“Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” was released three years ago on this day, and the blockbuster’s cast — including Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Tamannaah — took to social media to express nostalgia about the project.

The “Baahubali” franchise turned Telugu actor Prabhas into a superstar overnight. Calling “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” the “biggest film” of his life, Prabhas shared a photo from the sets of the film on Instagram.

S Rajamouli who made it one of the most memorable projects. Baahubali 2 completes three years and I’m delighted for all the love the film and I have received.”

Baahubali 2 in China : Collections plunge after first weekend

0

India’s biggest motion picture Baahubali : The Conclusion failed to repeat its global success in China, where it released in more than 7000 Screens last Friday.

After embarking on a phenomenal start with $ 2.43 M on its opening day securing the third biggest opener for Indian film, the riveting action spectacle failed to capture the attention of Chinese audience as it collected only moderate figures in its first weekend ( $ 7.7 M – 51 Crores approx).

Further, the collections witnessed a huge plunge on its first Monday as it managed to rake in only a meagre 6.8 Crores taking the tally close to 60 Crores.

The poor word of mouth has impacted the collections after a good start and trade circles reckon that the film might not even touch the 100 Crore mark in its full run.

Indian blockbuster Baahubali 2: The Conclusion will soon get a theatrical release in China. According to Variety, the fantasy action film will be released by EStars Media, which also handled Baahubali: The Beginning, in China. The makers have received the censor certificate, but have not yet decided a release date.

Directed by S S Rajamouli and starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia, Baahubali 2 was released in India in April last year. Baahubali: The Beginning had earned $123 million total in China. The magnum opus follows Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which earned an astonishing USD 195 million on release in China, Secret Superstar and Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

As far as the domestic earnings of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is concerned, the film smashed all the records to become the first film to cross Rs 500 crore mark in Bollywood. Also approved for release in China is 2017 drama Hindi Medium. Featuring Irrfan Khan and Pakistani actor Saba Qamar, the film is set to hit Chinese theatres on April 4.

Bollywood films like Aamir Khan’s Dangal and Secret Superstar have performed well at the Chinese box office boosting the total lifetime collection of the films. The latest one to join the squad of Bollywood blockbuster films in China is Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Surprises and shockers: ‘Baahubali’ sets Rs 500 cr bar for Bollywood

0

‘Baahubali’ sets Rs 500 cr bar for Bollywood

The highest earning film in India this year — “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” — was neither an original Hindi movie nor featured an established star. That says a lot about the changing dynamics of Bollywood which, in 2017, saw a mixed bag of projects that drew audiences mainly with solid content, notwithstanding star power.

Salman Khan’s “Tubelight”, Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jab Harry Met Sejal” and Ranbir Kapoor-starrer “Jagga Jasoos” are cases in point. They failed to elicit the expected response despite the buzz — falling flat in such a way that Salman and Shah Rukh reportedly compensated the distributors for the losses they incurred due to their movies.

There is no centralised agency to record Bollywood’s box office numbers. But as per trade experts, while no Bollywood film has so far managed to cross the Rs 400 crore mark at the domestic box office, S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” — featuring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati and Anushka Shetty — did the unexpected by minting Rs 510.99 crore.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, President of the Film and Television Producers Guild of India, says “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” — the sequel to hugely successful fantasy drama “Baahubali: The Beginning” — was a game changer as “a dubbed Telugu language film became the biggest Hindi language blockbuster of all time”.

“It really says a lot to everyone who works within Hindi cinema. It says that we can’t make any excuses. ‘Baahubali’, in conventional terms, had everything going against it. The Hindi audience has traditionally not looked at southern stars as appealing and those who featured in ‘Baahubali’ had no name recognition in the Hindi market.

“Dubbed movies were always considered to be weaker at the box office because of the fact that they were not in the original language. But ‘Baahubali’ has come and dispelled all those myths,” Kapur told IANS.

Largely, it boils down to the fact that “if you give people a cinematic experience and have the confidence and the gusto and the flair to be able to tell that story uninhibitedly in the way you want to tell it, then the audience will come and watch the film,” Kapur added.

As far as Bollywood originals are concerned, nine films marched past the Rs 100 crore benchmark in a year when the central government introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) — for tickets below Rs 100, it stands at 18 per cent and for tickets above Rs 100 at 28 per cent.

“Tiger Zinda Hai” turned out to be the highest grosser among Bollywood originals with a collection of Rs 206.4 crore till December 28.

