Gunasekhar’s struggle continues for Hiranyakashyapa

0

A star actor or their struggle in making the film happen will not save the film at Box Office. A film with good content will set landmarks. Gunasekhar – Samantha’s Shaakuntalam was a adisaster. Gunasekhar has worked so hard for it. After Rudramadevi, Gunasekhar went on to do Prathaparudrudu, which did not materialize. Later he collaborated with Suresh Productions and also with a few Bollywood producers for ‘Hiranyakashyapa’.

Gunasekhar and his team worked for almost 5 years on Hiranyakashyap. Rana Daggubati was part of the film but later Gunasekhar shifted his focus to Shaakuntalam. As Shaakuntalam turned out to be a dud, the production team who believed in Gunasekhar earlier walked out from Hiranyakashyapa. Currently, Gunasekhar is looking for some investors and there are chances of Rana walking out from the film.

Shaakuntalam Movie Review : Epic Failure

Shaakuntalam Movie Review

Shaakuntalam Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating 2/5

Gunasekhar is one of the directors who paved the way for the Telugu film industry toward big films. He is a director who is tempted to show the movie to the audience with emotions. He also has a good grasp of mythology. At the very beginning of his career, he received the National Award for Bala Ramayanam. Later he did a historical film like Rudramadevi. His latest film Shaakuntalam is based on a Sanskrit play Abhignana Sakuntalam written by Kalidasa. Abhignana Saakuntalam is a classic in Indian literature. Kalidasa’s writing style captivated the readers. But bringing such classics to the screen is also a challenge. Has Guna Sekhar succeeded in conveying the feeling of this love poem to the audience?

Story: Menaka, who came to break Vishwamitra’s penance on the order of Indra, comes physically close to the sage. As a result, a girl child is born. But that child conceived by humans has no entry into the divine world. With this, Menaka leaves the child in the asramam. A group of birds called Sakunthalamus abandons the child in the Kanvashram area. Kanva Maharshi (Sachin Khadekar) names the child Shakuntala (Samantha) and adopts it. The king of Hastinapuram is Dusyanta (Dev Mohan) comes to Kanvasrama while hunting wild animals. Seeing that Shakuntala is like an apsara, he falls in love at first sight. Shakuntala also likes Dusyantha and both get married in Gandharva style. Dusyanta promises Shakuntala that he will invite her to the kingdom with royal courtesies and introduce her to the people as a queen, gives her a signet ring, and leaves for the kingdom. Shakuntala becomes pregnant and after waiting months to see Dushyanta she goes to the kingdom of Dusyanta. But when she goes to Dushyanta’s kingdom, she faces an unexpected defeat in a full house. Seeing Shakuntala, Dusyanta says that he does not remember who he really is. At the same time, Shakuntala also loses the ring gifted by Dushyanta. As a result, everyone marks her as conspiring to bring disrepute to the Maharaja. How did Dushyanta forget Shakuntala? Why did he forget? How did Shakuntala lose her ring? Did Dusyantha remember the past again? That is the rest of the story.

Analysis :

Original story writer Kalidasa’s writing style is amazing. His imagination, narrative style, the sculpture makes the reader mesmerized. Abhignana Sakuntalam is also a wonderful work. Director Gunasekhar’s effort to capture such a work with the camera and unveil it on the silver screen is commendable, but it seems that the director’s imagination and skill are not enough to bring that work to the screen and mesmerize the audience. While filming such a classic as a movie, the judgment of what should be shot, what should be shown, and what is necessary for the movie should be very strong. Gunasekhar faltered in many places in this regard. The story begins with the episode of Chinnari Shakuntulam. The visuals of Kanvashram are impressive. The sage Kanva who saw a child in a tree bush tells the story of Menaka and Vishwamitra. But this story has been adjusted with sketch images.
The key moment is supposed to be the introduction of Shakuntula and Dusyanta. One gets the feeling that Gunasekhar has shot this scene very regularly. The depth of their love does not connect with the audience. Dushyanthu looks like a hero in an average commercial movie, but the sentimentality of the writing does not come across. The next scenes were stretched. In the middle, the track of Asura Mooka KalaNemi, and the anecdotes told by the friends in the ashram reduce the intensity of this love poem. The story takes a turn after the debut of Mohan Babu as Muni Durvasa. But it is not very impressive to show that this character’s entry is just for a twist. The major flaw in the movie is the audience will not connect with her pain and sorrow. The humiliation meted out to the Shakuntis in a full house is heartening. After knowing the truth, Dusyanthu’s search for love is not impressive. The track Menaka, who is moved by the sufferings of her daughter on the earth reminds us of a daily serial scene. The war between the Asuras and the Gods is also very cheap. Allu Arha’s presence before the end is impressive.

