Will meet Modi in France, do best on Kashmir: Trump

After speaking with the leaders of India and Pakistan and urging them to reduce tensions over Kashmir, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the weekend at the G7 in France, and he would do his best to mediate in the issue.

Addressing reporters in the White House, President Trump said: “Kashmir is a very complicated place. You have the Hindus, and you have the Muslims, and I wouldn’t say they get along so great. And that’s what you have right now.”

“And you have millions of people who want to be ruled by others, and maybe on both sides, and you have two countries that haven’t gotten along in a long time.

“And frankly it’s a very explosive situation. I spoke to Prime Minister Khan, and yesterday I spoke to PM Modi; and they are both friends of mine, and they are great people, they’re great people. And they love their countries, and they are in a very tough situation.

“Kashmir is a very tough situation, and this has been going on for decades, and decades; shooting, and I don’t mean shooting like shooting a rifle, but major shooting of howitzers, of heavy arms, and this has been going on for a long, long period of time.

“But I get along really well with both of them, As you know Prime Minister Khan was here just recently.

“And I’m going to meet Prime Minister Modi, I will be with PM Modi over the weekend, in France.

“And I think we’re helping the situation, but there’s tremendous problems between the two countries. And I will do the best I can to mediate or do something,” he said.

On Monday, Trump spoke on the phone with his “two good friends” Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Pakistan’s Imran Khan and urged them to work towards reducing tensions over Kashmir. He also advised Pakistan to “moderate its rhetoric with India” over Kashmir.

“Spoke to my two good friends, Prime Minister Modi of India, and Prime Minister Khan of Pakistan, regarding Trade, Strategic Partnerships and, most importantly, for India and Pakistan to work towards reducing tensions in Kashmir. A tough situation, but good conversations!,” he tweeted.

Earlier, Trump first called up Modi on Monday during which they held a 30-minute talk.

Prime Minister Modi conveyed that “extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace”, in a reference to the Pakistani leadership spewing anti-India venom over the Kashmir issue.

A White House readout of his talk with Imran Khan said, “PresidentATrumpAspoke by telephone with Imran Khan to discuss the need to reduce tensions and moderate rhetoric with India over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Trump reaffirmed the need to avoid escalation of the situation, and urged restraint on both sides. The two leaders also agreed to work together to strengthen United States-Pakistan economic and trade cooperation.”

Modi calls up Trump, raises Pak’s anti-India rhetoric

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke with US President Donald Trump on phone and conveyed that “extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace”, in an obvious reference to the Pakistani leadership spewing anti-India venom over the Kashmir issue.

Days after the UN Security Council backed India in its efforts to bring in development in Kashmir after revoking its special status, Modi held a 30-minute call with Trump on Monday.

During the call, the two leaders covered bilateral and regional matters. The phone call was marked by the warmth and cordiality which characterises the relations between the two leaders, an MEA statement said.

The Prime Minister recalled their meeting in Japan’s Osaka on the margins of G-20 summit in end-June earlier this year.

Referring to their bilateral discussions in Osaka, he expressed the hope that the Commerce Minister of India and the US Trade Representative would meet at an early date to discuss bilateral trade prospects for mutual benefit.

In the context of the regional situation, Modi told Trump that the extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been regularly taking to Twitter to attack Modi, calling him a fascist and racist. Imran Khan has also been alleging that Modi is turning India into a Hindu supremacist country and that Muslims in India were being disenfranchised and “RSS goons were on the rampage”.

In his telephone call, PM Modi highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror and violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception, the statement said.

Modi reiterated India’s commitment to cooperate with anyone who followed this path, in fighting poverty, illiteracy and disease.

Recalling that Monday marked 100 years of the Independence of Afghanistan, he reiterated India’s longstanding and unwavering commitment to work for a united, secure, democratic and truly independent Afghanistan, the statement said.

New legislation seeks to protect work permits for spouses of H-1B visa holders

Two influential lawmakers from California have introduced legislation in the US House of Representatives to protect work authorisation of H-4 visa workers, a significant number of whom are Indian-American women.

