Don 3 on cards

The 6-year long waiting for one of India’s biggest action franchises is finally over. After Don and Don 2, Sharukh-Farhan duo is all set to gear up to enthrall action movie lovers once again with a suave anti-hero action thriller.

The Don films comprise a Hindi-language action series that focuses on a ruthless and powerful crime boss who is as skillful at evading police capture as he is at minting money in the Malaysian drug trade. The original Don character was played by Amitab Bachan in 1978 and it created history in Hindi Film industry. The script for this was provided by Salim-Javed duo. When Don remake was announced with Sharukh in 2000s, it raised many a eyebrow as Amitab was action hero and could do full justice to the character while Sharukh had mostly image of a romantic hero. But surpassing all expectations and clearing off all doubts, he gave riveting performance and Don, released in 2006 was a stupendous hit. Sharukh’s Don(2006) was directed by Farhan Akthar, son of Javed Akthar who provided script for Amithab’s Don(1978). The clever twists he gave to original were well applauded. It took almost 5 years to get a sequel for it and Don-2, released in 2011 also a super hit, collecting more than 200 crores. With both the films were extremely well received, now, SRK’s fans are eagerly waiting for the next part of the franchise and Farhan has an update on the same. The multi-talented actor and director said that he is still thinking about it and the project is still at an idea stage. However, Producer Ritesh Sidhwani posted a photo of Don star Shah Rukh Khan on Instagram, along with hashtag #don3. He closed with a tantalizing finish: “Hmmmm #staytuned.” If reports are to be believed, in Don-3, Deepika Padukone will replace Priyanka Chopra, who acted in Don (2006) and Don (2011).

1978 Amithab’s Don movie was remade with NTR as Yugandhar(1979), though the movie is mere hit it didn’t create the sensation that the original created. In Tamil, it was remade as Billa(1980) with Rajnikant and that is also a commercial success. When Sharukh’s Don was released and became hit in 2006, in Tamil Ajit remade 1980’s Billa with the same title and that is also a hit. The same movie was again remade into Telugu as “Billa” with Prabhas as hero. One doubted at that time, if Tamils had remade “Billa(1980)” instead of Don, why Telugu makers didn’t do the same with Yugandhar and simply remade Billa. Anyway this movie is also a decent hit. Again in 2012, After Don-2 released in 2011, Ajit made a movie Billa-2 (dubbed into Telugu as David Billa). But surprisingly, this is not a remake or sequel but it is a prequel i.e. it talks about story that happened before ” Billa”. This movie was directed by Chakri Toleti. Do you remember the small boy in “Sagara Sangamam” movie who takes funny photographs of Kamal hassan? He is the same guy. Billa-2 was so bad that some reviewers commented, this guy did not know how to take photos in his childhood and doesn’t know how to direct a movie as an adult.

Anyway, now with Don-3 on the cards, and if it becomes hit again, we may see another round of remakes and sequels in Telugu and Tamil too.
