IMAX hopes for ‘Avatar’ effect from ‘Baahubali 2’ in India

The pace of growth for IMAX, a Canadian entertainment technology innovator offering an immersive movie experience, has been sluggish in India.

But officials are hopeful that the resounding success of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, which was also released in IMAX format, will translate into a positive effect for its India footprint — just as James Cameron’s “Avatar” worked in its favour globally back in 2009.

“I think ‘Baahubali 2’ will have a very positive impact on IMAX number-wise, and will also drive more demand to develop more IMAX theatres,” John Schreiner, Senior Vice President of Theatre Development, IMAX Corporation, told IANS in an interview over phone from Moscow.

Citing how a successful film can impact the IMAX business in a dramatic way, he said: “Back in late 2009, IMAX had about 400 theatres around the world and then the movie ‘Avatar’ came.

“It kind of added the turbo charger to our business and we went from one level of development to another and our business today is over 1,200 screens all over the world with another 500 on the way. ‘Avatar’, and movies like that add a very big boost to our business.”

Schreiner said it would be fantastic if “Baahubali 2” could be their next “Avatar”.

The proprietary digital remastering technology of IMAX was used to enhance and make the image clearer, crisper and sharper for “Baahubali 2”, which has raked in a record-breaking Rs 1,500 crore plus worldwide. It had released in 66 select IMAX theatres across India, North America, Australia, the Middle East and Africa.

“Baahubali 2” was the third Indian film to get IMAX treatment after “Dhoom: 3” and “Bang Bang!”. International films keep the business going for theatres in the country.

“We’ve been in India since around 2000, but it took us a long time to grow. But in the last 18 months, we’ve opened about five new IMAX theatres in India — going from 12 to 17. We are pretty excited about the Indian market right now,” Schreiner said.

Just last month, PVR Cinemas, India’s largest exhibitor, signed a five-theatre deal with IMAX, in a bid to give the audience the most technologically-advanced movie-going experience.

Schreiner admits, though, that compared to other developing markets, India had been a little bit slower.

“There are a couple of reasons for that. It takes a long time to build a shopping mall in India. In a lot of other markets around the world, it takes about half of the time. Just the approval process in India can slow the pace down,” he said, pointing out how the brand will have its 50th theatre in Russia this year despite starting there in 2003.

“I think the government in India right now is making strides with GST coming in and simplifying Indian tax. I think that will work well for not only IMAX, but other businesses overall,” Schreiner added, hoping that restrictions on ticket prices in parts of the country would also be eased.

So far, IMAX theatres are present in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Noida and Pune.

“I think north India is somewhere we are under-penetrated at the moment and, obviously, Kolkata. Those would be the key markets that we are looking to expand in and we would like to increase our presence in Hyderabad.”

‘Baahubali 2’ copy was made in a Bihar theatre

A theatre in Begusarai district of Bihar was used to make a high-definition copy of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, and the same was used by a piracy gang to extort money from producers of the blockbuster, the Hyderabad police said.

The police have busted the Delhi-based inter-state movie piracy gang with the arrest of six persons, including Divakar Kumar, owner of Veena Cinema Hall at Tivhra in Begusarai.

Others who have been arrested are Rahul Mehta, Jitender Kumar Mehta, Taufiq, Md Ali, all from Delhi and Chandan from Bihar. Another accused from Bihar, Monu, is missing and on the run.

The accused will be presented before a court here on Wednesday.

Interestingly, Jitender and Toufiq were also arrested in 2015 for making a pirated copy of “Baahubali: The Beginning”, the first movie in the successful franchise.

While Rahul Mehta, who was in Hyderabad to extort money from the “Baahubali” production banner Arka Mediaworks Entertainment Ltd, was arrested, others were nabbed in Delhi and Bihar and brought to Hyderabad on transit warrant.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Crime Station) Avinash Mohanty, Arka representative Prasad Devineni had lodged a complaint on April 29 that they received a call from someone posing as film anti-piracy activist, demanding Rs 15 lakh.

The caller told the firm that he has a pirated copy and warned that if the money was not paid, he would upload it on internet.

However, instead of arresting the caller by tracking his phone, the police decided to go for a thorough probe to reach the roots of the piracy racket. On their advise, the production firm engaged the caller in a dialogue and sought proof of the pirated copy. He sent a sample video and it turned out to be high-definition copy of the movie.

The police, with the help of experts, found that the film was copied from a theatre in Begusarai, breaching satellite technology security.

While Arka representatives continued dialogue with Rahul Mehta by inviting him to Hyderabad, the police continued their probe and arrested the theatre owner. However, Monu, a former employee of one of the satellite broadcasters of the movie who copied the movie, managed to escape.

The police arrested Rahul in Hyderabad and on the basis of his information nabbed other members of the gang in Delhi.