The introduction of such legislation comes days after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that it would publish this month the long-promised regulation that would prevent the work authorisation to spouses on H-4 visas.

H-4 visas are issued to the spouses of H-1B visa holders, a significantly large number of whom are high-skilled professionals from India.

This week, the Trump administration announced plans to overturn current the DHS regulations that allow certain H-4 dependent spouses of H-1B visa holders who are stuck in green card backlogs to obtain employment authorisation, pursue their own professional goals and contribute to the US economy, said the lawmakers Anna G Eshoo and Zoe Lofgren.

Many H-4 visa holders are highly skilled professionals, and the DHS previously extended eligibility for employment authorisation to them recognising the economic burdens of families of many H-1B workers, particularly those who live in high-cost areas like Silicon Valley on a single income as they await green card approvals, they said.

Since the rule was implemented, over 100,000 workers, mainly women, have received employment authorisation, and the H-4 Employment Protection Act prohibits the Trump administration from revoking this important rule.

“H-4 visa holders deserve a chance to contribute to their local economies and provide for their families,” Eshoo said.

“This is a matter of economic fairness and this legislation ensures it will continue,” she added.

H-4 visa holders had obtained work permits under a special order issued by the previous Obama administration. Indian-Americans were a major beneficiary of this provision. More than one lakh H-4 visa holders have been beneficiary of this rule.

“While the Trump administration sits on its hands and does nothing, American citizens in-waiting are stuck in line for their number to come up,” Lofgren said.

“Nobody benefits from this system, least of all the American economy when H-1B dependent spouses are prohibited from working. Many of these are accomplished and qualified individuals whose skills we’ll lose to other countries unless the Administration finds a more sensible approach to immigration,” she said.

Last November, Eshoo and Lofgren originally introduced the H-4 Employment Protection Act.

In March 2018, Eshoo and Lofgren led 13 Members of Congress in writing to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, urging her to reconsider DHS’s proposal to revoke eligibility for employment authorisation to H-4 dependent spouses.

A 2015 rule issued by the Obama administration allows work permits for spouses who otherwise could not be employed while H-1B visa holders seek permanent resident status, a process that can take a decade or longer.

The H-1B programme offers temporary US visas that allow companies to hire highly skilled foreign professionals working in areas with shortages of qualified American workers.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has been talking about cracking down on the H- 1B visa scheme.

During his election campaign, President Trump promised to increase oversight of our H-1B and L-1 visa programmes to prevent its abuse.

Trump calls Apple CEO ‘Tim Apple’

San Francisco, March 7 (IANS): A blundering US President Donald Trump on Thursday addressed tech giant Apple’s CEO Tim Cook as “Tim Apple” while the latter sat there, nodding quietly during a meeting at the White House for the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board.

“We appreciate it very much, Tim Apple,” Trump told Cook during a meeting at the White House for the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board to discuss technology education and jobs, The Guardian reported.

Trump then reportedly went on about the “invasion” of immigrants over the southern border and human trafficking which he said had been going on for “a million years”, according to the Evening Standard.

A video featuring Trump and Cook also went viral on all social media platforms as users posted memes pertaining to the incident.

“‘Mr. Apple’ is sitting there like, ‘I can’t correct him because he’s the President but I can’t let him continue looking like an idiot! What do I do?” a YouTube user commented on the video.

“Donald Trump says his meeting with Tim Apple went better than his meeting with Bill Windows,” a tweet read.

Post the incident, some people declared Trump “unfit to be President”, suggesting him to undertake “immediate medical attention”.

Trump has a history of mispronouncing people’s names and even messing up the names of executives before. He once called Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed Martin CEO, Marillyn Lockheed.

On one occasion, Trump has been attacked for forgetting the name of public figures like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump plans to end birthright citizenship

0

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that he is planning to put an end to what he called the “ridiculous” law that grants citizenship to all children born in US territory.

“We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the US… with all of those benefits,” Trump said in an interview with the online daily Axios, reports Efe.

Trump did not mention the fact that more than two dozen other countries, including Mexico and Canada, also have similar laws authorising citizenship for anyone born in their territory.

“It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end,” he added.

