanumati which is an author backed role, Sai Pallavi nailed it with her stellar performance and dubbing. Dialogues showcasing the attitude of Bhanumati are enjoyable not only by the youth but also by family audience. The prompt punch liners by her are smartly written. The marriage of Raju and Renuka happens during a heavy downpour in the village. It is very realistic with a nice execution.

However, the misunderstanding between Varun and Bhanumati towards interval fails to sound convincing. Bhanumati, being bold and new age girl, suspecting Varun for an insignificant reason is impractical. Superhit song “Vachinde…Melliga Vachinde” is fantastic on screen. Again, Sai Pallavi who is also an amazing dancer, made this song hit. Other two songs in first half “Hey Mister”, “Ey Pillagaada” are decent enough. Overall, first half is very good for all sections of audience despite slow narration at times.

Second half begins with all the characters except Bhanumati returning to the USA. Conflicts escalate between Varun and Bhanumati. The love proposal scene and Bhanumati’s response are hilarious. Towards middle of the second half, movie considerably slows down with the story going nowhere. The love – hate – love thread between Varun and Bhanumati becomes redundant. However, the conflict, the realization and the reunion points are not narrated in a convincingly manner. The movie would have been a blockbuster, had Sekhar excelled in these aspects. Bhanumati characterization seemed to be diluted, especially in the second half, as her love-hate confusion is not heart touching. Melodious superhit “oosupodhu…” song comes as Montage song. Fast beat number “Edo Jarugutondi..” is also good. There is nothing new that the story has to offer, except for the different backdrops (Rural Telangana and USA) which brings about some freshness.

Performances:
Varun Tej as Varun has evolved significantly as an actor. He needs to keep a check on his weight. Sai Pallavi is the show stealer and brings life into Bhanumati’s character. Her own dubbing in Telangana accent is praiseworthy. However, in her close-up shots, pimples all over her cheeks is bit annoying to watch. Raja Chembolu who is Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry’s son, played nicely as Varun’s brother. Sharanya Pradeep as Sai Pallavi’s sister did well and is a good choice for the role. Sai Chand as the father of the girls is a perfect fit.

Technicians:
Sekhar Kammula still remains relevant with youth. He observed the present generation girls as good as he did in Anand, 13 years ago. Fidaa may not be his best work, but definitely has its moments of sensibilities, feelings and emotions. Shakthikanth Karthick’s music has soul and all songs are pretty much good. Background score is decent. Dil Raju spent lavishly wherever required to deliver the look of a quality film. Presently when YouTube type short film quality is flourishing in the industry, it is good to see that the makers spent well to give a true cinematic appeal. Editor and cinematographer did their job well to make this flick a decent watch.

Verdict:
Fidaa is a feel-good film with loads of humor, love, emotions and nice songs. While the first half is very good, second half is just passable with few dull moments. This film may not be Sekhar Kammula’s best work, but definitely worth watching with the family. Heroine Sai Pallavi is the show stealer with her commendable performance. This film has all ingredients to become HIT in ‘A’ centers and in overseas market.

Huge fan of Kammula’s natural style of filmmaking: Varun Tej

Actor Varun Tej, who has teamed up with Sekhar Kammula in the forthcoming Telugu release “Fidaa”, says he is a fan of the filmmakers natural approach to filmmaking and realism he brings to his craft.

In the film, slated for release on Friday, Varun plays an NRI doctor.

On teaming up with Kammula for the first time, Varun told IANS: “What makes Sekhar sir distinct from the filmmakers I have worked with so far is his natural approach to filmmaking.”

“I’m a huge fan of his style. He doesn’t like to go overboard for the sake of satisfying a section of the audiences. He brings lot of realism to his work.”

Varun said the film questions the society’s archaic notion about marriage.

“The way Sekhar sir has treated the film’s climax, which breaks the tradition of how marriage is viewed in our society, made me fall in love with the film. I could call it my ‘fidaa’ moment of the film. I was moved by the climax and I’m sure audiences will love it too,” he said.

“Fidaa” marks the Telugu debut of Malayalam actress Sai Pallavi, and Varun is all praise for the newbie.

“Pallavi is a devoted actress and her commitment shocked me. We shared a very healthy competition, which made working with her even more exciting. Audiences will see our competitiveness reflect on screen and it’ll work in the film’s favour,” he added.

Fidaa chopped off by 25 minutes

Versatile director Sekhar Kammula is one director who prefers realistic films filled with human emotions. The director’s recent outings ended up as debacles and he is all set for his next film Fidaa after a huge break. Varuntej and Sai Pallavi played the lead roles in the movie which is said to be a romantic entertainer. The entire shoot of the film has been wrapped up and the recently released audio has been receiving thumping response from the audience. Dil Raju during the audio event revealed that he has given complete freedom to Sekhar Kammula and he just visited the sets of the movie for two days.

However the latest update says that Dil Raju happened to watch the copy of the film and he suggested lot of changes. He is said to have chopped off the film by 25 minutes after he watched the final draft of Fidaa. The film unit is working hard to restrict the film’s runtime for 2 hours and 15 minutes. With nothing much to do, Sekhar is currently busy trimming off his film. Fidaa has been aimed for July 21st release.

Mega hero desperate for a commercial success to survive

0

The illustrious ‘Mega’ family produced a bunch of stars in Tollywood. All actors made a mark for themselves with good hits under their belt. But, Naga Babu’s son Varun Tej is yet to deliver a commercial hit despite making his debut three years ago.

Varun Tej started his career with a soft role in Mukunda. Though he earned appreciation for his looks and screen presence, the film hasn’t delivered the desired result at the box office. He then chose an experimental subject like Kanche and bagged brownie points for his performance. But, the film didn’t click commercially.

Putting an end to experiments, Varun teamed up with Puri Jagannadh, only to dent his success graph to a further low by delivering a box office dud in the form of Loafer. His recent outing Mister with Sreenu Vaitla, too, lost at the box office without any trace. Now, he is desperate to deliver a commercial hit, which is very essential for him to survive.

His upcoming film Fidaa in Sekhar Kammula’s direction is getting ready to hit the screens later this month. After this , Varun has only one commitment – a film under Venky Atluri’s direction. So, it is time this Mega hero badly need a commercial success to lift his low lying career.
