Is “Kapu Forum” a precursor to Kapu political party?

1

Finally, several Kapu leaders and former bureaucrats from Kapu community came together on Sunday in Vizag to discuss on the issues and problems being faced by Kapu community and how the present YSRCP government is neglecting, discriminating and humiliating Kapu community.

They also discussed how Kapus should unite and emerge as a ‘major political force’ in Andhra Pradesh.

TDP leader Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Bonda Uma, former DGP Nanduri Sambasiva Rao, former chief secretary of Tamil Nadu Rammohan, former IAS officer Bhanu, several retired IAS, IPS, IFS officers and other officials. social activists from Kapu community attended the meeting.

The meeting expressed anger over Kapu leaders in YSRCP keeping calm even after Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy failed to fulfill the promises made to Kapus on implementation of reservations and neglecting the welfare of Kapu community.

It was decided to set up a “Forum for Better AP” to work for the welfare and development of Kapus socially, financially and poliically.

This led to speculations over Kapus trying to form a political party of their own in the long run and this Forum was only a precursor.

It remains to be seen how Kapu leaders in ruling YSRCP react to this development.

Kapus embarrass Jagan during Padayatra

4

Jagan is doing foot march (padayatra) in the state and he already crossed the mark of 2000 km. He recently entered Godavari districts and as usual people gathered to his padayatra in thousands. However, unlike previous districts where he didn’t face any embarrassment, in Godavari districts, he seemed to have faced somewhat embarrassing situations.

Kapu reservation is on cards since several years but because of 2014 TDP election promise, it is further intensified. Currently the issue is pending with center. TDP, Congress have already supported this issue while YSRCP or Jagan has never clearly spelled his stand. Kapus in Godavari district showed him placards asking him to spell out his stand. Reportedly, Jagan is seeing those placards and smiled at them but didn’t talk about it and moved on.

Probably Jagan is skeptical of losing votes of other communities if supports Kapu reservation issue, was the opinion of locals who saw this incident. Kapu youth are also questioning Mudragada through social media – why he is not asking Jagan to spell out his stand on this issue.

We will have to wait and see how Jagan handles this issue.

KCR: Will Pawan Kalyan get votes by merely waving his hand?

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday commented on political developments in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking about Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party, KCR said that the actor-cum-politician will not be able to emerge as a political force to reckon in the near future.

KCR said that Kapu community will play a significant role in the 2019 elections. However he said that Kalyan who hails from the same community will not be able to fetch votes. He asked, “Will Pawan Kalyan get votes by merely waving his hand at the crowds?”

The TRS supremo held that a political party should have a mass appeal to be effective. He said that a persona like Megastar Chiranjeevi could not run a party and preferred to reduce his burden by dissolving the Praja Rajyam party. He hinted that JanaSena would follow the footsteps of PRP.

Indirectly referring to Kalyan’s unmoved attitude, KCR said that any person must be ready to fight, strive towards achieving the goal. He said that he ran TRS for 14years and had participated in several movements

KCR said that Telangana politics is free from the influence of caste while Andhra Pradesh is still under the clutches of caste-based- politics. He said that AP cannot free itself from the grasps of caste anytime soon.

Mudragada says he is not terrorist, Jagan questions CM

0

Kapu leader Mudragada Padmanabam was furious over his house arrest and questioned, “Is this democracy or police monarchy?”. He appealed to the police to arrest him if there are any cases against him. Mudragada said that he is not a terrorist and should not be kept under house arrest. He accused the police of curtailing his rights and depriving liberty for his caste.

Opposition Leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy took to twitter to respond on Mudragada’s confinement. He questioned the Chief Minister,”Why is Mudragada under house arrest? Aren’t Kapu’s requesting you to fulfil the promises you made in your election manifesto? Just because they are questioning you, how can you arrest, house arrest or bind over them? Why are police personnel deployed in thousands?”

Mudragada bawled that it is in bad taste of the government to obstruct the Padayatra seeking to fulfill the promises made during the election. He asked all the people of Kapu caste to visit Kirlampudi every day from 9.00am-10.00am till the government gives permission for the walkathon.

Home Minister Nimakayala Chinna Rajappa said that it is not right for Mudragada to behave offensively. He recalled that Chandrababu Naidu took permission when he launched Padyatra. He said that Mudragada will not be given permission for the walkathon at any cost.

Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that Mudragada is restoring to these tactics to mark his political existence. He questioned as to where was the Kapu leader during YSR regime when Kapu’s were run-down. Ganta said that the government will release a white paper on the funds allocated to Kapu Corporation.

However, the supporters of the former minister protested against his house arrest. There was tussle for brief moments between women and police who protested at P Gannavaram against the detention of Mudragada.