During the 2016 election campaign, Trump had explored this idea, although experts say that he will face significant obstacles and unleash a prolonged legal battle if he tries to implement it since birthright citizenship is an explicit part of the Constitution.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution states: “All persons born or naturalised in the US and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the US and of the state wherein they reside.”

“It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t,” Trump said, adding that “You can definitely do it with an Act of Congress. But now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.”

The US President provided no details about that proposition, saying only that he had discussed the matter with his legal advisers in the White House.

The Democratic National Committee criticised Trump’s proposal as “obviously unconstitutional.”

“His intent is clear: To incite fear, divide our nation, and make vulnerable communities feel unsafe,” DNC spokesman Daniel Wessel said in a statement, adding “If you want leaders who will unite our country instead of divide it, you must vote on November 6.”

Trump’s plan would be directed against the US-born children of illegal immigrants and would not affect people with legal residence.

The escalation of the president’s anti-immigrant rhetoric comes during the final stretch of the election campaign for the November 6 midterm vote in which Republicans are seeking to maintain their majority in Congress.

Trump ‘looks forward’ to visiting India: US official

0

US President Donald Trump “looks forward” to visiting India but the timing will depend on his other commitments, according to a senior State Department official.

“I am certain that President Trump looks forward to being able to visit India at an appropriate time,” Alice Wells, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, told IANS in an interview.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Trump to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations next year.

Asked if Trump would come to the celebrations or would schedule his visit for another time, Wells said that the White House will decide taking into account “both the domestic commitments he has here in the US as well as overseas”.

Wells pointed to the steady stream of US officials who visit India as a symbol of the close ties between the two countries at the official level.

“As somebody who helps manage India relationship, it’s amazing the number of cabinet officials and high-level visitors that we have in India every month of the year,” she said.

“That too reflects the density of the ties between our countries that I think we have over 40 major dialogues that take place between our government agencies and departments.”

Modi first met Trump in Washington in 2017, and also at other multilateral meetings.

A military parade is the centre of the Republic Day celebrations and Trump has been a fan of such parades and wants the US to have one, too.

While these parades are held annually across the globe world as part of patriotic celebrations, the US does not have one.

At Trump’s suggestion a parade was scheduled for November on Veterans Day, which honours former servicemen, and this year it would coincide with the centenary of the conclusion of the First World War.

However, having never having held such a parade, the Defence Department postponed it to possibly next year.

Republican legislators unveil new US immigration Bill

0

A group of US Republican lawmakers has unveiled the details of an immigration bill that has the support of President Donald Trump.

It proposes to offer “Dreamers” the possibility of legally residing in the country although it does not provide for granting them citizenship, Efe news agency reported.

The supporters of the bill, who include Bob Goodlatte and Puerto Rico’s Raul Labrador, unveiled it at a press conference on Wednesday.

The bill complies with the “Four Pillars” that emerged out of the meeting between Trump and a group of lawmakers at a meeting on Monday at the White House.

The bill tackles the issue of the future of the 690,000 youths, known as “Dreamers”, who came to the US when they were children and were permitted to stay under former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which was established in 2012 and suspended by the Trump administration in September 2017.

When it was suspended, Trump called upon Congress to clarify the situation of the Dreamers before March 2018.

The initiative of the Republican lawmakers proposes that the beneficiaries of DACA be able to have a permit that allows them to reside in the US, without being deported, for three years, with the possibility of renewing this permission indefinitely.

It does not open the door to the possibility of obtaining US citizenship, one of the key points for the opposition Democrats.

The initiative also proposes to allot $30 billion for the construction of a controversial wall on the US border with Mexico and do away with the visa lottery programme, which benefits citizens of countries who have a low number of immigrants to the US.

It also aims to end the phenomenon of so-called “chain migration”, which sees US citizens and Green Card holders facilitate the entry of their family members to the country.

According to a summary of the proposals given to the press, the level of immigration would be reduced by 25 per cent in total.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders thanked the lawmakers on behalf of Trump and said the legislative proposal seeks to comply with the main priorities of the President for US citizens.