Baahubali 2 interval episode inspired by Pawan’s enviable fan following

Pawan Kalyan’s craze in Telugu states needs no special introduction. In many Mega family audio events and other filmy events, the Powerstar sloganeering has become quite common. Well, interestingly Pawan’s cult fan following has inspired Baahubali script writer Vijayendra Prasad to weave the engrossing interval episode in Baahubali 2.

Speaking to a leading Telugu daily, Vijayendra Prasad revealed that it was Pawan’s enviable fan following that has inspired the interval block of Baahubali 2. Vijayendra Prasad said that when he was in a dilemma about the presentation of interval scene in which Bhallaladeva was to be crowned the king of Mahishmati, he came across an audio event in which Pawan Kalyan’s fans raised the ‘Powerstar Powerstar’ slogans despite his absence. This has flattered the ace writer. Inspired by Pawan’s adulation among his followers, Vijayendra Prasad scripted the interval block in Baahubali 2.

In the meantime, Baahubali 2 is unstoppable in all territories. The film has collected 200 Crores gross on its opening day and set for a strong first weekend.

Early morning shows of S.S Rajamouli’s magnum opus “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” were cancelled on Friday due to financial issues in Tamil Nadu, industry sources said.

‘Baahubali 2’: Hype by makers, expectations by fans touch new highs

Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali? An enigma that has been on the mind of every Indian since the last 21 months, will finally get unveiled on Friday with the release of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”. If trade pundits and films experts are to be believed, filmmaker S.S. Rajamoulis magnum opus will set new benchmarks in Indian cinema.

Released in July 2015, ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ — the first film in the epic fantasy franchise — raked in over Rs 600 crore at the box office while leaving fans amazed with its grandiose sets, unprecedented action sequences and astounding storyline. Thus, fans across the world keenly await “Baahubali 2”, which will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam in over 6500 screens across India.

The film features Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Tamannaah in the lead.

“I have sky high expectations from ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ and I believe it’s going to make records. Expectations from first film were not that big. Despite that‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ worked so well. The way it performed is the reason why expectations are so huge from the second part,” Mumbai-based distributor Rajesh Thadani told IANS.

“This film has the potential to create new benchmarks in cinema. There have been films in the past which have had big hype, but ‘Baahubali’ is an exception. It will definitely open doors for the southern industry in other regions,” Thadani added.

Trade expert Taran Adarsh said “Baahubali 2” will get a “hurricane” at the box office, which has not witnessed huge footfalls for the last few weeks now.

“The weather may be hot and humid, but the box office is ice-cold… Await ‘Baahubali 2′ to reactivate film business… Expecting a hurricane at the box office,” Adarsh tweeted last week.

In north India, Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan is expecting a “miracle” with the film.

“Advance booking for the film is doing great. There are discussions going on between exhibitors and distributors regarding the profits in north India. The hype of the film is really huge amongst the masses. It might break all the records at the box office,” Mahajan told IANS.

Ashish Saksena, COO-Cinemas, BookMyShow said that they are witnessing an “unprecedented advance booking” for “Baahubali 2”.

“We have already sold over one million tickets across languages, even when the bookings have been live for just over a day. Though the film is largely perceived to be loved by South Indian audience, the response from Hindi speaking markets has been highly encouraging as well,” Saksena told IANS.

In South, “Baahubali 2” will release in around 650 screens in Tamil Nadu. According to trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, it’s the biggest release for a film in the state.

“Even Rajinikanth’s ‘Enthiran’ and ‘Kabali’ released in just over 500 screens. The craze for ‘Baahubali’ is phenomenal and unprecedented. The buzz is bigger than it has ever been for a big Tamil film. Tickets are sold out everywhere,” Pillai told IANS.

Unlike other states, where the ticket prices have been hiked in huge numbers, in Tamil Nadu, the film’s ticket is being sold at the nominal price of Rs 120 due to the price cap by the government.

Pillai added that the film’s release timing is perfect.

“It’s the summer vacation for kids. The film is going to have a dream run for first four days as May 1 (Labour Day) happens to be holiday. It’s a very well planned release and I have been told the team locked the release date nearly eight months ago,” he said.

In Kerala, meanwhile, Global United Media is releasing the film in over 300 screens.

“This is the biggest release ever for a non-Malayalam film. This is the kind of film which doesn’t get made every day. Since the release of ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, the total number of theatres in Kerala has increased which has automatically paved the way for a wider release for the second part.

“The film is going to set new benchmarks for Indian cinema,” Prem Menon, Managing Director, Global United Media, told IANS.

The buzz around the film’s release is even higher in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, say experts.

So, one can say that the stage is perfectly set for “Baahubali 2” to prove is mettle and set new records in Indian cinema.

CBFC member review on Baahubali 2

Baahubali 2, the most awaited film in the history of Indian cinema, has not been screened anywhere yet so theoretically the review shouldn’t come out yet. However, a prominent Censor Board member, who watched the film during the censor process of Hindi version, has reportedly divulged some key details that are worth to be mentioned as a mini review.