Even the team of Reliance Entertainment-backed “Golmaal Again” laughed its way to the bank with a collection of Rs 205.67 crore.

There were others — “Raees” (Rs 137.71 crore), “Kaabil” (Rs 103.84 crore), “Jolly LLB 2” (Rs 117 crore), “Badrinath Ki Dulhania” (Rs 116.68 crore), “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” (Rs 134.22 crore), “Judwaa 2” (Rs 138.61 crore) and the latest, “Tiger Zinda Hai” (Rs 173 crore and counting).

“Tubelight”, though not counted among Salman’s hits, also went past the Rs 100 crore mark by minting Rs 119.26 crore.

According to Kamal Gianchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures, “Tubelight” was one example of how “stars on their own are not enough to pull in audiences”.

“See Salman in ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’. It’s an established franchise but also a film with a strong nationalistic flavour and content that’s appealing to a broad section of people. It has been a respite at the box office, but see the same Salman in a long and slow film like ‘Tubelight’, which was not suitable to the actor’s image,” Gianchandani told IANS.

“Well-drafted, well-written, well-packaged and well-presented content with a star, creates magic at the box office,” added Gianchandani, who appreciated how smaller films like “Newton” and “Tumhari Sulu” did well.

“Each time there was a good film, the audiences came out in big numbers and supported it.”

“Naam Shabana”, “Hindi Medium”, “Sachin – A Billion Dreams”, “Mom”, “Lipstick Under My Burkha”, “Bareilly Ki Barfi”, “Shubh Mangal Saavdhan”, “Secret Superstar” and “Fukrey Returns” were some such titles which found resonance with the audience. As always, content was king.

The movies which fell flat against expectations include “Ok Jaanu”, “Rangoon”, “Begum Jaan”, “Noor”, “Sarkar 3”, “Meri Pyaari Bindu”, “Raabta”, “A Gentleman”, “Simran”, “Bhoomi”, “Haseena Parkar”, “Chef” and “Firangi”.

Besides that, the big-ticket “Padmavati”, which was due to release on December 1, got caught in a spiralling controversy which has kept it away from hitting the screens.

Girish Johar, film business and trade analyst, told IANS: “Had ‘Baahubali’ not been there, Bollywood would have performed poorly. Hindi films per se haven’t done great. ‘Padmavati’ was supposed to release in December, but it did not, so all eyes were on ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’.

“I think we are still falling short of 10-12 per cent on the annual box office returns, and that’s a depressing way to end the year.”

The solution, as Kapur pointed out, lies in “better stories and better scripts”.

According to the latest reports, Baahubali 2 is set for a grand release all over Japan on December 29th. The film has been censored with a ‘ G ‘ certificate by the Japan censor board, which is equivalent to a U certificate in India. The film has been dubbed into Japanese language and a local distribution house has bagged the rights from Arka Media works, the production unit behind Baahubali franchise, for a hefty price.

Rajinikanth is the only Indian hero to create an impact at the Japanese box office with his film Muthu which ran for record number of weeks. Baahubali 1 didn’t perform as per the trade expectations in Japan. It remains to be seen how the second and final part is going to received by audience there.

Can 2.0 breach Baahubali 2 in overseas ?

0

India’s biggest hit ‘Baahubali 2’ has undoubtedly set very high standards for upcoming films in terms of box office collections. Especially in overseas, the visual extravaganza has emerged as a huge blockbuster by collecting more than $ 20 M, which is an unprecedented box office record for Indian films.

If there is ever a South Indian Indian film that has a chance to go closer or outdo Baahubali 2 run in overseas, then it should definitely be Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated science fiction thriller 2.0 which is the sequel to the 2010 smash hit Robot. Most expensive Indian film ever, 2.0 has a chance to break the box office records of Baahubali 2 in overseas if it manages to garner good talk.

Baahubali 2 was such a huge hit because Hindi audience lapped up the film big time more than the South audience. So, Rajinikanth’s unparalleled popularity and the craze for Shankar’s films among Hindi audience in overseas will be an added advantage for the 2.0 to set new benchmarks at the box office there. If Hindi audience embraces the film well, it has a good chance to surpass Baahubali 2 collections in overseas.

2.0 is being shot as a 3D film and the recently released making video has hinted that the film will be high on technical standards with eye popping visuals.

The film is getting ready to hit the screens in January next year. Let’s see if 2.0 can outshine Baahubali 2 at the overseas box office or not.