The President hopes to advance towards legislation that ensures border security, ends chain migration, does away with the visa lottery programme and tackles the DACA issue in a responsible manner, she added.

Anand Mahindra’s Tweet In Support Of Donald Trump’s New Decision

0

On a shocking note, a news broke on the internet last day, about new decision of Donald Trump that is to send back more than 500,000 Indian tech workers from the USA. As per the reports, the Department of Homeland Security of the US is said to be considering new regulations that would prevent H-1B visa extensions, as a part of president’s 2016 election campaign initiative “Buy American, Hire American.”

Reacting to it, the chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra expressed his support for the decision of Donald Trump and asked the IT professionals in the USA to come to India and help the country to rise. His tweet says as, “If that happens, then I say ‘Swagatam, Welcome Home.’ You’re coming back in time to help India Rise….”

We all know that H1B is a non-immigrant visa which allows the foreigners to work for the leading companies in their country and is typically issued for three to six years depending on the applicant and his employment. It is heard that the American government has taken this decision to open up opportunities for thousands of Americans.

As per the statement issued by Jonathan Withington, chief of media relations for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), “They are considering few changes in the Presidents order and requesting for a thorough review of employment-based visa programmes.”

H1B, L1 visas’ issue taken up with US: Prabhu

0

India has emphatically raised with the US administration the issue of H1B and L1 visas, which have facilitated the entry Indian IT professionals, thereby, immensely benefiting the American economy, Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Saturday.

“We raised very strongly the issue of Indian professionals and H1B and L1 visa issues,” Prabhu told reporters here at the end of his official visit to the US during which India held the first trade talks with the US following the election of President Donald Trump.

“We are raising this issue the US economy itself will find it difficult to cope with the reality because the country has immensely benefited by IT professionals penetrating into the market by offering services that has improved their productivity,” he said.

Following Trump’s election on a protectionist platform, the US has announced stricter norms for issuing the H1B and L1 visas.

During his visit over October 25-28, Prabhu held talks with the US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer under the framework of the bilateral Trade Policy Forum (TPF) and co-chaired India-US Commercial Dialogue along with US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

Prabhu said both countries agreed to address the issue of trade deficit by increasing and diversifying bilateral trade.

He also said India has sought easing of procedures for export of mangoes and pomegranates to the US.

Prabhu cited Ross as saying that reducing imports from India is not an option to address the trade deficit.

“The Commerce Secretary clearly said that trade deficit is an issue, but not by reducing imports from India but promoting more exports from the US to India which is absolutely a very positive and an extremely forward-looking idea, which we welcome,” Prabhu said.

Declaring that India would actually be able to buy more from the US in few years, he noted that New Delhi has started buying crude oil from Washington and there was great potential for America in the fast-expanding aviation market in India.

At the end of his visit, Prabhu leaves for Cuba, where he will be in Havana from October 28-31 to hold discussions on boosting bilateral trade.

Donald Trump administration makes H1B visa extension more difficult

0

In a new directive, the Trump administration has made it more difficult for the renewal of non-immigrant visas such as H1B and L1, popular among Indian IT professionals, saying that the burden of proof lies on the applicant even when an extension is sought.

Rescinding its more than 13-year-old policy, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said that the burden of proof in establishing eligibility is, at all times, on the petitioner. USCIS said the previous memorandum of 23 April, 2004 appeared to place this burden on this federal agency. “This memorandum makes it clear that the burden of proof remains on the petitioner, even where an extension of non- immigrant status is sought,” USCIS said in its latest memorandum issued on 23 October.

Under the previous policy, if a person was once found to be eligible for a work visa initially, they would usually be considered for extension of their visa. Now during every extension, they need to prove to the federal authorities that they are still eligible for the visa they apply for.

William Stock, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, said that the change is being made retroactively to people already living in the country and not just to new visa applicants. “In adjudicating petitions for immigration benefits, including non-immigrant petition extensions, adjudicators must, in all cases, thoroughly review the petition and supporting evidence to determine eligibility for the benefit sought. “The burden of proof in establishing eligibility is, at all times, on the petitioner,” the USCIS said.