As per the CBFC member, Baahubali 2 is bigger than the first part in each and every aspect. Despite the runtime is close to three hours, there is not a single dull moment in the epic film. The visual effects in the action sequences this time are on par with the Hollywood blockbusters. And, the answer to the biggest question that held the interest of audiences on the second part for two long years – ‘Why Katappa killed Baahubali”, will leave everyone appalled and disbelieving, as per CBFC member.

The confrontation scenes between Prabhas and Rana will leave audiences awestruck. He added that their one-to-one battle is heart-stopping. “The duo fight like restless lions in a cage but something keeps them from tearing apart each other. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal what it is. The stunts, the spectacle, the performances, emotional quotient and the visual effects are superior to the first part. Audiences will come out very happy but they will also be very sad realizing that it is the end of Baahubali saga,” he concluded.

What Exactly did Sathyaraj Say Offending Kannadigas

While fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Baahubali 2, the epic second part is all set to hit screens across the world in about a week. However, the film may not release in Karnataka amidst the nonsensical protests from some pro-Kannada groups. An erstwhile statement against sentiments of Kannada people by senior Tamil actor Sathyaraj who played the role of Kattappa in Baahubali is being shown as the sole reason for these protests. So, what exactly did Sathyaraj say about a decade ago that has come back to haunt Baahubali now?

Back in 2008, Tamil Nadu govt. initiated the Hogenakkal Integrated Drinking Water Project despite the Karnataka government was vehemently opposing it. At that time, then members of the Nadigar Sangam openly rebuked the Karnataka government and the key protesters against the TN project. In his speech then, Sathyaraj allegedly called Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj , “a comedian”.

Now, Kannadiga groups headed by Nagaraj found the release time of Baahubali 2 as a perfect opportunity to force the actor seek an apology. No distributor has acquired the theatrical rights of Baahubali 2 in Karnataka because of the fear of backlash from the pro-Kannadiga groups. Unless Sathyaraj seeks an apology, the smooth release of Baahublai 2 doesn’t look a possibility as of now.

Meanwhile, Rajamouli took to social media to make an appeal to the Kannadigas. He requested them that their protest isn’t affecting Sathyaraj but their film which has been made with lot of passion, hard work and money.

Please don’t target us: Rajamouli on Karnataka issue

Filmmaker S.S Rajamouli on Thursday requested to the people that “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, slated for release on April 28, should not be targeted for some comments made by actor Sathyaraj nine years ago.

Following some allegedly inflammatory comments made by actor Sathyaraj over the Cauvery row, pro-Kannada organisations have been protesting against the release of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” in Karnataka.

To facilitate smooth release of the film in the state, these organisations have demanded an apology from the actor who plays the character Kattappa in the movie.

“Sathyaraj sir is not the producer or director of the film. He is one among the many artists who have worked in the film. If this movie doesn’t release as planned in Karnataka, he has nothing to lose. It’s unfair to target the film because of some comments he had made,” Rajamouli said in a video message.

He went on to add that people shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to watch the film due to Sathyaraj’s comments.

“I have already discussed the situation with Sathyaraj sir. I don’t have the authority or the energy to talk more on this issue. I request that our film doesn’t get dragged into this controversy,” he said.

As of Thursday, the protest against the release of “Baahubali 2” continues in the city. The groups have threatened to go on a state-wide bandh, if Sathyaraj doesn’t apologise, on the day of the release of the film.

More Confident About Baahubali 2 Than Baahubali: SS Rajamouli

Baahubali broke the language barrier to become a pan-Indian hit in 2015 but director S S Rajamouli says he was not as sure-footed about the first part as he is for the upcoming sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion. The first movie ended on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience with the question- ‘Why did Katappa kill Baahubali?’, which became a catch-phrase and sustained interested in the sequel.

“We were a little nervous during the first part but for this one we are quite confident because there has been a big fan-base which has been following it since the past two years. During this time, none of them lost interest in the film and it kept on going,” Rajamouli says. “Everyone wants to know the answer to the question,

‘WKKP’ (Why Did Katappa Kill Baahubali). We are quite upbeat about it,” he told reporters here last evening.

The two-part epic-fantasy stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah and Anushka Shetty in lead roles. Rajamouli says it was wonderful of South Indian star Prabhas to dedicate himself fully for years to Baahubali despite being a top hero of the industry. “The whole film ‘Baahubali’ was possible because of this man (Prabhas) who being a top hero in south gave three and a half years for the film. I don’t think we could’ve done it (the film) without him,” he says.

The filmmaker, however, says the franchise is so huge that no person, including himself, can be bigger than the project. “I think whether the director or producer or any other professional involved in it, we are all being carried on a big ship called Baahubali,” he says.

“‘Baahubali’ is such a big thing, we being the people who worked on it, are getting the attention. I don’t think I am a bigger person than the project,” Rajamouli says. He was speaking at the IMAX poster launch of Baahubali: The Conclusion, which is scheduled to release on April 28.