All Time BLOCKBUSTER

Highly anticipated sequel of Baahubali, “Baahubali : The Conclusion” has collected a worldwide distributor share of Rs 310 Cr, which is a record by miles. The film surpassing it’s predecessor’s worldwide collections (186 Cr) in Telugu states alone speaks volumes about this humongous success.

The film went on to create All Time records in Hindi and Tamil film industries besides Tollywood.

BLOCKBUSTERS

1. Khaidi No.150 – This film marks the comeback of Megastar Chiranjeevi after a long gap of 9 years. It has opened to huge numbers with an All Time Record Day One and went on to become a Blockbuster by the end of it’s run.

With a worldwide distributor share of Rs 102 Cr, Khaidi No.150 became the second film after “Baahubali” to collect over Rs 100 Cr share.

2. Sathamanam Bhavati – The film was an underdog at its time of release since it clashed with two big films – Khaidi N0.150 and Gautamiputra Satakarni. Despite the relatively limited release, the family entertainer has taken a good opening and went on to dominate the two rival biggies from 3rd week.

Worldwide Distributor Share of this Dil Raju production venture is – 33.60 Cr, almost 3 times return on investment.

Super Hit :

Nenu Local – The film has ended up as second career best grosser for Nani. [Worldwide distributor share : 32.65 Cr]

Hits :

Above Average :

1. Gautamiputra Satakarni – It is the 100th film of senior hero Nandamuri Balakrishna. After a good first week, the film has slowed down due to the domination of Shatamanam Bhavati in A centres and Khaidi No.150 in B,C centres. The film has incurred minor losses to some buyers and ended up with worldwide distributor share of Rs 49.70 Cr

2. Kittu Unnadu Jagratha – This film was benefited from the vacuum of movies in theatres for first three weeks in March until the release of Katamarayudu. It has collected a distributor share of 6 crore and incurred minor losses to some buyers.

Average :

Ami Thumi – Shoestring budget of the film and the decent run in A centres helped it attain average status at box office.

Duvvada Jagannadham – After an excellent extended opening weekend, the film has dropped suddenly. This Bunny starrer is expected to end up as a loss venture for each and every buyer involved. With over 66 Cr share worldwide in 10 days, DJ is expected to collect around 69 Cr in its full run. The film’s theatrical rights were sold for around Rs 80 crore.

P.S – Bunny has good market in Kerala and the Malayalam version is slated to hit screens on July 14.

Flops :

Katamarayudu – Expectations were high on this Pawan Kalyan starrer as it was the first biggie of summer. The film however has ended up as a flop by raking in a worldwide distributor share of just Rs 62.15 Cr.

Disasters:

1. Om Namo Venkatesaya – This Nagarjuna Akkineni starerr is one of the biggest disasters ever in not just the actor’s career but in the history of Tollywood. The film’s buyers lost over 60% of their investment. [Worldwide distributor share – 10.1 Cr]

2. Winner – Sai Dharam Tej’s utter routine commercial entertainer opened strongly on Day One but collections nosedived on day Two itself. And, the film ended up as a disaster

3. Mister – This Srinu Vytla directorial starring Varun Tej in lead role had a decent opening, and it was declared a washout on Day Two itself. The film was produced by the same makers who bankrolled Winner.

4. Rogue – The very-prolific Puri has churned out this disaster. The film had very less expectations and it failed to impress even the director’s fans.

Dubbing Films:

As many as 38 films were dubbed into Telugu from other languages including English. Of the total, only 2 films succeeded as box office. Aadhi’s horror comedy Marakathamani and Hollywood action film “Fast & Furious 8” are the only two profitable films.

While Lawrence’s “Sivalinga” collected average revenue, Suriya’s highly anticipated “Yamudu 3” ended up as a disaster.

A date for the release of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” in China is yet to be set, says producer Shobu Yarlagadda. However, he confirmed they have already “begun the process”.

“Our distributor, who had also released ‘Dangal’, ‘PK’ and ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ in China, is working towards the release at the earliest. It should take a couple of more months. No date has been firmed up yet,” Yarlagadda told IANS.

With Aamir Khan’s “Dangal” creating a box office storm in China by becoming the first Indian film to mint over Rs 1000 crore, all eyes are on “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”.

On Thursday, “Dangal” was given a month-long extension in China to continue its successful run in cinemas.

“Baahubali 2” is expected to do well in China too.

Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, “Baahubali 2” stars Prabhas and Rana Daggubati as warring cousins who fight for the ownership of an ancient kingdom.

The film also features Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan and Sathyaraj.