The new policy is in line with the Trump administration’s goal to protect American workers from discrimination and replacement by foreign labour, Number USA website said. This new policy will make sure that only qualified H1B workers will be allowed to stay in the US and will help crackdown on visa fraud and abuse, it added.

India reiterates concern to US over H1-B visa issue

0

India on Tuesday reiterated its concern to the US over the latest bid to introduce stricter norms for issuance of H1-B visas which are largely availed by Indian IT firms.

The Indian concerns were conveyed during a meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and a US Congressional delegation from the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

“EAM @SushmaSwaraj flagged the issue of H1B visa as a strong concern and sought bipartisan Congressional support for the same,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted following the meeting between Sushma Swaraj and the nine-member delegation led by the House Committee’s Chairman Lamar Smith.

US President Donald Trump has called for stricter norms for issuance of H1-B visas, largely availed of by Indian IT firms. A private member’s bill was also introduced earlier this year in the US Congress by Democrat Zoe Lofgren which seeks to increase the minimum salary of an H1-B visa holder to a whopping $130,000 from the current minimum of $60,000.

Sushma Swaraj also raised the issue with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Session last month.

While Trump has spoken of restricting the H1-B visa system as part of his policy of putting Americans first, so far there have been no changes to it and for this year the same levels of 65,000 for general H1-B visas and 20,000 for those with advanced US degrees have been kept.

Indians get most of the H1-B visas, although there are no national quotas for the facility nor is it specifically designed for Indians.

In Tuesday’s meeting, Sushma Swaraj lauded the positive role of the US Congress in developing India-US strategic relations.

“EAM @SushmaSwaraj welcomed the strong desire of the delegation to strengthen cooperation in strategic, economic, S&T and space sectors,” Kumar said in a separate tweet.

Trump lists India in countries having links to the Narcos

0

President of United States Donald Trump has included India in the list the illegal drug producing or transporting countries.

India along with its neighbours, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Myanmar are in the list with 21 nations.

PTI reported that the primary reason of placing the countries are in the list is due to the combination of geographic, commercial, and economic factors, despite the respective governments carrying out the most diligent narcotics control law enforcement measures.

While Colombia is left with a serious warning, Trump designated Bolivia and Venezuela as countries that have failed demonstrably to adhere to its obligations under international counter narcotics agreements.

The 21 countries include India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, The Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela.

US, India tell Pakistan: Don’t let terrorists use your territory

0

In a strong message to Islamabad, the US and India have told Pakistan to ensure its territory is not used for terror attacks on other countries and asked it to bring to justice terrorists blamed for attacks in Mumbai and other places in India.

A joint statement issued after US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met here late on Monday stressed that terrorism was a global scourge that must be fought and terrorist safe havens rooted out in every part of the world.

The statement said India and the US will fight together “this grave challenge to humanity”.

The statement specifically referred to the terror attacks in Mumbai (2008) and Pathankot (2016) that it said were perpetrated by Pakistan-based groups and said the terrorists must be expeditiously brought to justice.

The two countries expressed their commitment to strengthen cooperation against terrorist threats from groups including Al Qaeda, ISIS, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), D-Company and their affiliates.

The LeT was blamed for the Mumbai mayhem of November 2008 that killed 166 Indians and foreigners including Americans. The Jaish was accused of attacking the Indian Air Force base at Pathankot in Punjab, leaving seven security personnel dead.

India appreciated the US decision to designate the Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist – just ahead of the Trump-Modi meet of Monday — “as evidence of the commitment of the US to end terror in all its forms”.

In their remarks to the media after delegation level talks, both Modi and Trump spoke of their commitment to combat terrorism.

Modi said battling terror and destroying terrorist hideouts would be an important part of mutual cooperation.

“We will enhance the intelligence exchange to boost coordination to address our common concerns over terrorism and will deepen our policy coordination accordingly.”

Modi said the two countries had agreed to increase cooperation to tackle increasing radicalisation, extremism and terrorism.

He said India and US were concerned over growing instability in Afghanistan due to terrorism. He said the two countries will maintain close consultation, communication and coordination to ensure peace there.

