Illegal soil excavation along the Polavaram right canal has triggered serious concern among farmers in Vijayawada Rural. What was permitted as a limited excavation has now turned into unchecked mining activity. Farmers allege that authorities have failed to act despite repeated complaints.
A private agency was granted permission to extract about 5,000 cubic meters of soil near Kothuru Tadepalli. However, locals claim that nearly 25,000 cubic meters have already been removed. Complaints were filed through official channels including PGRS and the Joint Collector’s office. Yet, no concrete action has been taken so far.
Farmers say the situation has worsened over the past few days. Excavation continues day and night without restriction. The dust generated from heavy movement of soil is damaging nearby mango orchards. This is a crucial flowering season, and even minor disturbances can impact yield. Around 250 acres of mango farms are at risk.
There are also growing fears about structural safety. Continuous soil removal is weakening the canal embankment. Farmers warn that if this continues, the canal could breach during heavy rains. Such a scenario could lead to flooding and endanger nearby villages.
Local residents also pointed to past irregularities. Large scale illegal excavation was reported during the previous administration. They allege that the same permissions are now being misused to continue illegal operations.
Farmers have now decided to resist the activity on ground. They say they will not allow further excavation until officials intervene. They are urging the Chief Minister to take immediate action and protect both livelihoods and public safety.