Performances: Carrying mythological characters is not easy. Samantha, who played the title role did her best. The emotional scenes are well done. But even in the love scenes, there is some pain in her eyes. This gives the feeling of the same expression in many places. Dev Mohan is good in the role of Dushyant but his chemistry with Samantha did not work. The love story would have been more connected if a star with some image was taken that role. Ananya, Madhubala, Sachin, Gautami, Shivabalaji all the other actors are adequate. Allu Arha looked good. Many of the 3D effects look erroneous. Especially the heads coming forward like a stork made it difficult to see. Mani Sharma’s songs are dull but the background music is good. The dialogues are not very impressive.

Original Sakunthulam is a beautiful love poem. Gunasekhar failed in making it a visual poem on the silver screen.

Gunasekhar lines up a series of mythological dramas

1

Talented filmmaker Gunasekhar returned back to the track with Rudhramadevi. The film ended up as a decent hit and Gunasekhar took a long time and penned the script of a mythological drama Hiranyakashyapa, the story of a demon god. Rana Daggubati will be playing the title role in this big-budget film which is delayed due to the pandemic. In this while, Gunasekhar took up Shaakuntalam and the film features Samantha in the lead role. The entire shooting portions will be completed this year and the film will have a pan-Indian release next year.

Utilizing the coronavirus pandemic break, Gunasekhar penned the script of Prathaparudhra which too happens to be a periodic mythological drama. Prathaparudhra was the last king of the Kakatiya dynasty and is the grandson of Rudhramadevi. Prathaparudhra is the sequel for Rudhramadevi and Gunasekhar worked on the script of Prathaparudhra during the lockdown time. He will narrate the script of Prathaparudhra to a top actor very soon and the film will start rolling after Gunasekhar completes the shoot of Hiranyakashyapa.

Staggering budget for Gunasekhar’s ambitious project

0

Creative director Gunasekhar is planning a mythological film with mega budget. To star Rana Daggubhati in the lead role, the film is said to be based on the mythological character Hiranyakasipa, a demon king who fought with lord Krishna.

According to the latest reports, Gunasekhar is currently busy with the recce work with his research team. It is learnt that the film will be made on a whopping budget of around 125 Crores which will go down as one of the costliest films in Tollywood.

The script demands grand sets, lavish costumes and heavy duty visual effects. So, Gunasekhar has decided to spend a fortune for this ambitious project. The film will be made as a multilingual and will release all over India.

If everything goes as planned, the project might be launched later this year.

Rudrama Devi director now crossing swords with Jeevitha

0

Director Gunasekhar who directed the movie Rudrama devi has been expressing his displeasure for not getting Nandi awards for his movie. Earlier, he wrote an open letter questioning CM’s decision of not granting tax exemption to his film. After Nandi awards were announced, he questioned why Rudrama Devi movie, which speaks about women empowerment was not considered for any of the first, second and third best films. For this question Jeevitha in the capacity of Jury member responded.

