Jagan visits Antarvedi, silent on chariot burning probe

1

In a record three months time, the new chariot of Antarvedi Temple was made ready. AP Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy visited Antarvedi and inaugurated the chariot today. Over Rs. 1 cr was spent to carve the new 40-ft high chariot for which 1,330 sq ft of bastar teak was used.

The CM has also pulled the chariot along with the devotees in its inaugural roll out. The Vedic pandits showered blessings on Mr. Jagan Reddy at the Raja Gopuram on the temple premises. He also had the darshan at the Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple.

The old chariot of Antarvedi Temple was burnt by miscreants on September 5 last year. The chariot torching created a sensation with the Opposition parties demanding a thorough investigation. The agitators took up Chalo Antarvedi protests as well. The AP Police could not achieve any breakthrough because of the failure of CCTV cameras that were placed at the chariot shed.

As a result, the CBI investigation was ordered into the torching incident. Ever since there has been no information about the status of the investigation. During his current visit, the CM just came and went but did not say a single word after inaugurating the chariot.

Govt begins works on building new chariot in Antarvedi temple

2

More than two weeks after the Antarvedi fire mishap incident, the Andhra Pradesh government has initiated works on building a new chariot for the Antarvedi Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple.

Upon Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy instructions, revenue minister Dharmana Krishnadas is overseeing the works on building the new chariot resembling the six-decade-old chariot which was reduced to cinders on September 5 in a mysterious fire mishap in the famous Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Antarvedi in East Godavari district.

The government has ordered special Bastar teak for the new chariot, while priests have already performed the necessary ceremonies to being the works on the new chariot. The state government has allocated Rs 95 lakh to build a new chariot.

So far, the Andhra Pradesh police have made no arrests. As a matter of fact, the police are clueless as to who burnt the six-decade-old chariot. The Andhra Pradesh government believes that the opposition parties were politicizing the issue even as it has miserably failed to nab the culprits responsible for the burning of the chariot. Since the police could not make a breakthrough in its probe, the Chief Minister has entrusted the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Doubts on claiming Rs. 84 lakh insurance for Antarvedi chariot

2

The endowments department has insured Antarvedi chariot for over Rs. 84 lakh. It is well known the chariot was reduced to ashes in a fire last Sunday. Initially, it was estimated that the temple would recover the insurance amount because it was a fire mishap. But, many problems were coming up in ascertaining the actual reason behind the fire. There were also doubts whether this would remain a mystery till the Central Bureau of Investigation would really launch a full length investigation and perform a miracle.

Till the actual reasons were scientifically established by some agency of the Government, it would not be possible for claiming the insurance amount. Moreover, there was the angle of negligence on the part of the endowment officials in security aspects. It is the duty of the temple officials to ensure proper functioning of the CCTV cameras keeping surveillance on the chariot and its shed. For various reasons, the CCTV cameras at the chariot location did not work. They were in repair for over two months or so.

On account of all these reasons, many doubts were cropping up on getting insurance on the burnt chariot. Meanwhile, the officials began efforts for making a new chariot with Rs. 95 lakh sanctioned by the Government.

Antarvedi incident attack on Hindu religion: Naidu

12

TDP president and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed anguish over the growing attacks on idols of Hindu temples across the state ever since the YSRCP rode to power.

The TDP president demanded a judicial probe into the burning of Antarvedi temple chariot in East Godavari. He said there was a larger conspiracy to defame Hindu religion and the chariot fire mishap was not a mere accident. He suspected the hand of anti-social elements and sought a thorough judicial inquiry into the incident.

Naidu said the fire mishap at the Antarvedi Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple is not an isolated case. Similar incidents occurred at various temples in the state, including Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy temple. He said several idols were destroyed in temples across the state in the more than one year rule of Jagan Mohan Reddy. Naidu said this is a clear case of an attack on Hindu religion.

Short circuit ruled out in Antarvedi temple chariot fire

1

The mystery behind the burning of Antarvedi temple chariot is deepening with each passing hour. The authorities have dismissed the possibility of an electrical short circuit. There are no electrical wires or lights installed on the 50-ft shed in which the 40-ft chariot was parked. With this, efforts were on to find out other possible reasons. The investigating officials are facing many challenges especially due to the fact that the CCTV cameras fixed to monitor the chariot were not working for the last one month or so.

There were over 30 CCTV cameras on the temple premises. About 10 of them were in repair. The temple authorities were busy with various other things and overwork that they could not get them repaired. This has made the task of unravelling the mystery behind the fire even more difficult and virtually impossible.

Now, the officials are bent upon making a guessing game. They have taken into custody a mentally unstable person hailing from West Bengal as he has been wandering in the vicinity of the temple for some time now. But that did not make much progress. Some other persons close to the area were also being questioned. One remote possibility is that honey bee hunters might have climbed the chariot at night to avoid getting bitten by the bees. They would have lit up some flames to catch honey and that would have caused the fire.

Whatever, though the watchman spotted and alerted about fire within a few minutes, the chariot was reduced totally to ashes by the time fire tender arrived from far away Razole. Officials say that flames were immediately doused but the chariot stood there like a burnt out skeleton. Indeed, a tough time for the ruling YSRCP and administration.