Mudragada placed under house arrest for 24hours

0

Kapu community patriarch Mudragada Padmanabham is placed under house arrest in view of his ‘Chalo Amaravati Padayatra’ on Wednesday. Police prevented him from going on walkathon, so he had to return to his home. The police issued notices to the Kapu leader that he is placed in house arrest for 24 hours under Section 151 of CrPC. Prohibitory orders of Section 30 of the Police Act and Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in the district. Drone cameras are reportedly being used to keep an eye on the Padayatra.

Mudragada said that the police were trying to curtail his rights and said that he would undertake the march under any circumstances. Police also detained several prominent Kapu leaders across the district.

High tension continues to prevail around the native village of Mudragada – Kirlampudi with nearly 2000 police personnel being deployed. As many as 5000 police personnel are deployed in the East Godavari District alone.

Director General of Police N Sambasiva Rao said that nobody sought permission for the Padayatra, especially with the proposed route plan covering several districts in the state.

It may be noted that, Mudragada announced padayatra from Kirlampudi to Amaravati covering 126kms including several villages and towns in 25 days. It is known that the former minister has been demanding reservation for Kapus.

The Problem of Being Pawan Kalyan

0

Life in reel world is easy. One need not break one’s head to figure out who is a hero or a villain. Heroes are extremely benevolent while Villains vile- always conspire, kill, rob, and booze as if they have nothing to do in life. They live like two different subspecies of Homo Sapiens-Homo Heroicus and Homo Villainus. Like the Neanderthals, villainus is overpowered and eliminated by Heroicus. The problem with real life is tad confusing. Here, heroes and villains are indistinguishable. They look alike in every aspect of life- in dressing, talking, loving, hating, abusing, cheating people, amassing wealth etc. You will never know who is a villain. One’s villain is another’s hero and vice versa. Today’s hero is tomorrow’s villain. This region’s villain is hero in the other region. Sometimes villains are resurrected as heroes and heroes are condemned to dustbin. Ordinary people are subjected to extreme anxiety in figuring out a hero or a villain. They fail and vote to somebody thinking he is a hero only to repent later.

Some time back, Chiranjeevi stepped into this real world as Homo Heroicus of tinsel world. He thought he would kill with a single stroke the Homo Villainus and become “Captain Andhra Pradesh”. He could not succeeded and quickly realized  that he was only a movie Heroicus. So, peeled off his costume and returned to his elements only to find that fighting in real life is not remunerative. So he joined Congress and which rewarded him with a glittering gift of post of union minister which can’t be bought with any amount of money.

Chirajneevi’s brother Pawan Kalyan, another member of Homo Heroicus, unmindful of the fate of his brother, stepped into real life battle, straight from the sets, amid too much background war cries and mobilized fan-army. He was a bit wiser in not entering fray in 2014. Why?  He can’t dream of becoming “Captain Andhra Pradesh.” Because the state was about to be divided. He tapped key ‘ wait and watch’. So, that he could enter as Homo Heroicus if 2014 election throws split verdict. Unfortunately for him, Andhra and Telangana gave a clear verdict to TDP and TRS respectively. Now he is not wanted in successor states. If he were to carve out some space, he has to figure out who is a villain in two states and declare war against the Homo Villainus. Like his brother he gave up war before it is fought and settled for a compromise for peace of mind. This was what he did in the press conference he addressed last Sunday. The press conference was lacking in many things- clarity, direction and politics. It clearly shows Pawan is beating a retreat for his early position Homo Heroicus in movie land . Why?

French Social Psychologist Sergi Moscovici talks of Social Representations. Social representation is the meaning you develop to negotiate with the society. Each person possesses multiple representations. Depending upon the context, one representation becomes pronounced collapsing all others. It is difficult to strike a balance, this was exactly Pawan Kalyan did in the press conference and failed. Pawan Kalyan is a bundle of contradictory social representations. He is caught in the web of these representations. To become a political leader, he has to disentangle himself from this web and come out with one clear social representation. Given his predicament it is impossible. For example he has Kapu, Andhra, Telugu movie star and Hyderabadi social representations. If he attacks Naidu’s TDP government, it would be immediately construed as an attack on Kammas by Kapus- which is not advisable now. If he attacks KCR’s TRS government, he would dubbed as Andhra settler and physical attacks not ruled out.  If he questions phone tapping and supports section 8 being an Andhra his identity as a resident of Hyderabad would be in jeopardy. He can’t back Andhra farmers in capital zone nor can he bite TDP.  Similarly, he can’t criticize Telangana government and survive in Hyderabad. He beat a hasty retreat by advising both parties restraint. He did not touch cash-for-vote stating sub judice as it has two sides of Andhra and Telangana. Remaining as Pawan Kalyan, the movie star, is the best bet for the time being as he needs the support of both AP and TS fans. He chose a middle path and bought  peace with both sides. Probably this press conference might be end of the road for Pawan’s political dreams.