Trump said both India and the US had been struck by terrorism, “and we are both determined to destroy terrorist organisations and the radical ideology that drives them.

“We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism,” he said.

“Our militaries are working every day to enhance cooperation between our military forces. And next month, they will join together with the Japanese navy to take place in the largest maritime exercise ever conducted in the vast Indian Ocean.”

Answering questions later, Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar said the US move to declare Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist had sent a clear signal.

“You should take the step for what it is. It is in a sense fixing responsibility, highlighting a problem.

“There is a context to it… It is focusing on a particular group and a particular individual… I think none of us can really miss that message.”

The Foreign Secretary said there was a broad discussion on Pakistan. It was also extensive and very detailed on certain issues.

“We had very much converging viewpoint of what is the problem, let us diagnose the problem. And it is not just the Indian situation… A lot of discussion related to what was happening in Afghanistan.”

The joint statement announced increased cooperation to prevent travel by terrorists and to disrupt global recruitment efforts by terrorists by expanding intelligence-sharing and operational-level counter-terror cooperation.

They welcomed the commencement of the exchange of information on known and suspected terrorists for travel screening and vowed to strengthen information exchange on plans, movements and linkages of terrorist groups and moving of funds by terrorist groups.

PM should get firm US assurance on H1B visa issue: Congress

0

The Congress on Thursday said during his visit to the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should “demand and obtain credible and firm assurances from President Donald Trump that he will reverse his decision on granting H1B visa to Indian professionals”.

The party also demanded that the Prime Minister should respond and register protest over “disparaging obseravations” made by the US President about India while walking out of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

“Prime Minister will be travelling to the US. He should demand and obtain credible and firm assurances from US President Donald Trump that he will reverse his decision which discriminates against the Indian professionals for grant of H1B visa,” said Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma.

“There has been a drop of 37 per cent, whereas the Indian professionals constitute less than 0.06 per cent of the American workforce. We do not want mere statements and photographs,” he added.

“We want answers and also how the Prime Minister responds and registers our protest over the disparaging observations made about the Republic of India recently when the US decided to walk out of the Paris Agreement. We will wait for the PM’s response or reaction.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will for the first time meet President Donald Trump on June 26 at the White House.

Trump’s recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on fighting climate change created fissures in the India-US ties, especially with Trump commenting that India signed the pact only because it expected “billions and billions” in aid.

Donald Trump baffles with his ‘Covfefe’ tweet

US President Donald Trump sent a lot of people, including reporters, scurrying for dictionaries when he posted an odd tweet that used the word “covfefe”.

Trump wrote on Twitter in the early morning hours of May 31: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe”

It left many of his 31 million followers on Twitter baffled, and slightly concerned.

Most people think he meant to write “press coverage,” and it was a typo/spelling error. The strange tweet remained up for at least an hour after it first appeared (presumably Trump’s press team was sleeping), reported Heavy.com

More than 73,000 people retweeted the tweet in just 120 minutes, and it earned its own hashtag.

Twitter had a field day.

Jeff Posey @RattlesnakeShk posted: “…being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear #Covfefe shall not be infringed”

Clive Thompson @pomeranian99 tweeted: “Does no one on staff have his password? Have they tried the most common ones? 123456, or 11111, or, like … “password”?

So what does the word “covfefe” mean? Again, it means nothing apparently. It appears to be a typo/spelling error. It doesn’t come up in standard dictionaries, and, although a lot of people thought he meant to say press coverage, a few people thought he meant press conference.

This was Merriam-Webster’s reaction:

Merriam-Webster ? @MerriamWebster
“Wakes up.
“Checks Twitter.
Uh…
?? Lookups fo…
Regrets checking Twitter.
Goes back to bed.”

USA Today points out that, even if the president meant to write “despite the constant negative press coverage,” it’s still not clear what he was talking about since the sentence cuts off.

Much has been written about Trump’s novel use of Twitter. He says he uses it to communicate to people outside the media filter and, of course, supporters argue he won the election doing things his way. Recent reports indicated that his lawyers might start vetting his tweets, though. Judging from “covfefe,” it doesn’t appear that anyone’s vetting them yet, wrote Heavy.com.