She responded – “We received Baahubali as well as Rudramadevi movies for the awards in the same year and both the films belong to same genre. So in the process of accommodating films of all genres, we could not give many awards (Telugu360: It is actually wrong on part of Jeevitha to say Baahubali and Rudramadevi belong to same genre. Obviously she could not differentiate the genres of historic films against the genre of folklore – Rudramadevi belongs to first and Baahubali belongs to second genre respectively).” She also responded on Gunasekhar’s question on – “Why Allu Arjun was given best character award instead of best supporting actor award”. She told, the award that was announced to Allu Arjun is called “SV Ranga Rao best character award” and he should be proud to receive that award, at least that’s what we, the jury members, had believed.

Now Gunasekhar responded to Jeevitha’s statements. He told, immediately after announcing awards, she praised Chandra Babu Naidu and his ruling. When asked by journos if she would join TDP she replied, yes, if you want. So Jeevitha lost her credibility by supporting to one political party. It is wrong to accommodate such people (film people expecting political benefits) into the jury. He also said regarding Allu Arjun’s award, jury can not change the category themselves. They have to examine the deservingness of the candidate only for the category for which he was nominated.

It seems this Nandi awards debate is going to continue for few more days!!!

Gunasekhar corrects his stand, praises CBN

Gunasekhar praises Chandrababu Naidu

The prestigious Nandi Awards announced by AP Government for the years 2014-16 seems to have turned to be a series of controversies. While some of them expressed their disrespect with their closed ones, some of them lashed out in public. Veteran director Gunasekhar took twitter to express his displeasure about his last movie Rudhramadevi getting ignored by the jury. The ace director started his question with Rudhramadevi not given tax exemption.

He reminded that Nandamuri Balakrishna’s periodic epic Gautamiputra Satakarni has been given tax exemption and for questioning this, his film Rudhramadevi has been badly ignored by the jury, which announced the Nandi awards. “In which country are we living. A film that has been made on women empowerment was not even considered for the jury award (which is given after the first, second and third best films). My sincere apologies for directing a film like Rudhramadevi” Gunasekhar added in his statement.

However hours after his statement, Gunasekhar corrected his stand and lauded AP Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu calling him a people’s leader. “Chandra Babu is one of the prominent leaders of the country and I was impressed with his Vision 20-20 long ago. The whole country knows about the development he initiated. I am one among his biggest admirers. He has no time to take any revenge on me. I feel there is some communication gap and I even admire Balakrishna as an actor though I am not close to him”.

“I received Nandi award for my debut film Lathi and I have received 8 Nandi awards till date in my career. Sometimes we feel bad for not getting award for our best work and this is may be because of the awards for three years announced at the same time” expressed Gunasekhar. On the whole, the ace director managed to correct his stand calling himself one of the biggest fans of Nara Chandra Babu Naidu.

Gunasekhar’s Question for CBN on Rudhramadevi

Gunasekhar’s Question for Chandrababu on Rudhramadevi

Critically acclaimed filmmaker Gunasekhar after a series of debacles produced a periodic drama titled Rudhramadevi. Though the film received tax exemption in Telangana, AP Government did not approve the proposal of tax exemption. Now the AP Government announced Nandi awards for the years 2014, 15 and 16 respectively. He even reminded that Balakrishna’s Gautamiputra Satakarni has been given tax exemption last year and his film Rudhramadevi did not receive a single award as he questioned AP Government regarding the tax exemption.

Rudhramadevi elevated the culture and the life story of warrior queen Rudhramadevi but it failed to impress the jury asked Gunasekhar. “I directed a film reminding about the history of a warrior queen which could not get minimum appreciation from the AP government. Sorry for making a film like Rudhramadevi” revealed Gunsekhar who questioned the jury along with Chandrababu Naidu about the film missing in the list of the awards for the year 2015.

Rudrama Devi gets a new release date

Gunasekhar’s much delayed 3D magnum opus Rudrama Devi gets a new release date, yet again. Rudrama Devi is now scheduled to release on September 17th 2015 as per the production sources. Whether the movie will eventually make it to the silver screen on the said date or not is very much dependent on the financial mess in which the production house is in.
